Modem Puchase: $159.95 (12-month contract)
Installation: Free with modem purchase (promotion), free installation of cable outlet
Monthly: $29.95
Equipment: Motorola SURFboard Modem
Claimed line speed: 3200/128kbps
Actual line speed: approx. 4800/120kbps
IP: DHCP

AMAZING SERVICE!!!!!!! Much much faster than Sympatico HSE. My line speed is significantly faster than Sympatico, with download speeds in excess of 600kiloBYTES/sec. Upload is constant however, at a slow 15k/s. My IP hasn't changed since the service was installed! Also, my pings are very good. On Napster, I get pings around 14 - 22 most of the time.

Installation was scheduled between 7:30am-12pm, tech arrived at 12:15. Called first to say he would be late, however. Installation was fast and simple, installed new cable outlet and set up my computer. This modem has a built in USB port, eliminating the need for a NIC or USB interface.

Service is reliable, and I haven't experienced ANY downtime. Getting faster speeds than they claim. Little slow-down during peak times; connection never falls below 2500kpbs. Tech support is a joke. You spend hours waiting for NOTHING. Just hope nothing goes wrong!

All in all, it is the best service around Montreal for the money.

Incredibly Fast Downloads for the Price
Uploads are really slow for a broadband connection
It is the best widely available broadband provider in Montreal

Excellent download speeds for what you pay (usually around 2.8 Mbits/s if the server is fast enough). Late at night, speed is incredible, usually around 4 Mbit/s though I've hit 5.5 Mbit/s a few times.

Uploads on the other hand are brutal, I never got over 18 kbit/s, so if you're going to be uploading loads of material look elsewhere.

Ping time is good, 82 ms with doctor ping, although a lot of the ones that bring up the average (100 ms and more) are in the south-west coast of the US and I'm in the Eastern part of Canada.

Installation was painless (and free), 2 technicians came and got it working in about an hour: they installed a splitter on my coaxial cable, a realtek (read "cheap-ass") ethernet card in the computer and set up the email. I would have done it myself but hey, you can't argue with free.

Haven't used tech support yet but i hear they're pretty clueless.

Anyways pretty sweet service if its mostly for web browsing and viewing righ-media content especially if you compare it to the cost a similar service would cost in the US

btw i'm using a samsung modem so the 6 gig download / 1 gig upload doesn't affect me

In November of 1999 I decided to give my parents highspeed Internet access as a Christmas persent.

They live in Montreal, and I checked with Bell, they were too far from the CO for ADSL, so all that was left was Videotron Cable Internet.

I called Videotron, asked if they could install the service, but bill me for the Internet access portion. They could, I got my mother on the phone, conferenced her in the call so she could authorize the changes (cable tv is in her name).

A week and a half later the cable guy was there, running the cable to the computer room, installed the NIC in their computer and got them all setup.

They have a DHCP assigned IP address, but if they keep the computer on all the time, or at least for a hour every day, they keep the same IP address. This is great for videoconferencing, they have had the same IP address for about 7 months now.

I still get the bills delivered to SF every month, and Videotron doesn't change any late fees either. The payments never make it in on time due to the mail to and from the US being what it is.

I can think of any bad things to say aboyut Videotron or the cable Internet service, I'd use it if I ever had to move to Montreal, sure beats Bell's Sympatico.

Hah!

I don't need you to even say that you live here or not to decide for myself, nothing bad to say about videotron?! Ok, first of all.. Their television service is shit, the offer little english content and the quality is awful. Where I live our full cable plan from them gives us 40 channels. Now to the point, their internet service only let's you get 6 gigs per month! Get with the times.. no one does that any more. That and how can a company like Videotron keep up decent service when their in debt way over their heads... I think we should keep the reviews to residents, no offense. btw.. good luck on getting anyone who understands you on tech support, videotron doesn't seem to hire people who speak any other language than french

Poor baby.....

I know this is not a political board but sometimes i hear or read things that just does not sounds fair.

Hey bud? Do u really feel that opressed? U really sound like a palestinian in GAZA STRIP.....Get real.

Never heard of Surrey,BC? CANADA. A suburb of Vancouver that is 33% chinese.....So a lot of restaurant, stores and banks with chinese ONLY signs. Well, english people over there are getting pissed. Why?......... Because they dont feel home anymore. They feel a lack of respect. Wich i undertand. U have to gain respect buddy, ur not born with it.

By the way, if u think english canadian tv is better u get a finger up ur nose. I've seen Rogers in BC and its all US content......Wow!!!! Get a life.

Oh yeah......Videotron really sucks, this part is true. Tv and internet. Only good thing about Videotron is that u can buy the modem. I think Sympatico is a bit expensive. 50$ a month with rental of modem and taxes.....Hmmmmmmm Canadian taxes. Two damn taxes provincial and federal. Great! The best country in the world. Or i should say the largest propaganda ever.

I unfortunately got the Motorola modem, so they can and do charge me if I go over my 6 GB / month download limit. Extra cost is an expensive $2 / 100 MB.
Installation was a bit chaotic because two technicians come to your house and they came in the wrong order for me.
Download speed is great. Upload speed sucks at 16 KB / s.
The service has been reliable with only rare short outages.
The news server was good until 2 weeks ago. It now sucks, because many large messages are incomplete. Videotron claims they're working on upgrading the server to alleviate the problem.
Tech support sucks. Calling them requires waiting around on hold for a very long time. They respond to e-mails - after a week!
Due to the download / upload limit forget Videotron if file transfers are your priority.
Despite some hassles, CDN$35 for high speed access is an excellent deal.

I decided to go with this service(cable) after much thought and comparison to what the local Telco was offering (Bell Sympatico). Have been on with them for 6 months now and have no complaints.Ordering has fast and easy, 2 tech. guys came to the house to do the hook-up on the day and time that was promised.

Have tweaked my system a bit to get faster speeds, but generally have about

2400-2600 dn /125 up. Price is right at $34.90 p/mth including modem rental (Motorola CyberSurfr) Also took advantage of free install offer and Govmt. rebate for famillies to get on line (although it is not as if we were not on line before)and our bottom line cost is $23.00 p/mth taxes included. So it works out just as inexpensively to have broadband as compared to paying for regular dial-up.We live in west-end Montreal, and thus far "sharing" of bandwith with others on the network has not been an issue as it seems to be in Toronto and other cities with Rogers@Home. After reading and seeing the grief that many others are put through with Sympatico ( I used to be a dial-up subscriber with them) I would never go back.

Re: Videotron?

Hmmmmm...I wrote this review and for ISP I picked none (the only option it showed for cable) and then typed in RoadRunner(TWC). Strange. I can only assume it must be some sort of glitch in the system since I have no idea who/what Videotron is either!

Re: Videotron?

FYI- Videotron is a cable TV provider(3rd largest in Canada) that serves the province of Quebec, eg - Montreal,Quebec City. It is also a cable and dial-up ISP. The company is also dabbling in IP Telephony over it's cable modems and is scheduled to offer local phone service(in direct competition to our Bell telco monopoly) later this fall. And don't forget that per capita, more Canadians have opted for broadband service than users in the excited states !

Yea that with the upload and downloaded it is really pathetic but now I hear that you can't go over 16 K. upstream I thought it would be something like 100 K. like it is with Rogers @home in Toronto. is there no way to somehow take that cap off.

In regards to the modem there are two technologies. technology number 2 and number 3. The technology number 2 uses the Motorola modem, technology number three use of this Samsung modem. Now in the U.S. in some states at RadioShack they have a deal selling a digital modem cable modem for $99 plus you get the gift certificate for $100. So theoretically the modem is free. And that modem supposedly works for technology 3. That would save you $10 per month because you wouldn't have to rent the modem.

VIDEOTRON VERY CHEAP IN BOTH WAYS

VIDETRON IS THE CHEAPEST THERE IS SO DONT WIIIIINE 39.00CAD THAT 25.00 U.S.D FIND ONE CHEAPER THAN THAT

They CAN NOW read ALL MODEM

JUST be awar they CAN NOW READ all modem including SamSUNG and Scientific atlanta!

yeah they now can read samsung

and there caps suck but like they say ITS cheap

even at 60$canadian for a 10/10gig down/up with a 500kdown and 640 kbits up its perty good if you ask me!!!

yeah the recent sabotage and shit the tech guys have done is crapy...

i live in a small town, weve had high speed cable for about 5 monhts! ive use the tech often, due to our cable lines behing crapy, there tech guys are not the brightest, i know more about thech support and internet then they do, but atless the ones i got actuly tried to help me out, but they are good when it comes to the hardware(there stuff, servers and lines), and did a good job at fixing my lines, and there hardware here in town!!! at the start ive had several connection problems but now its good, no problems what so ever unless they sabotage the system!

i have the regular packedge right now, and i hit the caps veryoften! i hit up to 375k/s download(they say 350 down) and 14k/s up(they say 16k/s) so to me they are perty good in dilivering what they say...

now i just pray that freaking ftps, and other peoples servers could send me data at 350k sec! hehe(even with that bandwith you can still dl at 100k often cause other poeples servers are slow!)

right now am calling to get the extrem pack with will give me 10gigs up and down, cause in 2 weeks i do 5.5gigs of trans in average, and theres still 2 weeks left in the month!!! ouch!

and in the next commings months there gona start charging us people with samsungs and scientific Atlanta modems this is sad!

anywho there the best up here in quebec! for the price comperaded to our neibors in the US and in Ontario its perty dam good price!
