The Internet speed is good and the connection is reliable
The technical support is terrible
If you don't run into technical or billing problems, Videotron is great.

Since March 2007, I have terminated my subscription with Videotron. The service was great, the Internet access was great but they keep increasing their monthly fee every year. This time around I said enough. Why would I pay 57$/month if I can get a 20$/month service on DSL? Ok, throughput could be an answer. In the end, I was getting a throughput of 6.5Mbps/700Kbps with them which was great. With the DSL provider I now use, I only get 2.5Mbps/700Kbps (that's because I live in the country).

The truth is I wanted to try something else. With 37$/month saving, I think it is worth it. In a year from now, nothing prevent me from switching back if I'm not happy.

You may read my review on the other ISP I am using. Meanwhile, I have chosen to keep my original Videotron review after updating the monthly fee.

========== ORIGINAL REVIEW ==========

Over the past 9 months, Videotron has provided me with excellent throughput. The upload speed even got upgraded from 180Kbps to 350Kbps with no extra charge. I am living in the country, using a Linksys router and am very pleased with my Internet access. Videotron currently provides me high speed Internet (3100kbps downstream and 350Kbps upstream) through dynamic IP cable modem.

I had a few glitches with their customer support which got finally resolved at the beginning of Summer 2003. Their technical support seems to have improved since the begging of the Summer as I tried contacting them miscellaneous information which they provided me with. They no longer hang up if I mention I am using a router which is a good thing.

The only real technical issues I got with them is with their email servers. In some occasions, the email arrival or departure could be delayed up to 24h or worst sometimes simply losing them. Thankfully, this did not happened too regularly so I guess I can live with it.

Bottom line, the actual internet solution is great, the technical support is in improvement stage, the customer service (for billing for example) is nice. My statement is if you are knowledgable about networking (thus don't need too much technical support) and you are willing to follow closely your Internet bills, then Videotron provides a very good solution.

WOW

I think you forgot to mention the following :

1) EXPENSIVE AS F*** !
2) Unlimited is a total ripoff and only available as an even more expensive bussiness tier.
3) Upload speeds are pathetic

Videotron is the best .

Why unlimited ??? I download all what i want every month and i never pass the 20g/10g cap . I buy my games because when i play i allwais play online , i rent my movie ( 1$ for 24/h !! ) and i buy my music(between 1$ ans 2$ each on internet)

If you need unlimited cap and you not work for a big company you r just a nerd's without life . Seriously say me why you need over 100g combined per month ???? Don't cry if the people who have create game , movie and music try to stop all illegal download of their work . Do you work for free ???? Not me .

Re: Videotron is the best .

Does it matter if you need it or not ? Not realy... The basic fact that i would have to pay 90$ for unlimited access when i can get unlimited elsewhere for 40$ says it all.

Or 29.95$ for 200GB cap instead of 30GB cap for 40$ simply says that videotron is ripping off it's customers.

30GB can easily be busted when you have 2 kids, 3 computers, wifi capable cell phones etc...

So Long videotron.

I have been with them for a long time, but I been frustrated with them lately. Whenever I try to download anything using bit torrent after 6pm on a weekday my cable modem gets temporarily disabled by them. I am sure they alseodo some throttling with their bandwith.

They also charge 3 taxes for their service. In Quebec they have an extra 7.5 communications tax.

My friends are with a DSL provider that offers 200GB with good service and only pay the GST on it. So I will be saving $10 a month too.

Re: So Long videotron.

They dont charge 3 tax, they juste separate TVQ from different service.... lamer,

if you do the total, you got 14%

They don't do any throttling. You should call tech support and complain about this. They will most likely send a tech to exchange your modem for free.

Well, I don't mind paying 10-20$ more / month to get a reliable and fast Internet Connection. So the price/quotas is not a big deal for me.

I get 5MB ADSL with 200gb cap for half the price... So slow adsl is kind of not the case for everyone !

Re: Realy ?

Do you really need 200gb? I rarely go over 20gb and I think the price is fine with what I get. Now, can I review the ISP as I want and not being obligated to comment my choice? Kaythxbye.

Re: Pardon me

To put everything in a nutshell:

-The technician that came to install everything did an outstanding job!

-The service is great and almost flawless and technical support, when they can, give detailled information when an outage is happening.

-Service in my area is constantly upgrading, VoIP is now accessible and HD channel list is getting upgraded soon.

Since i have videotron (few year), all is working perfectly, never have any issue with tech support.. now, have TV and Phone with them and no bad word to say.. only good thing! For sure, the price for the Internet is a little high, but, its ok.

I had some problem recently.. I can say that Tech support and the tech who came to my home are #1!! For sure, we have some bad experience sometime, but that case was good!

I wasn't really happy with Sympatico's cost (44.95/mo) and technical support for their High-Speed service, so I called Videotron and after a long wait (14 days), since I called around Jul 1st, I got the visit from their technician. He went straight to the point, got my connection set up (although wouldn't touch my router) and left. I was pleasantly surprised to see that my connection speed was higher than with Sympatico. Downloading large attachments from gmail now goes @ 600-700 kbytes/sec. BTW last week I noticed a slow down on what I thought it was their line and decided to call them. The technician I spoke to was very knowledgeable and after a few tests and no more than 5 minutes on the phone, he was able to verify that everything was ok on their side (while giving me credible and detailed information about the tests that he run from there) and the issue had to be between the modem and my PC. I did then a few tests on my own and found that my Netgear wireless router was the cause. From past experience this wouldn't have been as easy and quick to diagnose with Sympatico. Great support!

Also you have to sign for the contract if you want to get it cheaper :\
