After two weeks and two technicians who didn't have the necessary tool to install (fiche to pass cable underground) I personally rented one myself and called them over. They were all polite and installation took an hour for the Duo Plan (High Speed and Telephone).

Videotron is the only broadband provider in my area. Strangely Bell calls me every month to sign up DSL followed by an apology explaining it's not available. I knew the unreasonable bandwidth restrictions and exorbitant surcharge fees before signing up but I had no choice.

The telephone service is just as good and Bell. Be prepared to get a dozen sob cards, letters, rate matching, phone calls begging to switch back.

2008-Today: Switched to Videotron Business. No wait time for support, same speed without caps, a bit pricey but well worth it. Especially if you take the cheaper Business Duo Package (Basic Internet + Telephone) for 67$ per month.

Nothing negative?

Just the low download limit and the high prices are two major negative points from Videotron.

So if you work there, why don't you give us a good price?

Never lost my connection since the 2 last years. The price is not so bad (120$ for TV, Internet, Phone)

I was with a bell MVNO for my internet 2 years ago and I was always losing my connection, I had less tv channels and no LD on the phone for at a higher price.
--
I have a bundled package which is kinda great.
Internet Intermediate ; something like 1Mb/s (which is in reality 700-800ko/s) and I can download/upload up to 15 Gigabytes a month.
Landline Phone : Long Distance all over the province of Quebec.
TV : I've got something like 30 channels (which is enough for me)
Price : $120 / month

Never had to call technical support, never lost my connection.

Reliable, advertised speeds, simple setup, student rates
Very low download caps, poor overall value, contracts, poor self-serve website
Reliable service, poor value

I ordered the student high-speed internet package (7.5Mbps/820kbps) in September. Installer attempted to activate a current cable modem I had bought from another provider but apparently this isn't possible - you are forced to rent a modem from Videotron (there is no option to buy a modem and save on your monthly bill like several other cable providers). They also charged $40 for installation (no new cables/jacks needed to be installed, just a new modem plugged in). I was shocked when I received the first bill and discovered they were charging for TV cable despite making a point to tell them we don't want TV cable. They resolved this by adding a credit to my account.

The internet service is very reliable and the speeds are as advertised, which is important to me since I use my internet connection for school research, work, and voip. This is the only positive thing I have to say about Videotron and the main reason why I chose them over their DSL competitors.

The biggest downside I have found is the very outdated and low data caps. No other Canadian ISPs I am aware of offer such a low (30GB combined/month) usage cap for similar speed service and charge so much ($7.95/GB) if you exceed the cap. At least they give you the option to add an additional 30GB 'data package' but still at a steep cost of $12.50/month. And then the only way to activate or deactivate this 'data package' is to phone them (why can't I do this from the customer web site?). So each month that I end up nearing the 30GB limit, I need to call support and request and additional 30GB, which is in effect for a minimum of 30 days. So even if you stay under 30GB the following month, they will charge you again for the extra data anyway since it isn't possible to cancel for the following month. Then I need to remember to call them back a minimum of 30 days later to deactivate the extra data package, or they will keep charging for it whether I use it or not.

Since I often exceed 30GB in a month, which isn't hard to do, I enquired about upgrading my service to Ultimate 30 which allows a more reasonable 100GB monthly cap. I was willing to pay the difference between my current student rate for high speed and Ultimate 30, but they would take away my student discount and make me pay full price if I went ahead with the upgraded plan. My previous ISP, Shaw, does allow you to upgrade to higher speed services and keep the same student savings (just paying the difference) which makes a lot more sense - they make more money and I get to pick the higher level package I want.

After using Shaw in the west for many years, I really feel like my options with Videotron are very limited in comparison. Videotron offers similar good reliability and consistant speeds as other national cable providers, but when you look at what the others are offering and compare prices, contracts, data caps, included extras (like security software, speed boost), option to purchase your own equipment, installation charges, etc. it is obvious that Videotron does not offer very good value. I guess as the only cable company in the region they are getting away with these charges now, but unless they become more competitive in the near future, I will definitely be looking for any alternative once my contract with them is up.

I like my 7.5mbps connection, but the 30gig a month is bugging me. I watch alot of streaming (legal) and I must take care not to bust my limit.

I don't mind switching to Teksavvy to have 2mbps lower, but 200gig instead, for less.

What is this teksavvy that you speak of? It is any cheaper? I often find that I rarely get the 7.5mb/s download speed because websites simply don't have the bandwidth so I wouldn't mind 2mb/s slower.

Re: teksavvy

teksavvy.com
or check in this website Forum, in the Canada section.
They are Toronto based, but offer service in Montreal.

It's a 5mbps/800kpbs service. no contract
200gig CAP or Unlimitted
4$ extra for MLPPP (bypass Bell throttling of Torrents)

if you don't have a phone line with bell at home, then add about 9.10$ for the Dry Line to use the DSL with.

I'm currently shopping for a good modem, and once I have it, im ordering teksavvy for a month, see how it is, then cancel Videotron if I'm satisfied.
