My Other Reviews·Cox HSI
·Verizon Online DSL
Pre-Sales Information: Had I not already done my research online, it would've been a different story. It seemed like I knew more about what services they offered than the representative that I talked to. I'm rating this lower because most customers are calling them to ask what services they provide, NOT the other way around.

Install Co-ordination: Installer showed up on time, and had all necessary equipment. I was setup within the hour, however I had to complain that I wasn't initially getting my Premier speeds. Points added because I had changed my install date because I was moving 2 days later than I had originally planned (it all happened on very short notice) and my Premier speeds were given to me within seconds of complaining.

Connection Reliability: I have not had any problems in the few months that I've had it, so I'm left with no choice but to rate it perfect for now.

Tech Support: From time to time I get a CSR that's a little bit, shall we say, "out of the loop". But needless to say, despite that, they're usually pleasant to deal with most of the time. I haven't gotten any abysmally un-articulate CSR's yet (unlike Verizon) so this is a good thing.

Services: Newsgroups are absolute rubbish, e-mail is a hack job, most of these things they may as well not even waste their time on. I think most of them are reliable, but they hardly give you enough space on your e-mail account, and 5Gb for newsgroups is horrible (yes I realize Comcast is 2Gb, but anyone that knows how to use NNTP knows 5Gb isn't all that much better, either). This costs me extra to pay for a domain for e-mail (which, to be fair to Adelphia, I was doing before anyways) and I have to pay for a news provider. For 69.95$ a month, I would expect far better service in this area. I would be less critical if I wasn't paying so much.

Value For Money: Rubbish, Rubbish, Rubbish. I'm a sucker for upload and thus I'll keep paying for it, but to me I don't see how I'm costing them any more than *maybe* 30$ to maintain their network and so forth. If you can find DSL for less, don't hesitate.

---

The Good

Ping: They remain fairly consistent most of the time. My West Coast ping test comes to be around 50ms, which is acceptable, but not exceptional.

The Bad

Newsgroups: I think I've said all I have to say here, 5Gb is worthless.

Price: Again, at 69.95$, if you can get DSL do so.

Inconsistent: This is the first cable provider that I've had that has had large fluctations in speeds during different tests. Normally I test within 5 megabit range (5-6000kbps), and generally speaking I normally land at about 6000kbps even, maybe a teeny bit over. But I've also seen tests as low as 1800kbps. This is the results that I've witnessed, however, I'll give Adelphia some credit due to the fact they probably do not have whole lot of bandwidth dedicated to this town. The upload speeds are usually consistent at least.

I took Adelphia as my Cable internet provider in Fredericksburg, VA. They were the only ones available in my area. so my choices were dialup through AOL or Cable internet with Adelphia.

After about 6 months of continued issues with internet being down and a clueless technical support. I ended up losing so much in my home business, that I was forced to go to dialup. dialup is of course, extremely slow, but it was much more reliable and I stayed with dialup til I moved from that location and was able to pickup another cable company.

the internet itself when it was up, was very fast and enjoyable. It seemed they had a bad local box that a fuse was burning out every 3 weeks and they refused to actually fix the problem. they would send out a service guy to replace the fuse, but it would take them 3 days to come out and do it. So I had an AOL backup account that I was paying for as well as the Cable. that was just too costly, so I just went to dial up.

My Other Reviews·Verizon Online DSL
Even having this company find where I lived to install the service was a terror. They couldn't seem to find my place; finally, I noticed some Adelphia vehicles in the neighborhood, and physically walked a field supervisor to where I live. It took a couple more days to find that my address was now in their database, and I proceeded to order.

I found the Ontario office to be particularly bad.

I ordered the upload at 400, and it is consistently higher than that. Download on same package was from 3000 - 4000; I haven't hit the ceiling in this, but am satisfied with the speeds I am getting, after the initial first few days.

Well, I just did a few different speed tests, and I am at about 1/3 the speed I should be getting; at least, on the speed tests here. My downloads seem okay, other than that.

I ordered the Premium Package, but didn't want the Digital Cable for the TV, and the unlearned field tech said they only offered the digital now, so I ended up going back to the office and telling them what the tech said and that I had no use for digital, since my TV is far from that, and they fixed me up.

Then, I got two bills at once, which ticked me off, and the customer service rep I talked to said they always rolled it over on the 23rd of each month. I was astounded, and told him that all they could expect from me was the $52.00 I would normally owe. The customer service rep said this after I had been assured, the month before by another, friendlier customer service rep, that I would be getting an eleven percent drop on my bill.

What a ball of BS.

Well, it seems they've capped my download and upload speeds to less than that which is what I am supposed to be paying for.

After this contract is up, I think I will shop it around - Verizon just has not been honest enough with me.

Multiple calls to outsourced tech support yield nothing of value. They couldn't find my ticket number in their database, and I got switched around to 4 different call centers my last call.
I have complained about connection problems since November and have yet to get an answer.
If I had another choice, I would switch TODAY!

Oh please dear God, bring FIOS to my neighborhood soon, Amen.

Having moved from Palm Coast (Flagler county) to Orlando I was under the impression that for once there would be a choice as far as cable/DSL/internet providers were concerned. That was an incorrect presumption.

At the time I was ultimately able to make contact there was but one high-speed horse to ride: Adelphia. I say ultimately because of the needlessly difficult layers of prompts and mail levels one needed to travel through in order to establish something as basic as a desire to spend money to open an internet account.

When I was finally able to speak to someone with a pulse I was most concerned with the download/upload connection speeds. Routine, ordinary inquiry, or so I thought but their subjects seemed to knock the account rep for numerous loops. Used to Bright Houses' near-8Mb downloads I was unhappily informed that speeds like that cost a whole lot more than $45 a month. For under $50 the best I could hope for was around 2Mb.

I also discovered that the modem was an additional $5 a month; a charge I never saw on a Bright House statement.

The tech who installed it (the modem) had just ran out of his stock, so another tech was dispatched to my apartment. The device (modem) he installed was obviously one which had been previously installed.

As for the thought of having a 'choice' between providers...that was a fleeting thought as well. The Orlando/Orange county area has long been carved/sliced up into territories, where lines are sometimes drawn literally across a two-lane street. Having spoken to a few Bright House reps in different mall kiosks I'm told that Bright House just flat-out isn't available to me at my present location. Period.

The news now is that Comcast will be the name on the invoices. Having no past experience with them it's a wait-and-see for now.

My Other Reviews·Embarq
The good:

I am a 6 year customer of Adelphia Powerlink. In the beginning, there were numerous problems with email and uptime; however, speeds since the year 2000 have been very good, consistently ranging from 2500 to 2900. Upgrades in 2002 improved uptime and email significantly. The addition of Giga-News for Usenet access is also a plus (5 gigs a month).

The caveat:

Tech support. It seems like the right hand never knows what the left is doing. Area-wide outages are slow to propagate -- or never do -- to phone tech support, leaving you to do the “reboot the modem” dance repeatedly, when you know the problem is beyond your drop. Truck rolls are usually spot on, though you'll often wait over a week to get a human to your door.

The bad:

They're a cable company: need I say more?

Bottom line:

I would recommend Powerlink to anyone shopping for high speed Internet in the 22902 zip. Sprint DSL service is available at roughly the same price but at one half the speed -- if you're close enough to a CO -- for a one year contract.

Update: 3/29/05

Adelphia is currently overselling the Charlottesville area. Consequently, performance has declined over the past 3 months.

The problem is more than likely due to introductory offers of $26.95 for 6 months to pump up subscriber numbers; the result is that I am consistently under 3000 down since going up to a 4000 cap. Am I complaining? Not yet, but ping performance and DNS resolution times are beginning to suffer as the queues of congested nodes grow.

The result is web pages that used to ‘pop’ fully open with a mouse click now trickle images like melting candles during peak hours.

Update: 5/21/05

Speeds are back up to par, with tests ranging between 2600 and 3600 down (depending on time of day). The worry now, of course, is how Comcast's acquisition of Adelphia will affect my current performance.

Update, 9/29/2005:

Outages are occurring in the Charlottesville area with alarming frequency. I’ve experienced three service interruptions in the past month, two of which denied Internet access for the entire evening, Another service interruption occurred when a thunderstorm caused a power outage, whereupon power was restored within an hour, cable TV service within two, but Internet access took more than 5 hours to return. The latter was a repeat performance of the previous month when a thunderstorm brought Powerlink to its knees for an entire evening while their cable TV worked perfectly. I don’t know what the problem is lately in Charlottesville, but I’ve made calls to two providers and I am arranging for a satellite tech to check line of sight.

I wouldn’t be so quick to check alternatives if it weren’t for the fact that Comcast will soon take over the system, and that the tech support on these issues was woefully inadequate. I called PTS two times knowing fully well there was a problem upstream with obtaining an IP, only to suffer a script reader that required the same old router/rebooting/pc troubleshooting [sic]. A trainee knowing what the modem status lights indicated should have realized the problem was likely beyond the drop (yes, I told the phone tech I had 3 solid flashing lights on an RCA DCM235).

Adding insult to injury, during all three incidents, it took well over 5 hours for the fact that these were all service area outages to prorogate up the line so that either a phone tech knew about it, or someone implemented a phone message informing those that called Adelphia that there was an area outage. All the money Adelphia has thrown at their Technical Support System has done nothing: it is still how NOT to run tech support, and they are still writing truck tickets for area outages. I guess I had better cancel mine today or the poor tech will show up with a thumb up the a**.

Bring back the status page; it was as effective as phone support – especially when you weren’t able to get online

Update: 11/21/06

For the third time this year I'm unable to reach enough websites in my favorites to be a royal PITA. This is not a DNS issue, and people in Charlottesville (the local MUG, for one) are starting to scream. The only way I can reach dslreports dot com via Adelphia is through a free proxy (the-cloak dot com); however, dslreports resolves fine through Adelphia, it simply won't load as packets die at some point in route (traces confirm this). I helped TS with this issue the last time by providing traces etc., but this time I was not elevated beyond tier one support, and basically told the problem was on my end. Well, the problem is on Adelphia's end now because I'm dropping the service as soon as I can drop the modem off at the local office; I hooked up with Embarq DSL service today.

Let me give you a bit of history...

I moved from Comcast where I was happy into an area with Adelphia. This was a year and 3 month ago. During that year the only time my service dropped was due to either A) Outage or B) payment. So no big complaints so far. I then moved back in August to a new apartment. This is where all the problems began.

A week before my move date, I called Adelphia and scheduled a move date. On that date the technician came out and connected me very promptly. Things were fine but then I did not get a new bill. After about a month of having the service, my speed dropped from 4MB to 1MB downstream. I called CS and asked what the problem was. I tried to browse the WWW and kept getting the Adelphia sign up page. So they reactivated my account. Then, I kept receiving these calls about my bill being sent back. I called and made sure they had the address. Still no bill. Then lo and behold, service disconnected. I called them to reactivate my service. I was told 24 HOURS until I would have service again. I called and called and called to get my service turned back on. I finally got through to a TS person who turned it back on for me. A week or 2 after that my connection speed dropped again. I called CS again and was told that I was put into a wallgarden because I made a change to my service. I was like, HOLD on. I do not have TV and the modem I have is over 3 years old. From the above experience, I want to be rid of Adelphia.

I called on a thursday morning via their website and quickly got an email confirmation. Proactively called them the next morning and got a scheduled appointment for the following Tuesday (could have had it Monday, though). By Noon on Tuesday I was ripping through the Internet at >2x what I had with Speed Factory on BellSouth's IFITL network.

Imagine ... twice the speed for have the money. Now this is customer-oriented sales and service!

November 1st rewarded me with Comcast taking over my local Adelphia franchise. And with this takeover, they rased rates 34%! No reason for the rate increase, and no chance to lock-in under the existing rates. Simply put, Comcast just applied the wrecking ball and will lose this customer immediately.
