I "switched" over to Optimum about seven months ago... even though everything still rides and routes over the Bresnan network. Simply put, download speeds are not consistent. On the open internet I see on average about 2.5Mbps... to the local Bresnan (Optimum West) speedtest server I see no more than 4.5Mbs within their network.

I cannot watch anything on Roku without it having to buffer at least twice per show.

Tech support is horrible. If I conducted myself the way I have experienced Optimum staff I would have been fired a long time ago, and my position is not at-will. It would be nice is someone knows how to think outside the box and not simply follow the onscreen script.

I have switched out all of my gear and wiring, even bought my own modem, had the wiring re-ran from the tap... Just to eliminate anything within my house. Simply put they have an over-sold over-congested system here... and no signs or communications they are trying to improve anything. Duoply at its best!

I feel you man

Currently I have been having issues with downloading stuff from optimum, but fios is generally better overall, I'd rather have a 20/5 connection rather than a 15/2. The service provides constant 20/5 whereas optimum might be as low as 10/2 and somtimes as high as 18/2 on the same server, I'd switch to fios in a hard beat if it were here, and if optimum tries to get me back, I'd ask them to provide 20/5 speeds for 43 bucks a month, multiroom dvr free for life, and tech support that actually cares about your problem.

I know most of the techs now because the service is too often horrendous.
Tech support is unparalelled but the system needs a major tune up.

I suspect that Rutledge and Bickham saw the writing on the wall and the current state of Optimum Online is a manifestation of that. The service was fantastic for about the first year I had it. It has steadily deteriorated and over the past 2 years I've probably spent 6 months harassing tech support to fix the packet loss and 12 hour sustained +150ms pings to a server less than 15 miles away. For a 30/5 tier this is really inexcusable especially when they allow it to go on for months at a time.

It's great as long as you don't expect to use it during peak hours.

Update: I upgraded my original assessment to reflect my appreciation of the accessibility of OOL's engineering staff. Their business tech support policy is second to none unless you have service costing thousands per month. I have called on Sunday afternoon and they sent someone to the premises within a couple of hours.

The biggest problem, though, is that some of the equipment is beyond the scope of "normal" technicians responsiblity and although I had to contact one of the executives in charge of engineering in order to get some action, he was ever so gracious and accommodating. That is indeed a rare thing, if not unheard of, in the world of consumer grade ISPs. Engineering appears to be earnestly working to try to fix my issues and I really appreciate it. I think that the entire system is currently under strain due to their upgrading everything to DOCSIS3 on a live system.

At least they're trying which is more than I can say for Verizon. Even if Verizon FiOS was available in my area I would prefer to remain with Cablevision because of their excellent customer relations. My dealings with Verizon tech support and as a service provider have always been the absolute worst and I deeply dread ever having to deal with them.

Re: I ditched the wireless

Well, that's good news and decent speeds for you even though I suspect you have Boost+ service which claims ("up to") 50/8. Just remember that Cablevision's responsibility (for internet service) ends at the cable modem. Every thing in your house after the cable modem is your own.

After fixing some internal networking problems I am getting consistent download/upload speeds. However, the service as a standalone is very expensive! If I was to bundle with TV and Phone the price would be nice at $69.95 for the first year but I like My DirectTV and OOMA phone service. My last speed test I got 60 mbps down / 8 mbps up.

I wish they would reconsider the pricing structure for Internet only service as I almost don't need to TV and my OOMA phone is free.

I had OOL from 1997 until 2008. By 2008 monthly price was $166 for TV and Internet and equipment (5 boxes). In the early years Internet speeds were great, TV was ok. By 2008 internet speeds at peak hours (6pm and on) had deteriorated to less than 1.5 mbps and TV quality was poor, constant picture freezing and picture frequently breaking up.

In 2008 I went to Fios with TV, 15/5 internet and phone with very little else for about $150, by 2011 the package was 25/25/ hd extreme/phone and the bill had risen to $160) Internet speeds were consistent and picture quality was very good.

In 2011 Cablevision offered, and I took, the triple play (with boost 50/5)and equipment for $95. I complained about the poor service I had before and was promised the moon, a new drop, a booster on the line, etc. The line was never changed out (the same wire was used), as for the booster I have no idea if that was ever done.

At first internet was fast 50/ 5, TV was same poor quality as before, freezing and breaking up and picture quality in many channels was very poor, phone was very good. By week 5 my internet speeds had dropped at peak times to 5 and a bit over 1, »speedtest.net/result/156 ··· 6220.png off peak it was 20/2.

By week 6 with the internet speed loss along with the poor TV quality, I went back to Fios.

Now a "new customer" with Fios I'm getting what I had before for $130 a month.

One note:upon return to Fios, I now have to dial 10 digits to all points, even within the local area code (10 digit dialing is not the norm for my area code) and I no longer have STB's with clocks, which the family hates.

Once in a great while, I can squeeze maybe 10-15 down...but not often. Most of the time it's around 5...and maybe 1 or 2 up...not even close to what I'm paying for or what was promised. Optimum Online/Bresnan is not worth the money, but it does beat having to use my cell / 3g all the time! Was promised up to 30 down and 10-15 up. Never has it been close to that. The install was good. Had the TV package but the DVR's kept freezing and they wouldn't replace them, so I cancelled it.

Don't Be Too Sure About DSL

I picked up Verizon DSL's basic tier to cut back my expenses. My line has been optimized for 928/288 Kbps. This is my current speed:

And this is my speed with one game currently downloading from Big Fish:

The speed tier you can get is determined by how far from the phone company's local central office you are; the farther you are, the lower the speed tiers that are available. I got the .5-1.0 tier; the fastest one I could get would have been 1.1-3.0, but that would have been $15 more per month, and I seriously doubted that that I would get anywhere near 3.0 due to my distance from the CO. It's faster than dial-up, but if you're used to cable broadband speeds, it's really like crawling on the internet.

I have been with Optimum Online Business internet service for over 2 years now and I have had a lot of problems. About 4-6 months into the service, their nodes were failing in the area, which took over 2 weeks (and countless phone calls) to fix. I have an online video business so it's necessary to constantly upload videos to our servers. However, Optimum Online has traffic shaping policies in place as far as bandwidth usage goes, so after 3-4 hours of uploading at 3-4 mbps (5mbps is my max), my entire connection goes to a crawl with download speeds at ~2mbps and upload speeds at ~200kbps.

I have confronted representatives and technicians over the traffic shaping that Optimum Online does but they all claim that it does not do that. But tests and results don't lie.

Go with this company in the Westchester area only if your business doesn't depend on the actual speeds that Optimum Online claims to offer.

Almost forgot: the only good thing I have to say about Optimum Online is that they answer the phones for business customers very quickly. If you're a residential customer on the other hand, you have to wait.

Untrue

Cablevision does not throttle your connection speed. You probably have bad cabling that needs to be replaced. I have optimum boost and the speed given is what I get with no issues at all. I wouldn't trade it for anthing, not even FIOS which sucks.

I've had several problems connecting with overseas #'s. Calls to rectify the service are pretty much useless. In addition you can't call more than 500 minutes. Once you pass the first 250 minute block you are charged for a second, but after that you can't get another block of minutes and must wait until the next billing cycle to call or opt out of the plan and get another plan from Optimum and at the next billing cycle go back to OV World Call. I should have jumped on the Verizon deal of unlimited international calling when they offered it. Deals will come and go so when the time comes I will go to Verizon (or Vonage).

So long story short i reported late March that at night and on weekends our speeds dropped to less than a meg when we are paying for eight megs. In May after having worked fairly consistently with their tech support i said i wanted to cancel and get a refund back to when the issue started and was told that would be no problem but that the tech thought they were close to a resolution. So i agreed, and just recently when i called in and said listen you have not resolved my issue i want my refund back to late march for service issues not only did they say it was now a problem all the sudden to provide a refund for speed issues (on their network to bresnan.speedtest.net so not on the internet) they also tried to charge me $35 bucks for a tech visit to my site which was to satisfy the curiosity of the billing person...

Craziness.... never got a call back always had to call into billing and tech support to get anyone to work on anything... and it is a classic over subscription issue (or i assume it is...)

thanks for letting me share this poor experience i hope it causes folks to think twice about signing up with Bresnan and if they do have issue to not give them much of a chance to resolve the issue with out credits up front.

Over subscribed?

I've had similar experience with very slow speeds evenings and weekends. I've got the 18X2 account and regularly see speeds of about 30% of my up to speed. Calling tech support, I've gone through their same troubleshooting steps several times only to be told that a higher level tech will have to look at it. I never hear from them again. That is if you don't count the TV commercials always telling me how great they are.

I have not given up yet though. I am still hopeful that they will get something done. They do appear to be over subscribed and they may also have some routing issues. I've done trace routes that have made as many as eight hops before even leaving the Bresnan network.

OOL and customers.

ive been having an ongoing war with OOL and the packet loss issue, its literally been 2 years almost since i started reporting it to CSR's asking for help. long story short 2 years, 25+ tech visits, 50+ CSR phone calls still havent solved the problem. ATM OOL seems like they are attempting to fix the problem but it is very slow and honestly a refund/rebate is deff in order, whether or not they will actually pay up for their huge blunder is yet to be seen. all i know is that i pay my cable bill every month, and yet OOL does not supply a working product. any other business would have bankrupted themselves years ago if they followed OOL's business model of "more customers, less quality". i feel your pain and advise you to go with FIOS or another highly rated ISP, or try your best to work with the OOL staff. posting in the direct forums with ping tests and modem signals could be a start, along with calling the CSR's and asking them to forward your issue to regional supervisors. Keep scheduling the techs and maybe they will solve it.
