Time Warner's cable service is fast and reliable, but they want more money despite my paying over $250 per month for one of their highest-end packages.

Metered usage will be the end of TWC for me.

I will go with Grande DSL if metered usage comes to TWC in Austin.

·AT&T U-Verse
**************Update July 4, 2012 **************
I will be canceling the tv portion shortly .... It went from $62 to almost $74 [before taxes and junk fees] with zero changes in the service. I have been evaluating the service and and found that mostly watch channels that are over the air and barely use the dvr. It is not worth it....

They will be canceled out in the next couple days.... after I install the antenna in the attic. Goodbye TWC..

**************Update August 20, 2012 **************
Well, today I canceled Time Warner Cable - Roadrunner service and their cable-VoIP services.. as AT&T U-Verse [IP-DSL Service] was installed with U-Voice (tm) service.

This is the last update for Time Warner Cables services.

**************Update August 7, 2012 **************
Well, the bill went up to $154 or so per month for the digital cable, phone and 10 Meg internet services [The prices for the services effectively went to full retail.]. I called to try to get the bill lowered a little bit but was offered only a $7 dollar discount. Went online, checked out AT&T U-Verse availibility.. and I qualified for the internet and phone.
Called up AT&T, got an appointment for the U-Voice, and IP-DSL services to be setup in 2 weeks..
It's unfortunate, but if Time Warner Cable thinks I'm going to pay $154 and change when new subscribers would only pay $89.99 + $7-8 for box rental and $10-12 for taxes / fees = about $110 for the same exact services.. I'd find someone else to provide service - and I did.

**************Update May 25, 2012 **************
The techs who work in this area took care of the problems with the cable phone / internet services.. I have not had to call them (for trouble calls anyways..). Now if I could just get Rachael from Cardholder Services to stop calling! [What I want is for TWC to ignore the privacy bit and show the CPN [calling party number] / ANI information instead of the fake caller ID information recieved from these telmarketors.

**************Update September 12, 2011 **************
Well, It seems after posting in the Time Warner Cable direct forum that the service has become more stable. The line monitoring results, which were on file when I posted there indicated line noise, which has since been largely dealt with. [Otherwise the phone and internet would have keep disconnecting as it was.] It has taken about 5 years to finally address the problems with the phone / internet going out, without any explanation for why; until now for it to get fixed. I did not receive any credits for the many, many times I called [and they couldn't explain why it wasn't working]...

**************Update August 17, 2011 **************
Time Warner Cables service has become quite unstable / unusable.. with problems with the TV, phone and internet... I have had a tech come out no less then 4-5 times in the last 4 months or so. The last time I called a TWC SignatureHome (tm) tech came out the same day - about 2 hours after calling. [Very unexpected for a same day appointment.- No I do not have Signaturehome service - but that is the tech they sent.] The tech consolidated the service for the phone / internet onto the Arris touchstone eMTA adapter, as well as checked the signal levels. The last tech determined that there is line noise in the area, that is undoubtedly causing the phone and internet to go out, as well as problems with the digital cable service. They also setup a line monitor which the results showed the problems with the service / lines...
There is problems with the line even before any splitters / amp as well, as the modem return is at about ~56 dBmV - without any splitter - hooked directly into the cable coming from the pole / lockbox outside...

At this point, I would not recommend them or their services.. until they finally resolve the problems.. it is causing me to miss phone calls - even where the person being called can not hear me.. even though the phone itself works fine, the internet keeps going out - after the modem return goes up without any changes to the wiring / equipment [the modem return is going to about ~54 dBmV or more, ]and blocking on the digital cable..

Supposedly, they have a crew working to resolve the line noise.. hopefully that will be done soon... We have been having problems for a few years already.. this is getting old.
**************************************************************************************************
I'm giving them a month.. if they don't get it together, I'm going to call AT&T and have them move the phone and possibly the internet [or a reseller without caps... ie DSLExtreme]
**************************************************************************************************
**************Update January 21, 2010 **************
Well, not much has changed since the last update. TWC came out fixed the service problems with the internet / phone.. they switched it to a different port where it connects outside.. [The signal is good enough I could easily have 16 cable outlets in my house without calling them up. (It is about ~10 dBmV before any splitters or amp / where it connects to the wiring in my house. There is also a cable amp 10 db [forward /reverse] installed, as the modem return would otherwise be at ~55 dBmV and I would not be able to connect.)

Since the time of the last update, AT&T has been doing work in the area and getting the lines ready in the neighborhood for the U-Verse service, as a result, the 6 Meg DSL is now available, before when the cable tv/internet/phone was setup only the 768k dsl was available. There is a pole mounted VRAD about 1/2 block (about ~1,500 feet or so from my house except that the wiring in this area connects someplace else in the opposite direction. )

**************Update June 18, 2009 **************
Called up Time Warner Cable due to the price creeping up- the pricing of Direct TV + RR internet + TWC phone service was cheaper. [Even satelite with AT+T phone+ DSL was much more reasonable priced. Told them that Direct TV was cheaper [it is] for the service and asked them what kind of promotion they could give me w/o changing the services and they reduced the price for 1 year or so. It also appears as the weather (temp. + humidity ) gets worse, the phone and internet start having problems where I would not be able to use those services.

**************Update June 9, 2009 **************
Time Warner Cables services are becoming less reliable.. they did a 'soft' disconnect of my services even though there is no balance (except for what is due later this month).
(This was the second time this happened this year.)

The phone, digital cable, and internet were out for at least 4 hours,.. if I had to call 911 it would not have been possible. (Ah the reliability of the Bell System-> even if the service was shut off you would be able to call in an emergency! )

**************Update May 11, 2009 **************
Well, since the last update, TWC setup powerboost for standard RR customers. It does help speedup some downloads. The costs has crept up to about $142 month..
It would be cheaper to get RR internet, Digital phone and direct tv or Dish Network.

The return for the cable modem has been approaching 55 dBmV causing the modem to come offline. (As is usually the case, usually when I want to use it.)

**************Update November 3,2008 **************
Well, since the last review update, TWC updated the software on the SA 3800 to "Mystro". The caller ID on tv is working. AT&T is working on installing Uverse in this area so the HSI price went down to $34.95 per month. (Competition is good!) .

The free DVR service continues to work great, only wish that it had a bigger hard drive.

**************Update April 1,2008 **************
The All The Best package that is installed works great.
Everything works as described, except the Caller ID on TV service that is currently being worked on. During a call to Time Warner Cable, because of a question about the bill, they found a promotion for free DVR service for a year.
(Not bad, it saved about $10 per month

The price breakdown of the service as follows:
Digital Access $39.99
HSI $45.99
Digital Phone: $39.99
DVR Service: $0.00
Taxes+fees = ~ $10
**************Update November 19,2007 **************
Just an update, the service was raised to 7 Meg / 512k for free a few months ago. The service does work as advertised; seeing 90%+ of rated speed.

**************Update May 16,2007 **************
The cable internet service has worked quite well so far, with very few outages.
The service was also upgraded to the 5 meg / 384 k as well.
Speedtests reveal that I'm easily getting 90% + of the bandwith.

************** Update November 11,2006 **************

After the inital setup, four additional cable outlets were installed.
Below is the modem signal levels before TWC was called out for a DVR upgrade swap..

Downstream Status Operational
Channel ID 1
Downstream Frequency 711000000 Hz
Modulation 256QAM
Bit Rate 800768 bits/sec
Power Level -13.8 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio 34.1 dB

Upstream Channel

Upstream Status Operational
Channel ID 1
Upstream Frequency 33000000 Hz
Modulation 16QAM
Bit Rate 384000 bits/sec
Power Level 50.5 dBmV

The service worked at that point but the picture was getting grainy.
The cable tech went ahead and consolitated all the splitters, and installed a cable amp to improve the picture.

After the tech:
Downstream Status Operational
Channel ID 1
Downstream Frequency 711000000 Hz
Modulation 256QAM
Bit Rate 800768 bits/sec
Power Level 0.8 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio 34.1 dB

Upstream Channel
Upstream Status Operational
Channel ID 1
Upstream Frequency 33000000 Hz
Modulation 16QAM
Bit Rate 384000 bits/sec
Power Level 46.5 dBmV

************************************* Original review *************************************
During the third week of Auguest, 2006 Time Warner Cable was called to setup an appointment to hookup service
[TV, Phone, Internet].

The technician arrived early for the appointment and went out and hooked the service up at the pole. Then the digital cable [using a Pioneer cable box] and a Scientfic Atlanta DPX2203 MTA [Phone /Modem] was installed. The phone was hooked up the phone jack and the modem was hooked up to a computer.

After hooking it up to the computer, it was determined that the modem was not provisioned for service - a call to the Time Warner Cable back office took care of that and it was online. The service level setup was RR Lite [ 768/ 384 kbps] in this area.

During the week and a half since the install the service has been reliable.

5/29/2013

After another 2 advanced tech team visits still have issues with internet,,advanced team is an excellent group! however can not isolate problem/issues on my line.

2/12/2013

huge thank you to TWC direct guys here on DSLR! a bigger thanks to "TWCablePaulS" for putting me directly in touch with "Joe" in SATX, i think and do hope the signal issues have been isolated and they are working the issues, Just shouldnt have taken 5 years to get here!!

will update tech support/review as repairs/stability issues are repaired

update 1/23/13

well still having signal issues on the line makes internet a none pleasurable experience.

update 12/30/11

currently have twc 30/5 plan.
connection reliability the worst, there is a somewhat known electrical problem in the home that any cable modem hates. have not been able to isolate this issue whatsoever, tho cable modem consistantly lets me know its there with ease.
techs are consistant its on my end tho electricians fail to even find or even isolate said issue, electricians resolve is complete rewire of home. NOT possible due to costs.

connection uptime 50 percent not good, ping timeout, page load errors. modem shows good levels at all times but huge amount of corrections and t3 and t4 errors

ubee modems/gateways are utter uter uter garbage.

not at all happy with this service

-What speed did you order, at what monthly price?,: Have had cable/roadrunner for about 4 year currently @ the time i switched back from DSL i signed up on road runner premium @ 29.99 for six months speed then 8/512 now 10/1

How was the order/install process?,: excellent went and picked up the modem same day and service was up.

What was the home equipment?, arris voip/cable modem.

-Static IP, dynamic IP, or PPPoE?, dynamic

Other bad/good experiences?: the good, well it works when i need it to work unlike the other competitor here, more value for money, overall better tech support then the competitor

the bad, billing department is a pain, some bad support staff, when i first got my services connected on hsi service they screwed up the whole order and the rate of 29.99 was not entered into the sytem, it took 4 months to finaly get the correct price set, and to issue correct credits, where order was entered wrong. among other over billing issues. overall have patience when speaking to billing reps they do there best to resolve issues, in my market anyway, not so with compition

UPDATE 12/31/07

Service for the most part rock solid, in the past 2 months there have been several short lived outages, seems TWC has been upgrading things to prepare for something to be released here in this market, more HD?, Switched video?, who knows at least its only a few min. at a time and at very late night hours.
Getting ready for a move within 2 weeks and debating transfer of current services or sign up for a whole new package, will update when this happens, TWC has some good offers out right now we shall see.

UPDATE 2/1/08

Got an excellent deal to have services moved
1. one hd-dvr box with dvr subscription, one regular hd-box
a. digi-pic 1000, got the hd service with this part of the package
c. free showtime and movie channel free for a year
2. digital phone unlimited
3. roadrunner standard, upgraded to turbo for 9.95 more a month
im now paying about $3 a month less prior to what i had, didnt have the boxes or digi cable, so this was a deal saving about 45 a month. total monthly is $149. and change. was paying $152.

installition date was pushed back due to an huge order screw up.
For whatever reason someone placed an order "using my new address" for service and was scedualed for install at the time i was getting this deal thus pushing back install for a week. so a total of two weeks for install time :/

1 3rd party installer came out and re-wired the whole home, and new drop, showed up on time
4- outlets 3 for tv 1 for digiphone/internet
2 outlets for phone
this took a good 3 hours of installers time

got everything going explained a little of the new hd-dvr box, as he himself said it was the first one of its kind he had seen, the sa 84 and was on his way
next day comes and internet/phone goes out,,,,yay!!!!!

call up twc customer service they scedule a tech for 6 days later. so no phone/internet in this time period

a TWC tech shows up and time, he is taking readings climbs up the poll, taking more readings, comes down and plugs the arris box back up and we have service
he goes on to explain there is a grounding issue somewhere and this is why service is being knocked out to the arris box, he said techn. he should shut services off untill this grounding issue is resolved, he further explains he would not do so and said to undo the cable wire for a few seconds when this occurs, sure enough to this day we have to do this near every day. we had an electrician come and put a new grounding rod, "there was not one before", but has not solved our grounding issues :/// we are looking to re-wire the whole home soon, not a cheap fix and well dont want to spend major $$$ if we are going to re-wire soon.

at anyrate service has been again solid phone/internet the hddvr and the other dvr are something to be desired i must say

update
9-22-08

wow time sure does go.

new speeds now of 15/2 with powerboost of upto 24mbps nice.
had outside breaker panel replaced and that solved internet/phone going out for all of about 5 months or so, tho the disconnects only happen maybe once a week currently. it is still due to a power issue in the home :////// and not a cheap fix.

anyway, the hd-dvr box is ok, clunky os/recording but works
the pace HD box royaly sucks, locks up takes forever to reboot. good thing i dont watch much TV. other then the occasonal blip with internet service has been rock solid with only one outage

update 7-2-09

time does go, but where?

the cable side, i have downgraded to the cheapest cable channels 2-14 and downgraded my internet as well to the 3mb speeds, money is tight right now.
i actually dont find any use paying $60 a month in cable when what i do watch i watch it via the internet when i want, HD compression here seems to have gotten very bad here, to much boxing and pixilation to say hay i got "HD" internet is rock solid tho

TW and RR could be more competitive in ALL markets
Phone tech support is the absolute worst. Continuing to have customers redo their settings, reboot modems/routers and what-not. If it worked last night, and nothing at customer has changed, then it is the ISP!
Network status, I feel, should be real-time and include specific information. Messages like "Road Runner will be conducting Planned Maintenance on the IP network." and that's for almost every situation ... Fix it and LEAVE IT ALONE!

Bottom Line: I like my service and connection but it could be alot better.

The good thing about Roadrunner which im going to call it no madder what is that its a very stable 50mb internet connection there is really nothing to say bad about it since everything switched to DOCSIS 3.0 Technical support is awesome and the people at my local call centers are awesome. i will complain if i have a problem though.

they are great at tech support dedicated drop and everything

the downside is the monopoly of the prices of the internet Google fiber is 70 bucks Google fiber and Tv with some good HD programming 150 thats awesome. just don't understand why TWC can't get with 2013 and upgrade everyone to 100mbps for 70 bucks or even 90 bucks. japan 30 bucks for 100/100 sweeden 29.99 for a 100mb wireless unlimited data plan with their LTE advanced

but yes i love TWC and thats why i complain.

Have you tried bridge mode?

I'm not sure what modem you are using but many of us have found issues with the ubee router. If you turn the router off by enabling bridge mode it works like a charm.

The flash test to L.A. crashed over 5Mb (looks to be a flash issue 11.2-r202)

Supposed to have 10Mb speeds and have been notified that by mid year, we'll be bumped to 15Mb (June/July).

They have not permanently fixed the dropped connection issue - it's a bad cable that needs replacing and the only thing done was to replace a couple of splitters and install an amp. Part of the problem is line degradation (it's been up for over 10 years - decade) and needs to be replaced. Could also be a node issue as it's only the internet and voip that drops. TV stays up.

It's the voip drops that are of real concern as this is our primary phone line - Had switched to TWC Voip due to a bad landline (verizon did a temporary replacement after the line shorted out and called 911 while officer was there in response to earlier call). That was over 7 years ago and Verizon has never replaced the temp line with a buried one.

Signal Levels

Check your modem signal levels and see if it could possibly be a line noise issue. I had the same problem for the longest time with TWC, ended up being a line issue inside my house. Guy came out, replaced all the wiring and it worked perfect after that.

May need a spectrum analyzer

If you can get access to a spectrum analyzer you can check the cable for signal level and noise. One problem I had with Mediacom was the signal level was very low and there was so much noise on the line that it almost completely swamped out the signal. They had some nice equipment but nobody who seemed to know how to use it. I showed the cable guy the problem on my own analyzer and got them to turn up the signal level which helped for a few days but then it went back to not working again. One problem with cable is that if you have a white trash trailer park down the street they have probably tapped into the cable illegally which interferes with your signal. Everytime the cable guy from Mediacom came out to my house they were always saying they had to remove illegal connections down the street!

Service has been better overall and even tech service on the phone has been much improved. Tech that come to the house however has not been good for me, some dont seem to know much about the service and the ones that do either dont really care enough or according to the support office forget to do certain things when replacing modems or routers that need to be done before leaving the residence in order to insure the equipment is working.

I have tried all three options for my block. I bundled RR with TWC cable hoping to improve. Service speed is less than advertised - averaging about 6Mbs... and that is with an eqpt upgrade. I purchased a $200 modem of my own as an addendum to the modem provided [at the suggestion of the workman who admitted that there was no other option to gain speed]. I still get mostly under 10 Mbs.

I would drop RR like a hot potato if I could get Fios.

I have tried to get the digital cable and Road Runner to operate with support from Time Warner. 4 months have gone by without digital cable service and intermittent Road Runner. The service provider is Time Warner. I have micropixelation and channels 50% of the channels (not Premium) not having a picture or sound. All the cable has been replaced from inside the home to the line extender. The cable box has been replaced. No joy. the Road Runner will go off for two to three days. The tech support people will make a service call, but it will not occure for three to 5 days later.
