When I had Roadrunner installed in 2002, it was the best!(especially considering my childhood home I also now have ownership of was on Rogers until very recently) It was installed and running the next day to boot! Since then it has been a rocky road of sorts but is starting to smooth out. The worst time was when neighboring areas went through the transition from Adelphia, which resulted in a busy call center and a slow and unreliable connection for us. There were other smaller bad streaks as well.

I can say that it has been pretty reliable lately over the last year or so, though speeds do vary at times. They usually are very good and close to the advertised 10/1 except during peak times on Mondays sometimes.

You should use a host file manager, an internal DNS, or Open DNS as RR's DNS servers are just horrible. I prefer the second option because most OpenDNS servers are pretty far away, though usually still much faster than RR's, not to mention much more reliable. Random name lookup problems that come out of nowhere were the biggest annoyance, as well as some IP changes for hostnames taking forever to propagate.

Routing itself is excellent and ping times were never very bad except during the aforementioned Transition time and for a few days when they implemented traffic shaping. Routes generally follow a good short path over the 2 Tier 1 backbones connected directly to them.

Now to the ugly. The tech support on the phones should be working at Burger King in some cases. They often fail to escalate problems that obviously need it. I have had a few either disconnect me or rush me. They also somehow believe there is a difference for their purposes between IE and Firefox and that only Windows can diagnose a connection. If you're a Linux user and have problems, prepare for loads of frustration and idiocy. If you can't lie and say you're typing it exactly as they say and that you're using Windows, prepare for at least a dual boot or use VMWare and omit the fact you're using it to run Windows. Example: Selenia: I only have Firefox because I'm on Linux RR: Do you want me to help you or not? Open IE please!

    or

RR: Open an MS-DOS Prompt and type ping -n 10 www.yahoo.com Selenia: I'm using Linux but I can ping for you in the Konsole just fine ping -c 10 www.yahoo.com RR: What version of Windows is that? Selenia: It's not Windows, it's Linux. Debian actually. RR: I see. Did you ever think that is the problem? You need to use what we support. Using hacked OSes only causes problems. Selenia: I see you do not have a clue!

Wasn't like I wasn't following his instructions using the syntax for my OS, I eventually demanded a supervisor and got my modem replaced. That solved the problem.

Roadrunner using traffic shaping that throttles nntp and P2P. It seems to be nowhere near as aggressive as my old ISP in my Canadian home(Rogers) and both protocols are still very usable. After they finally got the bugs out of it after implementation, it seems to cause benefit to other things during peak times, so I don't mind it too much since I use the internet for everything. It does not seem aimed at impeding your ability to download torrents and they still complete in a reasonable time usually. Seeding is not prevented either.

Overall, Roadrunner's experience can be decent using an external DNS server, provided you don't need tech support. The price is lower with bundles than is some slower dsl packages sold around here. It has its problems but I do think cable is more troubleprone overall than dsl, in my experience. It is much more stable than Rogers, but not as stable as the dsl providers I have used. It is very expensive now without packages, though that wasn't the case when I had my service connected and my rate never up before I got the packaged service with phone and digital cable. I only know the current rates without all that by inquiring for a friend who lives in the same area as me. To be fair, I have met some good techs at RR but just can't seem to get many good ones on the phone. Just be prepared if you don't use Windows. My friend uses a Mac and got the same kind of runaround I got until I got smart. I can usually deal with them when I have to now. You trade service and a little stability for the fastest line this area has to offer. It might be worth it depending on your needs.

Update: Moved across town and all has been atrocious. I have been having connection issues for weeks that TWC won't make any real effort to solve. They say my building is an issue, but they didn't bother telling me this when hooking me up. Besides, I call bs on it being anything to do with the building, especially since my service worked flawless until TWC discovered my neighbor's illegal hookup. Now they would rather butt heads with my landlord(they insist on ripping up every wall) and do nothing about my connection. Same frustration, same kinds of techs, and the same taking the day off work every call. I am so sick of it!

wow it will be ridiculous if every tech support on the phone have to learn every os's there is,Do you know how much money have to be spend to teach about using Fedora ,Ubuntu and so on + the top os's ..I think only Windows xp and later can be supported and os x ,if you have any other operating system that means ur smart enough to fix it yourself..or if you want that kind of support start paying over $100 a month for only 10mb d and 1 up

That's about the least of my worries now, but the annoying thing is I do what they say with my OS and they still tell me that I need to use Windows. I don't have to use any crapware I don't want. It shouldn't affect the core of what they do.

Living in the suburbs, my only real choices are DSL with at&t and cable internet with TimeWarner Cable. The 6mbps package with at&t costs $50 plus the phoneline. (We no longer have at&t for home phone service). The 10 mpbs package with TimeWarner Cable's Road Runner costs me about $57 a month. Tack on another $30 or so for TW's digital phone (2 lines) and that's not a bad deal. Extremely high speeds (10 mpbs download, 1 mpbs upload), included Usenet Access with 150 day retention just make the deal sweeter.

5/14/08: Around 8pm using a RR speedtest site. Showed my download speed was very low. Spent about one hour with RR tech support trying to fix it. They had me reboot the modem a few times. Plus run some tracerts and speedtests but I was still have problems. While the tier 3 tech was checking for more info about my problem. I rebooted the modem again for the heck of it. The modem downloaded a new firmware for it self. Now for some reason unknown my speeds are fine again.

7/7/07: Upgraded to the fastest speed available here. I'm now provisioned at 15000/768.

6/12/07: Around 10am, we ordered roadrunner. For our area fastest speed available is 5000/384. We got a install date for the very next day which was 6/13. The tech showed up around 5:00pm. Took the tech like 20 mins to do the work he needed. They supplyed the Motorola SB5101 series modem. Install went very smooth and got online without any problems. I'm getting around 4910/367 right now at peak time.

Only other broadband here besides TWC. Is embarq DSL which speed tops at 5000/768. Sure the upload is little more then TWC.

Look at the money I'll be saving. =) Since I dropped the dsl connect and land line. I own a prepay cell phone so that will work fine for me. A $20 dollar airtime card would last me for 3 months. hehe

I'm looking to save around $40 dollars a month. Just by changing to TWC.

With TWC I have 3 8300HD DVR set top boxes, and 2 3250HD Standard Set top boxes. In my package I have the DVR Service, All 4 moive premiums (HBO, Showtime which includes the movie channel, Starz, and Cinemax) I also get access to a wide variety of movies with Movies on Demand, and Video on Demand. I have the digital phone with all calling features, and I also have RoadRunner Turbo which 8.0/768, TWC is cranking up the speeds next month to 15/2. I have all of that for 2 year promotion, for 140 a month, and my sales agents says he can renew it for me. I had TWC forever, they are such a great company.

    reason for outage

Just some info. RR does network repairs and upgrades on wed. and Thur. after 12.00. Thats probably what caused your outage. They can last up to 6 hours if its longer than that its because an upgrade failed and they had to switch it back.

I talked to RR and asked them. Basicly if any work was being done which caused the lost connection. The person I talked to said no. I made the question total clear for anyone to understand.

Installation was quick and on time, provided by a third party. I do not currently subscribe to cable TV and was not pressured into subscribing to it. Installed modem was a Motorola SURFboard 4220, which is an older model which seems to work fine.

I ordered Road Runner Turbo which was 7Mbps down at the time and was recently increased to 10Mbps down. Upload remains at a slow 512 Kbps. For this reason, I may downgrade to Standard 7Mbps down/384 Kbps up since the neither the upload or download increase between standard and turbo are enough to make a big difference.

I have not yet experienced an unplanned outage at this location. I did have some performance issues for a few weeks which have been resolved, and were likely due to some work that was being done in my area.

Although talk about usage caps has died down recently, this remains a concern for me. The earlier rumored numbers were very low and obviously there to protect their cable television revenue and to prevent independent IP TV from ever being able to take off.

At this time Road Runner seems to be the best value for my area. I will re-evaluate my decision if low usage caps are implemented, prices increase, or depending on what AT&T does with U-verse in this area.

Signed up for 2 year price lock in order to get 15mb x 2mb service. Speeds so far are nice and stable. In speed test, I am getting about 11.5 down and about 2.5 up.

Not a fan of RoadRunner's random hick-ups and node problems that can cause downtime but the install time was simply a 30 minute wait for them to turn on the Turbo setting.

Better than AT&T's U-Verse and the best option around for the price. I get their 3-Pack (Cable, Phone & 15/2 Turbo Internet) here in San Antonio for a 2 year commitment. However, it only costs me $150 to break the deal. Pretty cheap as far as long term contract cancelation fees go.

I didn't ever imagine myself becoming a Road Runner customer. Since there are cheaper DSL alternatives (not to mention cable ISPs Earthlink and Local.net on the same pipe), I figured why go with RR? Well, there's a couple of good reasons.

Here's some quick background: Up until now I was an Earthlink Cable customer. Time Warner supplied the modem, install and billing (just like RR), only it was $3. a month cheaper for essentially the same service. I was a happy customer and never thought I would switch ISPs again. I could have stayed with EL but my 6 month $29.95 promotion just ended and I was shopping. I figured for the premium content (CNN, etc.) and LOCAL billing support (EL is in India now) it was worth the trouble.

One call to Time/Warner got me on Road Runner standard so fast it was practically instant! I even got their 6 month for $29.95 promo rate as a new RR customer, which was really cool. The operator at TW clicked a few keys on her end, my modem rebooted and BAM I was on Road Runner! I am looking forward to the same great level of service and bandwidth I was already getting, now I can actually UNDERSTAND what the support people are saying to me on the phone, without needing to repeat anything!

UPDATE 12/21/04: A few days ago I got upgraded to 5MB DL as part of the T/W nationwide rollout... I don't see a noticeable change in performance, only on speed tests. I must admit that the connection has been solid as a rock the past couple of months! Promo pricing runs out in two months; I expect to keep the connection but may switch back to EL to keep lower rates while downgrading CATV to basic.

UPDATE 6/26/05: I'm still a Road Runner subscriber, despite the lure of paying a buck or two less with a reseller; I won't go back to Earthlink, and since there's so little known about local.net I don't feel it worth just a buck a month in savings. Connection is still extremely reliable with almost no downtime; Vonage still works great too. My promotion ended and I am paying $45 a month for RR, though I did manage to lower my CATV bill by finding an unadvertised tier which still offers digital channels and saves me about $14 a month.

UPDATE 1/11/06: The DSLR bot is nagging me to update this ISP review, but in all honesty nothing has really changed. Reliability has been stellar since the last update with no noticeable downtime, though there have been occasional QOS issues with Vonage which may be packet loss related (short lived occurences at that). Mail works great, no signal issues to report and billing is consistent. A smooth ride continues, but a little more upload speed would be welcome.

UPDATE 10/27/06: My needs have changed and I was looking to save a few bucks, so today I called TWC and downgraded to Road Runner Lite 768/128. Since I do mostly surfing and e-mail I won't miss the higher speeds too much and I'll be saving $180 a year to boot. They switched me right away without any kind of hassle too.

UPDATE 5/7/07: The BBR bot rears its head again to update, but there's not much new to report. Apparently speed upgrades to standard and premium tiers finally reached HVC customers, though I cannot confirm this since I'm still on RR Lite and that tier remains stuck at 768/128.

UPDATE 9/10/07: Not much news here, just wanted to say I cannot recall the last time my Road Runner service went down... it's that good!! If only they'd raise the download speed to at least 1.5 mbps, it would be an even better value (though I suspect more RR standard customers would downgrade).

UPDATE 10/23/07: HVC just upped the RR Lite service to double the previous speeds, now at 1.5/256! Humming smoothly, there's less pressure to upgrade back to the standard tier.

UPDATE 05/11/08: The DSLR bot compels me to update my review yet again! Just one brief outage lasting a couple of hours; other than that it's been a smooth ride as usual, with an upgrade to triple play that had no ill effects on my connection with the supplied VOIP modem.

    Update: 5/11/2008

On April 30th I received an email informing me that Roadrunner Turbo tier's speed were upgraded to 15M/2M, and it would cost only $10/month more with a bundle package. After mulling over it for a few days, I decided to take the bait and upgrade. After a short call to a friendly local customer service rep, a modem powercycle, and some tweaking via the great information provided by this site, I was off to the races.

Once all the prep was done, I, of course, had to test out my new speeds. I initiated downloads to various sites in order to witness the throughput. The data transfer stabilized a little above 1,620k/sec. Impressive. There are frequent times, however, where the data stream seems to stall (the activity light goes from being solidly lit to flashing), and the counter briefly drops below 1,000k/sec before creeping back up. I assume that this is due to the ancient Surfboard 4200 modem that I've had for almost 6 years. I'm going to try to swap out for one of the 5000 series and see if that offers any improvement. Upload speeds hover around 230~250k/sec, also impressive. Overall I am more than satisfied with the speeds.

I am actually surprised that this tier became available in Birmingham. It's usually the modus operandi of these large telecommunications companies to not improve their services unless they're under direct threat from a competitor. The only alternative here is AT&T (Bellsouth) DSL and the myriad of re-sellers, and that tops out at 6M/768K. Roadrunners old tiers were already faster, so the availability of this 15MB tier was both unexpected, and miraculous. Will this be one of the rare times that a company is being proactive instead of reactive?

$10 more per month for more than double the downstream, and quadruple the upstream sounds like an excellent deal to me. The standard tier remains at 7M/512k, and it remains to be seen if that will ever be upgraded. Also, it seems by the way it is worded on their product descriptions that you cannot subscribe to the turbo tier as a stand-alone service, so to anyone considering ordering this, be aware of that.

The one gripe I have with the service, and it's been a constant detriment since the service was introduced in this area is the quirky routing. Before even reaching the backbone, packets get routed from Birmingham to Tampa Bay, then Dallas before being sent off. This adds 50MS to the latency before it even gets off the network. The lag isn't *THAT* bad, but it certainly can be better. This isn't such a negative as to lower my satisfaction with the service, but to any gamers that are obsessive ping watchers, be advised. Also, there is a minor concern regarding how the network will handle the strain of this new tier. This franchise is still on the DOCSIS 1.1 profile, and schools are about to let out for summer recess, so it'll be interesting to see if these snappy speeds will hold up during prime hours during the summer.

Bottom line is that for $10 more per month over the standard tier, there really isn't much to lose. I recommend trying the service ASAP.

    End review update.

RoadRunner has been available in the Birmingham area since about March 2001. I pretty much ignored it since I allready had broadband with a great local DSL provider (see HiWAAY review for zip 35210), and also from hearing all the horror stories about cable co's overselling bandwidth. Recently, they drastically stepped up their advertising on the local stations, cable, and radio to the point that you couldn't go an hour without hearing an advertisement about te benefits of getting Road Runner, so that, along with the fact that I recently bought a new PC, I decided what the heck, I'll give it a shot

Ordering couldn't be easier. After navigating the quick dial menu, I got the rep on the phone. After giving her the information, she informed me that the earliest install date was 5 days from the call. She asked me for the best time, and after that, that was the end of the call. Simple, short, sweet.

On the 5'th day, the tech arrived, right on time. He got to work, installing the service, and was a pleasure to talk to. The installation was quick...actually a little quicker than I expected. I know that generally cable installations are a lot less complicated and usually faster than DSL, but there wasn't much done. He split the coax, connected the modem (SurfBoard 4200) to the nic, phoned in the MAC address to the office, set up the account, and all was go All of that was completed in only about 15 to 20 minutes. I thought it was more to it than that like wires being checked, checking signal levels, etc. Maybe it always this easy, but there is no self install option available here. It was free, so meh.

Speeds are as advertised with tests showing 1900~2100 down (mostly in the high 2000's), and about 350 up, which IS noticably faster that the DSL. So far the speed hasn't degraded at all, and I hoping it stays that way, but with the advertising blitz that's going on at the moment, I wonder. I haven't needed to call tech support yet (knocks on wood), so no rating for that.

There is only one small gripe I have with the service, and that is the routing. For some reason, Birmingham RoadRunner is routed through Texas. After a little research, it seems that there is no POP for the Birmingham area and it enters the backbone after hitting the Texas gateway. Pings aren't really bad at all...especially not as bad as some other RR customers are reporting, but they're noticably higher than the DSL (and less hops also).

Here is a traceroute from the PC with the DSL to the PC which has RoadRunner on it (only because I can't get XP on the RR PC to output the traceroute info to a text file).

Again, those pings aren't really bad just from looking at them, but since I'm pinging a PC that's 3 feet away from me, those aren't that good after all. I even did an ARIN lookup of my RR IP, and it states it's owned by RoadRunner SouthWEST, not SouthEAST. If they aren't going to put a gateway/POP in the Birmingham area, would it make more sense to route it to a closer place like Memphis (Midsouth RR) or even TampaBay or CFL. I also discovered that RR in Mississippi and Louisiana are also routed through Texas, so if something ever happens to the routers in Texas, it's going to affect a LOT of people. I would love a POP to be placed in Birmingham, but unfortunately I don't think any changes are coming any time soon, as it isn't noticable to the casual web browser, only gamers, and since I plan to use the connection for the upcoming XBox Live service, this may be a problem down the line

Anyway, I'm rambling now. Bottom line is that overall it's a great service, and I recommend it to anyone who wants highspeed internet without going through the hassles associated with DSL, however if you're a games, you may want to look elsewhere for your needs....like...DSL.

UPDATE: Recently I went to RR's customer service site (help.rr.com) and filled out the help request form that their tech are supposed to read. I mentioned me being a gamer, and basically repeated some of the things I mentioned about the routing in this review. I sent it off not really expecting anything to be done about it as I'm just one customer, and a gamer at that. A couple of days, a site I frequent wasn't responding, so I tracerouted it to see if I could see any problem. I then noticed that instead of the usual Texas nodes I saw Tampa Bay. Thinking it was a fluke, I tracerouted dslreports, and sure enough, Tampa Bay appeared again. While Tampa Bay still isn't a local POP, it is a LOT closer than Austin Texas. Pings have decreased drastically, and the upload speed has even improved. I'm not sure if this routing change is the result of the letter I sent, or was just a coincidence, but anyway, major KUDOS to Roadrunner, you've made this customer very happy.

Used to have Earthlink MuniWiFi. Great when it worked, great price, but would go down for days at a time. RR 10/1 service has been much more reliable and satisfying. It took RR about a month to figure out where the nearest cable junction was before they could run the cable to my house. Once that was found installation was completed in a few hours.

Ambit cable modem, works just fine.
