Order placed on July 23. Installed and up on Sept 5th.

I ordered and took advantage of the free install and free hub. I had to sign a 2 year commitment to get it, but from the reviews I've read, it was worth it. The sales tech took my information and had to talk to his supervisor about the free install/hub deal because he didn't know anything about it. I was on hold for about 5 minutes while that was going on. The few questions I asked about the speed and max distance the sales guy couldn't answer. The only question he did have an answer for was how long...45 days. 44 days came and went and I got a call confirming the install for the next day. At 8:30ish AM 2 install techs showed up. They hooked up the hub to the phone line outside and ran a network cable upstairs and set up my computer while the other tech got the 4 phone lines ready to hook up to the hub. By 10am I was 723up/6215down(with tweaks)! They ran into some problems with my alarm system. Seems it wants to be between everything and the beginning of the phone line. By 4pm they had hooked up the 4 phone lines and moved the hub upstairs next to the computers and had both configured. Since the install the only two problems I've had was:

1)TiVO doesn't like the new phone lines. The fix was move it to line 3 (lines one and two both go through the alarm system)

    2) You can't call my phone collect.(not a big deal.)

The price sounds expensive, but when you get practically a T1, 4 phone lines, something like 500 minutes free anywhere in the US long distance and all the phone line toys you could want, it's really not.

I ordered SprintION on their website and waited for three weeks and the installation is still NOT in place! All the line and hardware is there, because the location had PacBell DSL before. More seriously, a Sprint tech coming to test the line speed had disconnected my phone line and left my phone without dial tone for 6 hours! When I found it and called the "SprintION team", they first even attempted to deny it! And said it might be that the local phone company (PacBell) did that. After they realized it was their [Sprint's] mistake, they sent somone to fix the problem. I immediately cancelled my order, because 1) it would be another week's wait (totally 30+ days from my initial ordering), and that's outragously long; 2) the mistake made by the Sprint tech (to disconnect my phone line) was the "last straw" - I cannot tolerate such carelessness and incompetence (I missed serveral important calls as a result).

    SCROLL DOWN FOR THE UPDATE

Ok, I have nothing but a glowing review when it comes to Sprint ION. I contacted them after reading about ION while I was actually looking into Broadband Direct. The usual problems involved in installation that you read about in some of the horror stories here at DSLR did come up but I can positively say that every single problem I ran into originated with SouthWestern Bell.

In my honest opinion that company is probably the root of all evil in this world and clearly should be destroyed for the good of mankind. I don't want to get started on a rant about SWB but I should add that while I don't condone Timothy McVeighs actions in Oklahoma City I do believe that if he was going to do something of that nature he chose the wrong target. Prior to dealing with Sprint I spent a year trying to get DSL from SWB and it was the worst time I have ever had dealing with any company (or individual) about any thing. Now, back to my Sprint review....

The one thing that totally shined about dealing with Sprint was that throughout the process I never once got out of contact with the people at Sprint. None of that "someone will be calling you back shortly" crap happened. In fact most of the time I dealt with only one person who made a point of making sure my order got processed and all of the SWB related problems were overcome. If you get an order going with Sprint for ION and want a guy who will really take care of you and get your order moving you need a guy like Arthur Rimmer. The job he did getting my order processed probably deserves a medal or something.

The problems I had in getting DSL had to do with bad address information at SWB as well as some DSL equipment belonging to IP Communications that had been connected to my line. Did we have DSL with them? No, but as long as it was there no one could touch the thing. After getting the address situation corrected and the equipment removed the problem then turned into trying to get SWB to figure out that the address situation HAD been cleared up and the equipment WAS removed. SWB is so completely mixed up that you can get something done and it can be months (if ever) before the rest of the company knows it's been taken care of. Finally they came out, provisioned the line, and then said it needed to be replaced. Took SWB two weeks to do that and even then they scared the hell out of me. They replaced the line but left it aboveground running across my yard (no big deal) until someone else could come out and bury it but they also left it running across a private drive that runs beside my house. The four people living down that drive spent a few days driving over it before the thing got buried. I was about to just go out and bury it myself the afternoon I came home and found they had finally done it. Then, in doing the job burying the new line they managed to cut the other one buried there and killed my phone for a day or so. Oh, wait...I'm ranting about SWB again. Sorry.

Anyway, back to the ION process. Install took place on the day it was supposed to. Chad who came out to do the work was quick, explained everything completely and did everything asked of him. Chad, if you read this you left your drywall saw at my house and you need to come back and pick that up. Otherwise the rules of tools state I keep it but I'll think of you when I use it.

The service was up and running in an hour or so and it works. It does what it's supposed to do. As I understand it I am at around 12,000 feet and I am getting about 4707 down and 893 up. Also I read much about ping times sucking with ION but the only place I ever run into a problem with that is when I play Quake III and then I still have a ton of servers I can get to in the 40-50 range. Sure there are also a lot of them over 100 but how many servers you gonna play on anyway? I also play Diablo II on Battle.net and I have yet to see it look any slower than a local game so I can't speak for most people but I am satisfied.

Happy customer here and I want everyone to know it. Sprint head honchos reading this need to be aware that Arthur deserves some recognition for this one. I'm talking raise material here. Get busy with the rewarding!

Other people thinking of Sprint ION I can only say if you can get it then get it. I mean that. Great company to deal with. Great service.

I should state that rating of Tech support is a 5 because it's benefit of the doubt. I have had this working for about two weeks and no problems so I can't speak to that part of what they do. Also my time from order to success is an estimate. I have slept several times since I placed my order and the memory isn't what it used to be. Ballpark figure only there. Also Arthur has given me permission to use his name and in Chad's case I am going first name only.

Final note; This week we are getting digital cable installed at the house (getting tired of DirecTV and having to give up watching TV when it rains. Plus it's getting way too expensive for what is offered) and the guy from Charter Cable asked if we were interested in a cable modem.

    "I don't think so"

    Updated on 09/12/01

Ok, so I have discovered my first downside to this service. The speed remains excellent and I am still overall happy with what I have recieved however I want to point out two things that are becoming nagging problems.

    1. The web administration of our accounts is pathetic. On only one occaision since this was set up have I been able to get into the thing and complete a change to one of the user accounts associated with the service. Had I known that I would be seeing this many "The process could not be completed, please try again later" messages I would have surely tried to finish everything up that time because I can't get in there now to save my life. It tells you your password has expired and you need to update it but when you go to update it then it tells you that can't be completed. Once in while you can (for reasons that I cannot understand) log in as the primary account and administrate the other user accounts but then when you try an reset the passwords on those accounts that process "cannot be completed, please try again later". It's insane. I am a Systems Administrator at work and this isn't a lack of understanding of the process folks. This is crap software for trying to keep your accounts straight.

    2. The line I had originally is still waiting to be ported and for some odd reason the one Sprint installed just stopped working all of a sudden. All of the jacks that are connected to that line are dead and a little time on the working phone line with tech support revealed nothing. Tomorrow someone is supposed to be out here to look at it and I will tell you how that goes when the time comes.

On the voice side I don't have any expertise so I can only report what I see. The odd way that Sprint and Earthlink piggyback around on each other I suspect is the reason that administrating accounts is such a mess. Time spent on the phone with their tech support people was wasted. She basically did the reset of the user account password and then told me what it was. She left me with instructions to change it to something else as soon as I could but when I went in to do just that guess what I got?

"The process can not be completed at this time, please try again later..."

This is not something I am ready to ditch the service over yet but it's a pain and I ain't seeing any love yet from my buddies at Sprint. I will keep you posted on how this goes.

8/1/01 when calling into tech support for downed newsgroups (yet again) I found out that Directlink was going away on September 24th (still is? maybe? maybe not?). At that time I decided to go with a big company ISP (since first Cyberramp went south and now Directlink seems to be doing it). I narrowed my choice to two - Verizion (DSL & ISP 1.5 down/384up - $80 a month) or Sprint ION (DSL,ISP 8.0 down/1.0up, phone, & LD w/200mins a month - $105 a month). I decided to go with Sprint ION. I called in and told I woul have to wait until 8/17/01 for a DSLAM to be installed in the local CO

8/17/01 I made a call to sprint ION today and the DSLAM has been installed in the local CO.

The ION phone rep went though a checklist of items that I needed to check, to make sure the transition would be streamlined. Exact name on account, no blocks on phone line, etc. He confirmed that my install date would be the Sept 12. I said that I was kind of concerned since it leaves less than 2 weeks to get my DSL transfered. He assured me that it would be no problem.

8/20/01 - Called Verizon. There is a 1-900 block on the phone that I asked to be re-move. I received a voice mail call informing me the change was done

8/21/01 - coworker said to check to make sure that IONs DSL isnt running a VPN to the house or at the CO. If it does, it could interfere with work's VPN - call ION and they assure me that they do not use VPN and I should have no problems with work VPN.

8/27/01 - Received e-mail from Sprint ION Install Date: 9/21/01

Pre-Install Date: 9/4/01 - Verizon is to have a line provisioned (installed) to my house that will support the standards associated w/ Sprint ION services.

8/27/01-Called in to Michelle about install date being different on email. 9/21 is the new date. She can't/won't explain why the date is 9/21 instead of 9/12. A loop is what is being installed on the 9/4/01 so Sprint can run tests for services. A request was sent to Verizon to install the loop. Michelle says that once the loop is installed, they can run their tests the next day (9/5/01) and schedule the install within the next 7-10 days. She said she would call me back on the 9/5/01 (she never called).

9/5/01 - Called in to ask if test has been done. Phone tech said that it didn't show in the paperwork. She puts me on hold and calls the testing department. I am then told that the CO is down and until they come back up, no tests can be done - no ETA. I then ask how my DSL could still be running if the CO was down, but got speculation as to why (understandable - Verizon owns CO and Im sure doesn't want to share issues/problems freely with other companies).

9/6/01 - Called in to see if CO is back up. Phone tech says that it can take up to 72 hours to run tests (why was I told "the next day" by earlier rep???). Was not given clear info if CO was up or not.

9/7/01 - Called in to see if tests were run. Shelbra informs me that the tests were not run. She will put an emergency test through which will guarantee a response from Verizon in 24 hours. Since this is Friday, that means a response may not come back until Monday. She states that a loop test is run - if it doesn't come back 100%, then they have to have the local phone company work on the line. When it does, they schedule the install. During that time period, the loop test will be done 2 more times. If at any time the loop test fails (any number of reasons including local phone company removing loop) then they would have to contact the local phone company again.

Shelbra promises to call me Tuesday or Wednesday with the reponse to the test. I inform her at this time that not only am I upset AND concerned that I'll get changed over before I lose my current DSL, but If I don't get a solid answer by Friday, Sept 14th. I will have to cancel my order and go with Verizion (since they promise 5 working days to transfer my current ISP from Directlink to Verizon). I don't want to do that since I really like what ION has to offer. She assures me that she will escalate this issue. I also am concerened that I'll even get a callback since another tech promised to contact me and never did. I am also told that 284up/284down is the guaranteed minimum! (nowhere is that listed) I don't feel that that is fair. Shelbra give me her extension so that I may call back to speak directly with her if I don't receive a call.

9/11/01 called in to check status of test. Spoke w/Arthur. No notice of previous call to Shelbra. Still having problems with test - this time it seems to be w/ the Verizon DSLAM. Waiting now for Verizon to give new lines for tests.

I then asked for a supervisor. I spoke w/ Ginger. I wanted someone to voice my complaints to.

9/13/01 - Called back in to Arthur (am). He has to check w/ provisioner but provisioner it away at the moment. Will now wait for Arthur to call me back. No call back by 2pm - called Arthur and he still has not heard back from provisioner.

Arthur called me at the end of the day letting me know he still was waiting to hear back from provisioner.

9/14/01 - Called back in (2pm) since I have not heard from anyone. Arthur's line is busy so I went to next avail rep (Ernestein). Says that the note in my account states that Verizon has no additonal lines on the DSLAM to provision to me so my order is put on hold with no ETA. I explain that I am upset and this is not acceptable. Rep tries to call provisioner, but nobody answers - she states that they sometimes don't answer their phone. Rep is going send me an email with all the info (only has an order # then Thanks followed by has her name, phone number and extension). Im told to call in sometime next week.

9/14/01 - I get home to find a tag on the door saying the pre-test was successful (by Jay) and that my install is scheduled for 9/21/01. I call in to verify and find out that the tech who came to my door was mistaken (WTF???). I start to complain again about how that is unacceptable since I will be losing my current DSL on the 24th. Im extremely irate and want to speak to a manager. I am transfered to a supervisor (Shameka) who I tell my whole tale to, again. She apologizes and offers me a $50 credit. She says the problem is still with Verizion not changing over the pairs. She also states that from this point on, she will deal directly with me and help me to get the install as soon as possible. If the testing can be done soon, and an earlier install date opens up, she will try and move up my install date.

9/17/01 - I get an email from shameka that states that Verizon will be back out to my house on the 9/21/01 to install the loopback (again? or maybe because the pair are being switched to a different DSLAM?). I call up and speak to Shameka to verify that this is the case - my install date is still the 10/4/01.

9/23/01 - I called in to check status of test. Verizon did not come out on the 9/21/01, but re-scheduled to 9/24/01. Will wait some more....

9/26/01 - received email that loop was tested and that installation will be on 10/4/01. I called in to verify with Shameka, but she is in a meeting. She called back later to verify that the testing has been done - NOTE: nobody is willing to give out any information about distance or speeds. Install date cannot be moved closer due to Verizon requires 7 days notice for changeover.

10/4/01. Tech showed up to do intall was ontime and very friendly. His name is Ron. He was very concerned not only with the installation, but also the cosmetic appearance of his work (fantastic job on both). Went through everything with me and gave extra service (not only did he run lines cleanly and professionally, but in the attic he made sure they were stapled up and out of the way).

10/12/01. Im very happy now. The speeds are incredible! There is some questions on who to call when having mail problems (earthlink or sprint), but other than that, everything at this point seems rock solid. My phone works great. I've not had any issues changing my phone options. Calls are alot like cell phone calls, but for the most part pefectly clear (every once in awhile, I'll get a slight echo of my voice, but not often). Im glad I toughed it out.

10/18/01 ARRRRRGH! SprintION is going under. I called in today (couldn't get through yesterday - phones disconnected) and was told that if I cancelled my account now, I get a $400 credit. If I don't do it now, no guarantee that I'll get anything. The definate cut off date is December 31st but maybe sooner if local states allow Sprint to shut down early.

NOW I HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER @#@$! ISP. DAMN THEM! I even asked before this started.. I get two weeks of SprintION and now I have to look again. DAMN THEM!

11/21/01 NOW I GET A BILL IN THE MAIL FOR $297.05 (actually 497.03 - 199.98 credit for 2 yr contact agreement to cover hardware and installation)! They tried to bill me for a month plus pro-rating, even though I only had the service for 2 WEEKS! WTF???

I called in and spoke to Debbie in billing. After 30 mins on the phone, she finally agrees to charge me $125.00 (99.99 for the XT1 service, 5 for the line charge, and the rest in taxes) even though it's still high for only two weeks, I agree. I then ask about the $50 credit that should be coming to me from Shamika. Debbie sees nothing about it on the account. She calls Shamika, and luckily, Im remembered, so I do get the $50 credit. Now my bill is down to $75.00.

Now I get to wait and see if I'll get my $400 check. Debbie said it should be in December.

EDIT: No more ION, guys, as most of you know. That renders the following review moot.

There are no horror stories with this install. Everything went just like it was supposed to. Larry was a very friendly and competent installer, and he had the job done in something just over 3 hours. I am now getting 5059 k down and 535 k up. I mainly switched from PacBell DSL in order to improve my upstream speeds. I was getting 100 k a second, and now I'm doing more than 5 times better. And 5 megabits per second down stream? Let's just say I am not exactly growing old waiting for downloads any more.

ION promises "up to" 8 megabits per second down and I think 1 megabit up. I am definitely happy with the 5 megabits I am getting. The cost is $125, but it includes a second phone line and 400 minutes of long distance per month. The sound quality on the phone lines a the same as a regular phone... I cannot tell a difference, and I've so far had no irritating problems where area codes must be dialed for local calls, etc.

One thing I cannot yet get to work is the voice mail service that comes with the system, but I'm sure that will be worked out. Also, none of the other phone jacks in my house work.... only the ones on the Sprint Ion modem itself. These might seem like deal breakers, but I see them as minor technical problems that will be fixed soon.

For those wondering about the hardware they install, I had been led to believe that it was some huge box that would sit like a monster on one wall of your room. Actually, the only box installled is no bigger than a DSL modem and in fact is a bit smaller than the Alcatel 1000 that PacBell gave me.

The control Center web application that is used to control the phones works fine, except that one feature, called I think "configure phones" appears to not have been implemented yet.

All in all I am quite happy, and kudos to Larry for a professional install.

P.S. for you macolytes out there, my system is a G4/400 running OS9.2 and OS X 10.1 developer release. Both work perfectly.

First saw ION demo'd in Vegas three years ago. Was finally told it was available in my area/phone exchange (in Santa Monica, CA) last summer (2000), but up until Aug. 2001 this never proved to be actually true. I'd apply for service and then find out six weeks later (usually only when I would finally call, rather than being notified by Sprint) that the local telco office (GTE at first, later Verizon) "didn't have the room for Sprint's equipment."

Miraculously after ordering ION for the fourth time this past July, I made it all the way through to the install (they delayed it six days from the initial estimate, but hey, what's 6 days after a year!). I got an email on 8/21 that the telco had provisioned my line and installation would go ahead on 9/5 and I was directed to read and fill out the pre-install questionnaire/info online.

I called Sprint yesterday afternoon and they confirmed I was slated for this morning between 8 and 12. Sure enough, a knowledgeable and friendly installer named George called at 8:11 to say he'd be here between 9:30 and 10 (they sent him from Covina, over an hour away-- this in the LA metro area, where there are probably six million people beteen my home and Covina-- you'd think they'd have a few more offices!)

He arrived at 9:20 and within fifteen minutes realized that the supposedly freshly dropped, "clean, dry" line that Verizon had tagged for Sprint to use was in fact my existing primary line, which has dial tone and my existing DSL service already on it. The Verizon installer, had he actually tested the line he tagged for Sprint, would have heard dial tone and known it wasn't the line provisioned for Sprint.

So Sprint put in a trouble ticket with Verizon which they are supposed to respond to within 24 hours and a team actually arrived around 330 and took three hours to get a proper line installed. I then called Sprint and raised hell to have an installer come back out the next morning. (Another day that I had to take off from work!) One of the Sprint reps called back last evening to say it was on for today and he called again at 730 this morning to confirm. The installer called at 810, showed up at 9, and worked till 130 to get the hub installed, Interet access working, and to show me the ropes. He pre-installed the phone lines so that when Verizon can finally port the numbers over (now set for Sept. 14), all I have to do is snip two pairs and plug a jack into the hub.

I then removed the Ethernet out from the hub's direct connection to the local PC and plugged it into my router in place of my existing DSL box's output.

So far, so good. Getting very consistent speeds (for several hours now) of 2700 down and 685 up, pings at 90, on both a Win2000 and a WinXP PC. At the NAT itself outside the house, the installer was getting 4000. (My previous Verizon DSL was averaging 700-1100 down, 120 up for $96.50 a month. So for about $28 a month more, I'm getting 3 times the download speed, over 5 times the upload, plus 5 email boxes instead of two, local phone service for two lines including voice mail, caller ID and forwarding and 400 minutes of long distance.) So if the Voice Over IP works OK when they finally port my two phone numbers, I'd say this was a very good deal ad perhaps even worth the three-year wait.

Should I have taken all the tales of woe posted in this forum more seriously?

After three years of waiting, will Sprint now dump ION the day after I finally get it all up and running?

    Stay tuned...

This will be short and to the point...Had Speakeasy DSL service before and was very happy with them but wanted more value for my money being I was paying $89.95 from Speakeasy/Covad for 1.5/384 (getting 1.25/325). Sprint ION offers the X1 package for $99.95 for up to 8meg/1meg (getting 4.8meg/825), 2 static ip's (they tell you one but they always assign you two) with one voice line with caller id (name & number), call waiting caller id, call forwarding, 200 free minutes of domestice long distance and voice mail (with the ability online to adjust the number of rings before answering). YOU GET IT ALL FOR JUST $99.95!!! I was very happy from start to finish...the Sprint ION team actually called me and moved my install date up one week...and the techs were here at 8:00 am on the dot!!! I was impressed. I signed up for 24 months which came with free equipment and install and 3 free months of service!!! The only question I have to ask out there...Is there anyway to make my C50 change to 100mbits...of course I have it plugged into a switch but still it only connects at 10mbits!!...

So far SPRINT is by far the best value for the buck!!!

Place my order on 7/20 was installed on 8/30.
Since I was dumping Ameritech I didnt care for the old phone numbers which made the process much easier. The instalation process took about an hour and a half.
I have 3 months free of service plus no contract.
This is a sweet deal for me .
Speedwise before tweaking 3.5 Mb and 568k upload
After tweaking 5.96 Mb and 768k Upload
This is from Toast,Pcpitstop,speed411,bandwidthplace and I have screenshots to prove it. For some odd reason DSLR will not perform a speedtest it seem to timeout everytime.
Only 6800 ft from co plus 2 static IP
    more to follow

The Price of $120 Covers EVERYTHING, from DATA (DSL) to Voice (regular analog for your phone). They give you they're own router and split your voice and data. The Router handles BOTH the Voice and Data. It also has its own internal Battery (which keeps your voice and data up during a power outage). YES BOTH VOICE AND DATA are up during the power outage. Remember the California rolling blackouts?? I have a external UPS (Uninterriuptable power supply) and my System was still up and connected online. I don't know how long it last though. Average connection speed was 9000k - 1100k at first. Now its closer to 6000k - 7000k. Yes I still get speed burst (I've gotten up to 2.4MB) with certain fast servers. I'm about 6000 feet from the CO. Not bad. One thing I still don't get is why they give me a DNS server that takes 5 hops and is in the EAST Coast, rather than 2 hops and here in the West Coast. Some game servers I play on is in Northern California and I have to go to NY first and then come back on a different rout to get there. Maybe thats why my ping is 100+. Overall I'd give Sprint ION a 10 out of 10 for Data and 3 out of 10 for Ping.
