The flash test to L.A. crashed over 5Mb (looks to be a flash issue 11.2-r202)

Supposed to have 10Mb speeds and have been notified that by mid year, we'll be bumped to 15Mb (June/July).

They have not permanently fixed the dropped connection issue - it's a bad cable that needs replacing and the only thing done was to replace a couple of splitters and install an amp. Part of the problem is line degradation (it's been up for over 10 years - decade) and needs to be replaced. Could also be a node issue as it's only the internet and voip that drops. TV stays up.

It's the voip drops that are of real concern as this is our primary phone line - Had switched to TWC Voip due to a bad landline (verizon did a temporary replacement after the line shorted out and called 911 while officer was there in response to earlier call). That was over 7 years ago and Verizon has never replaced the temp line with a buried one.

Signal Levels

Check your modem signal levels and see if it could possibly be a line noise issue. I had the same problem for the longest time with TWC, ended up being a line issue inside my house. Guy came out, replaced all the wiring and it worked perfect after that.

May need a spectrum analyzer

If you can get access to a spectrum analyzer you can check the cable for signal level and noise. One problem I had with Mediacom was the signal level was very low and there was so much noise on the line that it almost completely swamped out the signal. They had some nice equipment but nobody who seemed to know how to use it. I showed the cable guy the problem on my own analyzer and got them to turn up the signal level which helped for a few days but then it went back to not working again. One problem with cable is that if you have a white trash trailer park down the street they have probably tapped into the cable illegally which interferes with your signal. Everytime the cable guy from Mediacom came out to my house they were always saying they had to remove illegal connections down the street!

There's no question that in The State of Hawaii RoadRunner (Oceanic Cable) is the go to ISP. The cost is higher than the DSL competitor, but it's worth the extra expense when you compare the level of service offered. The choice is a no brainer when the dismal CS offered by the DSL competitor is factored in. I won't mention them by name because whenever I do my office suffers mysterious phone outrages.

Upgraded to "turbo" wish I done it sooner.

Time Warner took over my area from Adelphia
My Adelphia reviews----- »/comment/45012
It was not a smooth transition.
The night of transition, I lost connection and it was off for 2 days. When it came back my speeds dropped horribly in the evening. Page transitions sucked and it looked like I might not get it fixed.
Thankfully a dedicated tech helped to track the problem and helped to get things right. Now my speeds are rock steady no matter the time of day. Just as it was with Adelphia.
At first I thought it was going to suck being moved to Time Warner. But now the bugs are out of the system and I am allot happier.
--------Update 10/01/07
Since the first "glitch" I wrote about during the transition. Time Warner service has been stable and very reliable. There have been very very few outages for any reason. My TV has been stable, and my internet to, including the speeds.
So, I have to report. I am very very happy with Time Warner.

Update: 10/21/2007
There isn't much to update. I still have TW cable after it took over Adelphia in my area. As I reported before, I am VERY happy with the service. It continues to add services, (Such as digital phone) and some HD channels since Adelphia.
Customer Support is great and I am happy with TWs service.

Update: 4/26.2008

I was aksed to update my review so here I am.
Time Warner now also offers digital phone, but I don't use that service here. It seems like they are keeping up with maintance and problems and offering newer services.
I am still happy with the service.
I can't say anything about customer service as I havne't had to use it much. The couple times I have, was to make changes and it went smooth.

Update 10/28/2008

Once again. BBR wants me to review my ISP.
I can't say anything bad about it. It gives constant speeds, and customer service has always treated me well. No long waits and prompt service.

Update 4/30/2009

"System" requested an updated review from me. So here is, though there isn't anything to report.

Service is rock steady. Not much down time to speak of. The very few I've had, lasted minutes, to a couple hours at most.
Speeds... I have the "turbo" plan (15dn/1up) and that too is very steady.
The few times I've called support was for TV reasons. That is a little flakey at times (especially the HD channels) , and I am very disappointed about the HD channel offerings. By now I would thing we would have more then we do...
_______
Update 12/4/1010

It seems it has been awhile since I updated my review. I've been ignoring this sights request for me to update, but there isn't much to update about. But I am gong to today to keep the nag away!
My connection is always stable, very few down times. And if there are any, it is very short lived. Even after major storms knocking out power, my UPS kicks on with the modem and internet still going. (At least until the battery goes dead!)

I do think the pricing is high, but I don't care. It is this, or back to DirecWay (Now HughesNet) and I am not going there again! That said, This last month I've seen my phone company running new wires on my street. I asked what it was about, and they said it was so they can deliver DSL..... As I am literally across the street from the (whatever they call that box) I am told I can expect "very fast speeds" if I switch.
I don't know when they expect to go online with this, but I will keep a watchful eye and see about it when it does.

Edit 8/2012
-----------------

"System" want me to review Road Runner, again. But there isn't much to add other then what has already been said.
Time Warner is a stable and reliable service. I don't have TV with them any more (TOO EXPENSIVE) so I have Internet and Phone only.
Time Warner has upgraded to Docsis 3, and as a result, my 20/2 speeds are rock steady. Most of the time I get much faster then the provisioned rate thanks to "turbo boost"
--------------------
edit 3/2013

Time Warner is pretty much my only option. However, Fairpoint upgraded the "box" at the end of my driveway for DSL. Because it is so close, I can get their best speed, 15/1. However, I'd also have to get a phone line with it, so it become cost prohibitive. I am enjoying flawless service from Time Warner with their 30/5 service. I never have a problem with speeds and rarely have any down time. I like the service but the cost... no so much. I dropped TV service because it got too expensive.

I switched from WOW in March. TWC offered a bundle with cable, internet, and voip.
Aside from a minor install problem (which was corrected the next day) everything went well. The turbo speed (15Mb down) is great. I only have 768K up but I really don't upload much so for me its not an issue. So far, so good.

Jan 2009 ISP has been very consistent with speeds. Aside from the usual slowdowns at peak times, and even these are not really a problem. At this point I am very happy with Roadrunner.

Sep 2009 Nothing has changed since Jan. A couple of outages due to weather but thats about it. The usual slowdown with cable at peak times but acceptable.
Just wish RR would increase the upload speed, 768 Sucks.

Mar 2010 Everything is still the same here. Speeds have been consistent and where they are supposed to be. Upload still sucks though.

Jan 2011 Nothing new to report. A few times the cable went out but was corrected in a reasonable amount of time. Speeds remain consistent with the occasional holiday slowdowns. Still stuck with the 768 upload, hopefully that will be changed sometime soon.

Oct 2012 RR increased their upload speed from 768 to 1000 a few months back. Better but still slow. In Dec I am getting the 50/5 package...looking forward to that.

Mar 2013 Finally got the 50/5 package. Only had it for a couple of days, but so far it is solid.
What a difference from the 15/1 package. It costs $30 more per month than the standard 15/1 package which brings it up to $59 per month with the TV and Phone bundle.

Road runner was the only option in the new complex where I moved to, beside AT&T dsl which topped out at 3meg at our location would not be fast enough to stream multiple Netflix videos. Uverse is available everywhere around our complex along with WOW, but the apartment complex management must be in cahoots with TWC to only allow them to provide cable service in the entire apartment complex. Wish I could get WOW or Uverse at least the connection didn't drop 2-3 times a day.

Update 6/3
On the 16th of May I upgraded to the Extreme tier and paying the same price as turbo.

Update 3/24/12
Moved to new address downgraded to the Standard Tier 10/1. We always get the advertised speeds along with the Power Boost.

Update 11/10/12
Upgraded to the new "Ultimate" tier which is the 50Mbps service since work pays for it. Consistently get the full 50Mbps down and 5Mbps up, though I wish some provider in Columbus would have a better package than 50Mbps.

My Other Reviews

·Fairpoint Commun..
*Update*

My roommates have Roadrunner Lite which is terribly slow. Constant buffering is unacceptable. The speeds are supposed to be 1Mbps/1Mbps, but I consistently get 1.02Mbps/0.97Mbps. The roommates were unwilling to upgrade even though I said I'd pay for the extra service but they declined. So, I got my own service from Fairpoint. The Roadrunner connection is stable and they get what they are paying for, but it's to ridiculously slow for me. Their speed = 1.02Mbps/0.97Mbps; My speed = 7.1Mbps/1.04Mbps. I like my new service as there is no buffering anymore and I can watch streaming movies in HD with no problem whatsoever.

Current results on speediest.net =
1.02Mbps/0.98Mbps.
Slow.

My comments above say it all for now. We've had this service for over a year now. The price was a bit misleading as we ordered online and the price went up after 9 months unexpectedly, granted it was only $8. Then they attempted to exort their customers with modem fees so I gladly got rid of the piece of garbage Ubee modem, bought my own Motorola Surfboard and combined that with a new router and it's turned it into rock solid service. Knock on wood. Don't get their equipment if you can help it is my only advice.

Ubee?

Hi from Albemarle, just a bit south of you. I have the Standard TWC Internet at 15Mbps, and it too is rock solid. But my question: what's wrong with a Ubee modem. Mine works so well and never falters from my purchased 15 Mbps. What am I missing?

Re: Ubee?

I had terrible luck with mine. The signal quality seemed very inconsistent and it gave my work VPN fits with many dropped connections. We tried a few of them and the issues never resolved. Getting the Motorola+Buffalo combo fixed all the issues.

Re: Ubee?

Hmmm.... Regardless of my positive Ubee experience, I might try your Motorola+Buffalo scenario, or some other non-TWC device. I may not know what I'm missing. Thanks.

Pricing

You're getting 30/5 from TWC for $59 a month, and that's after one year so not a promo rate? That's only $5 more than I pay for 15/1 from them. Do you have other TWC services like TV or phone? Other competitors in your area like FiOS or anything like that?

I continue to feel like I'm getting a poor value for $$$ here. But I'm an Internet-only customer, no TV service so they probably put the screws to me.

Re: Pricing

No we have just internet only. When we signed up we got it for about $50 I think. U-verse is really close, but not technically available here. AT&T DSL is only 6M and we had that before and it was awful. We get good 4G service, but no Fios or anything like that.

Wow, I am impressed. I even have U-Verse service available at my address. To get 20/2 Turbo from Time Warner they want $70/mo. Forget that.

You're getting a good deal, IMO.

Service has been better overall and even tech service on the phone has been much improved. Tech that come to the house however has not been good for me, some dont seem to know much about the service and the ones that do either dont really care enough or according to the support office forget to do certain things when replacing modems or routers that need to be done before leaving the residence in order to insure the equipment is working.
