simple to connect and setup - UL speed pretty consistent.
Need some tweaking, getting about 70% of DL speed

--------------------------------------

Well I've been a happy customer of Ntelos DSL for 3 years, but recent experience during online game play, all my clan mates began complaining of me lagging - enven though I was pretty much 90% of advertized speeds... okay ping times...

Then I was made aware that across town that Verizon was offering faster DSL speeds for only $30/month (for 1.5mb/384k) compared to $50/month (768k/768k) only available in my area. So I began doing some research to see if there was another DSL provider that I could get faster speeds from... but was unsuccessful.

A year ago or so the local cable company laid in cable into my relatively new subdivision, so I went investigating to see who the provider was. Since I've had DirecTV since we moved into our house (because there was no cable here 6 years ago), I wasn't interested in cable TV. I found that Adelphia was the provider. I signed up on their website and as promised 2 days later an Adelphia rep called me to say that they had forwarded my request to the local office for a site survey and that they would contact me to make an installation appointment.

So about 2 weeks later I get a call saying that the site survey was complete and they could come out and install the cable whenever I was next available to be at the house. So I took an afternoon off and met with the installer. He ran the cable from the underground box to my house and just laid the cable above ground and said the cable burial crew will come out at a later date to bury the cable. I had bought a couple of Cable diplexers for him to use, because my house was already wired for cable and I was using the cable to run my sat dishes (I've got the triple-LNB for my HD DirecTV and also an internationl DBS) so I needed to have the cable modem share the same cable in my house with my Dish signals. He said he's never used them and didn't know if they would work. So I figured if it doesn't work I'll just have to run new cable to my dish later on. But all worked well with the diplexers.

I'm consistently getting 2.9m down and 500k up... so it looks like I need some tweaking to see if I can get closer to the advertized 4mb down of their premier service. I'm wondering if I still need a cable splitter even though I'm not using the video portion of their signal, because I've heard that a few people have improved performance due to the filtering built into the splitter. I wasn't given a splitter so I may just go and purchase one, to see if it makes a difference, and I'll update here accordingly.

I notice some higher ping times to servers on the west coast, but over all I'm pretty happy with the service...much much faster download for only a few$ more than my previous DSL.

If I was to do one thing differently I would have gone into Bestbuy or Circuit and activiated with them because then you can get a cable modem for free... as for now I'm renting for $3/month until I decide to go and buy one for my own.

-------------------------

---Update Nov 15th----

Been working great so far, think I need to get a splitter as my download speed hovers around 2-3MB down instead of the advertized 4MB. The upload speed is very consistent @ 500kb. Socom2 and Halo2 work great with my new service. I have just called to have my DSL with Ntelos disconnected.

The ONLY problem I had was when they buried the cable at my house last Tuesday, the digger cut my phone line so my house was without a phone for an entire day. Had to have Ntelos come out and run a new line, which they will need to bury at a later date, hopefully they won't cut my CABLE!! And I hope that Ntelos doesn't charge me for Adelphia's contractor or I'll have to drive over to the Adelphia office.

Strange that I can't call the local Adelphia office, since they 'don't have a phone#' according to the Adelphia toll free number.

Modem for Powerlink

When you do buy a modem, be sure to get a Motorola SB-5100. Toshiba modems that best buy sells won't hold the block synch. I got an SB-5100 and have not been dropped off line in about a year. I am also getting downloads consistently in the 5-6mb range and uploads of 600k.

with the prem service its advertised up to 4megs. Sometimes you will only see about 3. Depending on people in the area. But as you noticed you will see the 500k+ upload 24/7.

i've had adelphia cable for almost 3 years now & i can count any outages on one hand. i ordered the premiere package & have never looked back. speed is addictive. i test often and am consistently around 7,000kbits down. upload is also great and steady at around 750-800kbits going up.

i've used tech support a few times and so far everyone at adelph i've encountered has been friendly and attentive and, best of all, they were AMERICANS who i could understand clearly. wait time for support last time i called was less than 5 mins.

i really have no complaints and would recommend adelph to anyone in my area. i live in hollywood hills west, near the fairfax/hollywood blvd. cross. i'm only hoping that TW doesn't screw these halcyon days up when they take over.

i wanted to post this review because when everything works, people take it for granted & don't say anything. it's only when things don't work that people or a company hear rants about it. so i think it's just as important to tell people when they're doing things well. good job, adelph. i will stick with you guys.

__________________________________________________________________
UPDATE FOR OCT. 3, 2006

well things are starting to go wacky. 3 and half weeks ago i called adelph. to find out why my DL speed started dropping consistently. after running tests and confirming it wasn't my modem, tier 2 informed me that TW hadn't taken things over yet, but said they would be re-routing things for some time to come. the tech said it's likely once everything is settled, my bandwidth should explode beyond what i was getting before.

i don't know if i'll have the patience for it. i haven't seen my DL speed exceed 3,000kb once in the last 3 weeks. in fact, most of the times i test it's around 1,500kbps. before all this, i never recall seeing my speed anywhere but 6,000 + range. so now its time to call again & either switch plans or demand action, because i'm not paying premiere price for this crap. all my fears regarding TW's takeover are slowly being confirmed- 4 years of great service down the crapper. i guess i should expect it from a co. that calls it's broadband service "road runner." what a joke. but i hope i'm proven wrong about them. i will update this again soon.

____________________________________________________________________
UPDATE FOR OCT 9 2006

things have stabilized a bit. after bottoming out there for awhile, speeds have gradually improved over the last week. i'm testing a few times a day, every day, and have seen my full speeds restored during off-peak hours. i'm still seeing drops down to 4,000k consistently between 5-9 pm every night though. but that's good enough to keep me in a holding pattern. frankly i'm terrified of switching isp's for the sheer headache of it, so i'll at least give TW a shot. i was somewhat glad to read in PC World that TW ranked 3rd in the nation as a broadband provider, based on PC World's readers report cards.

interestingly, i've noticed my upload speeds now are routinely pushing 1MB, which i will not argue with. i'll update this again when things get better or worse.

___________________________________________________________________
UPDATE 9-14-2008

well, just to close this thread for good, i wanted to report that things with TW now have gone just as well or better than w/Adelphia. service has continued to be rock solid and i've since upgraded to TW voip, which has also proven great and dependable. please note my mo. cost includes cable, unlimited voip and premier-tier internet.

i also would like to add the TW customer service has proven better than Adelphia's was, both for billing and tech issues.

Adelphia does well

I have to agree.
I've had the 'standard' HSI package for about 1 1/2 years and other than initial glitches for the first month or so, some of them my fault, I've been very satisfied. My testing consistently produces 3000+ down and 250-400+ up.
For the package price with TV it's a great deal.
My only problem seems to be with my Netgear wireless router MRB14v2, which is being used with cable connections, loosing the connection. Still working on that problem.

Yes, things are a little wacky lately

Dear lithiumnitro,

I have to agree that I was totally spoiled by the Adelphia service. I'm in Santa Monica and have standard HSI. I got about 4800 down and 500 up consistently. On the 3rd there was a major glitch in the evening when upstream speeds were as low as 2kbps (!) as measured by www.testmy.net. When I called tech support, a very earnest but clueless tech tried to get me to delete my temporary Internet files in IE. "But I don't use IE," I told her repeatedly. "That can slow down your computer," she kept telling me. She didn't get it, though I told her several times, that I was measuring network speed, not the speed of my computer. The next morning, everything was fine, and two different techs denied all knowledge of any glitches the night before.
This doesn't give me a good feeling about Time Warner. But I'm a reporter who covers Internet technology. I'll try to buttonhole their CTO at the next cable convention.

With disregard to the price, the installation was easy, as well as the connection reliability. I gave it 4 due to the fact that it HAS gone down once before, that's about it. It's on 24/7, never disconnects, or anything. I am currently having a packet loss problem, but that's not adelphia's fault.

Tech support is o.k, but i usually call when something messes up big, and Teer1 INSISTS on trying to solve my problem when i know they can't. I've called twice about issues, and insisted to speak to Teer2, but Teer1 is very stubborn.

Adelphia is a great isp, with me getting about 4mbps down, 200kbps up.. who can argue? The cap is set at 3mbps, but true enough, i get 4mbps down, every time.

Tier1->Tier2

The reason Tier1 is stubborn is due to the fact they are obligated to trouble shoot your issue first, before they are able to transfer the call to a Tier2 agent. It is against Adelphia's company policy to forward a call to a Tier2 agent automatically, unless you had been talking to Tier2 and got disconnected, or you have called 3 times in 1 week with the same problem that cannot be resolved.

Also you shouldn't complain at ALL about your service speed. Your right it is capped at 3 MB down, 256KB up.. if your getting 4MB down and 200 KB up there is NO reason to complain. About the price, I think no matter what company you go with whether it be internet, TV, phone, gas, electric, etc. prices do go up from time to time. Adelphia may change prices more frequently then other companys, but it's going to be hard to find a more reliable and faster service then Power Link

Re: Tier1->Tier2

Do what I do...I call up adelphia, let them I was suffering from poor speeds. So I set up a layer 2 Bridge to do some packet analysis. In doing so, I discovered that a router...(Router's IP I use 67.23.83.38) is blasting you with IGMP packets, and a quick estimate tells you that this is sucking up 5-10% of your bandwidth. This typically gets me up to tier 2 right away. Interesting enough, the above problem is true, Adelphia is too stubborn to figure it out, nor take some suggestions from their customers. They will typically take down the info than ask if their is anything else they can help you with, that is when I tell them the other reason why I called.

Since last review, still working great. Very few outages, consistent speeds always at least 1mb/second. Email is all right. Sometimes I do get authentication errors but trying again seems to resolve it. I only wish they would release their web based email, which was supposed to already, be rolled out this past summer.

Very happy with service over all. I don't do much online gaming. I did try unreal tournament a few times and I was able to connect to most servers with very little latency. I do use the upload for my web sites and I find it satisfactory as well. Sure it could be faster, but for the price, I can't complain.

Update 3/26/03

Everything is still perfect. I know own a 2nd PC and have the connection routed to both PC's. Everything works better than expected. Email is fine, I still prefer Outlook as my client although the web based system works fine as well.

TV reception is great, I am happy with the channel lineup. I would like to see VOD come to the Buffalo area though.

Update 9/27/03

Everything seems the same. Still a great connection. Since last updateing, I can't recall when the service was down. I do recall a slight slowdown a few months ago but that has since been resolved. Email is working fine as well.

I always have and continue to recomend powerlink to anyone.

Update 3/19/04

I have since moved to a new address around Jully 03. The transfer of powerlink/digital cable was problem free. I kept my same modem and box. Called in advanced. When I went to the new house, simply connected digial box and modem. Both sync'd up and were ready to go. Speed and latency at this new house are fantastic. Same as my old apartment. The new house is in Cheektowaga.

Since my last review, Adelphia has also raised it's upload from 128 to 256kbps while keeping the price the same. Email has also been great. Adelphia also uses giganews for there news service.

Currently, I am thinking or getting Vonage and Adelphia's DVR.

Update 10/11/04

I have had Vonage since August. I haven’t had any Adelphia related problems with it. It worked great. I’m currently porting my Verizon number over and plan to cancel Verizon my number is transferred.

I also purchased Adelphia's DVR service which has been working great.

Powerlink is rock solid as usual. Still on the 3000/256 caps.

Adelphia is starting to roll out VOD with out a price increase. Looking forward to that.

Update 04/25/05

Performance is simply awesome. We've recently had both the upload and download increased at no cost. As well as mailbox size inceases.

The cable TV side is a bit pricey IMO. With Verizon soon to be offering naked DSL, I may be switching over just to find a cheaper rate. Performance has always been rock solid with very little down time.

My Vonage connection works great as well as my wired/wireless network.

I also have the DVR which is pretty cool. Looking forward to VOD as well.

Update 03/13/07
Still same performance. Very few outages, great speeds, latency, DNS, etc.
Time Warner absorbed Adelphia in my area but I have yet to be migrated over. Vonage still working great, now have pretty good high-def line up as wel as VOD. Price is high which is my only complaint. I'm currently looking into other cheaper solutions but this has nothing to do with performance, only price.

Update 02/18/07
Moved across town to a new house. Had to cancel service and sign up again. I was not allowed to transfer for some reason and they couldn't get a tech out for 10 days. (even though the previous owner had TW server.

When the tech came, he plugged the cable modem in and then cut a cable drop in the basement. I did not tell him to cut this cable. Wiring inside the house is mine. I was going to put all the network gear in the basement via this drop and now was not able to. When I called to compain, the first girl I spoke to apologized and scheduled a tech for a week away and said it would be free since the tech cut the line without my permission. When the date came, the tech was a no show. Called again and this tech said no work order was ever put in, so it appears the previous girl was just telling me what I wanted to hear so I'd get off the phone. This tech told me there would be a fee of $45 to run the line again, even though it was cut without my permission or knowledge. I was irate, asked to speak to manager and was denied. I eventually hung up on him. I then went outside opened my cable feed (just a weather resistant splitter) and run my own drop to my house (I have all the stripping tools/equipment) using quad shield RG6 cable with compression connectors.

All is well and I have my network system back in the basement.

The price is just way too expense. I've since downgraded to the lowest speed and no premium channels. FIOS is in the area and once becomes available, I hope that will bring lower prices. The price I list in my review is for HSI/Dig TV/DVR

All in all, the service is fine, I'm happy with the channel line up and internet speed/quality. Just the customer service and pricing is bad.

Hmmm, are you sure?

Dear Sir,
Are you positive that you get speeds like that with uptime that you describe? Perhaps you have an industrial/commercial package, because Adelphia provides 256Kb modems for their service. In addition, the speeds and uptime in my area (14043 as well; Depew) are horrible!

I heard that those who get directed through the Lancaster grid get good speeds, but my connection runs through Lackawanna. How about yours?

Up time for me is generly good. I have had maybe two 1 to 3 hour outages since January. It will also go out a few times a monmth for maybe a minuet or two at a time. So over all, it has not been a bad deal for me.

BOTTOM LINE

Firstly there's no difference in Residential & Business Packages ( bandwidth wise ) Besides small business plus ( $129.00 / month ) you'll get a static IP ..so you'll get the same lag...but just with the same IP =)..

Also if your running a business off a residential package ...re-read your TOS agreement you signed when you got it installed.. FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY..so go go in a small room ...fart & smell it cause your not getting credit for your business loosing money cause the internet was down..get the business package..ALSO if your such a bill gates with your " home business " GET A RELIABLE T1 LINE.. if you don't like the service.. CHANGE IT .. remember there's no contract ... your free to change whenever you want =)

I was intially concerned about using Adelphia. I read up on them and their netork/routing/financial problems made me hesitant to even sign up with them. Finding that DSL is not available here and being unsure of the phone line quality..i signed up for the cable modem service. I am not calling it broadband for a reason which i will detail in a bit. The service has been rock solid..i have to give them credit for that. However i found out through checking the ip address that the network is not Adelphia's but AT&T's. Later when i started a 100 meg download using getright and 10 segments(equivalent to downloading 10 files from 10 different locations at the same time) I noticed my speeds were much lower than what i had with comcast. I fired up netpersec and noticed the average never went above 500 kbps and spiked rearely went above 600 kbps. I got concerned that there maybe a technical issue so i called tech suport. The resonse to my question was ,"Be glad it is that fast". what? I called back and was told that there is a cap of 500kpbs on the modem which is 1/3 the speed i was getting with comcast and that Adelphia only owns the subscribers in this area not the network. Lovely. I did some more research and found that Adelphia's network is oversold to an extreme and that their financial problems are only getting worse. I called my local internet manager and was told our area will be getting migrated to Adelphia's network this month.

Update: The migration is complete and things are much better....I constituently get 3 megs down and around 100k up. The connection has been rock solid which is something i could not say for Comcast in Baltimore. I cannot say anything about if tech support has changed since i have not had to call them. So far the new e-mail system seems to be working much better than the old one too..

UPDATE: 10/09/03

Verizon online dsl is here now and i am making the jump..i am getting full 1.5/128 with adelphia i was getting 3/70. Cost is the main factor..i can live with 1.5 down..the extra upload of my DSL is great. It has been good Adelphia in terms of internet..:) Next to go will be cable when i get my dish..:)

Here in Loudoun County (Northern Virginia) we had no broadband options untill Adelphia offered PowerLink 4 years ago. I would have gone DSL or wireless had they been available as I was desperate for anything faster than 56k. Those options are now available, but, I'm staying with Adelphia as I like the cable reliabilty and the normally superior speeds (tonight I have 6281download and 815 upload) that blaze! I use T-1 connection at work that is very good, but when I get home I can see the difference, definately. I was happy with the regulay HSI, BUT, just switched to the Premium with a claim 6000 down & 786 down and I'm getting speeds in excess of claimed speed !! Yaaa!! I love it!

The switch-over to Premium happened in 30 minutes after calling tech-support and only costs me an additional $17 per month. I get discounted HSI regular $20.39 (because I use Adelphia full package cable TV) + the $17 = $37.39.. not bad for superior and ultra fast Internet Access. I really hope any sale of the Adelphia HSI to Time/Warner or whoever doesn't diminish the excellant service I've been getting. T/W did quite a job on AOL (not my favorite) ,but, they sure did a number on them.

Tech support has been very good on the couple of times I've needed it, so, overall I'm impressed. I initially wanted to do a self-hookup, but it wasn't available so the company allowed me free installion. I leased a cable modem for the first 6 months but found out that buying my own was more cost efficient. I now own a Motorola Surfboard SB4220 that can handle the new 2.0 cable standard and am pleased with the whole experience.

Overall, I do recommend Adelphia.

Re: Yo

We are going to move to a location which Adelphia is a provider. What kind of service can we expect? Should we use other options (satalite)? How often and how long are these outages?

Thanks

Re: Yo

Satellite is bad.

It is expensive to install ($600)
Expensive monthly charges ($70/months on 1 year contract)
They don't offer consolidated billing or discounts if you have dish TV

there is at least 600 ms of latency one way making the service unusable for VoIP or gaming and even slow to surf because you have to wait 1.2 seconds for a DNS reply, then another 1.2 seconds before the page reaches you.

3 sec min. lag per web page assuming there are not external links (like ads) that require a separate DNS request and http request.

For all but large file xfers you are better off on dialup than on Satellite and you will save the $1440 it costs for the first year of satellite.

Being in the middle of nowhere on a slow dialup, I was faced with satellite as my only option. Well that or move, I moved.

I use my service for vonage VoIP service on Adelphia's HSI, the $30/month I save on my phone bill covers the extra cost of broadband.

yup

Get used to the disconnects- It will happen always. It doesn't ever get better. I've lived w/ it for 3 years. I have no other choice but dial-up, so I put up w/ it.

I have a tech coming out today in fact- My modem keeps losing it's connection. 6 to 7 times a day.

Re: yup

Well the service of Adelphia definitely varies by locale. I live in Springville, NY (on a friends PC with (satelite right now in case your wondering), but back at my place i have powerlink and I am extremely satisfied with the service I have been getting. I have had it for over three years and the only disconnects I have got have been in the first year, ever since that everything has been smooth sailing. and the new upload cap is a lot nicer, even though its only 256. service is always fast, never a slow down but hey maybe im just lucky. but like i said, it varies. not all adelphia service is bad.

-- Update 8/7/07 --
So Adelphia is officially gone. TW took over and did ineed lower our speeds. The big upgrades gave us 15/1, which woulda been 16/2 on Adelphia. Oh well, it was a good ride while it lasted, and the forum rocked too! Bye Adelphia, I'll miss you.

-- Update 7/21/06 --
Had 6/768 for a year, its great now. Getting around 7mb down and 880 up! Hoping that when TW takes over they don't screw us over and lower our speeds.

-- Update 7/2/05 --
We have had the new 6/768 tier for a few months now, it's okay (a bunch of people can get like 8/900, but i only get 7/700 or so). I hope to see the 16/2 tier soon

-- Update 2/19/05 --
Well, a couple months ago the terayon was being crappy, slow speeds, constantly losing sync. Got a SB5100 from Adelphia. It worked much better. Got 2.6-2.8mb down and 190-240 up consistentaly.

About a week ago we upgraded to premiere. Our caps were raised to 4mb/512kb. I was getting 6mb down 600-700kb up when they first upgraded us, then ever since a couple hours later, its been 4.2-4.4mb down and 360-520 kb up. Not too bad, I am not complaining. Much better than normal.

Also, routing was wacky. It seems normal now. Traceroutes seem to go to a closer area, and not hop uselessly across the county. Thumbs up for fixing that finally, Adelphia.

running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 522.61Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 4.31Mb/s

Pretty good. We usually average in this area though:
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 522.61Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 4.31Mb/s

We went to the CO and got the self install kit for the standard teir, 3mb/256kb. $24.95/month for 3 months then $57.95/month thereafter.

15 mins later we got home with the self install kit and i set it all up. We were told it may not be usable till the end of the next business day (nobody had had it at our house before, and there may be a filter to remove). It synced right up, and i proceeded to install. I didnt like having to install activex stuff to install, but i did. After it failed on our account number multiple times, I decided to unhook the router and hook right to the modem. Worked on the first try.

Get on and speed test is 2600/130 ... wtf? So i check on other test sites and i get 240-270 kbit upload consistantly.

This has a dynamic dhcp ip. They gave us a Terayon TJ 715X and it is hooked to my D-Link DI-604 router, and my Microsoft wireless lan AP.

Routing..

Yea,

I have a routing problem also.
I go from....well here's a picture
»www.intuitivefx.com/~dha ··· .net.jpg
(this is tracing wdc.speakeasy.net)

And this is tracing dslreports.com
»www.intuitivefx.com/~dha ··· .com.jpg

I don't know what the problem is, it seems like I'm
making some extra hops and a loop or something.
I'll have Adelphia for a week tomorrow.

Note: I have same modem you have. I'm waiting for my Motorola SurfBord 5100 to get flashed and sent back.
Any idea how long it takes?

I ping really good to central servers, while im in south Florida. I ping 90-100ms to a server which I can drive to in less than 15 minutes.

I emailed the techs. No response yet.

I hope they fix it, or atleast get some faster/shorter routing.

Speed-Tests:
nyc.speakeasy.net
»/speed ··· 99363911

I can actually do about 2.7Mbit download and 240-248kb upload (When I actually downloaded/uploaded something)
