I put my self on the notify list on Optimums Website and As soon as It was in my area I was notified by a Letter in the Mail and Immediatly Signed up. They set up to deliver the modem within 1 week of the signup I had. The modem was delivered to my door. And right out of the box was everything I needed to setup the modem. It came with 50 Feet of Coax, NIC, Modem, Splitter, Ethernet Cable and software. Plugged it in, Set up windows for it. Ran fine within 30 minutes. This may not be true for everyone but it went flawlessly for me. member for 23.2 years, 101 visits, last login: 5.6 years ago lodged 23.2 years ago

Optimum Online Optimized?HI I ALSO got optimum online and for me to it was good except for the fact i needed new cable ran through my house. It is a good deal for $29/month if you ask me. the reason for my title is because when you plug in the modem(terayon modem is the best modem to use for this which i have), and once you connect to the network they rip you off. I found this out every time i unplugged my modem and replugged it in, the RWIN and MTU settings would be defult according to the optimum online tech people. They would set the tcp receive window to only around 6 thousand when it should be at 32 thousand (around there) i did the tweak tester and it picked up these problems. So if you got optimum online i suggest to download the drtcp.exe file to set your mtu path descovery to yes and download the .reg file mtupatch98, to fix your registry. both of these can be found on this wp. Also if you want even faster connection get a new nic card (return the soho card) and get a better card. (I have a Intel™ Pro 100/+ card and i can do the bandwith test hear and get up to 128 times as fast as 56k!!!!!!

Re: Optimum Online Optimized? How was OOL changing settings on your computer? I have not had this happen to me. I set MTU and RWIN once and it has been fine ever since. Just curious.

to eval smoke
Smoke1991. I am amazed that you can make such a statement. I can assure you there is NO WAY the OOL tech's know what your RWIN and MTU is set at. Absolutely, Positively No Way. Maybe your modem had lost sync and winipcfg had shown a the Default Auto Configuration IP of 169.254.x.x??
The RWIN and MTU are Registry Keys and simply put the OOL techs do not have the capability to view this information remotely.. Re: Optimum Online Optimized?yah its me again and when i called up to your tech # (1888-4-optimum) the person that helped me was able to get onto my computer to check the stats and setings of it. Paul dont be rude, the settings of the rwin and mtu vary for veryone. I know for a fact also if you have problems with your active X like i do it can lsoe sync. Im only 15 and im still setting up my computer. I have had problems sence day one with this computer sence i did build it my self and all so that comes to affect. I have conflicts with my windows and other programs. but I KNOW AS A FACT if you unplug your modem and plug it back in from the back of the modem it will reset it for soem users for my self. i found out from someone that it only does it to some people so thats the answer to your questions. I am sorry i could not fix my spelling and grammer but its late and i got to go to school.
| | | | |
Re: Optimum Online Optimized?I apologize if I came off as rude, This was not the intention. HOWEVER, I stand by what I stated earlier, The OOL tech does not have access to the Registry of any computer. The diagnostics are not built to enable this to be done. The tech may have read some stats to you concerning the modems Upstream/Downstream performance but, again I assure you it wasn't any sort of Registry Entries.

I have heard such great things about OOL. So I went out and got it. Well I have had nothing but problems. I have been getting speed as slow as or slower then 56k. I have been on the phone countless number of times with the techs and no one seemd to have and answer for me. I have tweaked, and have reconfigured. I just don't know what else to do at this point. I use to have Phoenixdsl but they were sold to Telocity, when I heard that I ran fast, I heard that Telocity is the worst ISP to go with. I have no other choices in my area. Hang in there! The 1 place OOL has trouble is with the install. I guess its not too bad compared to most DSL but anyways... Make sure your modem is connected at the 1st splitter. It should be a 2 way. Larger splitters can cause signal loss. Also ask cablevision if there are any filters on the pole. It might take a few weeks to get going but it will all be worth it in the end. Hang in there!

Techs are stupidI used to work for a computer shop in upstate new york where cable modems were, believe it or not, available. It was good to have them, but we had one on one interaction with the cable company and were able to fix problems quickly. . . hell, sometimes we even went down to the local cable company and fixed problems over lunch, hands on, with the actual techs.
Back on Long Island early in 2000 and they did not have cable modems in my area. So I went with Flashcom. That was a nighthmare cow from hell setting up, but after all was said and done it was good. Then the telocity nightmare occurred and I had to deal with their nonsense. Finally got a cable modem and boom, it works and is as fast as dsl. So I cant complain.
The problem is that these so called techs are not MCSE's or if they are they dont have craps worth of real world experience. The only guys who have any experience are high end and they are always so swamped its not even funny. I even had one joker tell me that it was impossible for me to post a web site without registering the url. Hmm, I guess he never used ftp to get into an IP address. DUH.
DUH DUH DUH. Let the buyer beware. Whether it be optimum online, telocity, joe blow cable, the fact is that they have your money and you are at their mercy. It sucks, it really sucks but nowadays all these loser companies care about is the quick profit. So what if they go out of business in a few weeks, who cares, the money is already in their pockets as they play with their expensive toys.
The only language these morons are going to understand is law suits and being hacked into like the loser morons over at AOL. Its so insane it makes me sick, but at the same time it makes me very thankful to be able to set these things up myself.

depending on the linear route to the centrix/ATM node in the area, your throughput can vary(not to mention the sheer amount of people in your area), all tweaks aside(assuming that you set your rwin and MTU and PPP chap etc.., get a freind to DHCP the host(or ghost[ a ghost is the first node before CV's network] ) at the same time(tip: ool's MTU is 1500) find out who is faster, find the node location for your zip, whos closer? usualy in most cases the person who is closest to the DS-3/ATM gets the lowest pings/latency and a slight data burst more effecient then tha later, but we must remember, its a shared line, non modular, speed fluctuates greatly from user to user. a tip for upstream requests is to install a cable amplifier on your cable line on the same RG-6 as your coax out( line thats connected to your modem), this will amp it from 2200Khz to 46000Khz, which doesnt affect the centrix node becouse its ranges are much greater, around 10,000Ghz or so, this wont do anything downstream becouse the throughput has already been declared, you can make something faster thats already comming slower, but you can boost what your sending to the node, i did this and floating points(no start---stop bits on parity) went double, i.e i got 100K/s instead of 50K/s, it worked great for me, but for others it didnt, seems once again like a trial and error thing, in theory it should work. www.speedguide.net, recomended site my line speed 5,912 dstream 861 upstream ~~~ H I ~~~ line quality o% packet loss, 5-20ms latency, varies member for 23.4 years, 51 visits, last login: 22.5 years ago lodged 23.3 years ago

Using the attractive 3Com Sharkfin modem and a simple cable splitter, one can now get Optimum Online in much of the New York Metro area. You need to have Cablevision, which is one of the big regional cable providers. Price $29 per month. If you spend $100 at the WIZ the modem is free. They give you all you need to install it, or they will install it themselves. This is a good example of why DSL is flopping. I tried to get Northpoint through Phoenix. It didn't happen and now they are gone. Luckily I got my $700 router deposit back before Phoenix folded. It is an assigned static IP, it is set-up as dynamic, but you always get the same one. The few times it has been down, they knew why and when it would be back up. How can one complain? member for 23.8 years, 83 visits, last login: 18 years ago lodged 23.3 years ago

Sharkfin attractive? You gotta be kidding!Agree that optimum online is a terrific provider. Very fast and very reliable.
The $29.95 price only applies to people who subscribe to at least the family cable package. Those of us who prefer the selection and picture quality of satellite TV have to pay $39.95.
I can't believe you think the Sharkfin modem is attractive. Personally, I've never seen a more ugly piece of consumer electronics. Given that the latest Tolly cable modem tests show the Terayon is faster, I see no reason to give that eyesore a place on my desk.

OOL Is the ISP to stick withI personally think that OOL is the best ISP there is in the world. For that price oh lord ... DSL costs you 39.95 for a month you get 648/90 speeds takes years to get it working 90% downtime (verizon) canceletion takes 25 days opposite to OOL 1.5 day installtion date ready as fast as verizon power package yes i said power package which is 7mbit down and i think 648 up i get ranges from 5-8 mbit down and 3mbit up and can prove it... If you are getting upload speeds that fast, you aren't measuring correctly. OOL has a rate cap of 10MBit for downloads, and 1MBit (1024kbps/sec) for uploads. I got this info directly from the OOL tech that does the configuration files for the DOCSIS modems. That said, OOL still blows DSL out of the water around here.

Signed up for ATT @home on 12-19-2000. Was installed next day, lol. Installer was supposed to show up between 11:30am - 1:30pm, didn't show up till 4pm, left at 5pm. I called ATT @home and they were nice on the phone. got a local dude to call me and let me know what was wrong. Techs called in sick that day, so the techs that were there had to work more jobs. Install took about an hr as all the installer had to do was install the splitter and hook up the modem and set up TCP/IP on my G4 mac. Fly's!!!! I have no outages. Todays date is 12-24-2000. My line is benchmarked at 5mb - 8mb. I get download speeds from www.mp3.com of more then 600k per second. From www.driveway.com their free online hard drive, I get over 800k per second. 800k/sec. I downloaded RedHat linux 7 the iso images. When it started the download i was getting 1mb per second for a few minutes then it dropped ot 350k/sec. The ATT @home rocks in Tukwila, WA, 98188 zip code. for now that is. I test their support on their web site. www.tci.net which will redirect to the real address. I do the chat with us. Have tried it 4 times. Was connected with a live rep in under 3 minutes each time. People were nice and helpfull. No outages, not one problem. speed freaking screams!! is as fast as an 8mb line at times and not slow anywhere unless the site i'm at is slow. i can download multiple files at say 75k/sec each file. Done this with 2mb files, 10 files same time, each file, 75k-85k per second. same server, different files though. Have downloaded several mp3's that are say 5mb each. each file over 300k/sec. The only complaint I have is the ATT @home news feed. It SUCKS!! I see a news group has say 22 messages on @home, but with Earthlink news feed there are more then 100 messages by far. News group speed is great it seems. News feed is only problem with ATT @home that I can tell. Upload speed, even though it's 128k. Seems fine. I have connected to an online web host and used ftp to upload to web server. got 30k/sec to start and after a few minutes it slowed down to only 15k-20k/sec. i'm so excited at this. I looooove my cable modem so far!! Quake 3 online plays like it's local. But does jerk once in a while. My ping on Quake 3 was always less then 60. Sometimes 40. Is great for me. Love getting 300k/sec - 800k/sec, lol. member for 23.3 years, 498 visits, last login: 10.2 years ago lodged 23.3 years ago

Ordered in early November and got modem and install kit 3 days later. Up and running within a hour, including installing ethercard in my computer ( first time i ever installed anything inside computer! So far only one very short outage ( i think it was when i disconnected cable from splitter and modem had to resync ) so i was back up within a day. Speed is almost off the charts ( Top speed at 4800 kbps up and 981 kbps down ). At at least 10 dollars a month cheaper than dsl and much faster ( some of my upload speed is faster than dsl download! ) and much more reliable than Verizon dsl, its the best deal in the east, if not in the country. Re: Your Only as Fast as your Neighbor's USAGEThe quality of your service (DSL or cable) depends on many different factors. In my area(Long Beach, Ca)cable isn't worth a wooden nickel whereas everyone around me who has DSL has had pretty much a smooth ride(read the reviews for my area). It really isn't a good idea to make a blanket statement like "cable is taking DSL to hell" just because it's working good for you.
| | | | |
Re: Your Only as Fast as your Neighbor's USAGEIn New Jersey, Verizon (AKA Bell Atlantic) is a real pain in the behind. If you don't order *their* DSL then they basically make it as hard as possible for you to get DSL. I personally think the DOJ and all the government agencies should do some investigating into Verizons DSL practices, and not waste their time on Microsoft. Cablevision (my cable provider) is rolling out service where I am, and I plan on getting it when it becomes availible, I know it will slow down, but you know something? Verizon is insisting that I live to far from them to even get IDSL (144k).. and I only live 19,000 feet from them. So even if my cable service drops down to 1mb/sec it will still be much faster than what Verizon is willing to offer me.... NOTHING! -- =============== Jeff

Re: Your Only as Fast as your Neighbor's USAGEI couldn't agree with you more. If DSL service in your area is sub-par and cable works great in your area then go for it. If cable were the better option where I live then i'd probably be using it instead of DSL, but that's just not the case here as DSL beats it(again, i'm referring to my particular area) by a country mile.

Optimum Online is outrageous for gaming. Webhosting and servers are prohibited, but why do I care with all the free web hosting services out there?
Your allegation that the service will slow down as more people sign up is just propaganda from the DSL folks. When an area starts to slow down due to subscriber growth, Optimum Online adds another CMTS (cable modem termination system) and splits the subscribers between them. Even in areas that have had the service for years, speed is terrific.
In a couple of years, if the bean counters take over Optimum Online and the service becomes slower than DSL, I always have the option of switching. But given the outstanding job OOL is doing now, the choice between DSL and cable is a no-brainer.

I can't stand how DSL users always brag about the fact their lines aren't "shared". Not only does this just seem to me that they are jealous of their slower speeds, but they aren't even correct. How can you say that gaming isn't recommended for cable? Maybe it isn't for @home users or other companies, but with OOL I have the best ping on TFC servers. Unless you have SDSL, not ADSL your connection will not be good for hosting either. Also, I recieved a news article from Newsday, written by Lou Dolinar, which stated the speeds of various services, and concluded that OOL was not only fastest amoung the tested services, but OOL is the fastest downstream network in the nation. Mr. Dolinar pays $129 a month for Verizon DSL, since OOL is not available in his area yet. The service he gets for $130 is the same speed we get for $30 a month. So if you are saying DSL is better and you pay less than $100 you are so clueless it is quite amazing. OOL has so much bandwidth per neighborhood it is impossible to slow down to the basic 640/90 or whatever DSL speed. OOL is upgrading the nodes and everything even though there is no need as of yet. BTW, Verizon is a horrible company. My phone line barely works, so I'd hate to think of what DSL would be like. So why don't you DSL users stop making stupid comments about stuff you have no idea about.

I have been "online" with 56k for about 4 years or so. I started playing games about 3 years ago (quake1, quake2, now quake3). Waiting forever for pages to load, 180ms ping times, watching all my quake buddies get 50 pings, having to wait 20min to send a Photoshop file to someone...ick. I really wanted some type of broadband, OOL guys told me it would be ready Dec 2000. Out of no where (late October), I see Optimum Online is available. I run to the Wiz, buy the modem for $100 - sign zero (0) contracts and drive home. I plug it in, and do what is necessary for it to work. No sync, I call tech support - they send someone over the next day to check for a filter, no filter. The tech said my steet wasn't hooked up yet and it should be within a few days. 3 days pass, I get home from a long day of work to see my cable modem sync'd up. I reboot the computer, open my browser and watch dslreports.com instantly load up. I didn't know what to do, I was very glad to have ordered OOL. After a bit of RWIN tweaking I was receiving 5mb downloads and 1mb uploads. To top that off, since my friend has OOL out by Babylon - his pings were about 40-50ms to bunch of Quake 3 servers. So I was expecting the same. Well, it didn't work out like that. Instead I found out I was pinging 3-6ms across the OOL network and getting sub 20 pings to a few dozen Quake 3 servers. It was an awesome feeling. So far I have been up for 6 weeks, no down time. Speeds are great, and I'm still getting those 20 pings. 5mb down, 1mb up - $29 a month - no contracts - $100 modem. Where are you going to beat a deal like that? Dynamic IPs are assigned, I think there is a 3 hour lease. But I heard people getting MUCH longer. I leave my computer on, I have changed IP addresses once since the install (I decided to let the computer take a day nap while I went away). member for 23.9 years, 685 visits, last login: 21 years ago lodged 23.3 years ago
