There was no specific speed promised, just that it would be at least 20 times faster than 56K. The tech who installed my cable modem was very helpful and knew what he was doing. I am a programmer who also builds computers so he let me install my card and took the time to explain exactly what he was doing. Not many people here have cable modem so sharing bandwidth is not a problem. That could change in the future. It cost $39 a month with and introductory offer of $19.95 a month for 6 months. The amazing thing is that I talked to someone on the phone on a friday(that person was in Canada and couldn't believe that people in Arkansas KNEW about computers) and it was in stalled on monday. That's quick! I have a static IP address. I networked my laptop to the my computer using a switch but I had to get another IP address.(unless I wanted to use my computer as a server and use a 'share' program). This is easier and it cost an extra $6.50 a month. The modem is an external Toshiba modem and I have a Linksys switch connected to it. I also installed a firewall program. Now, I have had some problems with freeze up and some crazy lines on my main computer. I haven't figured that problem out yet. All in all, Comcast(@home) was a painless experience. The speed is so nice. Transmission loss really bothers me and I wonder if that is just a "cable" thing. I have heard so many horror stories about DSL here that I don't know if I would use them. I would reccomend @home over DSL at this point. I can't really say too much about the tech help. I have figured out most of my problems myself but they do give you a number. here is my update: I have since moved to another zipcode (72205) The installation took longer than the first time. There is a problem with me living in an apartment. They had to split off the cable instead of installing a dedicated line. The modem wouldn't sync for 10 days. It was very frustrating. However, the modem is synced now and my speeds are decent. There still is transmission loss at times but for the most part, I am happy with the service. It beats 56K!!! I have a dynamic IP address and a RCA cable modem. My speeds average around 2800. I would still reccomend cable over DSL at this time. DSL wanted a 12 month contract and could not gaurantee over 768/384. The techs are helpful, they just don't know too much about what they are doing. Tweaking does help. All in all, I must say that I am happy with the service. I have not networked anything yet. My opinion may change after that. This service is very new to Little Rock. It is going to take them a while to get it together. Like I have already said, we got capped with comcast bought out @home. I am not as happy with my cable but it is acceptable. I was getting blazing fast speeds and now they are just OK. The upload is horrible. I no longer have a static IP but it doesn't change everytime. I like cable but I am not as happy as I was about it. Since comcast has 'uncapped' our download speeds, the connection is better. We get a 3.5 download and 256 upload. Sharing bandwidth has not been a problem. I am happy with my comcast cable. It does have a few drawbacks but it is 10 times better than DSL. Go Comcast Just a quick update. My speed has increased so it is very nice. They said that I had a dynamic IP address but I have had the same IP address the whole time. I have no complaints about Comcast. Service has been very good. When I call I get great service. I would reccomend Comcast to anyone in this area. I have stopped building computers and bought a DELL. The computer is working fine. Cable Modem RoutersFor those of you using a cable modem router, there is a built in fire wall. Using another firewall will definitely slow your connection.

Re: Cable Modem RoutersI appreciate the advice but I am using a switch not a router. I know that the router has a firewall installed. I am new to 'networking'. If I had to do all over again I would use the router. (it doesn't cost that much more) Thanks again for the comment.

ummmI'm wondering why you bought another IP "just to share the same speed?" when all you had to do was install a router....and get the same results! i've had three PC's and a laptop that i bring home from work running together on my @home service thanks to a router and a hub. And yes, i know @home does not care for this, but i have had great service with RARE interruptions for almost two years.

Re: ummmthanks for the suggestion. If I had to do again I would use the router instead of a switch. I am not a 'network' person... just learning that. I am a programmer. Oh well. It is not a permanent situation but I did enjoy getting it to work even though I did have to get another IP address. I am not paying extra for the static IP address. Live and learn...

WHAT PART OF LITTLE ROCK DO U LIVE IN?I live next to UALR and i cant get comcast to get off their butts to ready my neighborhood. the woman from comcast online told me that "apartment complexes are last priority."
WTF??
it is pathetic how badly comcast has been beaten to market here by dsl (3 years) and they still wont get off their lazy butts.

Re: WHAT PART OF LITTLE ROCK DO U LIVE IN?I have to agree with you about how bad Comcast was beaten in the Little Rock market and I don't think it would be happening this soon had the city not threatened to build it's own cable service. I expected cable access to be available in Little Rock 2 or 3 years earlier than this. Both DSL and cable access will be available in my neighborhood soon, but, as you might expect, DSL will be available first. So, out of respect for Southwestern Bell getting it here sooner I'm going to start out with DSL. Now Comcast will have to provide some sort of incentive if they wish for me to switch some time in the future and they only have themselves to blame for losing me as a customer.

What tweaks did you do? My @Home sucks.I don't know what you did to get things so great, but my @Home service in Little Rock stinks.
I was installed on 4/27. The installation seemingly went well. They put in a Toshiba 1100 DOCSIS modem. Previously, I was a SWBell ADSL in another neighborhood. I wish I could get that service now.
My old ADSL connection was a rock-solid 1500Kbps maximum rate. Now I'm having to deal with 200Kbps max, with 100Kbps being more typical.
@Home doesn't give a damn about my connection speed as long as its 80Kbps or better. There are only 30 people on my node and still I have trouble.
I'm already fed up with this and will get ADSL as soon as it becomes available again. Until then, I'll bug their customer service daily.
Anyone here know if I can do anything to the modem or computer to fix this? I've tweaked my computers for maximum speed for ADSL, so I don't think I need to modify them for @Home.

ARG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I am scheduled to get my comcast@home installed on the 6/25th, but i am already unhappy with comcast. First of all, 3 years after adsl was available, i'm finally getting cable modems AVAILABLE to me. Second of all, before i even get it installed...comcast decides to raise the price of the service by 5 dollars. Now i'll be paying 45 dollars instead of the 39.99 (32.95 plus 7 dollar modem rental) that was advertised to me so many times by customer service. To further aggravate me, comcast's site says it will be capped at 128k upload. wtf? to be paying about 10 to 15 dollars more than most other people for cable modem service around the country (most people i see are paying 29.99 for cable modem service thru various providers), i expect to be getting the @home nationwide policy cap of 256k. there is NO NEED to be capped at 128k in such a small market as LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS, especially this late in the game. Being 3 years late and being able to watch the growing pains of other markets, surely they could've used that time more constructively and upgraded their system as to not cap at 1.5 mb down and 128k up. capping at 1.5 down when other @home markets are capped at 3mb down means one or 2 things---they plan on OVERSUBSCRIBING THEIR NODES or NEVER BUILT FOR DEMAND---OR BOTH.
I am grossly disappointed with comcast. Their service better be damn worth every dollar if i'm gonna keep paying them after the first 2 introductory months at 9.95. I dont know about u guys, but 45 dollars a month seems a bit much, especially when they cant even say that they are faster than dsl anymore. my least comes up in a few months and i will be more than happy to move to a location close to a SWBell CO where i can sign onto their 1.6-6mb/384K DEDICATED bandwidth package.
now that's REAL bandwidth folks..not castrated cable modem technology.
i envy all u other guys out there on @home and other cable modem services in BIG cities like NEW YORK and Los ANGELES pulling down more than 1.5mb down and 128k up. you'd think population would be on the side of us small town folks when it comes to cable modem speeds...guess not.

same old story since 8 months ago when i first called comcast. tech claims that when he puts in the work order it'll get done in about 2 days...

comcast sucks goat nuts. stay away from them at all costs.
Im gathering information about a class action lawsuit against comcast here for false advertising, fraud and everything else. they've advertisted that comcast@home was available for the past 5-6 months on tv and i cant get it. also in their commercial "the fastest connection to games" however i bet when i call them about high ping times they'll dismiss it and say "as long as u can still get on the internet there's no problem with your service"

Comcast doesn't care about Little Rock Oh how I wish Little Rock would have booted Comcast or at least started an independent service that actually gave a flying flip about Little Rock. Three months ago I received a pamphlet in my mail telling me @Home service was available in my area. I called Comcast sales rep and was informed they don't know how or why I received the pamphlet because @home was not available in my area (Sherwood - suburb of Little Rock). They told me to check back next month and everything would be ready. I waited a month debating on cable or DSL. I called comcast Sales rep a month later and was told that they had some additional line testing to do in my area but would go ahead and put my order through and to expect service in about two weeks. I called almost every other day to check my order. Everything was fine up until the day the Service Tech was scheduled to come to my home. I had to call them when the tech missed his appointed time slot. Then and only then was I informed that @home was not available in my are, they don't know who did or why they put the order through. I explained that not only one person had verified my order but more than a half dozen or so had such. Now, after waiting two months and two weeks, I'm told (after they were already supposed to be at my home) that @home would not be available in my area until Sept-Oct. WTF?? Needless to say, I now have a good 1250down/198up thru SwBell DSL. I'm also at the cutoff radius for DSL service in my area but still get workable speeds. People I know around town had superfast cable access at first but that has slowly dwindled down to around my speeds unless they live next door to one of the substations. Comcast may be a good service elsewhere in the country, but not in Little Rock. They are a bunch of untrained apathetic button pushes who don't give one flip about their customers. They are just trained to take money and then tell you you're up a dark colored, foul smelling, thick consistency Creek. I could sell 'em bunch of Dogs to do that - least they would be friendlier. (Last statement does not apply to the service call techs - they have always been well mannered, caring, and generally know more than their bosses) If anyone from comcast would like to contact me - feel free! summit@apollosystems.net

ConwayCorp is really rocking nowConwayCorp just completed a big upgrade here. I went from 1500 kbps (down) to around 5000 kbps (down) at ConwayCorp's speed tester on their home page (www.conwaycorp.net). But my speed tests here (using LinkLine) usually indicate about 2500 down and 650 up. I used a registry tweak from www.speedguide.net that really helped out. BTW, I bought my modem (3com HomeConnect) from ConwayCorp for $199.95 and my "no contract" monthly is only $24.95!!! It is worth moving to Conway for, besides all of Conway's many other charms.

[Was @Home when got back in 1999 - Now Comcast] Install took place about 10 days after ordering via their web site. Installation was smooth, all they did was split my existing cable and set the tcp/ip etc. settings in Windows. They didn't install any software, but I was sure to tell them I didn't want anything they offered. They said the modem could take up to an hour to synchronize, and they left. Well, hours went by, and no go. So I finally called, and the rep said he'll check stuff there and to call back the next day if it didn't sync yet. Still no go, so he schedules a service call that's 10 days later because they're so understaffed! So there sits the modem blinking, but "luckily" for only 6 days, as this very nice lady rep calls around 6 pm to ask if I still had a problem (was dinner time, but no big deal in this case hehe). And problem solved... The culprit was the installer told them the wrong modem serial number when he called to get it activated! He read one digit wrong. Well, as you can imagine, it was a tough 6 days, thinking "why didn't the installer test the cable line quality" because he didn't, etc. etc. And the techs at the office should have known better, being a brand new install, that a wrong serial number could have been a possibility. Well, now they know better, I HOPE. ('Days from order to success' would have been 10 days instead of 16 if they didn't make that stupid mistake.) Anyway, it was a static IP, but later was forced to change to dynamic. The service rocks most of the time. It does go out now and then, sometimes for 30 seconds, sometimes for 5 hours, but rarely (some days are "bad" in terms of annoying mini-outages, but never had a very serious outage time other than one in almost a year now). Things were pretty cool for six months, then there was this major problem that caused the modem to not sync anymore, the cause having been their attempt to send out a modem update that backfired on modems that had some bad revision of the firmware (so they said). So after calling about the problem, it took 16 days for that service call! (modem was replaced) Finally, just recently my area had a pathetic cap on upload speed implemented, which SUCKS BIGTIME! Upload speed is no better than ISDN now, and terrible compared to same-priced DSL. Now while uploading, web browsing stalls a bit because the upload stream is maxed out at the time. Luckily download speed remains decent, but that has been seriously capped now as well. To further take away service value, newsgroup access is now pathetic with a 1gb a MONTH limit! Value to cost ratio, hello?!!! Anyway, Comcast is still definitely worth the money because it's simply superior to trying to do anything on 56K or worse anymore, that's for sure. [AS OF 7/05] Over time they increased speeds to much better value (competition?), and newsgroups are now 2gb a month. [AS OF 6/08] Since last update, bought own modem to get rid of the rental fee to reduce the charge by $3 (was $42.95, went to $39.95). Later they raised the normal price to $42.95. A while later I added $10 for the increased speed tier (double the download and much better upload). Since then Comcast has been pressured by competition and increased the speeds further on all tiers, including implementing "powerboost" or "blast!" (or whatever it's called by the time I finish writing -lol). Newsgroups are still 2gb a month, but now especially pathetic if go over because they seem to lock you out for two months instead of resetting on the next month! P2P limitationAlot of cable companies are capping both download and upload speeds of "known" P2P "abusers". This is my interpretation. If the cable company THINKS you are P2Ping excessively (they make this determination)then they are capping you. Nice right? And I thought that was the purpose of paying for cable internet.

With my DSL connection I am always on, hardly never down. With AT&T DSL I am at a consistant 2.8+ mbps. Also I can get in touch with tech support and within less 5 minutes I am talking to a human being. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good, but they try hard. I won't be changing ISP's any time soon. I love DSL!!! I just want a faster connection and they don't have the faster connections in my area yet. P.S. I tried Verizon DSL in Baltimore City and I'd rather pull out my teeth without novicane. After installing 2 other cable modems with Linksys Routers in other people's homes, I wanted it for myself. Finally moved out to an area served with @home service. Kind of wary about getting it with all the @home debacle but went ahead anyway. Ordered a self install kit and waited..and waited. Got impatient and bought a Motorola Surf Board. It took an extra day to use it because they had to re-provision the account. Got it working and speeds are great. Got a 2.5 Mbit reading just now. Overall, let's see what Comcast does but right now I am happy. Verizon DSL was no compitition. UPDATE: Email has issues. Sometimes it doesn't recognize an automated logon that works minutes before. Email not being deleted of of server even though email program (Eudora) is set to delete off of server. Tech support no help. Have issue with network traffic but tech support unwilling to help. With recent issues about Comcast kicing off users for unknown limits, I have little confidence in this company. UPDATE (8/14/05): Comcast works well when it does. Still only getting speeds of 2.1 Mbps with a Motorola SB4100 with no answers from tech support (they claim the 4100 is supported.) I should be getting at least 4Mbps. Add to that that newsgroup access is lmited to 2GB, there is little value in this service compared to the local Verizon DSL (if you can get it.) UPDATE (12/12/07) After another round of price hikes, Comcast is going bye bye. member for 21.6 years, 5166 visits, last login: 5.7 years ago updated 14.3 years ago

9/4/07: Howdy all. I am still with Cox for Internet as well as cable TV and phone. I am really happy with my services. They will have to pry my DVR from cold, dead fingers! I don't know how I lived without it. I currently have three PC's connected to my modem. I use an SMC Barricade router as it has a built print server that is really cool. I have two PC's wireless and the 3rd hard-wired. I occaissionally connect a 4th laptop wirelessly as the need arises. I use a Moto 5101 modem and am connected to the Premier level. I consistently get above the 12M downstream speed advertised due to powerboost. I am also playing around with a NetGear media center. I can stream video to my big screen TV, but the lag is pretty bad for trying to watch a movie streaming from the Net. Anyway, that is all for now. 12/2/04: It'sbeen awhile since I last updated this... I am now using Cox Premier service. My downloads are mostly close to the 5M cap. I find if I reboot the modem when tests show slow speeds, it bounces back. I mainly have it for the increased upstream of 768k v 512k on Preferred. My son is gamer on his PC and XBox. He loves the faster upstream. I still recommend Cox as the way to go. BTW.. how do I change this review from @Home to cox.net? Do I have to submit a completely new review? I noticed that the DSL reviews have a drop down menu for ILECs and CLECs. Why not the same for cable companies? 2/10/03: Still getting great speeds. This beats the heck out of dialup anyday! If you want speed and always on service..this is it. 1/25/02: Thought I would do an update. I am now on Cox High Speed Internet service. My speeds are in the 2-2.5Mbps downstream and 230-250k up range. I cannot complain. The transition from the @Home net went very smooth. Last night I was on the @Home network and this morning it was on cox.net. I never had any downtime. The installer was really good. Had me up and running in about 1 hour. I managed to get my network going and now run 3 PC's off the 1 modem. Speeds have been good and I can't complain. 7/3/01 ... they must have done something to my downstream. I am now getting 2Mbps on a regular basis. I have nothing to complain about! 10/8/01 .... They have converted me over to 2-way service. Downstream is still 2Mbps+ but now my upstream is at 256k! I am no longer tying my phone line up. The process was simple. They notified me via email that my area was ready for 2-way. I went to website and reset my modem. It disconnected and came up 2-way and I was able to disconnect the phone line. Wee-Haaaaa! 9/17/03... I can't believe it's been so long since I updated this. My opinon has not changed. Still love the service. I haven't had the need to call for suporrt in a long time. Two thumbs and a big toe up! member for 20.9 years, 5995 visits, last login: 4.3 years ago updated 14.6 years ago

Watch Out For Lan City ModemI've had a lot of issues with @home for about 6 months, every since the code red virus came out. @home was infected with it. Every since then I had lost my connection every single day for a couple of hours, and had severe intermittent latency and packet loss. Everytime a tech would come out, obviously their would be nothing wrong at that moment. But just lost my connection again for a whole day. While talking to tech support, he asked me what modem I have. LanCity I said. He said that modem sucks. Ive had it for 3 years. Speaking to the tech that came out, cause the modem finally died, he said, yeah your modem really sucks. He said it has a small band width (not sure what he meant by that) and a life span of 6 months. So, since Ive been leasing my modem, I got kinda pissed that through all times I was on the phone to tech support, and all the times Ive had technicians come out to see why I keep losing my connection, none of them informed me I had a questionable modem. I now have a SURFBOARD 3100 cable modem and it rocks. The moral of the story is always ask about the quality of your modem, and make sure it isn't a LanCity.

Must be nice....Where in Glendale are you at? I just set my Cox@home up for 2 way service last week from the Express service. And wow, it worked for 3 whole hours before crapping out on me...now it's been over a week and it's still messed up. I get connection interruptions every 2 seconds to 5 minutes...Every time I call I get the same story "server problems, our techs are on it". That's pretty crappy that it can't be fixed in this amount of time. I'm only gonna call one more time, Friday...and if it's not fixed by then, I'm probably getting rid of @home, nothing but frustration so far.

You must not live in ChandlerIve gone the 6 months of latency in the Chandler area, it took them 4 months to acknowlege that they are aware of the problem. After two months of them acknowleging the problem, it still hasnt been resolved, and no one can give me a straight answer. Ive recently canceled my service and went DSL. It was hard letting go of my cable because I had 4 good years with them, but Ive been getting the run around for half a year. If your in a good area, then I can see how great the cable can be, but Im very disappointed in Cox for the service theyve provided me for the last 6 months. And I know Im not the only one in the Chandler area that has the problem. Check out my line packet test. Its been like this for 6 months.

if u get that with cox, consider urself luckyI have cox in my Fairfax, Virginia home. It sucks. It often gets agonizingly slow. It wasnt that great when i got it, but after code red, it never really recovered. if you get great speeds and love ur cable provider, you are lucky, dont take it forgranted. but if the cable internet trend keeps going as is, dont expect to ahve those great speeds for long.

I was suprised that the system was only down for about 2 days, I thought we would be in limbo for about 1 month or so. So far the service and quality have been good, except for the initial installation, the tech did not route a "drip loop" at the external connection and water filled the splitter cutting download time in half. member for 20.4 years, 992 visits, last login: 1.5 years ago updated 14.6 years ago

My connection is horribleI loved my @home until At&t took over and now I feel like I have a Dial-up connection. It sometimes takes 2 minutes for a page to load, some don't even load at all we were shutdown for 2 weeks and still can't reach some sites. We have set everything up 3 times now and still have problems. I have no problems downloading files but surfing the net is ridiculous. I loved my @home connection, but hate my ATTBI.com connection. I just wish someone would setup a faster connection in seattle over 1.5mb, we were used to never lower than 3mb now we are lucky to get over 1mb.

I ordered the DSL Extreme 3.0 package from AT&T. I went the self-install route. I chose this package because it included the home shared access feature and free wi-fi access on the road. I ordered on a Friday and was up and working on the following Tuesday. I received the Westell 327W Wireless gateway router, 3 in-line filters, 1 wall filter and 1 in-line splitter. member for 21.5 years, 162 visits, last login: 7.3 years ago updated 14.6 years ago

FAST Connection, When it works, most of the time it doesn't Go's Down a lot of times, must be on a oversold node Not bad for the price, not really worth what I pay every month

Down Time needs to be addressed, could be an oversold node in my area, and more upload speed would be nice, can't wait till my city will ever get FIOS, but our QWEST DSL has even worst service............and that's a real shame too member for 21.2 years, 4523 visits, last login: 9.5 years ago updated 15.3 years ago

Called, had TV cable installed in a day or two. Less than a week to have the cable internet access installed. Did the configuration of my router, PC and access myself. Was up and running the same day the cable internet service had been installed. Totally painless. @home good for nowI too was gifted with high speed both ways, until i received the dreaded "Were capping your upload e-mail" then a few weeks later the bottlenecks started and for the past 3 months have been faced with severe slow speeds and packet loss. between high usage times it gets real slow . one good point is that if i get on in the early am it is super fast. but after 3pm to 12a it is actually slower then a 56k modem. It is a definite bottleneck which they are fixing"At least that is what i am told" . good luck. keep your diary up to date. you will need it to e-mail them to prove your point. I would also recommend tracert diary also to there servers.
