I ordered the 1.5 MB DSL Service from EMBARQ which is $24.95+tax. The order was made along with the order for new phone service.
EMBARQ shipped the DSL modem out and it was waiting for me the day I moved into the new house. They installed the telephone line, but it got crossed with another line. However the DSL service worked correctly the entire time.
The DSL modem is the 660 Series and it works pretty well. EMBARQ is using this modem on their DHCP network now.
It can get sluggish at night, but other than that it has been excellent with no outages and a great price.
This is better than dialup and cheaper than dialup with a second line. EMBARQ gives you a $25 referral credit for anyone you tell about the service that signs up for it. You just have to fill out a form on EMBARQ.com.
MAY 26, 2007 UPDATE: With almost a year in, nothing but excellence. Service has improved with most of the sluggishness gone, the speeds are consistently as advertised, and not one outage. I placed the service on vacation for the summer and they will charge me about $15 a month to place it on hold without breaking the 1 year contract. I will likely retain the service month-to-month for my price of $24.95 once the contract is up. I may even consider upgrading it to 3.0MB. IF you go to FSU, you get a $3 FSU@Home DSL discount from EMBARQ by calling 1-800-877-1590, asking for the special, and providing them with your FSUCard ID number.
JULY 24, 2007 UPDATE: I have come down south to Cape Coral for the summer and EMBARQ let me place my DSL service on "vacation" for $15/month without affecting my contract. Down here in Cape Coral, my parents have EMBARQ's 3.0MB DSL Service and in the almost 5 years they have had it, it has been pretty good and reliable. Only 1 outage a year on average with it being fixed within 2 days usually. Rock solid the rest of the time. They pay $34.99 a month for the 3.0MB service.
AUGUST 23, 2007 UPDATE: My modem started acting oddly yesterday after 1 day on the job back from vacation. I called EMBARQ last night and they are sending a new modem out to me ASAP at no charge. I still have service, but the modem resets every so often.
AUGUST 24, 2007 UPDATE: Got the new modem via UPS today. Followed the directions and it works just fine.
AUGUST 24, 2007 UPDATE #2: After a while, the modem started restarting itself again. Not as often as the old modem, but it looks like the filters, splitters, and even the phone jack may have to be replaced too. I wonder if lightning hit the line or something.
AUGUST 25, 2007 UPDATE: Tech came out and discovered that the line had been provisioned for 8MB, but the modem was only authorized to draw 1.5MB. After about 10 minutes, he had it all fixed and the service was working just fine.
SEPTEMBER 2, 2007 UPDATE: EMBARQ had a large outage in Tallahassee yesterday and restored service around 10:15 PM EDT. Today, they lost service in the afternoon and it came back around 5 PM EDT. I called in for both disruptions and was given service credits for both disturbances. They told it me it was a networking problem in my area which was not letting my modem load the profile and provisioning.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2007 UPDATE: Had some outages this past Wednesday which were very frustrating. I also got a bill (supposedly including prorations from last month) that was $30 higher than normal. I am getting really frustrated with EMBARQ's inability to get things done correctly on time.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2007 UPDATE: Chatted online with an EMBARQ CSR at EMBARQ.com and she fixed my billing errors. I was credited back $25.64 bringing the bill back to the normal range. I was also given my normal credit for FSU@Home and service outage credits. I was charged $7 for a new filter to replace an older one. So now I am satisfied with both the billing and technical services correcting their errors and getting me back online both technically and financially. Also, I removed one of my bad points ("1 year Contract") because EMBARQ no longer requires it.
MARCH 2, 2008 UPDATE: Since the last update, very smooth sailing. I've been tempted to jump to Comcast as they are offering a "Double Play Bundle" for $50 which includes phone and internet, but the internet service is slower than my 1.5MB. EMBARQ really needs to get an IPTV service going! The only way I could go to Comcast is if I get rid of phone service entirely or I transfer my local 850 number to a prepaid cell phone plan to hold it since I do use it.
MARCH 18, 2008 UPDATE: I have been trying out Comcast's internet service for about 2 weeks after they offered it to me at $19.99 a month for 6 months. I have decided to keep EMBARQ DSL and tonight I ordered the upgrade to 3.0MB for $5 more a month. It should completed by Thursday Evening when I am told to reset my modem to get the new speeds. My new monthly total for EMBARQ 3.0MB DSL will be $26.95 a month due to my FSU@Home $3 discount and a discount for having Home Phone with EMBARQ. I will be able to continue using my 660 modem.
MARCH 20, 2008 UPDATE: Got home today and found 3.0 MB speeds as promised. Kudos to EMBARQ as I doubled my speed for only $5 more a month. No contract, no new equipment to buy/rent (ahem Comcast), no new expenses except the extra $5 a month.
JUNE 10, 2008 UPDATE: So far, so good on the 3.0 MB service. I may consider downsizing back to the 1.5 service though because I don't think I really need this big a pipe, but it certainly is not breaking the bank. Still no 10 MB service as an option for me, but I wouldn't need it anyways. Too bad EMBARQ doesn't have their own TV service like Fios (Verizon) or U-Verse (AT&T). They do offer Dish Network, but I do not have line of sight. Sezmi from EMBARQ would be very interesting. One note, I appreciate the EMBARQ keeps its call centers in areas that it serves. Much easier talking to someone in Central Florida than in Central India.
JULY 11, 2008 UPDATE: Internet was misbehaving a bit today and it finally gave out around 7:30 pm tonight, but it is now back. An outage of about an hour and a half, not bad. EMBARQ is to be commended for the quick response, but I wish they would bring back the complimentary backup dial-up.
OCTOBER 18, 2008 UPDATE: I've been working with EMBARQ for about the last month and a half to stop the intermittent outages that I see at night. The modem is losing sync. They have replaced the modem twice, I now have a 2Wire Router. I've had someone out almost weekly now and they continue to improve up-time and the quality of my voice line....but it does get annoying. I really hope this can get fixed soon or I may have to look at the evil Comcast. :-(
NOVEMBER 14, 2008 UPDATE: The reliability has improved, but not to the point it was before Tropical Storm Fay passed. The voice quality is inconsistent and the DSL sync continues to be an issue. With almost weekly truck rolls, it still has not been fixed. I credit EMBARQ with their courtesy and attempts to keep me happy, but enough is enough. I'm giving Comcast's Triple Play a chance this week.
NOVEMBER 22, 2008 UPDATE: After several years of good service from EMBARQ, we could not get these issues with the DSL going out intermittently and the voice quality deteriorating to be fixed. I took Comcast on their offer of a Triple Play, adding 6MB Cable Internet and Digital Voice to my Digital Starter Cable. EMBARQ was great to me and I would still recommend them, but I needed a change. Thanks to all the EMBARQ folks for their efforts over the years.
APRIL 19, 2009 UPDATE: I'm back! Comcast's service was "faster" in download tests, but the page loading lagged, my IP address kept showing me in the wrong state, and their tech support had no answers. I called EMBARQ and they happily gave me back my original phone number and signed me up for 3MB DSL. They also fixed the problem that was causing my signal to drop out originally and gave me a $50 credit for returning from Comcast. I may upgrade to the 5MB service in the Fall.

| Embarq I got a sales call last Tuesday from Embarq and decided to utilize their "high speed" internet connection. When asked if I had a 'large' connection at the back of my computer... he asked if had a particular port that was larger than the regular phone jack port
I said I saw something "larger than the usual phone jack plug-in" and we thought it was the "Ethernet" port. Well I received my 660 series 'box' to set up promptly the next day... after trying to plug in the 'Ethernet' cords, I found out I do NOT have this port to utilize and as of today, now Saturday, I am unable to get on line with this system. Tried to use the on line chat with no success and of course if you try to actually CALL them , you have a 10 to 20 min. wait on the phone. So at this point I've had to purchase the connection for my computer at an extra $29.00, which I should receive in a few days...

| The uptime is the name of the game. I was an adelphia drone for years and bailed out right before the comcast takeover. The fact that my connection survives thunderstorms (so long as electric stays up) is sooo much nicer than cable going down with storms miles away. People may wallow in their powerboost all they like; I'll take the reliability of my slightly higher ($45 for 3000) dsl service. I've had 2 hours downtime in going on a year with Embarq. Two hours downtime was a weekly event with adelphia, and routing problems that took weeks to figure out, and that TS knew nothing about for the entire time, happened at least once a year near the end of my doomed romance with the whore that was adelphia cable HSI. -- A monthly desktop thread should only happen when Paris Hilton buys a computer. | |

UPDATE 4/10/2009
Seems they have sorted out my speed issues. As of today I am getting the 1.5 services I paid for.
*******
I live in a rural part of South Carolina. I have been a Hugesnet customer for years. Recently made a switch to evdo with verizon. Verizon has good browsing and dl speeds, but I could never get a consistent signal. Dropped connection very often.
DSL through Embarq was just recently offered in my area. Two different levels were available, 768k and 1.5mb. I was thrilled and quickly ordered the 1.5 service on March 25. Service was installed today. While talking the the tech, he happened to mention that I would only be able to get 512k...WHAT!!?? I thought for sure he must be mistaken. Anyway, after everything was up and running, I did a few speed test, and sure enough, nothing over 500k. I contacted a csr and they told me not to worry that I would not be billed for the 1.5 plan if I was not getting it.
I don't mind paying, I just wanted the speed. I mean, that is almost 1/3 of the speed that I am getting with my evdo ( I get around 1.3)...If I could keep the evdo connected, I would be perfectly happy.
Needless to say, I am very disappointed and really wish there was something I could do.

I had Road Runner for years and was happy except for the occasional loss of connection in high winds. So I cut my RR services to lite (19.95/mnt), and tried Embarq DSL on a month-to-month basis. I opted for high speed (5Mb/764Kb) at $59.95.
I had DSL in California, so I tried my 2Wire Home Portal 1000HG. It would not work no matter what I tried.
Embarq sent two EQ-660R ADSL modems. One would not work. The other took about 20 minutes to finally connect.
dslreports.com speed tests showed 4.8Mb/684Kb. I was reasonably happy with those speeds. However, there was a noticeable delay when I tried to surf some websites (most notably yahoo.com and google.com). iTunes downloads seemed to slow down too (perhaps part of their TOS ?)
As I was paying my bill online (NOT late), I lost my landlines and DSL. I waited for about 30 minutes then called Embarq customer support, and reconnected my computer to my cable modem (thank goodness it still worked!) The CSR created a ticket and told me that they should respond in about 2 days (it was Saturday). Two days had elapsed and I called them back late Monday afternoon. They could not find any open tickets, and suggested that I take my screw driver and try to disconnect/reconnect the wires.
About 30 minutes after I hung up, the phones were back on. I don't know what the problem was, but clearly it wasn't something I fixed.
I honestly tried to find an alternative to RR, but Embarq isn't it. The CSRs are nice, but just not very helpful. I tried to get a complete refund, but they wouldn't go for it. Embarq doesn't want their modems, so I have two DSL modems up for grabs if you need a spare.

I've had Embarq for about a year now, and have minimum problems with my service. The previous statement doesn't apply one week out of every two months or so however. My connection seems to practically disintegrate to below dialup speeds for the pre-mentioned week. Other than that, its a good service that I would recommend to anyone interested, as I have not had any other problems with them, and I suppose that the problem isn't too serious, although frustrating I have to admit.

Like a lot of people in central florida I have Embarq. Also like a lot of people in central florida I don't have a choice, it's Embarq or nothing and believe me they know that and will abuse their monopoly position at every opportunity. Prices are high, service is nonexistant, and quality of the connection is laughable at best. It took several years to get someone to do something other than an FTP speed test and instantly the guy found bare copper shorting all over the place in my wall and had to replace as much line as he could get to because it was basically disintigrating.
For the same price as the local cable connections 7-15 megabit STARTING package I get their almost-highest 3mbit package and a ping that's never dropped below 200ms. Their connection quality is terrible and their copper is literally rotting away to the point of turning to dust in their own tech's hands and they don't care because, in their own words, who else am I going to get internet from?
The one good thing that I have to say about this abusive and arrogant company is that their tech support is composed of people who genuinely know what they're talking about but are generally forbidden to do more than read a script they've been handed and their techs are generally also left with their hands tied.
People who choose embarq may get treated well, but the rest of us may as well still have dialup.

This review is to reflect on why I have not switched from Comcast to Embarq.
When I moved to Eustis, Florida the best deal was a Broadband package offered by Comcast through Circuit City. See my review of Comcast Broadband under Comcast reviews.
I planned to try Embarq Broadband when the Comcast's six month introductory rate changed from $19.95 per month to $42.95 per month. I contacted Embarq in mid 2007 and was advised that the only available download speeds at my address were 768K for $19.95 per month or 1.5M, for $24.95 per month. I was also advised that in order to obtain service and a free modem, I would have to sign a one year contract or pay an additional $10.00 per month and pay for the modem up front. I passed on the offer and continued to use Comcast for Broadband service.
About Six Months later I helped a friend that was using Embarq Broadband, set up a wireless network in his home. When he checked availability he was offered tiers from 768K to 5Mb and choose the 3Mb tier at $29.95 per month. I ran a speed test before I installed the router and found that the download speed was actually 3Mb as advertised. During the installation I called Embarq technical support and asked about switching the ZyXEL Modem to the bridge mode. The technician was helpful and provided correct instructions on changing to the bridge mode. So far I have heard no complaints about his broadband service.
Several weeks later I was contacted by Embarq and was advised that additional download speeds were available at my address up to 5M. At that time they offered Three Months of free service and a free modem if I signed a one year contract. Since mid 2007 I have received several solicitations from Embarq offering anything from Three Months of free service to Six Months of free service if I sign a One Year contract. I always ask the representative for a copy of the TOS and Contract before I sign same and have never receive the information that I requested.
From my friends experience Embarq provides satisfactory service and more choices for the customer. I am again considering Embarq Broadband and will update this review if I can get a written proposal from Embarq sales.

1 edit | There is no written contract It is only a verbal commitment that you will keep the services. The CSR's (outbound telemarketers) don't have any documentation to send you, but it is available online.
If I were the CSR, I would have directed you to this page:
»about.embarq.com/legal/agreement···0708.pdf
And here is the promotion from the website:

High-Speed Internet: $99 early termination fee applies. Performance will vary due to conditions outside of network control and no speed is guaranteed. | Re: There is no written contract I appreciate the information that you provided. Unfortunately the representative I spoke to last week offered the Three Month promotion, but failed to mention that in order to receive the promotion I would have to subscribe to the 3.0Mbps tier.
The representative also indicated that I could choose a higher or lower speed tier at any time without penalty. The early termination fee you mentioned implies a contract.
One other issue is that no speed is guaranteed. I do not know the quality of the outside plant in this area. It has been reported that in some cases a Local exchange carrier in an area where there are insufficient pairs for quality for ADSL transmission to all customers, will frog pairs between the customers that are complaining most vigorously about poor service.
It is difficult to subscribe to a service with no guarantee of quality and a termination penalty if one wants to disconnect service because.
Thanks for the information.

2 edits | Re: There is no written contract I don't believe many ISP's offer a speed guarantee. For a guarantee, you will have to subscribe to business class circuit, such as a DS1 or DS3.
You are not charged an ETF if your pair is having issues and you have allowed Embarq time to fix said issues. If a line cannot be repaired, then you can cancel and the rep will waive any ETF. This is common practice for Embarq.

I live in a rural part of NW Indiana, roughly 9 - 10 miles from the nearest town (5k pop). Embarq recently deployed DSL out into these rural areas, so I had to jump on it. I ordered the 5/768 tier on 2/11/09 via the Embarq website. This was the bundle deal with basic voice for $70. The Zyxel 660 modem arrived Saturday, 2/14/09, while the service was set to be activated on Monday, 2/16.
Got a call around 3 PM on Monday (2/16) to confirm that DSL was ready on my line. So I setup the modem, and it was working. Did a few speed tests and got consistent results of 5/768. »www.speedtest.net/result/412431696.png
The only thing I could say that I am disappointed in is the first hop latency, which is right at 41 ms (same as our Embarq business line at work). A relative of mine who lives a couple miles farther out of town than me sees around 18 ms to the first hop. I do understand the difference between interleave and fastpath...and that not everyone that is on interleave sees the same first hop latency. I talked to a tech that said the equipment I am on does not support fastpath (ADSL2+?).
I will post an update to this review in a week, and follow-up with more updates in the future.
==/ Update - 2/24/09 \==
Someone from Embarq was kind enough to switch my line to fastpath, so my latency has dropped by roughly 20 - 25 ms. Service is still solid, 5000/768 24/7.

==/ Update - 3/1/09 \==
Everything is still going good. However, latency went back up by about 15 ms. There seems to be a 20 ms jump to a level3 hop that was previously much lower. Can't fault Embarq for it though.
