Sometime in early June I ordered the XT4 Sprint ION service. It was 160 a month but it covered 2 static IPs (8000/1000 in reality more like 2000/700), 4 phone lines, and 750 minutes of long distance. Great deal in my mind.
My install date was scheduled for 6/20.
6/20 -- Techs come out here, go to the NID on the side of the house and report no speeds. Set up trouble ticket and off they go. One day of work missed.
7-? -- Techs come out and once again get no speeds. In addition, they tightened the bolt on the NID so much that they had to use a hacksaw to get the thing opened. Leave trouble ticket and look to come back again. Two Days of work missed.
7-15 -- Techs come back out. This time I get speeds. 500/700. They are perplexed...how is my up higher than my down? Trouble ticket and I wait for them again.
7-27 -- Techs come out and go the box. No speeds. In addition one of my lines was dissconnected. A pac bell guy happened to be there and said he could fix it. Sprint would not wait and left. 20 minutes later Pac Bell guy fixes it and I call up sprint. The techs come back out. They look really pissed and expressed their opinions that they wanted to leave several times (in addition how Pac Bell had given me a terrible line and I probably could not get service, I dont care SPrint should take care of the Pac Bell side of things). They start running the line into my office where the hub is supposed to be located. First problem. They have to drill a hole that would let the cable go through. No biggie I thought. I let them drill a hole. The tech doesn't realize what he is doing and gouges and destroys the headerboard on top of my door to my house. That is going to cost close to 1000 bucks to replace. I am angry but I let the install go on. The line is dropped into my office. He hooks up the C100 hub tells me how to put the IP in and it works. Phone porting will have to be delayed 10 days says the tech. Ok I figure. He doesn't bother to hook up my second computer and does not tell me that I need crossover cables. So I have no idea how the email, the second PC, or the phones are supposed to be hooked up. I called Tech Support and they could not figure it out. After 3 hours I discovered I had to use crossover cables. Arg. Still don't know what is up with the email. Speeds in the house are 1500/700 and very stable. No voice yet. I have to wait until Monday to bring up the matter of replacing my header board. Techs are supposed to be out here on that day as well.
Right now I am very angry, the techs did a half-a**ed job and left me with damages.
The Voice will be ported over soon and I will have an update once that happens.
I will also inform if I get the money for the headerboard in addition to additional compensation I feel I deserve.
I forgot to mention that I am 12,800 feet from the CO, but the Sprint line itself is more like 17,000. You can always count on Pac Bell to provision a great line!
4 times seems like a rediculous amount of times to have these problems with Sprint. Sprint should have stayed in contact with Pac Bell and had everything set up right on the second time. Even better, the first time. Not the fourth.
I have another bone to pick with Sprint. When I called up the Cust Service department i asked them to send someone out when I was not here to make sure that everything was in order. He told me that they were getting 1800/600 and that they just needed me to be home to get the install going. Of course the reality was that there was no speeds and the speeds they did get were below that by a few hundred k. Just a minor gripe though.

Was intruduced to ION about 8 weeks ago and thought it sounded great for the money. It wasn't yet available in my area though, but only a few weeks away. My biggest concerns were porting my DSL service from Verizon, as I am running DNS and Mail server and wanted as smooth a transition as possible. Sprint told me that I should have been able to have both lines up together, but they were wrong...so now my server is out of commision until DNS changes find their way through the Internet.
As for the pre install, I received several calls reminding me of the install and recieved a call from the tech 30 minutes before the scheduled time and he was there on time! The whole install took only 2 hours, as I let him off easy with the wiring of the phones, as I did it myself. I recieved the C50 hub for the 2 voice lines and he gave me two static IP's and no PPPoE. Both his speed tests with the techs tester and my dlsreports tests show between 5 and 6 Mb download and around 800Kb up (actually was getting about 1.5Mb down until he pointed me to a sprint website that had the registry tweak file, probably same as one at dslreports). I am very please with the speed, one of the main reasons I switched.
As for the voice side, quality is about the same as regular POTS, or maybe just a bit less, but fine for me. My Voice mail isn't working yet, even after setting it all up as directed and I can't place any toll free calls (800, 888, 877 or 866). The tech noticed it during the install and said they are having this problem in my area code and they are working on it....but I can't call their tech support on voice mail until it's fixed!!!
Finally, the Control Center website....it is really bad!!! It is VERY slow, often get page not found and have to refresh, icons don't show up for making changes to the account. I think that most of the problems are due to congestion, as later at night in the west, it is better, but very frustrating during the day. They NEED to improve this site!
Overall, though, I am very pleased with the service (at least my first day) It took exactly 30 days from when I ordered! I now have to get my earthlink dial-up account ported over and I'll be set. Will be saving at least $15 a month by consolidating these services and get close to 10 times more speed in both directions from what I had.
I will post back as to how the VM and 800 problems get resolved.
***************************************************************************
Update 7/27 - It's been two days now and all is well. The voice mail problem was fixed the next day and the routing for toll free was resolved today (second day after install). Speed is still great and it seems all my DNS info has now fully converged on the Internet, so I'm back in business.
As for "cyberhh's" comments below about getting only 1 IP address with XT2, that is what the website says, but I've talked with a Sprint Tech about it and he said that you really are assigned 2, as that is how they have to provision it and that is in fact what happened with me at install...tech gave me 2 IP's. I am only trusting to use 1 of them, as you never know if they will reclaim the other one, but if I need to use one, it is there for me now.
I will check back in after a few months to let you know how all is going. TTFN

Update 7/25/2001
Things on the telephone front continue to improve. New features have been added in the last few weeks. We now have "stutter dialtones" to alert that there is voicemail waiting and CallerID now has names as well as numbers for both regular CID and call-waiting CID. Updates to the management website have had some rough edges which need polishing but functionality continues to improve.
A fine job by SprintION!
First, I was one of the disenfranchised Zyan customers who was unceremoniously dumped on 5/2. I ordered ION online and was given an approximate install date of 6/1 or 6/4. I received several emails during the waiting period reminding me of how good it was going to be. Got a call on Sunday reminding that Tuesday was my install day. Got a call at 8AM from the installer saying he would be at my house within 30 minutes. Great communication.
About 2 weeks ago Verizon came and pulled a new pair of wires from the pole. ION confirmed this within 48 hours.
I ordered XT4 service with 4 voice lines and 2 static IPs. I was porting one existing number. Installer tested line and reported nearly 8Mbps. Great. Got a sequence of three new voice number in sequential order. Very nice. Installed them exactly as I requested. Gave me the configuration sheet and I configured my system (W2000). Install was going slowly, couldn't get hub to connect with server. Two phone calls and that was solved. Installer tested each line both inbound and outbound. All great.
Voice quality is very good. Web based software to manipulate phone features is a bit clumsy but workable.
Comes with Earthlink service which I did not install. My only utilization of Earthlink is for SMTP and NEWS servers.
Data rate measures 1.7Mbps/864Kbps using www.pcpitstop.com. Not sure where my 8 Mbps are. I suspect I am getting routed through a T-1 somewhere along the line. I will still be happy if I can get T-1 speed from each of my ports.
Update 6/6/01: After checking out DSLReports Tweaks section I adjusted the RWIN for my system and miraculously data rate jumped to 6.8Mbps!! Remarkable!! It is alarming that only diligent work by folks like DSLReports allows the service to reach it's full potential. This is something Microsoft should automatically calibrate as part of ICM.
All systems go!

I was a Comcast Cable, @Home customer for 3 years prior to making my move to SprintION. I had 2 phone lines and the cable connection, so I opted for the package which provides 2 telephone lines, 400 minutes of Long Distance and a DSL line. Since I had never experienced a problem with Comcast and was consistently getting speeds of 3000+/125 kbps I was a little hesitant to make the move to SprintION, mainly due to the question of speed. Checking with DSL reports for distance, I was at a distance 4826 ft. In my conversations with Sprint they told me that they DO NOT cap speeds and my speed would be a function of, among other things, distance.
Ordered the service on April 15th and by May 10th the installation guys were here. They showed up on time and proceeded to check the line speed. They told me I was at around 5,000 kbps. Nice surprise! I told them to go for the install, which they completed within 2hours. I had no line problems and no additional cabling was necessary. They synced the telephone lines and I was rolling. Very painless.
Telephone lines
Clear, no echo. 400 minutes of long distance comes in handy since I make a lot of state to state calls from my home office. Rate for calls over the 400 minutes is at $0.07 a minute. Not a bad deal. I've noticed no difference in quality from PacBell to Sprint.
DSL Connection
Since the installation I have checked my line speed both up and down at numerous sites and have experienced the following:
DSL Reports ** Speed 4756(down)/676(up) kbps **
Bandwidthplace ** Speed 4936(down)/528(up) kbps ** McAfee.com ** Speed 576.37 KBps(down)/No upload test ** PCPitStop ** Speed 5386(down)/712(up) kbps** Both the upload speeds and the downloads are far better than with Comcast@Home. Again VERY satisfied
PreSales Information
The presales info was a little disconcerting only because they could not tell me what kind of speeds I could expect. They would guarantee 384K which was a major drop from Comcast. I told them if my speeds didn't match Comcast or better, then there was going to be no SprintION. Worked out better than expected. Since I really had no intent to switch back, I agreed to a one year contract. Promotion at that time in this area, provided for free installation with a 1 year contract. Done deal
Tech Support
I haven't had the need to call tech support other than to ask about 3 way dialing. That service is not available yet in Southern California, however, I was told that it will be available by the end of summer. That is an inconvenience. Hopefully Sprint lives up to their promise
EMail, News
Sprint bought Earthlink who acts as their E-Mail and Usenet provider. Sprint and Earthlink don't have their act together here at all. Earthlink's E-Mail leaves a lot to be desired, so keep another E-Mail address like, Hotmail, Yahoo, or another domain, if you use one. Login names for SprintIOn and Earthlink are not always the same, which is a pain in the butt. This is my only complaint about the service. Usenet, like with any other ISP, sucks. They throttle speeds which effectively takes you back to dial up speed. Again, use an independent Usenet provider
Bottom Line
I'm very pleased with move to SprintION. I have tweaked my settings and can't get much more out of the DSL. The phones work great, but the lack of three way calling is a hindrance. The 400 minutes of long distance works well and $0.07 a minute is a pretty decent deal. If you have your own domain and get your E-Mail through another service or your own domain, then this is a great deal. I would highly recommend SprintION to anyone, at least anyone that is within a similar distance as me.

First, I had SwBell for 2 years. Not bad service, but nothing to crow about either. I decided to go with ION because of the features it advertised and its speed.
The order process was incredibly un-coordinated. Dates kept being pushed back. I'm not saying that's Sprint's fault, because they have to deal with SwBell in my case, and Bell will set their own schedule. I'm mentioning it just as a point of annoyance for me.
The install tech was great. A good guy who really knew wiring. Initially there were problems, though. Upon switching to the new circuit Sprint had run to my house, they had difficulty establishing my local loop. It picked up and then dropped repeatedly. However, at this point I was happy because when it was up my download speed was at 3.5Mbps. The installer had to call tech support, and the issue was a setting on my DSLaM. They corrected the issue, and up came my local loop.
After the loop was established the tech hung up the phone with his tech-support, and told me that after they corrected the problem, my circuit was turned downed and capped at 1Mbps. He didn't know why, and hadn't heard of it before. I'm pissed.
Anyway, a few glitches (none of which were the installer's fault) later and service is up. Voice clarity is great, and it's eerie not having any line noise when talking with someone. The only downside is the capped speed. If I hadn't known I could recieve 3.5Mbps, I may not be pissed.
Calling ION tech support afterward, I asked why they had capped me. They said it was to ensure voice quality. I told them that their answer indicated their infrastructure couldn't handle the product they were trying to sell.
Sad thing is, I work for Sprint as a network engineer in another division, so I kind of understand what's happened. But, I'm still not too happy. We'll see. I may ditch it and go back to Bell for local.

Order to installation took close to 2 months. Exterior installation of wiring was very sloppy. DSL was working that day. It took about 3 more weeks to get the local service cut over.
Charge was supposed to be $119 per month, DSL, local, 400 minutes LD, voice mail, etc. After a month they tried to increase it by $5 for access to the local telco. Fought with them on that and they waived it for the 2 years of the service agreement. To this day I still get long distance bills from my old carrier. I call Sprint, they give me a credit, but they can't seem to get it fixed.
I've had several outages (both voice and data) that lasted more than a day. My voice mail often does not pick up. I don't know this until friends and family that have been trying to leave a message finally get me in person and tell me so. Very annoying.
Calls frequently don't complete. I call someone, I get silence for a while, I get a recording. Or, someone calls me, the phone rings once, the caller gets disconnected, I get no one on the line.
I have two IP addresses, two ports on the hub, so basically a little local area network for my desktop and laptop. Very nice. DSL is fast, 1.5mb to 2mb downloads.
Customer service is always very nice and pleasant on the phone, but they seem to be poorly trained. I have trouble getting them to understand my problems with their service, it takes too long to get things fixed, they say they'll call back and never do. Today I called because my voice mail wasn't picking up, they put me on hold for a few minutes, came back and tried to explain to me why my email should be working. Hello?!?
I've tried forever to get my second number to forward to my cell phone (that works), my cell phone forwards to my first number if no answer (that works), but voice mail won't pick up, instead the caller is asked to enter their mail box address. I've tried to explain the problem, get it fixed - still waiting.
Features from Qwest I miss. Caller ID from Qwest has name and number, only number from Sprint. Voice mail has stutter dial tone if there are messages with Qwest, with Sprint I have to dial in to voice mail to check. With Qwest I had "one-number" service forwarding home number to cell phone if cell phone is on. Of course Sprint can't do this because they don't know that the cell phone is on.
The quality and features of voice service is so disappointing I'm going to have to go back to Qwest for local service, and maybe Sprint Broadband for DSL. Sprint ION is just not ready for prime time, and not worth the money.

Voice and Data for $100 with free long distance? what a deal.
My only problem has been with Earthlink and their "email service". Sprint ION has partnered with them and it took nearly a month for Sprint and Earthlink to quit pointing fingers at each others database.
The data speeds are terrific. I can play CS and download multiple files without affecting my ping times in game.
Highly recommended, but don't cancel your hotmail account.

Hello,
I'm back... if you will notice my previous reviews of both Telocity & RoadRunner service at my home. After canceling Telocity, I ordered Sprint ION... 45 days later... it was installed.
First things first...
I called with NO intention on ordering... although I did end up ordering. (call me a sucker). I had read all the bad reports on DSLReports of Sprint ION, that I had LOTS of questions before committing. The fact is, I talked to a person name Sedrick J******* who worked in the Lenexa call center... on May 1st, 2001... told me a few things that turned out to be false. First, he told me that calls to Lawrence where in my local calling area.. this appears to be false as I must dial long distance to get to Lawrence. He also advised me Sprint ION had changed their policy lead time from 45 days to only 30 days... and confirmed a install date of 12pm - 6pm - Thursday, May 31st.
About a 2 weeks later, SWB was out and did what they needed to do for the Sprint ION part. I figured, WOW this is cool... everything looks like its going as scheduled.... so a few days later I call to get a status update (pointers from DSL Report ION customers) on my order... well, they advised my my install date was for June 15, 2001. I asked, what happened to my May 31st order, the gal that helped (or lack thereof) me advised she had no record of it... and basically acted like I was telling a fib... which was not the case. She also advised that she would get back to me, which was not the case. May 31st came and went, no Sprint ION folks, no phone calls or emails. On June 14th, I figured I'd call and see what was happening. I had almost canceled my install twice, one Sprint PCS employee advised me I should cancel because of all the bad reports from ION customers he had heard, which also went along with all the reports here on DSL Reports. I had almost canceled, but *REALLY* wanted the faster upload speeds and a static IP, something RoadRunner couldn't give me (at least yet).
So anyhow, they told me on the 15th that my install time was between 8-12 on the 15th. This was fine and dandy... in fact.. they never called me, sent an email or anything. I told me wife before I left in the morning... I *know* I will come back home to NO Sprint ION... because if its had news, it will happen to me... story of my life. If things were a disaster so far, they would surely be once the install process started.
Well... Friday came... I left for a interview I had to go to, and my wife waited for the ION truck to roll in... which appeared around 9:30am... and this my friends... is where the whole story turns brighter...
The individual (Matt I believe) showed up and handled himself in a very professional manner, and was awesome. When I arrived back, around 10:30... he already had a dial tone, and the DSL was up and running. He had wired up the phone wire on the outside of the house that I had ran for him, and it was installed nicely. I got in, setup my account... phone worked, it was amazing. The big question remain... what I went through the 45 day wait for.... "HOW FAST IS IT?" He advised me I had 3meg down, and 800 up. YES! (but can it be true). Well, Matt was out of here by 11am, only 90 minutes have he arrived... and everything was working great.
My initial tests proved somewhat disappointing... I could only get 1.6 down, with 800 up... on all tests via DSLReports... and even some other testing that I did.... but the up speed was still more in par with what I had desired... my RoadRunner was still kicking a** and taking names on download speeds (160k/sec (ION) vs 250k/sec (RR)) for the same file within seconds of each other.
Later on that afternoon, my Linux box registered 250k/sec on the DSL via FTP... and so, that pretty much made me happy...
I haven't had it long enough to experience all the problems that are suppose to be coming my way... I did notice some faint "echo" of myself while talking to someone... so its not perfect... but the real test will come tomorrow when I test out my fax and modem on the connections, will it work?
I will keep everyone updated. For those curious, I am around 4500 ft from the CO.

Ok so I'll begin with the day I ordered.
2/14/01- Ordered XT2 package online through the website. I am to get 2 static IPs. Up to 8Mbps/1Mbps. Also includes 2 phonelines with 400 minutes of long distance per month and other goodies you normally pay for through the ILECs.
2/15/01 - Get an e-mail from Sprint ION confirming my order. Ask for best day and time to call.
2/19/01 - Get a phone call from a Sprint ION customer service rep right at the time I asked to be called at. The rep confirmed my order in detail. This is where I encountered my first problem. The CSR said I would have to port over the second number I wanted ported during or after installation because if it being under a different account name. I said no problem as long as I can get it switched over since the combining of the two accounts is part of the reason I am switching to Sprint ION.
We setup the inital install date as 4/9/01.
Date Unknown - About 2 weeks before my install date GTE (Verizon) tech shows up unannounced to put the line in. He sees that we have an exsisting DSL line and wants to take it down so he doesn't want to drag a new line. I tell him no as it is necessary for work. He tries to find a new line but comes to find out that the remaining pairs on the pole are bad. He says they are going to have a different tech come out to do the line because he doesn't have the truck to drag a new line. He does the line from the pole to the MPOE box.
The next day a different GTE guy shows up and finishes the line install and cleans up the connections. Line ok'd by Sprint.
Not hearing anything from Sprint about the install I call them to get a status check. The CSR says there is a trouble ticket open for an issue that she can't tell me about since it's a in-house issue. Getting this information or should I say non information made me a little mad but I said ok and she said someone will call.
4/7/01 - Get a call from Sprint and they let me know that the install is going to be delayed 2 weeks since they are not ready to do the install yet. They say they are not completely ready at the CO and it will take 1 week to get it ready and 1 week to get back on the schedule. Being a DSL installer I understand and say ok no problem. I would rather they have everything working perfectly instead of get the service and have problems with it.
4/20/01 - Get a call saying that my istall is going to happen on 4/23/01 in the morning and that the technicians will call about 30 mins prior to their arrival.
4/23/01 - Get the phone call from the technicians. They show up about 30 mins after they called as promised. One tech shows goes outside and starts to take a look at the line while the other tech looks for a grounded outlet. Well here is where some fun began. First of all I find out that I only have 3 grounded outlets in the house and of course none are close to the room the modem/hub is to be installed. The tech outside comes to find that our loop is no longer there. I was expecting that to happen since GTE took our phones lines out 3 days prior by chopping the lines and switching them at the B-box. So Sprint opens a trouble ticket with GTE.
2 hours later GTE shows up and fixes the line. At the same time though it seems that our loop length has grown. I call back into Sprint to setup a new install date.
Between install attempts I do some electrical work and ground a outlet in the room as needed by Sprint.
5/8/01 - Final and successful install attempt. Techs call and say what time they will be showing up in the morning again. They arrive right at the time they said they would. They put on their blue booties even though I let them know they don't have to. They test the outlet and the loop. From outside they get test speed of 4928 down/ 896 up. They disconnect my exsisting DSL line with my permission. They get the line inside and test it from there. Speed test as 3761down/704 up. I disreguard the inside test. Techs are very informative and give me the welcome kit. They ask about the line porting. I explain what happened when I ordered. They say it will probably take 10 days to get the second line ported over. The line quality checks out to be great. No dialing or calling problems that are plastered all over this site. The techs hook up the modem/hub (C-100). We test out the connection and download a file from a sprint website. We get our 2 static IPs and the techs do the wiring so when the 2nd line is ported over all I have to do is make a quick connection inside then outside to get it running over the jacks that I want it to.
Supervisors show up and check the work and are very happy just like me. After getting my login name and password reset my install is complete in about 1hr 45mins.
I test the line through this website and get a test speed of 2420down/713up kbps. After messing around with the speed tweak I now get a constant 4538down/821up kbps. I am about 9500 feet from the CO. My line quality test on this site shows this »/quality/nil/406481. I have done many ping test to check my first hop time and get a constant 27ms to it using the normal 32byte pings.
Overall I am very happy with my service. my speed is wonderful ( I was at 384/256 with earthlink, more like 305/220 though). My ping times are great. The phone quality is near perfect (very slight echo on some calls but most of the time can't tell it's a digital line). I have called into tech support to get my e-mail setup and to try to get that second line ported over. My hold times were no more than 5 mins. After a few calls about the line porting I finally got someone to help me out and get the ball rolling. The line should be ported on 5/30/01 I will update when and if that happens.
If you are looking into getting this service I highly recommend it. Being a DSL installer I know that the problems I had do happen but not to everyone it just depends on how good your ILEC techs are. So once again get the service if you can and if you have anymore questions post them or e-mail me.
Update for Line Porting.
5/30/01
I called Sprint 2 days prior to the line porting date to verifiy that it was going to happen. Everything was ready to go. They had scheduled a truck roll to make sure that everything would go through correctly.
Got a call from the field tech prior to his arrival. I was glad to see that it was the same 2 techs that did my install (Kevin M. and I never got the other guy's name). There were some issues during the line porting. They ported the line over but made one mistake in the DSLAM. After spending time on the phone with his contacts trying to fix the problem my second line was porting over and working wonderfully.
It's been a month now that I've had the service and I am still extremely happy. Everything is running great. I'm glad I switched over to Sprint ION.
