Well, I'm making the switch to Video-Tron. All I can say is... Quebec blows. Shitty business propositions, everything is WAY too expensive (mainly food... and taxes, seriously QC, get it together) and everything here (80-90%) is made out of brick, minus the office buildings downtown (wtf?). The problem I have here is that you HAVE to be on a contract to get $10 off, plus bundle pricing. I don't have a problem with bundles, bundles are good. That's smart advertising. Contracts are a trap. I could go to Alberta today and get extreme high speed internet (same as video tron's extreme) for $53 as a standalone price, NO contract. Sounds good . wait... 15MBPS? :O... and 100GB/month transfers which i could live with, but is kinda low for 15MBPS... oh shit... if i bundle it, it goes down to $45/month... wow!... I wish it was that easy to move back... I don't know why tf I moved out here in the first place. Right now, video tron is the best service since I sometimes need to work from home which I require having a stable internet solution and I can't screw around with "testing" other services. I'm getting $150 off an HD receiver and I have to put a $200 deposit down for the modem, but I don't mind since it's being put towards my bill as credit and I won't have to pay for internet for 3months because technically, its already paid for. No option to BUY the modem that I can see, to take the $5/mo rental off the price, which once again, I would be able to in Alberta, and would bring the price down, yet again, to $40/month. With the HD package and more channels than I'm going to be getting, a dedicated IP Phone service, NOT hooked up to the same internet that the computer is hooked up to, but having its OWN modem hooked up to the phone line so if your INTERNET service goes down, at least you still have PHONE service. Call anywhere in US and CANADA unlimited, all calling features and voicemail. All this comes up to the same price, or rather only a few dollars more, than what I'm about to be paying with video tron. A good note on all the bad stuff. Talking to customer service was a pleasant surprise, no Indian accent Not that I'm racist or discriminatory, but I prefer a company that supports its own country with jobs from a company that's in Canada, not like Bell where all OUR jobs should be in Canada are now being outsourced to India. There are LOTS of people in CANADA that need jobs too. Let INDIA support INDIANS. The reason I seriously hate this shit is because they try to tell you they are passing the savings on to ME... and YOU... but really its millions more in their own pockets. Since I have not used Video Trons services yet, I do not know about traffic shaping, which I really haven't looked for any information on yet and since I haven't paid for it yet, I can still change my mind after I do look for something. My main reason for switching is because I can get better service for $20 cheaper, BUT... I'm on a contract which I absolutely HATE. Wish I could find something better for a better price, but like I always say when I find something screwy about this province, "That's Quebec for ya".

    uh

What is the 5$/month rental fee you're talking about? There isn't any traffic shaping of any sort and it's spelled Videotron.

    Re: uh

Wether you like it or not, you're paying for the modem every month, they just don't tell you that at "Videotron". In Calgary at least, you could buy the modem and cut another $5 from the bill. You're just screwed if the modem breaks after warranty. You're paying for it to get replaced for free (but actually costs $5/month) and basically costs you more money in the long run to rent it, depending how long it takes you to break things. My main point here is that you're paying $25 more here, for less service than I would get if I was still out west, where I would be right now if it was just that easy to move back.

Of course you are. What do you expect from a company? Getting it for free? They are there to make money! Want a free return ticket?

    Re: uh

I don't expect anything for free, but I expect a FAIR price, not a rip off from yet another french company. I would take you up on that offer, but like I said, its not that easy. Besides, I can afford my own ticket outta here. Would be nice to be back with better pay, better people, better business...

So basically what you're telling me is they are ripping me off no matter what i do and there is no possible way to get a better price. This is pretty typical of almost every local business I've had to deal with in QC. You mention the word "deal" and right away its a "NO".

    My girl freinds internet service.

This is their High Speed service at 7.5mbps

The speed is good ans always at 7.5mbps

the instalation was great. she choosed Cable internet because they wanted TV service and was sick of Bell Canada.

They are really expensive and since that I discovered solutionbetter from independant ISP but they keep videotron for the cable TV.

The only problem we had from them is that they seem to never informe customer when a cheaper solution is available from them when we ask for. We had to go to their website to see that we could buy 30go more bandwitdh per month at 12$ instead of paying max overcharge of 50$. They never proposed this to us enven if we asked for a less expensive solution then paying 50$ more.

Ok, well Videotron is most reliable than Bell in my area so I was not having the choice. I can get full speed at anytime of the day (7.5 mbits). Why do I need to have cable tv to get a 10 $ rebate ? You cannot get a good price if you don't take the one year contract with cable tv. I've been using IHV since now 6 years and I cannot say that the service is too bad. One negative point is that Vidéotron is always increasing the price without any upgrade of downloads / uploads limits. I'm not an heavy user of the Internet but 30 gig per month is not realist for the Internet of today.

I have nothing to say about home phone. Reliable and works perfectly.

totally agree. I'm subscribed to their "High Speed" paackage and limited to 20GB/mo until my contract renews and pass to their "upagraded" 30GB/mo. I constantly have to monitor my bandwidth consumption on their site....

    My Other Reviews·Bell Sympatico

I have high speed internet package on a monthly basis with videotron ISP.I have been on this package since August of 1999.The download limits have not changed as far as I can remember(20GB download,10GB upload and now 30GB combined+$8/GB if over the limit to $50 max/month) even though the internet has changed since 1999!The price has not come down either.I am paying about the same as 1999 + a few dollars.

I think I am going to switch to acanac ISP(acanac.com).For about $240 per year(all taxes included) for a one year contract + $50 for a DSL modem(download speed 5mbps,upload speed 800kbps)and UNLIMITED download and upload limit.Available in my area(Montreal).Acanac automatically renews your contract after the first year and at a higher rate of about $35/month unless you give them one month notice to not renew and not charge your credit card.It is all in the user agreement.

    My experience with Acanac

Let me tell you my experience with ACANAC -

This Feb23th i gave my notice of non-renewal to Videotron so I could shop around for a better deal -- this after 14 years with Videotron on the Extreme Tier !

I did go to all the trouble of getting a Dry Line and a DSL Modem in order to hook up ACANAC DSL. Paid my $227.40 + $96 for the dry line = $323.40 + 54.72 for a modem.

I was connected on Mar 15th and started to use it just like I was using it Videotron. Didn't change my habits , just my routinely surfing , streaming,a bit of gaming and the odd P2P download.

First shock was the unstable speed both in Download and Upload -- Tests were varying by as much as a few 1000's slower -- then the "**good" DSL speed of 6000/615 . It would create havoc with downloads ! **I am one of the lucky one, located less then 1.2Km from Bell Remote; if you stretch this to a few kilometers , you will rarely achieve more then 3500/500 speeds.

Streaming videos or music became a pain... stuttering , breakups...! Useless 50% of the time. Gaming was of the same caliber...!

Then at 4pm sharp till 2am, each day --- the P2P downloads were jammed at 30Kb/s --- That is the throttling on all DSL connections imposed by Bell Canada . Nothing you can do less you use a Tunnelier , and even then you will get frequent disconnects : you'll have to sit in front of that PC to re-login each time it disconnects !

After 10 days of this nighmarish situation , I figured that i would rather pay an extra $25 a month and have something I could live with ! I renewed my Videotron Account .... and got a Refund from ACANAC. Never again on "cheap" DSL , I'll wait for the 2012 version !

Acanac is a good company , they try their best and I must say they do live up to their Refund Policy within the first 30 days. There was no hardship in getting it.

You may be satisfied with DSL , so do as you wish , but :-

Dont forget ... ""The grass may look greener on the other side of the fence but maybe it ai'nt GRASS ""

    Cheers !

    Re: My experience with Acanac

On Thursday before the Easter weekend of 2009 I applied on line and paid for a one yearcontract of acanac dsl service for $18.50 per month INCLUDING TAX and UNLIMITED Download and upload plus $50 for their modem.I received the modem by Fedex on Monday and by Tuesday could connect to the internet and within a week had reached my current speeds of average 3.5 Mbps download and 0.6Mbps upload.Customer service response was very fast, friendly and helpful and has been up to now.
For ten years I had Videotron high speed internet with 30 Gb download+upload per month with gigabytes over the monthly limit charged at $8/G with a max of $50 extra per month.I paid after the $10 discount for Tv subscribers about $60/month including tax.
Today it is about one and half months that I have acanac dsl and so far have been very satisfied and very happy not to have to pay Videotron for their overpriced and over complicated packages for internet. My speeds are roughly half of what they were with Videotron but I pay about A THIRD of what I used to pay.
That is why I strongly recommend switching from videotron to Acanac!

    Re: My experience with Acanac

You forgot to mention a few things !!

Service with Acanac is during business hours ONLY -- none on weekends -- and it's done via email. Let's hope your connection does not go sour on a friday -- you'll have to wait till Monday, my friend.

Acanac is a reseller of bandwidth -- you must deal with BELL yourself if the connection is at fault. Acanac cannot do anything for you but pass the buck to BELL.

Your download speed becomes less then 30kb/s from 4pm. till 2am every day due to Bell throttling. If you use BitVise Tunnelier , or any other program to get around the throttling , you may get a hefty penalty from Bell Canada.

Presently Bell Canada is in front of the CRTC to cap all resellers to 60GB - you may get a shock on your unlimited downloads comes this June.

Second year servive with ACANAC is $404.70 in advance debited to your credit card. - And make sure you send them a notification 30 days in advance if you want to cancel -- cause they wont remind you your contract is near the end.

One big flaw --- seeing you are on VIDEOTRON's Forum --- Videotron is a Québec company , where FRENCH is the official language , ACANAC does not offer ANY FRENCH speaking personnel -- they operate from Toronto. So unless you are perfectly bilingual, you are gonna hit a wall with ACANAC.

Good luck with your gaming , your video streaming (Youtube), your P2P downloading ect....ect... comes 4PM -- unless you are a night person and you feel like waiting till 2AM. --

Perhaps ACANAC is not so hot after all for people in Quebec , maybe you should make your recommendation on a Toronto ISP Forum -- it would be much more relevant.

    Have a great day !

" Service with acanac is during business hours ONLY"

Not true. We offer email support 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Phone support is offered from 9AM to 12AM Monday through Friday.

"-- none on weekends -- and it's done via email. Let's hope your connection does not go sour on a friday -- you'll have to wait till Monday, my friend."

Email support is offered on the weekends.

"acanac is a reseller of bandwidth -- you must deal with BELL yourself if the connection is at fault. acanac cannot do anything for you but pass the buck to BELL."

Although we do depend on Bell for the last mile of service we have our own bandwidth carries. We do not reseller Bell's bandwidth.

"Your download speed becomes less then 30kb/s from 4pm. till 2am every day due to Bell throttling. If you use BitVise Tunnelier , or any other program to get around the throttling , you may get a hefty penalty from Bell Canada."

What penalty are you referring too? Never heard of such a thing and this service has been offered for nearly 1 year. Remember your not a Bell client your an Acanac client.

"Presently Bell Canada is in front of the CRTC to cap all resellers to 60GB - you may get a shock on your unlimited downloads comes this June."

No decision will be made at least until July. In either case we will do our best to protect current and future clients.

"Second year servive with acanac is $404.70 in advance debited to your credit card. - And make sure you send them a notification 30 days in advance if you want to cancel -- cause they wont remind you your contract is near the end."

Clients can also pay on 1, 3, 6 and 12 month terms. The higher the term the lower the rate.

"One big flaw --- seeing you are on VIDEOTRON's Forum --- Videotron is a Québec company , where FRENCH is the official language , acanac does not offer ANY FRENCH speaking personnel -- they operate from Toronto. So unless you are perfectly bilingual, you are gonna hit a wall with acanac."

Not true. We do have a few French speaking representatives. More will be added over time.

"Good luck with your gaming , your video streaming (Youtube), your P2P downloading ect....ect... comes 4PM -- unless you are a night person and you feel like waiting till 2AM. --"

Come 4PM you should not notice and difference as long as you use our workarounds. You also have a 30 day money back period to try out the service for yourself. I am not asking for any blind faith. Try it for your self and if we can not meet your needs please just request a full refund within the first 30 days.

    Re: My experience with Acanac

Thanks for the two reply posts.Since my subscription to Acanac from the 9th of April 2009,and having had one month of getting a full refund,I can report that I am essentially satisfied with their service so far.If I encounter problems in the future I will try to mention them here.
I have not so far experienced the most serious potential problem mentioned, that of 30kbps in prime time evenings and throttling etc.As I wrote in my first post my download and upload speeds have been stable.
As for the caps being reduced in the future,I believe that the one year contract of unlimited caps has to be honoured till the end of the term by Acanac and that they can not in the middle of the term suddenly change to limited caps.
Thinking about Videotron and Acanac I am reminded of staying at hotels with different star ratings. If Videotron is a five star then Acanac is a three or two star but you get a descent, clean room and can sleep the night for a third of the price and should not expect the little luxuries(such as telephone support in the middle of the night or 7mbp/s downloads or mints on your bed before retiring.)

    My Other Reviews·Acanac
I started out with a package 10-1Mb/s including unlimited usage. This package was 75$ if I remember correctly and had a 12 month contract. During the contract period Videotron changed from unlimited usage to a 100GB monthly cap and 1.5$ per extra gigabyte with no limit on the additional charges. They did not offer me to change my contract even though they changed the terms. At the end of the 12 month period I changed to the 7.5Mb/s service, which has cap of 30GByte per month but also has a cap on the additional charges of 50$. I also signed up for a 12 month extension for this contract, which gives a 10$ discount.

This year I decided to try something else since I find the Videotron a bit too expensive so I called to cancelled the service. They told me that it would be a 30 day waiting period and 120$ charge for cancelling since they had automatically renewed my contract for another 12 months. This was apparently something they had changed during the year and I would have to cancel a month before my 12 month period expires to avoid the extension. I accepted this after some complaining and cancelled. 2 months later I see on my credit card that they are still charging my for the service, even though they charged me the cancellation fee. Calling to complain they tell me it is because I haven't returned my modem and that I will be refunded when I do. Fine even though I wasn't told to return it before it makes sense and return it and expect to see my money but of course they will not refund me the money, it is just that they will stop charging me from the point the modem is returned. Calling to complain and asking to talk to a manager they just hang up on me. I have given up on Videtron completely and I warn everybody to stay away if they can.

Another example of their lousy customer service is when they came to install my service and didn’t bring the cable tv box I had order. Instead of installing the Internet and tv and sending me the correct box I had to refuse the installation and reorder everything which made it take a week extra and I had to stay home from work a day extra to wait for them.

Its too bad there's no other cable companies that are offering a similar service. The main problem is that they are the only one. So you have to deal by yourself with problems like a bad connection during around 5 or 6 days per month. For example ( this is for Extreme High Speed - 10MB download - 1MB upload ):

    Dn:8652 Kbps Up:165 Kbps testvitesse.videotron.ca
Dn:8831 Kbps Up:348 Kbps TekSavvy Solutions Inc (Toronto ON)
    Dn:9333 Kbps Up:194 Kbps testvitesse.videotron.ca
    Dn:9333 Kbps Up:330 Kbps testvitesse.videotron.ca
Dn:7610 Kbps Up:338 Kbps TekSavvy Solutions Inc (Toronto ON)
    Dn:8865 Kbps Up:181 Kbps testvitesse.videotron.ca

See all the spped differences for each off those days? This is what I mean when I said it got a very bad connectivity. Have you ever tried to upload a 30MB file to your FTP with that speed? It is uploading at ± 6KB... it takes hours....

About the service, all they will answer you is that they will send a technician, for 75$ to check the wires and the modem. But the problem is on their side!!! Why I say that? Because the rest of the month everything is ok. Like:

    Dn:9210 Kbps Up:824 Kbps testvitesse.videotron.ca

This issue always happen around the 10th of each month. The rest of the month I have nothing to say. Connectivity is ok.

    Overall rate: 5/10

    Wow poor you.

Is it for sure 75$ just to get a tech out to find a problem?

Or is it 75$ if the problem is your end?

As far as I'm concerned the cabling outside the house and upto the modem is their problem.

    Did you bitch at them?

    Re: interesting

    Hi,

I don't think wires or anything here are involved in the problems.

If I make a tracert to videotron, it shows servers high pinging in the route. So the problem is on their side, servers in the route that don't make the job. Anyway the problem appears like for 4 - 5 days around the 10th to the 15th of each month, each month. I really doubt the wires or even the modem decide to go bad only during this period.

About bitching them its not really my "style" No matter what you'll say to them, they are the only ones providing cable connection. So we really have no choices with them.

Thanks for your comment, really appreciated.

    good point

About bitching them its not really my "style" No matter what you'll say to them, they are the only ones providing cable connection. So we really have no choices with them.

True. When you're a monopoly they can pretty much tell you, and everyone you love, where to go

I considered Bell, but it's unreliable, not that fast, high latency but higher cap. It's still quite expensive.

I use Internet High Speed at 41$ per month when packaged with 12 month contract and TV and Phone line. If not packaged at all, it's 61$.
cap : 20 GB down 10 GB up
speed : 7 mbps down 800 kbps up.

Videotron package deal is easy to use and when packaged, cost start to make sense a little bit.

Order and install process was fine. The experience is good, if you can swallow the high price.

Contract price not specified.

"stable but expensive and limited ... good to start if the availability is the most important thing for you."

First, I can't really speak about the price because it's include in my apt rent and I can download without limit because it's specified in my rent contract.

So, for now, I'm happy with my 10 Mb/s cable connection, but I would prefer a fully unlimited 20+Mb/s and with unlimited download (what I had in France before moving to Montreal).

I'll certainly not choose Videotron for my Internet connection when I'll move in my next apt.

    videotron sucks

Does any one know of any company who changes your account/bill without your authorization? well, videotron does! And twice! even after I put a password on it!
Here is part of the story.
1st, they told me any one who wants videotron service has to have a contract of 3 years. When i complained, they gave me a promotion, and reduced it to 1 year. 2nd, when i finally put my foot down and called to disconnect the service
(they billed me ~$140 / month for phone and high speed internet), I told them that I shouldn't be paying 120$ for disconnecting since I have been with videotron for over 1 year now. I thought this was all done and over, but no, they called me the next day saying that I have to call them back ... 3rd, when i got my bill they somehow changed my bill, and still was able to charge me 120$ extra totaling 320$!

I mean how is this possible?! why would anyone trust this company ever?!
