Contract price not specified.
"always on fast very good service"
"intial install had some hitches"
"comcast offers a lot of value"

comcast gave me 12 months of a discounted rate of the blast package. I routinely get 16mb down and 2mb up. But when I test it I sometimes get way more than 2mb up. That's quite generous in my opinion. when I need to call support everyone is very friendly. They came out when they said they would. I brought my own modem and they helped me get it online. For the money, I think their product beats ATT in my region.

Getting a low latency, high bandwidth internet connection for a low price. Connection is solid. Get 14 down and 2 up. At&t Dsl can't offer me the same value.

I've had Comcast ever since it became available when it was Adelphia in my area, so this is not a new installation. I just got a mailer from Comcast saying they just doubled my speed, and to reset the modem to pick up the change.

I'm now getting 8Mb down and up to 1.5Mb up after a few quick checks in the evening. Sweet. I'm paying $42.95 for internet, in a bundle with analog TV.

With the transition from Time Warner to Comcast I was a little doubtful then my fears came true I had 6-7 hour outages (TV and Internet) for 2 weeks customer service was clueless why they were having trouble in my area. To top things off they raised our rates this is very frustrating because I can't get DSL I plan to downgrade to basic cable and keeping the internet because its to damn expensive.

UPDATE: I would have to say I'm impressed with the reliability. Since the last time I reviewed I can only think of one time it went down (And only for a hour). Also I have been unable to get power boost even though it is available in my area. Which is not a big deal but I would like to have it. The Digital Cable still have been a issue it goes down more frequently then with TWC but with the new programing and vast improvement of On Demand service (Including the many free things available) I still like it. My major gripe is they promised no price increases and they've had 2-3 now.

Overall I'm pretty satisfied and looking forward to DOCSIS 3.0 in the next year or so.

UPDATE: I recently upgrade to Blast! (16/2 in my area) tier and I'm really impressed with my speeds which have been advertised and a little more at all times. I purchaced a Motorola SB5101 when circuit city was closing and its been flawless and I'm able to get power boost finally with speeds around 25/3 on power boost.

in this area there is not too many choices for internet. Qwest is just plain highway robbery and comcast is high but offers a better quality and more options. i ordered the ultra which is 22000/kbs and barely get 3000 in low traffic parts of the day but my upload is about the same, advertised 5000\kbs. ordering was easy and the install was quick and informative. i received standard comcast modem, dvr and cable boxes which is engineered by motorola. i have had no down time and in my first residence i had connection issues but the service techs quickly resolved them, but i still do not get my ordered speeds

possible cause for low internet speeds

a majority of speed issues with cable modems can be attributed to inside wiring and not the cable service itself. read the cable wiring guide here on bbr: »Cable Modems and Wiring Issues

what are your snr and power levels on the modem? go to 192.168.100.1 and go to the signals page. you if it's not already on the splitter closest to the service drop, move it there. order of priority of connections should be: CDV box, cable modem (assuming you have separate CDV and internet devices), then tv boxes.

Re: possible cause for low internet speeds

thank you very much for the info. i had done all that i knew to get it up to speed but i am no geek or anything. after reading a couple of articles i noticed that maybe i should have gotten a modem so i called comcast to see what their prognosis was after trying to send the signal a few times and all that la di dah they sent an tech out. after coming in and diagnosis he tried a new cable line to the house and i currently have 2 of their modems one being a docsis, 3 for my internet and a standard one to run the rest of my services needless to say i am pushing upwards 52\mbs down and holding ay 4.5 average for upload. now here is a problem i am having i have a ps3 and on most games i can run in and shoot people with a whole clip and they will not die yet they could sneeze on me and i'm dead is there a forum or some person who could help me configure my router to be linked more reliable or someyhing . thank you

Update 11/14/09: Things continue to go very smoothly. Seem to have settled into about 5000 kbps down and 1800 kbps up. DL seems to vary but UL has been pretty stable. What I have been most happy with (particularly given a lot of what I read online about Comcast before taking the plunge) is that the service has been remarkably stable and consistent. Other than the one minor glitch mentioned below, the service has been up consistently since I installed it.

One glitch (minor) after having Comcast HSI for about a month: One night, my cable boxes all had updated messages about an upcoming channel change. Apparently, as a result of that my cable modem got messed up and was not working correctly. I tried a reset (unplug modem, wait about a minute, replug) with no luck. Called Comcast, they ran me through similar "cable modem voodoo" with no success and offered to send a tech out. No thanks. I unplugged the modem for about 20-30 mins and then when I replugged it came back and has been fine ever since. I am still quite happy, overall, with the Comcast HSI.

I have had DSL since about May of 2003 from a local provider and, although I was happy with the service, I was wanting faster speeds. My ISP told me that the 768/128 I was getting was the best they could do (I live on the edge of town in a rural area), and there were no plans to upgrade in the future. Comcast has been offering HSI for the past year or two, so I began to investigate Comcast cable Internet. I must admit that, initially, I was pretty sure I was not going to change service providers because of all the negative comments about Comcast that are all over the Internet. However, I spent a couple of weeks searching on various web sites and found at least *some* information that suggested I could get Comcast's service to work. I decided to buy a new Airport base station to replace my original from 2003 and I purchased a Motorola Surfboard SB 5101 Cable Modem (Comcast charges $3.00 a month for rental and I got the SB 5101 for - no kidding - $51.01. I set up a new network with the Comcast HSI so that, if something went wrong during the install (reports I read on the Internet suggested that was a definite possibility), I could still use my DSL to surf the Internet for information.

I picked up my "self install" kit on Friday, August 28 and installed the splitter and had everything else ready for the install but the modem did not arrive until late Friday evening so I waited until the next morning to do the install. I connected the modem on Saturday morning and called Comcast with the modem MAC address and serial number. The first person I talked with had trouble getting the modem to be recognized and, when she tried to transfer me, we lost our connection. When i called back, I spoke with an *extremely* helpful and patient rep who was able to get the modem fired up and, when I was not able to connect with my laptop, was able to help me troubleshoot my connection. (It seems that somehow the Proxy settings were changed in my Network System Preferences. Once we turned those off, things worked fine.) I shut down the modem, went out to run an errand, returned a short time later and connected my Airport to the modem and got the wireless network up and running very quickly.

I went from download speeds of around 580-700 kbps and uploads around 120 kbps to downloads of 5000+ (I've been over 7000) and uploads in the 2400-2500 range (and have been over 4000). I will pay $19.95 for the first 6 months, $42.95 thereafter. This compares to $44.95 for my DSL (DSL included a modem, Comcast does not). I still think the deal is very good. It is too early to say how reliable the service will be, but thus far I have had no problems. I will try to update this review if I do run into any problems, Thus far, my experience with Comcast has been good.

    Also so far so good...

I'm in Tazewell county and also got my service running on August 28th. I am also leaving DSL for cable, but my DSL speeds would be in the 6000 - 8000 Kbps range.

I am on the 12,000 Kbps down plan with their Triple Play.
Right off the bat I got around 20,000 Kbps. I've been doing speed tests a couple times a day to see if I would keep getting those insane speeds....but....no such luck!

My speeds seem to be all over the place. Most of the time I'm only in the 6000 range. I did the on-line chat with a Comcast rep and he told me they guarantee at least 80% of the speed for the package I'm paying for. I did the math and 80% means it should never go below 9600 Kbps. He also said that speeds in the 6000 range were unacceptable and they are sending a technician out to check the line for me.

I understand that the speeds can/will fluctuate, but I think a range of 6000 to 20,000 is a lot....and apparently they do too!

My previous review was largely positive. My how things have changed.

First, some history. I'm in a relatively new condo complex, and the options here are Comcast (DOCSIS 3.0) or Qwest (ADSL2+).

For the last 18 months, I've been fighting random connection dropouts with Comcast.

These dropouts last 5-10 seconds. Not too bad if you're downloading files, killer for using SSH or (worse yet) playing online games. 10 seconds of disconnect in a WoW arena means a loss, pretty much every time.

This has happened to me so many times that I now refer to losses caused by connectivity issues as "being Comcasted".

The frequency of these issues is inconsistent. Sometimes it happens once or twice a week (which is acceptable), sometimes it happens 10+ times in one day. I had a friend over yesterday and we lost 10 games because of this problem before giving up for the night.

Signal levels are great (44dBmV up, around 0dBmV down). I have had numerous tech visits. All of my cable, splitters (two 2-way splitters), and connectors from the box on the side of the condo building to my modem have been replaced.

I have used multiple routers and multiple cable modems. I thought that the problem might be "modem drift" (dynamic channel changes), but it's not - my DOCSIS 3.0 modem drops out without changing channel.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing that Comcast can do about my problem. Customer support reps can confirm the problem, which affects my voice service as well.

I called about the problem again, last night, for the 10th or 15th time (I've lost track). Comcast offered to send another technician. Frankly, that sucks. At that point I didn't want more technician visits, I wanted the problem fixed.

After the call, my friend and I drove to the Qwest store and got a DSL modem. The modem was free, I get 12Mbps DSL for $47/mo for the next 12 months ($55/mo thereafter, which is comparable to Comcast without TV/phone).

Will the Qwest DSL be slower than the 22/5 I have right now? Yes, by quite a bit. It's also going to have inferior latency unless I can be put on fastpath.

But you know what? If it doesn't cut out randomly for 5 seconds at a time, it will be worth it. I'm tired of being told that my line is fine and that everything is working. I want an Internet connection that delivers packets 100% of the time. No one would put up with an electrical grid that randomly stops working for 5-10 seconds at a time every so often (and sometimes several times in the same day).

FYI, the problems seem to occur more frequently on Friday and Saturday nights, which is (incidentally) when we play WoW arenas.

    LAGCAST

    @comcast.net

    High LATENCY....NOT good for GAMING

I have had Comcast Cable internet since 2002. Ever since they started offering phone service OVER CABLE, the lag has become unbearable. The COD4/42 games are almost unplayable online. The other players characters move like stick-figure theater. XBOX Live should FORCE Comcast into 40ms Latency or less!!!
