In attempting to obtain DSL service for 5 months, I had many many problems. First I tried to go through Phoenix/Northpoint for $39.99 per month for 12 months. No luck, they told me that I had fiber not copper TO THE HOUSE and that I would have to get the wire replaced by Verizon before installation could continue. Ok I thought, so I called Verizon and they said its fiber to the neighborhood, but always copper to the house, otherwise I would only need a router and I'd have T1 free. Ok, call back Phoenix and now I'm told that there are no more ports/pairs at my CO and i'd have to wait. Numerous calls later, I wolunteer to give up my second phone line to free the port/pair but Verizon says no way, that goes into a general pool and whoever is next on the wait list gets it. Next I try to go through Earthlink for $49.99 a month for 6 months. They took my order, assured me there was ports/pairs and even emailed me with an install date a few days later. I took the day off from work to be there for the Verizon tech but noone bothers to show up or call. A call to Verizon and Im told that DSL does not run over fiber and I couldn't get it to my house ever. I respond, my next door neighbor has it and we share the same pole, so the wire must be there. They give me the Verizon DSL phone number and tell me to deal with them. Verizon DSL says that although the computers don't say I qualify for DSl, they recommend a manual loop test since the systems have not been updated since the merger. This doesn't make any sense to me since I've been a Verizon customer since well before the merger but I agree. The day of the line test I get home from work to a message that I should call tech support for an explanation. I call the tech manager and he agrees to send me a tech to come switch my wires to a striaght copper. The day of the switch, the installer calls to tell me that this is impossible since my nieghborhood uses a combination of copper and fiber so DSL would only be possible at a huge investment to Verizon. I call the service manager back with this new information and he tells me that is true but they cannot get the equipment "due to politics since the supplier doesn't want to sell to Verizon" - obvious crap. Finally, febup of all the bull, I go to The Wiz on saturday at 9:45 and purchase the 3Com modem with 60 days free service and $29.99 a month and lo and behold, the Optimum installer is at my house the next day, on a sunday. He even comes to my door after he finishes to tell me that my service is ready and asks if I would like assistance connecting inside. He then runs a wire very neatly for me and Im up and running in no time, no problems no outages, nothing. The speed is incredible and at least they can deliver the product at the promised time. I don't really blame Earthlink or Phoenix, but they could have been a little more responsive or informative. As far as I know, Phoenix still has me waiting for a free pair/port and Earthlink still has my order in limbo with Covad. Oh well, who needs em for now anyway. I figure by the time I need to switch from cable, I'll get the fiber to the house service, IFITL I think, since it appears to already have the backbone in place in my neighborhood.

First, I tried to get DSL from two different companies. DSL is way too much of a pain. Telocity & Northpoint stated that I could get DSL.. In the case of the first, I had to "Switch back to Bell Atlantic, or cancel your order." So, I cancelled. Technically there is still an order with PhonenixDSL/Northpoint, but it's gone nowhere for over 3 months. On to the savior of this mess, Optimum Online. I saw a commerical for it on TV, and I ran up to my room, dialed up, and checked out the web site...Nope, Yonkers not listed. Damn. Oh well, then I think "why are they running these ads if we can't get it?" So then I'm mad a Cablevision (no big surprise there...). Then, pretty randomly, a day later we get a call from Cablevision -- SIXTY DAY FREE TRIAL of Optimum Online..So, I'm like, I'll get it until I get DSL, then I'll cancel it.. Well, placed the order, got the details of the $150 cable modem, and it was in the mail. 3 days later I get a package. 100 or 250 (can't remember) ft of cable, THREE, yes, THREE isntall books, splitter, modem, etc. Unpack modem, plug into computer. Run wire to room. Hook up cable. Turn on cable modem, syncs in like 2 mins. COOL! Turn computer on, and it grabs an IP (which has been the same for over 2 months now, unless I boot into another OS..), run the cd, setup my account, and been happy ever since. Get about 2400 kbps (360 K/sec) download and about 600kbps (~80-90 K/sec) upload.. To hell with DSL!
As for servers, the only thing I run is SSH so I can get at it from school if needed, but that's not usually up. (They usually scan FTP, ping, and telnet, not ssh)
Overall a good value.
-Matt

Hey,
After harrassing the local Cablevision pop on a monthly basis for the last 2 years about Cablemodems... One month.... not to long ago i heard the wonderful music of "Yes, It's Available"
I hauled my parents 1.5 hrs away to my local WIZ (right) and Picked up my wounderful 3Com Cable MTX cable modem, signed a few papers, read the TOS, gave em the AMEX. and off i go
2 problems occurred. I get home, and it dosn't sinc up for crap. I called and it turns out my account was created but never activated. 1hr of wasted surfing time.... it was 11:30 no sync... i think "great"
Next day.... 13 hrs wasted.... i called Cablevision, said they'll come on out. next day at around 9:30 am they told me that my cable signal (was supposed to be like 17) was -3... Now that explains the Snow TV.. ok.. they run a Temp wire staight to my house from the pole... and into my modem.. bam! in 2 min it was all green and i was surfing at awsome speeds... (note... 2 weeks later my signal was like 21)
Everyone says their cable sux and how it's a waste... blah! i goto my friends at SUN.COM and download Star Office in umm like 45 secons (70-90 megs) sure beats my dialup ISDN line for 80$ a month... Then i try to upload... 120k/sec it was sweeeet, and well worth the 29.00 a months.
=-=-The Cons=-=- You can't have any ports open.. like a FTP for mp3's or something... they block your signal.. And the monitor ALL ports every 5 min
Also i don't like not having a Static IP... it's all DHCP.. I would much preferr a Static IP
OVERALL this was great... If you can get it GET IT! Everyting is geared for the Home User, and the Power User it's very easy.
Thanx for Listening...
Matt PS (excuse my spelling/grammer - only 15)

This thing rocks. I went for the 24 month contract, because they give you the cable modem(3 Com) for $99 (supposedly $200 off the $299 price). You can pay for the modem in 2 installments. The monthly rate is in effect if you have a certain level of cable service (which I have anyway), otherwise it's $39.99. The setup went without a hitch (I already had a network card) The hardest part was stringing the new cable to my conputer. After that, within 30 minutes, I was up and running. They'll charge you $30.00 to install. The service has been very fast. In fact it's too good to be true. I hope that the bandwith doesn't get clogged up in the future with too many users.

-=Road Runner=-
Everyone was telling me that Road Runner sucks so i wanted to find out for myself. I ordered the service and in a week they came. First they installed the cables and gave me a Toshiba Cable modem, everything looked and seemed great. Then the PC tech guy came and he stared to play around with my comp checking stuff, so he put the network card in but it didn't work cause i had a 3D Card and a video card, so he stared jerking the card to get it out and he didn't see that the cards are screwed in, he even took my 3D card out ( i was like WTF!! ) so he told me that he will connect the cable through a USB NIC connector and it worked. Even though the guy was rude he got the cable working. My pings are great in Quake3Fortress, i ping 40-90 on east servers. But at 7 pm i tryed to surf the web alittle but the sites are loading slowly and my download rate was slow ( 10kbps ). Then i got 30 kpbs to 50kbps, is that low or normal for cable?? Everything seems fine now and i am happy about my Road Runner service so fair.

I'm glad to say, so far setting up Cablevision with Optimum Online has been very smooth. The setup was self-installation, and they had The Wiz setup and sell the whole package to it's customers. Cable TV bill was not under my name, so all they had me do was to have a Cablevision representative talk to the person the bill was under, answering a few questions for security and then the said "ok" over the phone. I walk in to The Wiz at about 30 minutes before closing time and they already had the paper work all setup from the phone call. I pick up one of two choices of external cable modems from their selection: 3Com's external cablemodem and Motorola's external cablemodem. Actually there were 3 models, but one was supposed to be for Macs, but besides extra software which were NOT needed that came with my cablemodem, it really didn't matter. All of them were $300. I chose a 3Com and after filling out some forms and making sure I have all the proper cables and equipment (correct class of processors, network card), I was ready to go after I paid. It was a two year contract, $200 instant rebate on the cablemodem, two months free and at $29.95/month afterwards. I thought it was a great deal, considering I am paying $20/month + $80 for a hardware modem for dialup access, except for the two year contract, which I was NOT obligated to say yes to. I paid a total of $99 plus tax for a cablemodem and 2 coaxial cables and a splitter.
I go home, read through the setup, which was covered by a starter kit which came with whole deal from The Wiz, and the installation booklet the cablemodem came with. There is a bit of catch in the setup of the computer using the new connection. No where did I see that the network cards needed to be set for DHCP to get our IPs automatically. Besides that fact, which might just be an oversight of my own, everything else was plug and go.
In a matter of minutes, my connection was up. The connection seemed a bit flaky within the first half an hour of the setup, but I believe it was because I was a new customer and they were busy activating what they need to on their end. After that I was getting fast, fast speeds. I was a happy customer. All this was done in less than 1 hour of calling and purchasing a cablemodem. So far, so good.

My Review is on cable vision and there cable services in New Jersey.
Well where do I begin? Well I live in north New Jersey and have been waiting for a high speed internet connection in my town for the past 2 years and lets just say I was more then eager to hear the news from my friend when he said that I might be capable of receiving an internet connection from Cablevision. So I preceded to call them the next day and was delighted to hear that "My house was wired and ready to go" well taking this as I always do from large companies such as this with a grain of salt I decided to call again a couple of days later to make sure. So I did and was informed to go to the local WIZ where these modems were sold and ask a Cablevision representative. I went and was more then delighted when the representative behind the desk who was very friendly and seemed to know what she was doing said with a huge smile "Yes, your house is "optimally wired" I begged her and preceded to ask if she was positive her reply "You don't believe me look at the monitor in front of you see your address in red it means its ready." Seeing this fail proof color code I thought I finally had this dream of "constant and high speed internet connection finally answered" I preceded to network my house and order a new computer to take advantage of this dream come true. Braving the world of networking I began to run Ethernet wire drilling holes through floors, ignoring my moms plea to put down the drill I went further finally having the network installed and my new computer set up I went to pick up my cable modem. Seeing how it wasn't sold at my local WIZ store I had to go a little out of my way to purchase a machine a small price to pay for the benefits I though I would get. So Thursday August 3rd me and my friend after work preceded to go down to Paramus and visit the cablevision dealer to purchase myself a modem. But still unsure of this huge "conglomerate" I called 3 hours before I was going to visit this WIZ store to make sure I was capable of receiving such service. And sure enough the lady on the other end had a gleeful reply of "Yes your house is "Optimally Wired"" was the only thing I needed to hear. So braving the Monsoon that the east coast was faced with that day me and my friend made our way down to Paramus to buy me a cable modem. Risking life a small thing to pay for such a connection we made it safely to the wiz and were greeted warmly by the two Cablevision employees. And when I preceded to make my request about getting Internet service for my house. My heart fell as the lady not so kindly replied "You can't get it" I tried to explain and tried to remain calm (kind of hard to do after risking life and limb) but at the end I was left with a dream shattered and holes in my ceiling.

In very early March I signed with Phoenix Network. Bell Spent two days at my house, and then pronounced that I was connected to Bronxville Road, but that there were "no pairs available at the CO."
A few weeks later they thought there were pairs, and revisited the house. This time, no acceptable signal. The next time, no signal at all. Suddenly, the router arrived (it was billed to my credit card along with the first month service ($79.99)) back in March. Northpoint visited, still nothing, false alarm still no signal. Two weeks later, Northpoint came again, still nothing.
Supposedly, there is an open "trouble ticket" at Bell Atlantic.
Suddenly, after years of delay, the Dolan family turned on Optimum Online in Yonkers where I live. I went to WIZ (an electronics chain the Dolan's also own along with Cablevision, which provides Optimum). The Cable Modem, which looks a little like a shark fin, and makes one think it should be sitting next to an IMAC costs $300, $149 if you sign up for two years at $29.99. (39.99 if you don't have cablevision).
I took it home, plugged it in and turned it on. It required a cable splitter, and some wire and CAT5 cable. All given to you for your own install.
Results, I am getting about 1 megabit up and 2 megabits down. Sometimes more.
In the metro NYC area, everyone I know who has a cable modem is very satisfied. Everyone with DSL has horror stories to relate.
It seems to me that DSL is a a very "kludgey" technolgy, while cable is much simpler to deal with. I am sorry for all of the efforts that Phoenix, and Northpoint and even poor Bell Atlantic put into this effort.
I am hoping that Phoenix is as quick to give me a credit, as they were in billing me so many months ago.
