I've had Embarq (Now Centurylink) for years now. I live in a rural area and they are still my only option for high speed. I've been fairly happy with them and they've worked with me on getting my bill down, customer service has been very good, and my connection has been reliable very rarely going out. That being said I've only seen some minor speed bumps over the years and I've been stuck on 6 Mbps for around two years with no speed upgrades on the horizon. This was fine years ago but in an HD video world this is getting sluggish and I can feel my internet slow down if I'm using the connection on severel devices especially if they are doing video. Honestly if I had another choice that offered a reliable connection but faster speeds I'd switch. Centurylink really needs to be moving to a fiber option, DSL is just too slow for many users these days.

Not that bad

You're lucky as hell that you get 6 Mb in a rural area. 1.5 max here.

Re: Not that bad

I just dumped CenturyLink. My area has been wired for a new company and they offer speeds up to 10 Mbps download/ 2 Mbps upload. They also offer a home phone service and TV. So I have a triple internet/home phone/TV package with them now. Due to my living situation and living with somebody that gets an employee discount I get TV/Home Phone/Internet for only $33 a month!!! This can't be beat and honestly the internet part at least seems to be better than CenturyLink.

None

I've had 10 Mbps for about five years now and still no upgrades in speed in sight. Going over 5 years without CenturyLink bumping up the speed is ridiculous.

Re: help!

hey vince,

do you have the 512/128 or the 1500/384 line ?

have you optimized your system and tested for ping stability, throughput, ect ?

this site has an excellent section on tweaking your system for optimal results, with a registry tweak doctor program and instructions on getting your max Rwin and maxMTU settings the highest it can be (1492).

Plus it also helps ALOT not to lowball your ethernet adapter (nic card). The cheap ones are more taxing on system resources. I recommend a high quality 3-Com card that does alot of the work instead of running it thru your processor. They are a bit more expensive but you should notice the difference ... at least i did.

12/01/12 had to cancel service. Moved to an area of town that was only getting 1.5 meg down. I'm sorry to say I am going with the competition since I can get up 50 meg down. I would've stayed but going from 10 to 1.5 is not an option. I can and have recommended to Centurylink to people.

08/08/05 Called Sprint to ask about 5 meg and to see why when I upgraded to 3. my static ip didn't drop in price from 9.95 to 4.95. The Lady on the phone punched some things up and I could get 5 Meg no problem it took her some time to find out what I was talking about on the static ip price. Ultimatly took 2 other phone calls over 2 months to get it right. I really like 5 meg service. It's been rock solid since the upgrade and I tested the pings to servers and found they have now turned fast path on or lowered the latency. Got to love them low pings for online games. When Spring finally brings FTTH/P/C what ever they want to call it I will be signing up for that. Only thing I would like to see is faster upload. Other than that love it.

06/17/05 Well called Sprint to see if 1.5 or 3 meg service was now avalible. Was told 3 meg now is. Tole them to set me up. Was told that on the 16th I would have it. Had to call today the 17th and talk to tech support and 3 meg was proceced, but not All the way. took 10-20 minutes for engineering to fix the problem and I was up and running.

I recommend Sprint over Cox just for the reliablilty. very solid haven't been down in over a year.

5/10/2004 Well I had problems with my Static IP again. This time going even log in to PPPoE. I called Sprint and the guy had no problem with me having a router they didn't sell me. We troubleshooted it an finally saw on his other computer screen that had me on PPPoE. Called engineering and they fixed rightaway I will recomend this Product to some of my friends but will tell them of the Static IP problem.

4/21/2004 I have gone threw my first outage. I didn't like it but once it was up Enngineering put me on PPOE instead of my Static IP. I called tech support very friendly help me with that and even gave me credit for my week of no service. I love Sprint DSL I will stay with them.

3/23/2004 I like it seems fast to me. I got a static ip and 512 for 50 a month. The installer was very friendly and knew some of his stuff. When it came to the computer he had no clue.

Good things come to those that have to wait. . .

After 10+ years of some of the worst ISP's and connections to the internet (from dial-up, ISDN, satellite, WISP), DSL has finally arrived at our rural suburban home. TG.

After a few months of waiting for CenturyLink to finalize the installation of our new DSLAM, it was officially activated on 12/15/09 and I ordered service that same day. Activation was scheduled for 12/21/09 (Merry Christmas!)

On the Friday before activation the new 660R modem arrived via UPS in pristine condition -- my 17 year old is now about to bounce off the ceiling and can't wait for me to install it on the evening of the 21st

Setup was simple (especially since I completely rewired my LAN and phone connections in preparation for the activation with CAT5e cables.) After plugging in the modem and connecting it to my laptop, a few web pages later, our connection was live and speeds were excellent, compared to our 1MB connection with our flaky WISP, yet not quite as fast as I expected. . .

I next connected the router to the modem (Netgear) and asked my wife to test out her work connection (she does medical transcription remotely). It worked fine, however, she said she was getting a buzz/hum in the background of her phone connection -- hmmm... let me think, I connected 4 DSL filters to all of the phones in the residence, but now I'm thinking did I miss one? Sure enough, there was a phone on her desk that was plugged in as an after thought and it had no filter! I unplugged the phone and had her test dial her transcriber again: buzz/hum GONE! I tested the internet connection again and a documented 30% faster connection was now possible from the first speed tests. (NOTE: DSL filters are VERY IMPORTANT on all phones & satellite boxes!)

It is now day four and our 10MB connection is ROCK SOLID FAST; not one hiccup, burp, fart, etc. The wife is extremely happy, the teenager is thrilled, and I am finally at peace, just in time for Christmas.

By having to wait so long for Embarq/CenturyLink to install the DSLAM that services our residence, we got the latest and greatest equipment, so there was a bright side to having waited so long. The entire installation of the DSLAM could have been much faster if it were not for our local power COOP's ridicules demand of $10,000 to run power from a pole approximately 50 feet across a tar & gravel road to the DSLAM! Shameful that West Central Electric would stymie an upgrade that would benefit their customers access to the internet -- I guess they would rather peddle their Wildblue crap to more people. Anyway, CenturyLink simply "end arounded" them and contracted a local company to run the power cable under the road for a fraction of what WCE wanted -- way to go CL project manager.

We love our new connection -- thank you CenturyLink and Embarq_Joey for putting up with all of my IM queries on the status of the DSLAM installation, it was well worth the wait.

5/26/2010: Still a rockin solid connection. Only a couple hiccups (middle of the night) brief resets. The only bad thing I can say, is that now with a solid connection to the internet, a lot of those sites I used to think were slow because of our crappy WISP service are just SLOW sites i.e. Rotten Tomatoes is one that comes to mind.

10/21/2012 Update on service:

What can I say, but "FANTASTIC SERVICE" from CenturyLink and our local service techs.

In May of 2012 we experienced a lightning strike on our home. It fried just about every piece of electronics equipment in our home and blew the cover off our phone box about 30' into our front yard. After calling the power company (fixed power that evening) and then CenturyLink, CL showed up the next business day and the tech fixed the customer box on the outside, rewired our connection so that I no longer needed the DSL filters, and installed a new Westell modem/wireless/router. I asked the tech what the charges were and he said "anything on my truck" is free for a lightning strike. Wow! I did not expect that. The new router works very well and I no longer needed to purchase another wireless router. Phone and internet was restored and working better than before the lightning strike. SUPER SERVICE AWARD.

Fast forward to September... my wife, who works from home, started to notice a lot of static and hum on the phone line, especially in the mornings. I called in a ticket and the next afternoon the tech arrived. Of course, by then, the hum was gone and my poor wife had to drive 40 miles one way to work in the main office (the hum was that bad.)

The tech said, tell her not to drive into work the next day and he would be here at 7:30am to personally checkout the line noise. The next morning, he called and said he was on his way (I think this may have been on his own time, but I'm not positive.) He arrived and tracked the trouble to our buried cable to the house. He switched pairs (bad pair) and the noise was gone.

Not content to leave it at that, he submitted an order to bury a new cable to replace the bad one. Within three weeks, a company arrived, buried the new cable and connected it to the house. It was a good thing the tech ordered the new cable, because the switched pair started to exhibit the same hum within a couple weeks after the change... Once again SUPER SERVICE AWARD!

Fast forward again to last week. Our internet stopped working on Thursday for about 30 minutes... odd. It came back up and everything was working as normal. Later that evening I noticed that we had no dial tone. I called CL and opened a ticket to fix it. At 7:30am the next morning, I got a call from the same (GREAT) tech that fixed the original line noise and he said, Tell Sharyl not to drive downtown, that he would be right out to fix it! What! Not only did he remember my wifes name, but he also remembered that she worked from home and would have to make the 80 mile round trip drive if the phone line was dead -- SUPER, SUPER, SERVICE AWARD! The line was fixed before 8am.

I'm hoping that we will be getting PrismTV in our area soon, because they have been laying new fiber in our area for the last month. I had some reservations about PrismTV because of potential internet problems, verses our current DirecTV (which we lose everytime it rains or snows heavily.) Now, I'm looking forward to the day when I can dump the dish off the side of the house and go with a company that obviously cares about it's customers.

I know others have had different experiences with CL, but for my area, it has been nothing but GRAND -- Thank you CL techs for the best service I've received from a company in a long time.

September 2012 [final] l-o-n-g update: After being a Sprint/Embarq/CenturyLink DSL customer since service was introduced in 2001 and phone for decades before that, it is time to move on to something a little more current in terms of speed. The 5M/768k service here has been rock-solid albeit expensive but just simply isn't meeting our needs any longer. After checking when/if new capabilities will be made available, the discovery was that for where I live we should be content with these aging speeds. No bonded ADSL2+ or VDSL in our foreseeable future. 5M/768k isnt awful mind you but neither were 28.8k modems back in its day.

CL's implementation of 250GB caps wasn't exactly a thrilling service enhancement either nor the $60/mo+taxes&fees for standalone DSL once initial promo pricing ends.

My current CL 12-month commitment ends next week and I'll be cancelling in favor of Comcast's Blast 50M/10M service recently installed. Somehow I feel 'dirty' in making the switch having never been a big Comcast fanboi. But, the 50M downloads are exceptional and even more importantly the 10Meg upload is just, well, nothing short of amazing. Decent latency too, only a few ms higher than my minimally interleaved DSL. Blast service promo price of $30/mo for 1st 6 months, then $45 for 7-12, and $68 beyond which is still quite a deal considering I'd be paying in excess of $60+taxes&fees for dry DSL starting next month. Competition really can benefit those of us who have choices!

I'd have stuck around if there was actually something worth sticking around for speed & service-wise. I'll miss the excellent support that the TalkToUs team has provided over the years, especially Joey. He's the best and personally took care of several challenging problems that couldn't get resolved via normal phone support channels. The old-time cable plant techs still around dating back to UnitedTel days are top-notch and have an excellent service ethic -- they'll be missed, at least the few that haven't yet retired.

Farewell CL & thanks for the reliable service over the years. I sincerely hope that CL at some point sees the value and opportunity in upgrading to fiber and/or updating this ancient copper plant in the Hunterdon County NJ locale. The lead-sheathed, pulp-insulated cable still in service down the road doesn't owe anyone much after being in service likely ~70+ years. Folks around here have fled in droves over the years, I'm one of the few around who still used DSL...until now.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

June 2011 update: Its been almost 2 years since this review was last updated. No changes to report, just a generally stable 5M/768k service. Sadly, its become a bit long-in-the-tooth and these speeds are not quite as impressive as they were ~5 years ago. Pricing of $40/mo for DSL *plus* phone (which I rarely if ever use) takes the total bill up to almost $70. I'm being aggressively poached by Comcast to switch to their triple play for $90/mo for 1st yr, the $110/mo second year, including unlimited phone, HD-DVR, AND Blast 25M/4M internet. Oh! And a $200 credit to boot from Comcast... Its nice to have choice...but would prefer to stay with CLink however its a v-e-r-y tempting proposition. Tis a shame CLink's cable plant here is so dilapidated and distance prevents anything better than what I've currently got. *SIGH* I'll decide by week's end if I'm defecting to cable... A 25M/4M service is awfully tempting. *salivates despite the 250G cap* Its also very enticing to stare at a remarkable ~$50/mo savings by dropping both Clink AND DirecTV by moving it all over.

August 2009 update: Nothing new to report -- still performing excellently and only had one short outage a month or two ago which was related to their upstream carrier Level 3.

February 2009 update: Still running smooth and am very happy. Had first outage in years last month which lasted only around 5 hours. Thought it was quickly addressed and resolved. No complaints here - speeds and stability are excellent. Just wish I could get the 10Meg package (still not available to me since due to distance and equipment from the CO).

June 2008 update: Still rock-solid and performing perfectly. Took advantage of the $5 cost reduction a few months ago with no issues whatsoever. Between the Embarq-staffed/sanctioned support in the DSLR forums and the overall service package this is by far the best ISP I've ever had to deal with. Kudos to Embarq for delivering and maintaining a top-notch service. I do however miss dial backup and Netnews which were eliminated as part of the Earthlink migration. Also it appears I'm just a little too far to get the 10Mbps service, but the 5/768 is a champ nonetheless.

January 2008 update: I wish all telecom services were this trouble-free and cannot remember the last time there was a significant service-impacting hiccup. Speeds are dead-on (5Meg down), first hop-latency ~7ms w/ Fastpath, and tech support is among the best I've seen anywhere. These guys know how to run network, keep their customers satisfied, and deliver a service! I do miss some of the freebie features such as netnews and dial backup that the Earthlink service offered before the emabarqmail migration, but that's small stuff in the bigger picture. I just hope they stay ahead of the capacity curve with the introduction of 10M service (not yet available in my CO apparently).

June 2007 update: Upgraded to the 768k upstream service from 640k. Am reliably getting ~700k upstream with the full 5M down. My line is pretty much maxed out now, with very little margin left for further upgrades. Guess that can be expected for a 9K ft loop running on ~45 year old copper. Working well and very pleased.

January 2007 update: 6 months and counting of broadband bliss. The 5000/640 service here has been ROCK-SOLID, never yet an interruption or slowdown even during peak hours. Bravo Embarq! My only wish/dream is that an even higher tier of service approaching 10M/2M was available. Maybe someday?

July 2006 update: I'm back w/ Embarq (nee-Sprint) DSL after an almost 6-month stint with PatMedia's cable modem service. Embarq is now price & speed competitive. I couldnt be happier with Embarq's 5000/640 service and have no regrets of returning to the DSL service I reliably enjoyed since 2001 when it became first available in Clinton, NJ.

The Zxytel 660 modem was shipped overnight and service activated the following day with ease. Seems like they have the provisioning process well-oiled. Customer service and support has been responsive, friendly, and eager to please. Some line clean-up (bridge tap removal) was needed to make the 5.0 service stable, once done its been blazing fast at 7-8ms latency to first hop w/ fastpath. Tech support at both the 800 number and the field tech were simply OUTSTANDING. Way to go Embarq! I really like what I see so far.

January 2006 update: Dropped Sprint's DSL service in favor of Patriot Media's cable broadband. Sprint was no longer speed or price competitive. :-( See review and story at: »Review of Patriot Media by dmk08809

Late-December 2001 update: 3+ months and still going strong! Extremely reliable, quite good speed. I'm still very pleased and am happy with this purchase, even despite Earthlink's affiliation with it.

Original post circa September 2001:

Summary: A pleasant experience overall -- I was up and running within 5 business days after placing the order. It would appear that Sprint Local generally has their collective act together in providing DSL service.

Background: I'm one of the Rhythms' refugees who was expecting to be shut off on September 10, 2001. Remembering the hassle it took to get my first DSL line from FlashCom (remember them??) & Rhythms, I was expecting another 6-month long nightmare to get it installed and operational.

Story: Ordered service on 8/25 via Sprint Local's web site. Received a phone call from a Sprint rep the following Monday 8/27 afternoon to arrange service details. Costs were $50/mo w/ 1yr committment, $50 setup fee, and $200 for the DSL modem (-$150 call-in rebate) for a 128 / 512K PPPoE connection. Since I have several phone extensions, it was determined that a splitter would be preferable to using the self-install microfilters. Service was promised to live and ready on Tuesday, 9/4 and a technician would be out at 6PM that day to install a splitter.

DSL modem (Efficient SpeedStream 5260) arrived on Wednesday, 8/29 via UPS second day air. Paperwork w/ usernames and instructions arrived Thursday, 8/30. Plugged modem in on Tuesday 9/4 around 3PM and had service! Splitter had not yet been installed, so all phone lines in house had a high-pitched hiss on the line while connected. Technician failed to show up on 9/4 by 6PM, so I called Sprint at 7PM. Was told a tech was dispatched and he should be there that night. No show by 9:30, calls to Sprint were greeted with an "offices are now closed" message. Oh well.. Disconnected DSL modem for evening, but was at least relieved to know that it worked.

Sprint Local tech shows up next day 9/5 in the late morning to install splitter. The splitter was installed, integrated into the outside network demarc box and clearly labeled. Apparently, they do not actually need to come inside the house to do any work so such scheduling logistics (and needing to be home) were not necessary. Came home that night, rehomed my existing internal Rhythm's DSL wiring to the new service. Plugged in cables, powered on and Viola! It worked!

So far its been very stable, delivering speeds exactly as advertised. I can only hope that it stays that way and remains as reliable as the Rhythms DSL connection was for the past year. As a result of the rapid installation, I was never without continuous broadband service despite Rhythm's unfortunate demise.

I'm quite pleased overall and can't complain. The service appears to homed directly into SprintLink's POP in Pennsauken NJ, right on their national backbone network. Earthlink as the backend ISP wouldnt have been my first choice for email, netnews, etc, but its at least tolerable. If Sprint Local actually showed up on-time as scheduled, they would have earned an A! Instead, I'll give them an A-.

My Rhythms-based DSL with 408k up / 896k down speeds will still be missed at $39.99/mo, but this sure beats the alternative of going back to a dialup analog modem!

they do not use ELNK as the ISP. They only use ELNK software... the network is all Sprint.

Re: EarthLink

In all due respect, "Iknowall000215", you're wrong. Earthlink provides email, web space, netnews, and dial backup service for Embarq's customers. That's the very definition of ISP services.

As for the IP network itself, Embarq exclusively uses Sprintlink for its upstream drainage/feed.

Word in these forums is that Earthlink is history sometime in the next few months and that Embarq will be using a new vendor for the same services. We'll see.. Personally I'd rather have the choice of "rolling my own" and take a few dollars off my Embarq bill per month.

Re: Hmmm

Fox, Yes I did and he was quite helpful in making the final determination that its not a possibility right now. Reasons I understand were due to being just slightly over the distance limit and also the equipment wasn't in place to support it. I'm okay with the 5Meg service, but of course, you can never have enough bandwidth!

If anything, customer service has just created more problems for me. Both download and upload speeds are inconsistent and much lower than what I should be getting. All in all, CenturyLink is absolutely horrible and I'm sorry if you have ever had the displeasure of dealing with them.

I live in a rural part of NW Indiana, roughly 9 - 10 miles from the nearest town (5k pop). Embarq recently deployed DSL out into these rural areas, so I had to jump on it. I ordered the 5/768 tier on 2/11/09 via the Embarq website. This was the bundle deal with basic voice for $70. The Zyxel 660 modem arrived Saturday, 2/14/09, while the service was set to be activated on Monday, 2/16.

Got a call around 3 PM on Monday (2/16) to confirm that DSL was ready on my line. So I setup the modem, and it was working. Did a few speed tests and got consistent results of 5/768. »www.speedtest.net/result ··· 1696.png

The only thing I could say that I am disappointed in is the first hop latency, which is right at 41 ms (same as our Embarq business line at work). A relative of mine who lives a couple miles farther out of town than me sees around 18 ms to the first hop. I do understand the difference between interleave and fastpath...and that not everyone that is on interleave sees the same first hop latency. I talked to a tech that said the equipment I am on does not support fastpath (ADSL2+?).

I will post an update to this review in a week, and follow-up with more updates in the future.

==/ Update - 2/24/09 \==

Someone from Embarq was kind enough to switch my line to fastpath, so my latency has dropped by roughly 20 - 25 ms. Service is still solid, 5000/768 24/7.

»www.speedtest.net/result ··· 9310.png

==/ Update - 3/1/09 \==

Everything is still going good. However, latency went back up by about 15 ms. There seems to be a 20 ms jump to a level3 hop that was previously much lower. Can't fault Embarq for it though.

UPDATE - 5/5/2010
So for the past several months, I've struggled to hit 5 meg down, except during very off-peak hours (despite having an excellent signal). Contacted support, and they apparently fixed a trunk issue and it seemed to help. A week after that it was crap again. I'm starting to lose confidence in CTL.

UPDATE - 5/17/2010
The past couple weeks my downstream has been pretty much anywhere from 500 kbps to 2.5 meg, no higher than 2.5 meg. With the help of CTL_Joey, we got someone to come out and look things over and they've found issues with some T1's. On top of that, they no longer want to support 5 meg for me because they only have 4 T1's...so they're dropping me down to 3 meg. Makes a person wonder why they sold me 5 meg in the first place.

UPDATE - 5/18/2010
And it continues....the word today is that 26 or 27 users on 4 T1's doesn't work very well, and they're just now figuring that out. I want to know WHY they would sell me 5 Mb knowing this(and if sales didn't know this then that's an even bigger issue). The guy that called me (very nice guy) said I for sure will be dropped to either 3 Mb or 1.5 Mb. What a great week.

UPDATE - 5/21/2010
They are dropping me down to 1.5 Mb. Way to go guys. Oversell your bandwidth then make the customers deal with it.

UPDATE - 5/24/2010
I am now officially on the 1.5 Mb plan. Words of advice to CenturyLink: Don't sell me something you can't or don't even intend to support! My connection is now just barely faster than my previous Sprint EVDO connection.

UPDATE - 5/25/2010
Now all they need to do is get my latency back to where it was and i'll be fine....but it seems they're having trouble getting my first hop latency below 33, when it was 16 - 17 before. The latency is far more important to me than the bandwidth. We'll see how it goes, I've done pretty good so far in not letting myself get pissed off, but it's getting harder.

UPDATE - 9/20/2010
Pings have been junk during peak hours the last 3 or 4 days, and can barely hit 1.0 Mb of my 1.5 cap. I knew this would happen. They just dropped us all to 1.5 and forgot about it, now they've probably added even more subscribers and bandwidth is running thin again. If it doesn't clear up, they're either going to increase capacity at the DSLAM or they can go screw themselves! Sprint EVDO is better than this right now.

UPDATE - 9/30/2010
CTL's not even going to bother. I would be out of a job if I treated my clients at work the way these people treat their customers.

UPDATE - 8/16/2011
I didn't even realize it's been almost a year since the last update. Basically, I'm still on 1.5/512, and it's STILL garbage in the evenings. Yes, ONE YEAR from my last update, and they still do not have enough bandwidth at the DSLAM, even though there is supposedly a project in the works to get more bandwidth.

UPDATE - 3/8/2012
So, they did eventually get more bandwidth to the DSLAM and my connection went back to normal......for a while. However, it's been absolute GARBAGE for several weeks, routinely sub 500 kbps, 300 ms pings. It's sad that there are no laws in place to prevent this kind of thing. It would be nice if we could demand the services we pay for as easy as they can demand payment every month. They're nothing but frauds. They wait until they can't stand their customers bitching anymore before they increase their network capacity. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY.

UPDATE - 3/22/12
They finally fixed it. Bandwidth and latency is solid again. However, they can't seem to figure out how to get my first hop latency back down to where it was. Used to be 18-20, now 36ish, and it's supposedly "fastpath". I don't think they know wtf they're doing, honestly. Sad company.

UPDATE - 5/17/12
Like clockwork, the same exact issues are back. Bandwidth is routinely under 1 meg, pings are all over the place, with around 5% packet loss.

Hmmmm

if the equipment supports ADSL2+, then I'm fairly sure that it could support FastPath.

Could you order 10 meg, if you wanted to? If you can, then chances are the equipment can, in fact, support fastpath, as 10 meg requires fastpath.

in any event, if you had fastpath, that first-hop latency would definitely drop.

Re: Hmmmm

nah, 10 meg isn't available. Someone from the Embarq forum (not joey) managed to lower my first hop latency to 16. Fastpath or not, it's good enough for me.

same issues

I have had the same issue with sprint/embarq/century-link i purchased 3meg service back in '05 and have had nothing but issues, first the connection would drop every other hour, every day, so i had (they didn't want to) them change the nid out side and i ran cat5e wire through out my house (2 lines 1 to a uniden phone system and the other to embarq modem) but it hasn't totally fixed my issue, the net drops about 2x a day and i have been through a dozen modems (have the fried boxes to prove it!!!) i was talking to different techs on the phone and one of them (i forget her name) said that i shouldn't have even been able to buy 1.5meg service let alone 3meg.... the issue is i live on a farm... the house alone is over 150 years old and probably the original telco lines running underground to the house about a 500ft span to the pole ... the problem is this line needs replaced (as many on-site techs have even said) but sprint/embarq/century-link refuses to change it . i don't know if i should file a complaint with the better business people or what ??? i was told by a phone rep that the only way they are going to pay to change a line that needs changed is if it totally breaks with out any outside interference ...... i am going to call again tomorrow 6/2/10 and see if i can yet again get no where

Late Fee Charges

Better check your statements, this is the second time in 3 months that I have been charged a late fee when in fact they received my payment 3 weeks before it was due. Sounds funny to me.

I have not had many problems with this company. Just recently have I started having slower speeds and high latency. I cannot stand a company that tells you it is on your end. (Router, Line , ETC). I had to call back 3-4 times in one night just to get someone to actually listen to my problem and run me through all the tests. Thanks to that person I actually have people checking into it. Sad thing is that I have had this problem every night for about 2 weeks straight with no relief.

This company is not an all around bad company. Just they seem to want to take the money we pay monthly and not do anything with it to help the people with crappy connections.

EDIT:: Forgot to mention I ordered the 10meg service. I get downloads at a speed of about 2.5meg starting about 5-6pm.

A few years ago when our issues began to become a problem, I actually felt that being a long time customer (14 years) this was a temporary rough patch and Earthlink/Century/Embarq would work it out as they always had.

What an Idiot I am. I was met with reduced DSL speed from 5mb to 2.9 (not to mention being billed at the rate for 10mb). Unresponsive Tech service, and non existant customer service.

I finally realize that this is the new business model. Really. If I treat customers, especially long time loyal customers in this manner. Im screwed.

As soon as I can I am throwing these bastards overboard. Not a minute to soon. I look forward to not being overbilled for Dish, or charged for the equipment already sent back (at our expense). And maybe, maybe I can get the speeds that is the norm for the majority of the USA.

Potential Las Vegas customers, You Have Been Warned.
