I dumped cable for satellite because of the constant price increases, so it killed me to have to call them for broadband access. DSL in NOT available to me due to the fact that I am 19000 feet from the CO.
I got the service because dial-up was too slow.
When I originally signed up I was paying $29.95, because I do not subscribe to cable service. The offer at the time was a father's day special that gave me the self install kit with the modem and a network card, if I paid for a years worth of service in advance. They gave me vouchers to send in as payment for the monthly billed amount, this was fine for about three months, then they raised the price to $39.95, no big deal, I had paid for a year, or so I thought.
First they wanted to cancel my service because I was NOT paying the full amount each month, several calls to customer service, I get that straightened out, or so I thought.
Then a few months later the price goes up to $49.95 a month, and after a few more months I get a disconnect notice due to non-payment. Now I call customer service, explain that I have been sending in my payment coupons, and ask why they are not being credited to my account, the woman on the other end tells me that they are a little backlogged in crediting the vouchers to peoples bills. NOW I lose it, I explain that they BETTER make a note on my account that I am paid up for the WHOLE year, and I better NOT lose service.
All in all I would say that they did NOT handle things well at all.
If I had a choice I would NOT subscribe to Optimum Online again.
They have a SECRET cap that is imposed for unexplained reasons that appear to vary from node to node. If you violate this secret capping limit, you ARE capped; they do NOT inform you that you are capped unless you discover it yourself. Then they read you the riot act and make you jump through hoops, and then they remove the cap. Not the kind of company I want to keep dealing with, but right now I have no choice. Also they advertise that you can get 10Meg down and 1 Meg up, but they neglect to mention that the upload side is only useable in short bursts and only for short periods of time, anything longer and you will be capped.
If you have any other options, I would choose them OVER OOL.
::: UPDATE 02/17/05 :::
Since Christmas cablevision has been having speed issues system wide on the download side that can cut your downloads to 1/3 of the maximum speed. Calls to tech support have cablevision reporting no issues.
::: Update 03/02/05 :::
OOL has now come up with a new one; they now appear to throttle outside newsgroup downloads to 3K max after ten minutes. More on this as it unfolds.
::: Update 03/06/05 :::
They DO throttle, and this is under the pretext that they are exercising their rights under their TOS to protect the integrity of their network. I was considering getting VoIP from them, but due to this they can forget it...
::: 3/08/05 :::
I forgot to mention in my previous update that OOL was ALSO having DNS issues, as of this post they still appear to be having issues. I have revised all of my categories to a "1" since that is what I feel OOL has reduced their service to.
::: 3/09/05 :::
Just as mysteriously as the throttling started it was removed today, yet OOL still denies that they ever throttled anyones download side bandwidth. On a related note, the DNS issue also appears to have been resolved. Lets see what OOL has in store for tomorrow
::: 5/09/05 :::
Though I am not experiencing this, there have been reports over the past few weeks that peoples upper download speeds have been halved, OOL still claims that this is normal download speeds and that anything more is just icing on the cake, and should not be expected as normal download bandwidth. They even have gone so far as to revise their speed test to make anything above 4Meg down seem to be screaming speeds, down from what was once 6Meg. Again, if you have other options, like DSL or FIOS, check into those BEFORE you sign up for OOL.
::: 7/11/05 :::
Well I have to give OOL one on this, while others were having speed related issues these past few months, I appear to have avoided them. I would still advise anyone considering OOL to look elsewhere, as this is most likely just the calm before the storm...
::: 11/16/05 :::
OOL recently put out a press release on new speeds and prices, problem is MOST if not all of the mentioned speeds will not be available for another six months! Bad propaganda move on OOL's part, right now it is just a promise, no one is reporting actually getting any speed boost. One thing they HAVE done is start moving people to QAM 256, which is suppose to increase available bandwidth on the node, and decrease congestion on the node.
::: 11/21/05 :::
I have seen my download side speeds drop by 1/3, similar to the speed drop I posted about last year at Christmas time. This only started in the last few days. I will be watching this closely...
::: 12/8/05 :::
The speed drop appears to be related to an overloaded node, which is exacerbated when children in my area are on vacation for the holidays. On a happier note, I was just upgraded last night to 15/2 for free (Though I do believe that this is only because FIOS is due in my area soon), due to the fact that I am probably the only one in my area who has realized that they pushed through the upgrade, I am presently able to get the full 15Meg down.
::: 3/1/06 :::
Shortly after OOL started to upgrade people to 15/2, there were reports that the dreaded capping policy may have been canceled. Many people were reporting that they had been using the service for many days at full throttle without any ill effects. People were even using the new Boost 30/2 service at full speed with no signs of a cap. Things were starting to look up for OOL, until one day someone reported that they had been capped and this was a user on the Boost service too. As it stands now, it appears that OOL is still using the same capping algorithm to cap people, even the capped bandwidth limit is the same 150K upload pipe. So it appears that though OOL has opened up their network to a larger pipe, they still appear to be unable to handle the bandwidth.
::: 9/20/06 :::
OOL recently upgraded all Boost users from the 2Meg upload pipe to a 5Meg upload pipe, so for all the users of Boost this is great news, but only if you DON'T use it. Capping is still in effect in Optimum land, so a bigger pipe only means a faster road to a cap. OOL is still having DNS issues, so most people have moved to non-OOL DNS servers. In my book, if they are still having DNS issues, what else is still having problems? Speeds in my area still are variable due to what I believe is an oversold node. Oversold nodes are the norm in OOL land so just be aware of it if you are considering signing up for the service.
I am still awaiting FIOS in my area, so that I will be able to switch, and get away from the draconian capping policies of OOL.
::: 2/1/07 :::
The DNS servers have become so bad that people are advising all who read the forums here to use other avenues for DNS. One good note, no one on Boost 30/5 has reported being capped, so there may be hope for OOL yet. OOL Ultra appears to be in the testing phase, a few users have posted that they have it installed. 50/50 service would be nice, not sure of the price yet though, some debate on that.
::: 5/14/07 ::: Still no capping on the 30/5 service, though there have been users reporting caps on the 15/2 service. Ultra is still apparently in testing, and now is rumored to be business only for now. My attitude towards OOL service has not changed either. Avoid it if you have other options, and DON'T call tech support unless you are willing to play their games to get your problem resolved.
::: 7/28/07 ::: No big changes, issues abound on the network but they appear to be isolated as opposed to system wide issues. No change in capping, either they are no longer capping, which I doubt or the people who are getting capped don't know it or are not reporting it... I can't report on the status of the OOL DNS servers as I have abandoned them a while ago. I am seeing what I believe to be congestion issues though, as I have intermittent stops and starts when accessing pages on the net.
::: 12/29/07 ::: Some good news and bad news to report. The good news is that capping appears to be a thing of the past, no one in the past year has reported a verifiable case of capping. Many people have tested the waters so to speak to see if they could get capped and none of them have been capped. The bad news on the other hand is quite bad, the yearly slowdown of the network is back with a vengeance, and I will opt that it is system wide this time. A lot of people in different areas are reporting speed drops to half or one third of what OOL advertises. A slowdown at this time of year is somewhat expected, considering all the kids who are home from school for the holidays, but these kinds of speed drops are unacceptable, and should not be tolerated. No reports of these types of speed drops in FIOS land. As such my overall opinion of OOL has not changed, get it if you must, but expect issues, and avoid it at all costs if you can.
::: 1/23/08 ::: The bad news continues, the yearly slowdown of the network is still with us as of this date, and it appears that it is system wide. A lot of people in different areas are still reporting speed drops to less than one third of what OOL advertises. A slowdown at this time of year is not normal, considering all the kids are no longer home from school for the holidays, these kinds of speed drops are unacceptable, and should not be tolerated, yet OOL appears unfazed by the numerous complaints, blaming it on the user's network, PC or the router they are using. As such my overall opinion of OOL still has not changed, get it if you must, expect issues, and avoid it at all costs.
::: 2/29/08 ::: The speed issues continue, and I am not alone in this. Many users across the OOL network are reporting severe speed issues with both tiers from OOL. I myself have been upgraded to BOOST by OOL staff while they work on my speed issues. I have seen my speeds drop to as low as 1.5Meg during tests with OOL techs. Even with BOOST I still see speeds that are as low as one third of the those offered in the tier.
::: 07/22/09 ::: Nothing new to report, OOL is still the same old OOL I have reported about for years now. Sad thing is, I am stuck with OOL because my locality has not been bribed properly to allow Verizon to install FIOS. One nice feature to report on is the inception of OOL Ultra, 101/15 Meg service. It comes with a poison pill though, a $300 "Activation" fee! The yearly Christmas slow down of the network is still a reality, and starts just before Thanksgiving and lasts until late February to early March. No other big changes in my service either...

| Re: Optimum Online SUCKSSS!! Business OOL has the same policy as of home users. Just because your business doesn't mean your speed would be higher. All business is really that you can have a tech at your home within 2-4 hours. That's all really.
And again, Optimum Online does not cap, they Throttle. There's a difference. Now if you guys want to be stubborn and not know what the differences are, hey that's your problem.
And it's funny how the people that do get throttled, 97% of the time, they are doing something illegal. Uploading Warez etc etc etc. So why all the complaining? And the trained by monkeys comment, how uncivilized are you really? Typical talk from low class people. =) . I'm happy. For you guys not reaching those speeds
1) reset the modem
2) bypass the router (stop being stubborn)
3) call in, might be a signal issue
4) make sure you dont have p2p or spyware running in the background of your pc
5) replace modem
now if your throttled, tuff cookies. If you were uploading warez then you deserved it (which no one will ever admit to)

As for the speed complaints, its not a system-wide network failure or whatever you're saying. OOL is a hybrid coax-fiber network, with fiber up to the node. Your individual speed depends on how close you are to the node. The huge majority of customers have close to or sometimes over the speed limits (15Mb standard or 30Mb w/Boost).
Also, you all seem to shrug off the whole "they blame the router or my pc." - 90% of the time as a technician troubleshooting slow speeds, when I bypass the router or run an FTP check (non browser-based and not affected by slow ass computers), the speed jumps way up, and still people refuse to believe it. Its not easy dealing with pricks like yourselves on a daily basis, and trying to do the best you can while being limited by what you're allowed to do.

We have no other options for high speed here, so we're captives. We have regular Optonline, with iO and Opt Voice Intermittent low signal associated problems, ongoing since 2002. Not resolved.
Update Dec 2008: Outside techs did spend several concurrent months this year, and for the most part it does now work. Video dropouts rare, but internet and phone still occasionally dropout just long enough to lose your conversation or your download. It is better than previously. It just seems that for the money, it should be nearly flawless.
Update Aug 2009: nothing new to report, other than rate increases.

| Cablevision has dropped the ball We used to have fast service all the time. About a month and a half ago, I got yet another spam call from Cablevision trying ot sell me the triple play. I told the woman right away I was not interested in their phone service. She insisted that I tell her why, to which I responded it wasn't any of her business. So about a week or so ago, the internet service simply stopped in the middle of the day. I got them right on the phone, and the person on their end seemed puzzled. He explained that it appeared that we didn't have internet service. Now, I never canceled the service, and at this point I was sure this had something to do with the rude woman trying to sell me something I didn't want. There is no doubt in my mind that she spitefully had the internet service canceled because of what I said to her on the phone.
So, the guy on the other end of the line handled getting the internet service going again, which only wasted a half hour of my time. However, ever since they hooked me back up, the line speed during evening hours is no better than dial up. It's fine during the middle of the night and mostly during the day, but between 5 PM and 12 AM, it is very slow. I have called several times to complain about this, but all I get is script reading fools who don't know what they are doing. They insist it isn't them, but MY router. Now, I sometimes work as a network engineer, and I have thoroughly tested my in house system, and it is working exactly the same way it has been for the last 5 years, but you can't truly explain that to a moron who can only read from a script. I am fed up with Cablevision. I'm seriously thinking about going with Speakeasy at this point, even though it's slightly more expensive.

Update: Late August 2009
I got the Ultra High Speed Package when it came out. I had the speeds they advertised for about 6 hours. After that, it dropped to worse than Boost. After more than 10 calls, and 4 service appointments, still no resolution.
Am switching to AT&T U-verse next week. I can live with the slower speed, and the deal they offered me is less than half of what I'm paying now. Goodbye Cablevision. You sucked as an employer, and you suck even worse as a provider.
Update: September 2008
Had some small issues with the connection dropping. Suspected the modem and/or splitter, but didn't have the time to deal with it. Well, it died. At the worst time. I had dropped my cell phone, and had a tropical storm coming in. I call tech support, and got through in 5 minutes (hate their phone queue). I explained to them that I had worked for CV before, so he didn't bother with the garbage. he set me up with a same day appointment, and the tech was there in 2 hours. Tech replaced the modem and the splitter, and was good to go. No issues since then.
I used to work for Cablevision Tech Support. I originally got the service as part of an employee perk. Back then, I was paying about 25 bucks a month for 3 boxes, Optimum Online w/Boost, and Optimum Voice.
Now that I don't work for them, I can review their service
Speeds have been good. I do get the 5 minute maintainance cutoffs about 1/week around 2 am though, which is annoying, but understandable.
Optimum Voice gets static every once in a while. And the annoying calls from CV sales, but then, I have the whole package already?
Good service, poor customer service.

CVSN customer since 1999
Even though the service guys aren't too swift that have come to the house, I have been able to get online pretty quickly.
Unfortunately I am a network engineer, and I have little tolerance for stupid. Talking to me like a child, and telling me the 'noise on the line' is causing the network speed to be 'just as it is, sometime a problem' is a poor excuse. I don't like that when a tech is cornered into getting something to work, as it should work, as I have paid for, he 'needs' to call Syosset to get approval.
After much complaining and visiting the Cable store 3x, I managed to get a new modem and install it and it works fine.
I recently moved all my phones to OV and no longer have a Verizon analog line.
So we may complain, but, its all we got. My relatives in NC are lucky to get 500k downloads on a good day.

OptimumOnline still has the best speed available in this area, and the triple play price is excellent. Cablevision still doesn't know how to run a server, and they don't know how to relate to paying customers. Their inablity to properly notify customers of outages, past, present or future is a problem that they are aware of and seem either unwilling or incapable of correcting. Their nebulous capping algorhythm - installing an upstream bandwidth cap for TOS violations - are implemented for seemingly UNKNOWN reasons. Nobody knows how much and what type of TOS violations will trip the cap.
I'm seeing close to the full 15000 kbps/2000 kbps on speed tests. Install went well. Only one outage for 2 hours this past week - customer service was unreachable during the outage (from my cell phone it reached a recording that due to high call volume Cablevision can not answer their phones at this time).
Now to the good part of all this: They're better than all the existing alternatives. Verizon has DSL available - at 1500kbps, they told me I don't qualify for 3000kbps at this location (even though I'm only a few blocks from my old house that did, and both are FAR SHORT of the max distance required for 3000kbps, no matter HOW they measure it). Verizon's DSL speed is not competitive to Cablevision's Optonline.
Now for the BEST PART: Verizon FIOS is being installed in this area while I type this message (January 23rd 2007). This area is the first in Brooklyn with active FIOS build-out. I'm anxiously awaiting word that I can order. I've already switched from Cablevision to Verizon and back to Cablevision once. I'm pretty sure that once FIOS is installed I'll REMAIN a Verizon FIOS customer.
8/7/09 - I'm now a Cablevision customer once again, thanks to a Cablevision "win-back" promotion that offered so much for so little, that it made no sense NOT to switch back.
I'm now paying $115 for the triple play with the Silver (HBO/Starz/Encore) package with a DVR and two additional recievers, a year of the MLB baseball package, and Boost upgrade.
The bad: It took over two months to get reimbursed as promised by Cablevision the $120 that Verizon charged me for early termination. During this time CV did EVERYTHING they could to piss me off - nobody acknowledged receipt of the documentation I sent (multiple times) until I finally threatened disconnection.
The good: CV's outsourced and horribly choked usenet server is now GREAT compared to Verizon's no-binary-group offering. Thanks Andrew Cuommo - whatever ticket you run on from now on will have me voting against it from now on.
OOL - With Boost I'm getting about 26 to 28mbps, with much variability from 12mbps to 30mbps depending on when the test is performed.I'm guessing that there are others sharing my node that are competing for bandwidth. I don't do much game playing so latency I haven't checked in months.
OOV - no complaints - as steady as FiOS telephone was except for one overnight outage where the modem wasn't syncing from about 1AM until about 4:30AM.
iO - its the same as I've come to expect from Cablevision - a horribly slow and clumsy guide but otherwise not bad. I wish they'd re-align the channels to make better sense when surfing - move all the HBO's to 300's, the news channels should all be together, etc.
Would I go back to FiOS - yes - if the price makes sense. I do miss the steadier speeds.

People might think that the BOOST tier of Optimum Online (30/5 mbit) can compete with Verizon FiOS. They should think again.
Not only are speeds terribly inconsistent, but packet loss, timeouts, and outages are the norm. Furthermore, it is extremely difficult to get good upload speeds on torrents, effectively making the 5 mbit upload worthless.
Maybe I am spoiled by FiOS (see my review in 07666), but this service is horrible. Unfortunately, I am stuck with it since I moved from Teaneck to New Brunswick, and now have to suffer.

There still great. Thanks for always being online.

Having had OOL for two years now, I can't really say enough about how good it is. Regardless of the issues some may have with the recent introduction of capping for upload bandwidth abuse, I feel OOL is STILL the best service for the money.
I see the speeds below consistently; the OOL speed test on the OOL forum seems more reliable, giving me a 1MB dl result most of the time.
2003-01-14 23:31:05 EST: 7826 / 834
Your download speed : 7826947 bps, or 7826 kbps.
A 955.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 834492 bps, or 834 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
The install process was extremely simple--got the install package directly from our local CV office, which included (at that time) the Sharkfin modem. We had OOL up and running within an hour. I have since purchased a Toshiba PCX1100U modem, which increased my speeds from the 5000dl range to what they are now. Other than one issue of a s/n ratio problem which was resolved with an upgrade to my area, I've had no major issues. The occasional outage is very rare and so far, have been short lived. Some people have had serious, recurring e-mail problems but I've only had a problem a few times. E-mail not being delivered, being delayed, or servers down.
The few times I've had to contact tech support have been either an excellent experience or a nightmare, depending on who answered the call. That area could be improved in my opinion. Also, you generally have to wait on hold for an unacceptable amount of time before actually talking to someone.
As my contract has just expired in December, I am expecting a rate increase shortly, but even so, compared to what else is out there, OOL wins out, hands down.
4/17/05 My monthly rate increased as expected. Despite complaints from a handful of people regarding a drop in OOL speeds, my experience continues to be excellent, top notch, with NO drop in speeds. I would still recommend OOL to anyone. I have also had Vonage VoIP service for almost year, and it has been rock solid and stable with OOL as well. I also now have a second modem, a SB5100, running to my computer while my son uses the Toshiba for his PlayStation, both off of the same OOL line (both on my OOL account), and my speeds remain solid even when he is playing.
10/13/06 Updating since moving on 9/1/06. Had a brand new install at my new home, now in NJ. The install tech showed up right on time. This house had cable line previously installed, but the cable needed to be replaced and changed because of where we wanted our tv's/computers. The tech spent a good 3 hours here, changing everything around. He installed a new modem and hooked up my laptop to it (my main PC had not been moved in yet) and made sure everything was up and running as it should be. In the six weeks I've been here, my speeds with the new 15/2 tier have been great, I've had no speed drops or disconnects. I also moved my Vonage line with me and that is working perfectly as well with this solid connection. Nothing much has changed for me, I still am very happy with OOL and the service. All in all, it has been a good experience.
3/15/07 Boost....upgraded to Boost (30/5) service a few months ago. Again, everything is working exactly as advertised. I'm getting great speeds, both download and upload. I'm using a Linksys WRT54GS router. Vonage still working great. My upgrade was very simple. I did it right online at the OOL website. It took about 10 minutes for them to push the upgrade to me. I did have to reboot my modem (SAWebstar), which not everyone has to do, but that was it. Very painless. If you don't mind paying a few extra dollars, and you have use for increased speed, Boost is well worth it. Unlike the 15/2 tier, it also comes with webspace, which I haven't had the opportunity to try yet.
12/26/07 Still with OOL/Boost, no issues to report. Getting great speeds, both DL and UL. I have no complaints at all. If you are looking for that extra speed, this is the way to go. General service is solid, rarely any outages (I've had an occasional hiccup for a few minutes here and there, but not long enough to even call about....weather related? Work on their end?). Highly recommend OOL/Boost.
1/3/09 Still using OOL and having no issues or problems to report. Down time is virtually non existent. I did go back to non Boost since I moved, but will be going back to Boost. I get the speeds I pay for.
7/26/09 Still with OOL, no issues or problems to report. The service is great. I decided not to go back to Boost to save a few $$, plus my connection works so well, I didn't feel I even needed it. I would still highly recommend OOL to anyone.

I have had optimum online since 4/98. It has steadily gotten better since then. The new fiber optic cable installed in 2000 plus my new computer with windows XP have given me 8000 + KB/s downloads off of Speakeasy. I have had very few service outages (under 5) in five years. Since 6/03 the Speakeasy speeds are down to about 7200. OOL speed test is around 1.02 meg/sec 3/29/04--has been erratic at times with slow speeds (1500kbps) and unexplained modem disconnects. Speeds on OOL ftp are down to just under 1 meg/sec. 10/16/04-as more people go on my node my ftp speeds have slipped to around 940. 4/17/2005-I have to down grade my opinion of OptimumOnline. When every one comes home from work or on weekends (They seem to have overloaded this node)my OOL ftp speeds go down around 500..I was spoiled by the over 1 meg speeds of over a year ago.
11/08/05-I have got to hand it to CV, they have put me right back to where I was at before the slow downs. OOL ftp downloading at 1.10MB/PS during non peak hours and over 1.03 peak. It hasn't gone down in I can't remember when. I would say that they are delivering all that they promised and then some....I rate them GOLD.
04/10/2007-The service I pay for is 15000/2. I routinely beat the 15000..in the neighborhood of 16000 to 18000. I get 1.79MB on the OOL download test. The upload speed is another thing entirely. I have never gotten what I am supposed to get. Currently, I get about 1700 to 1850.
6/26/08-Not much new to add. My speeds are back down to the advertised max, i.e. my OOL download test shows 1.5MB on average.
7/24/09- Optonline is still a very reliable and fast ISP. OOl download tested a few minutes ago showed 1.54MB.
