I've had Roadrunner for about a year now. Installation was very fast but Roadrunner said they would come 8am-5pm(gee.. they didn't have to be so specific LoL). They gave a 3com ISA nic which died in a couple months, called and got a new one(exact same one). That one died in a month so i went to CompUSA and picked up a $10 one and now it's all smooth. Performance was about 75k/sec downloads but now Roadrunner is adding 3 DS3 circuits and plus i "tweaked" my pc and now i can get 450k+/sec which is amazing. Service has gone down twice in one year, once due to a problem accident in my area and the other due to network upgrading. Those were very short and i used dial up in the meantime. Live chat with tech 24/7 if you need help which is very good. Bottom line? Very fast!!! Reliable, good value and again great performance! I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!

More like Road Kill in North East Ohio

I get extremely poor service from neo.rr.com.
took me 33 minutes to download an 800K file from CONXION.
I used the tools for testing my download/upload speeds and it came back "barely broadband"
I have had RR for a year and am certainly glad Telocity is now in my area and I am 4000 feet from the CO.
I will be saying "beep beep" to all you old RR fans when I blaze past you with Telocity.com.

Roadrunner is the best service that I have had. Of course, the only ISP I
have had before that is AOL and a small local company. Before install, we
were notified that for the $50 do-it-yourself install we would get the cable
into our house, and be given the ethernet card, but we would need to put the
card in ourselves. When the installer came, he hadn't heard anything about
this free card thing. We called our local RR HeadQueaters (Rochester, NY)
and they instructed the installer to find a PC Installer and get a card to
give us. Ok, so that turned out OK. Well, the installer ran the new cable
in, and he left it above the ground and said somebody would come soon with a
tool to put the cable into the ground. The person didn't show up for a
week, and I couldn't mow my lawn because of this cable running across it, so
we called. The person came the next day. The only problems with service I
have had are infrequent "no cable light lit" experiences, and on 6/19/00, I
tried to get onto Amazon.com to order a Handspring Visor (I had finally
saved up enough money) and no connection to any site. Called the tech
number and they had a message saying "we are currently experiencing a
problem with road runner in all areas". The odd thing was my neighbors had
a connection, and that tech number is the same number you call to order the
service. With some of my problems, though, when I called the Techs sounded
very stupid and gave advice that I had already tried.

Road Runner in New York City

I have Road Runner in New York City and its descent. I get about 76K down and 35K up. I ping 50 in Quake3Arena so its fine. Sometimes i ge disconnected at night because a lot of people are online but connection goes right back up in a second. Also I didn't get Network card from the tech i got a USB adapter which sucked, so i bought a Linksys Network card for 20 bucks and it is very good now. Road Runner is descent but not for serious internet users.

hrm..i'm in woodside..my cable used to get ~2mbs (250K) from most major servers (aol, cdrom, etc).. i think you should have them look atyour line..and also don't go for the usb adapter..insist on ethernet/nics..your speeds should be much higher than that..

Re: Road Runner in New York City

I agree with salman. You should be getting better speeds. Maybe a dslreport tweak will do, but I'm guessing that a RoadRunner tech needs to check your lines. Then again maybe it's that bandwidth sharing issue. Anyway, if you switch to Verizon DSL then you might get 0/0 like many former Verizon customers did.

Not for serious internet use? I work at home (Tues/Thur) as a Systems Developer (ColdFusion/SQL/Javascript/etc) via company VPN, take online courses, bank/pay bills, dslreports, etc. RoadRunner speeds really makes telecommuting easier.

After going through the typical Verizon horror stories, I switched to RoadRunner. The first week was great. Double the speed of Verizon at the same price!

Well, on the second week RoadRunner was not syncing. So, I called tech support and got through in less than 5 minutes. You won't believe this, but unlike Verizon, they told me that they would schedule an installer to come out AND without my asking, the tech credited my account for $20.00!

The installer has been out and fixed a loose connection in less than 15 minutes. Now, if I were still with Hellrizon, I would still be waiting to talk to a Level 1 tech who would have asked me to disconnect the modem, reboot the computer, reconnect the modem, and tell me that they're not sure what the problem is but they're working on it and falsely promise to call me back in a couple of days, weeks, years, decades .....

Even though I had this minor problem with RoadRunner the bad service and short term connection with Verizon has made me appreciate RoadRunner's great technical support and service.

Re: Speeds fast when it works

Weak signal? That's exactly what I had!! That's the first thing the traveling tech checked with his sensor at the PC/Modem location. After that, he immediately went outside checked the outer house connection for signal strength then went straight to the communal junction box and found a loose connection. Verizon didn't even try to provide that service.

After being with Verizon, RoadRunner is definitely better. I wasn't enthusiastic about switching to Time Warner/AOL but after the Verizon scam, RoadRunner was definitely the better choice. Twice the speed for the same cost.

As I often mention, it's like anything else in business, if you don't get the service you expect then take your business elsewhere. If RoadRunner isn't taking care of your business then fire them. I fired Verizon.

RoadRunner provides better support, service, and repair than Verizon in the Fairfax VA area.
Beep Beep verizon

Recommendation: Folks don't pull your oldtech modem until you're comfortable with your broadband provider. Get a free ISP like Juno. If/when the broadband goes down and you need a connection for work, email, banking, dslreports, etc., then you can still connect.

Just my two shiny pennies worth.

You're right about bandwidth sharing. So far, so good. I'll have to wait and see about the shared bandwidth issue. On the otherhand, Verizon lied/oversold and they kept crashing their equipment. So, Verizon DSL service equaled speeds of 0/0.

All bandwidth is shared at *some* point. I have a telocity connection at 784kbs. In the evening between the prime hours of 7:30 - 10 it slows down to around 100kbs. Seems that the pipe from our area to the Chicago POP is saturated. Cable modems *just* became available in our area. Mine is being installed on December 1st.

Ahm DSL doesn't share bandwigth, i have my 608/128; 24/7 rock solid. One of the big advantages to DSL lines is that they are not cable modems and they do not share bandwigth. Unless you got a shitty ISP that "overbooked" in your town and cannot provide sufficient bandwigth at the CO you shouldn't experience no slowdowns with dsl in prime hours. I don't.

Re: Speeds fast when it works

You just must be a lucky customer - however yours, and EVERY other DSL connection, is shared. The ONLY section of your DSL pipe that isn't shared is your line from the CO, however once your pipe reaches the CO your line IS shared with every other DSL line on ALL of the local exchanges that your CO is the switch for. This "shared" portion of DSL often greatly outnumbers the shared nodes on cable. So you can enjoy your 1500-2000 feet of personal bandwidth but after that your shared.
and P.S. I can get upload speeds near your d/l of 608 on my RoadRunner.

Re: Speeds fast when it works

Yeh, I know, some say ya can't trust these speed tests, but RoadRunner has always seemed about twice as fast as Verizon. Here's a typical dslreports speed test that I just ran.
** Speed 1247(down)/194(up) kbps **
(At least 24 times faster than a 56k modem)
No bandwidth sharing slowdowns yet.

It's true that you don't share the 'last mile' bandwidth with your neighborhood, you are going to share the pipe from the DSLAM up to the internet. So if your DSL provider has choosen to oversubscribe that connection, which everyone else on the DSLAM is sharing, then your performance will be impacted.

Same thing happened to me My speed was fast when i first got RoadRunner and about 3 months later I slowed down to about a line speed of 500kps.
I was blaming RoadRunner for this and fuming furiosly to myself. I was even considering getting DSL from earthlink.
Then I found this site and used the tweak section to tweek my registry. And today I got a line speed of (8000kps down) I'm not joking this is true. actually it was even higher but I rounded it off. I think this is what happened I installed the new Windows Millenium edition upgrade from 98
about a month ago and since then my line speed has been crawling like a turtle untill I tweaked the registry.
So maybe you should do the same.
oyeah if you upgraded from win98 to WinMe then While your in the registry. delete the value called (DefaultRcvWindow.old) thats your old value for Win98 I think (DO NOT delete DefaultRcvWindow if it dosn't have (.old after it.
I dont know if this will help your speed but it may.
I did this yesterday with intuition... (i wasnt sure if I'd ruin my comp and have to reinstall widows.
but having two values (DefaultRcvWindow and DefaultRcvWindow.old) I figured the one with .old wasn't nessisary and possible was slowing me down.
so you may want to do the same.

awsome speeds, no loss of connection

I got rr about 1 month ago the service is awsome I downloaded 7.2mb file in 49 seconds. I have never lost my connection and it has always been super fast. the only problem i had was on the install the poor tech was given a bad modem and a bad nic card I ended up having 3 techs show up the next day and do all sorts of tweaks to my computer till they figure out it was their bad stuff. They were also nice enough to fix non internet stuff on my computer. I'm one of the first in my area to get rr and would recommend it to everyone very good value

After a year of ISDN service at around $70.00/month for the phone lines and another $25.00 per month for an ISP, I decided to jump to RR through Time-Warner when became available to me here in Houston, TX. The price is $45.00/mo without cable TV. The sales rep was helpful and courteous, and the installer came promptly on the appointed day. Installation was easy. As soon as the installer left, I started having problems. I could not keep a connection for more than a minute. After an hour on the phone with T-W Customer Svc, it was decided that I should have another modem since they did not have the software to evaluate the Terayon modem that was installed. This was on a Friday. I could have waited and they would have brought out another modem, or I could come get it myself that same day. I went to their location and got a Toshiba PCX100. Came home installed it, and have never (in almost 4 months) of constant usage ever had another problem. I have a small home network of three computers and use a D-Link DI-701 gateway/firewall attached to a 3Com OfficeConnect Hub. 1.5 to 3 Mbps downloads. Page loads are practically instantaneous. I have seen many horror stories, but my setup is terrific. Couldn't be more pleased. After using the tweaks on dslreports.com, my download speeds tripled based on various tests.

Taylor, I had the same service from Time Warner here in Hawaii, I have never been more pleased with any service. They said it would take 21 days, and it took only 3 days, this was new to me (Prompt Service from GTE/Verizon was only a dream) I previously had DSL with GTE/Verizon and that sucked even with the static IP that I got for twice the cost. U know what you are doing with the DL701-Safe-probeless setup, and tweaking for maximum throuput. Good write up.

So far the only loss of signal was when the power went out and once when Time Warner upgraded the amplifiers in my neighborhood. When first connected my speeds were around 790kbps, now that more people are on in my area I am getting closer to 2400kbps. They whole notion of slow down is crazy. I was told that as more people got on that Time Warner would increase its available bandwidth, and they are keeping true to their word. After talking to the local fibre tech for TWC I feel confident that these speeds will continue. They have 4 "dark" fibers and can increase the current fiber by 5X. I think that this will only get better.

The worst part about the install was having to wait an extra week for a Sat. install. The techs showed up 30 minutes early (omigod!). There were 2 installers, one for the PC and a line tech. The line tech ran a second line into my house and took readings while the PC tech installed my NIC card. My computer didn't like the standard NIC card, so I was upgraded for free (it took an extra 20 minutes for the tech to realize this) to a PCI card. Outages are rare, but they have a tendancy to be doozies (average 36 hours to fix, thank god only 3 outages in the last year). Time Warner performed a CO upgrade to our network 3 months ago, and my speeds are consistant around DS1. I won't trade it for DSL if it ever becomes available in my area.

TW uses Motorola cable modems, I don't know what model with dynamic IP. I now have a nice little network going with a D-Link 704 gateway.

i live in new york and when originally looking for a broadband connection set out to find a dsl provider. after find that, due to the mostly random methods providers use to see if you're "within range" for adsl, it was not as easy and quick as i thought it would be. i was looking for the most common 608/128 ADSL connection and finally found a good company that said i was within the distance limitations. i thought i was set and prepared to experience the web closer to how it was intended, but instead i just got entangled in a different kind of web. since the dsl provider had to subcontract with covad, who in turn had to subcontract with bell atlantic (never good), who i didn't even use for local service anymore, the whole process got delayed so much that i ended up having to call support every day to try and move things along. the wait went from two weeks to three weeks to two months and still no end. unfortunately, from what i read of others, this is not an uncommon situation when it comes to the dsl install process.

after almost two months of waiting i found out that my cable service (time-warner) offers a cable modem service as well. so i decided to cancel my dsl order since it did not seem to be going anywhere and, instead, give cable a spin. i called time-warner and they set me up with an install date 8 days from when i called. they gave the technicians a two hour window for that date and if they did not keep their appointment on time i got a free month of cable modem service (very nice support). sure enough, they kept their appointment just as they said they would and 8 days later i had a cable modem up and running. this alone seemed to be worth it to get cable over dsl - great support, fast service.

but i was still not so keen on sharing my bandwidth. i was going to get dsl with a static ip, which meant no one would share any of my bandwidth or ip address. cable, on the other hand, had neither of these features. i hooked up cable under the premonition that it might get agravatingly slow at peek times. what i soon learnt was that, although it does slow down during peek hours, it is ALWAYS faster than the adsl connection i was first seeking. the dsl connection i wanted would have allowed me to download at around 30Kbps-60Kbps, not bad, but not great either. i live in queens, NY which is a pretty densly populated area, many people with cable television service. my cable modem downloads at a consistent rate of between 100Kbps and 300Kbps no matter what time of day. off peak i get around 240Kbps and can get burst rates of up to a meg a second on the download. the bottom line is that no matter how many people might happen to be on at any given point of the day, cable modems (for me at least) will always be at least 2-3 times the speed of a dsl connection. i do not know how cable speeds or dsl prices will change over time, but now that cable is consistently faster AND cheaper than dsl, i would say that you best bet would definately be to go with cable if available.

I have PacBell now...

Just dumped AT&T SlowRunner...I have PacBell now...

Good luck with SlowRunner, especially their unprofessional tech support. From tier one support to tier 3 support (only two guys in tier three and they give morons a bad name)the solution to my endless problem (dns error) was to wipe my hard drive and reload the OS. On Tuesday I asked them to take their cable modem and stick it, er, on a shelf and cancel my service. What amazes me is that they could care less about the loss of revenue.

Anyway, my PacBell circuit is 1.5 all the time. Tech support for my self install was a breeze, the guys really understood my platform and OS. I've left my system running for 5 days and have the same IP. BTW, I have no dns errors with PacBell...it was only with SlowRunner...go figure.

Re: I have PacBell now...

He's referring to the east coast Verizon, where budget DSL is 640k, not 1500k like you get in PacBell territory. Cable is often a much better deal over there.

I have AT&T RR in LA (as you did too, I assume by your IP), but it's anything but slow for me. It's always fast, and I've never had a single DNS issue. Unlike with PacBell, my IP address stays the same for months and survives reboots, and no PPPoE crapola. I haven't had any issues with their tech support either, they've always answered the phone quickly and set up service appointments without a fight. It was going to be a stopgap measure until PacBell got DSL here, but based on the consistently faster-than-PacBell DSL performance, going to stick with the cable unless something drastic happens.

Re: I got Road Runner now

you should really call the cable company and let them know your problem. i've had cable for a number of weeks already and it is still as fast as when i first got it (tweaking the registry didn't seem to affect the speed in the least). one of my friends had a similar problem, that he was slowing down at times and disconnecting often. he called and a technician came and tested his lines. turns out his cable wires on the outside lines had a loose connection. the cable guy tightened them and reset his modem and since then he not only was back to his original speeds but was (and still is) going almost twice as he did before. off peak i get a consistant download speed of around 240Kbps-260Kbps (that's around a 2mbit connection), since he got his lines tightened he's been getting around 480Kbps (almost a 4mbit connection)!
again, i DO NOT have AT&T roadrunner service, nor does pacbell service my area, in fact, i'm not even on the west coast, so it's pointless to compare those services with the roadrunner i get, which seems to be completely different. i've had no DNS problems, ip address screw ups, or firewall security issues, so it seems roadrunner is not the same everywhere.

Re: Difference

MediaOne (now AT&T Broadband)'s Road Runner won't be Road Runner for long due to the AT&T merger (their contract expires at the end of 2001). We'll most likely be switched to @home. As it stands here in LA, we don't use the rr.com network for much anyway, most of the traffic that I see goes through att.net.

With both flavors, the advertised speeds vary from region to region. Here in LA we get 1.5mbit. In other TWC areas I've seen advertised speeds of 2 or even 3mbit.

There are too many built in firewalls in Road Runner service. I can't send files to people with certain ip's while others I have no problem sending them stuff. Leave the security up to the consumers.
I'm currently looking for DSL where I can get a static ip and not have someone else determining the level of security I need.

ROAD RUNNER RULE'S DUDE !!! Yea Road runner might suck $39.00 a month out of my pocket but DSL swallows $50.00 out of your pocket. I get the same thing you get maybe even more 1000 kbps per second.

Re: RR Sucks

Have you ever tried to send files to people using AOL. RR blocks you from sending and receiving to certain IP's. This is something the consumer should be able to control. Also you can't host web pages with a dynamic ip address. I'll pay the extra for dsl, I don't want to be pampered by AT&T.

Value for money:

At the beginning of August, I had ordered SDSL service through Phoenix Networks. What a mistake! I was impressed at first by their pre-sales information, but once they got my order, all that changed. After about 4-5 weeks, I started calling to get status checks and see how things were progressing. They scheduled my outside wiring with me for the end of week 8 and the Verizon techs missed 3 appointments. I was NOT happy. The customer service people were extremely rude - one even refused to let me speak with her supervisor - and hold times were ridiculous. So on October 12, I ordered RoadRunner through AT&T Broadband (formerly MediaOne). My sales rep, Frank, was very knowledgable and set me up for an install on November 14. Well, on November 23, Frank called me and told me that he had a cancellation for the next day and wanted to know if I would be able to be around for an install. Of course I said YES!!! Everything went well. The only little hitch was my fault because I live in a condominium complex and my utility closet has the cable junction box for the entire building. The contractor that came for the install was on time and very polite, but he did not have a key to open the cable box in the utility closet. AT&T came back the next evening to open the box and remove the filter and within 60 seconds, I was online! What a difference. Their customer service reps have been extremely polite and helpful. Thanks AT&T.

Service is fairly inexpensive, too. Since I'm an AT&T cable customer, my service would have been $39.95 per month with the rented cable modem. But Circuit City has been offering the Toshiba cable modem for $250 and a $100 rebate. So I bought the modem and my service now only costs $29.95 per month.

Broadband is no DSL ......

After mental breakdown caused by Verizon DSL service after 5 months (many, many, long horros stories), I dumped them, and:

a) AT & T Broadband installed 5 days after first call to them.
b) I am actually able to connect to the internet, a feature not available with the DSL service.
c) I am a happy person.
