We've had Cablevision for 24 years (since I was born and when the house was built). We've seen it all and since day 1, internet has been rock solid. Their TV has always sucked, the boxes and their interface have ALWAYS looked dated and ugly. The picture quality has always been abismal compared to FiOS but we can't get FiOS. Once I got my first job outa college, I started paying for DirecTV for my family. Internet is OK and in a good WAY. Every friend's house I've been to with Comcast has been garbage. They're getting nowhere near the speeds they pay for and it drops out alot. Since we first got cable internet back in 2001, the internet has consistently been rock solid vs Comcast. And the customer service has consistently been amazing, even after the Altice acquisition. The only gripe we had were slow internet speeds. We had 60Mb/s until 2016 when Altice finally upgraded internet speeds. The 100Mb/s highest tier used to be $140. After the acquisition, 400 Mb/s internet is only $100. They started charging us a modem rental fee so I also purchased my own cable modem. Even in the evening, my internet does not get that slow and congested. If you're moving and Optimum is your only chance, you are indeed in good hands. However, I've seen the light with FiOS and you should get that instead. The picture quality was insanely better on any TV. When my dad moved to staten island and got FiOS and with the same TVs, even on 720p, there was a BIG difference in picture quality. And the internet I just think is snappier. Our Verizon central office does not have fiber optics so they will never wire us with FiOS which I found out from Verizon techs. If Comcast is your only chance, just get outa town man. Do yourself a favor and move. If you're willing to spend $400/month on Comcast 2Gb/s fiber internet, there might be hope for you. If not, your home is a lost cause bro. member for 10.4 years, 2873 visits, last login: a few hours ago lodged 5.6 years ago
I had optimum online first in about 2008 or 09 , but in 2010 I got fios... Used fios for years until the service deteriorated for me..Started going out 3-4 times a week and the technicians didn't manage to effectively solve the problem. OOL in the past had problems with capping , unreliable speeds etc. for example on my old 15mb plan I got speeds of like 1mbps. Now days I pay for 200/35 package with the triple play and I receive consistent speeds (usually test between 200 and 220mb) and around 37mb upload (they over-provision the line). Connection so far was reliable and steady.Latency is great.Price can be lower. Cannot complain , I was very excited about FIOS years ago , but now I prefer OOL to their service because of the reliability of the connection. member for 19.7 years, 616 visits, last login: 4.1 years ago updated 5.8 years ago
I have the Optimum 200 service. I work from home and my company pays the bill. I've had the service for over 10 years and I honestly don't remember much about the install process. However, I have had a small number of tech visits and they have always been very helpful. They would swap out equipment such as splitters, re-crimp my cables, mess with the stuff on the utility pole, and never charge me. They recently issued me a smart router and a modem (separate devices) saying they would be needed to make use of their higher speeds. The modem was fine, I guess, but starting June 2018 they will be charging $10/month lease fee (plus tax). I decided to buy my own modem as soon as I saw this announcement. I still use their smart router (Sagemcom) but I really don't like it. The router's firmware has been completely overwritten with Optimum's own version. I dislike that I need to have internet access to get to my router (the router's LAN IP redirects to a WAN address.) I often need to do a partial factory reset on the router because either my wifi connections will stop working while my ethernet connections still work, or vice versa. This reset keeps my password and security options, but IP reservations are lost. I believe this problem has to do with DHCP as the affected devices will show as having a 169.x.x.x address. The range of the Wifi is very good. The router can also be used as a media server for attached USB media, but I have not used this feature. My biggest problem with Optimum Online is the tech support. Starting with the website: when I suspect there is an outage, I get on my phone and connect to the support web ite using my data plan. The page does not render properly and is completely unusable. I tell my phone's browser to render the page as a desktop PC would so that i can use the page. Their web page will say that the service status is fully operational. I will then spend a half hour or more cycling power on my network devices, rebooting computers, etc. After doing all this, I eventually find out (maybe from people posting on Twitter) that there actually is an outage. If their website had correctly conveyed this information to me, I wouldn't have wasted all that time troubleshooting local issues. I've actually opted in to receive notifications about outages and I never get them. All of this being said, the outages are not very frequent, and when they do happen, they are usually after midnight. member for 21.7 years, 34 visits, last login: 3.9 years ago lodged 5.8 years ago
Verizon is too expensive. Have had optonline in two different areas in nj along with a business account in a third. Best value... 2018 - update Still the only business in town, but reliability and tech support are par none. member for 21.1 years, 5510 visits, last login: 44 days ago updated 5.9 years ago

overall it does the job, but for the price I am paying I am considering switching to antenna with tablo 4-tuners dvr. and potentially sling or youtube if they were to provide 4k for instance... member for 13.5 years, 13 visits, last login: 2.5 years ago lodged 6.8 years ago
Optimum has been very reliable, we've had less than 10 service outages in the past 10 years and they were all resolved fairly quick. TV is a bit expensive(high cable box fees and surcharges) but the picture quality is good in my opinion. Phone has international calling with somewhat cheap rates, and quality is also good. Internet is very reliable with very little downtime and upload speeds are great when compared to other Cable ISPs. 60/25 internet is $55/month if you have Triple Play. If you have a 50Mbps+ plan, you get free web hosting and a free domain, and so far the web hosting has been pretty good considering it's free. 300Mbps+ is also apparently coming soon, so expect that too. If you have the choice of getting Optimum, I definitely recommend it, especially Optimum Online. Attachments: member for 8.3 years, 4403 visits, last login: a few hours ago updated 7.1 years ago
1-13-07 thru 8-10-16 Got Optimum when I moved into the service area back in 2007, from day 1 it was a very fast & stable connection, eventually i got tv & phone also and those were very good also. I have moved out of the service area otherwise i would still have the service. member for 21.2 years, 7914 visits, last login: 88 days ago lodged 7.6 years ago
Since March I have had over 100 outages. I have now signed up with Verizon. Tech support has been helpful but they haven't been able to fix the problem. Have been with them for 13 years. Will come back once Verizon offers expire and gets too expensive. Hope they've fixed the problems in two years. member for 7.6 years, 8 visits, last login: 3.2 years ago updated 7.6 years ago |
