For months, COMCAST@home has been "coming soon" in my neighborhood.
(I'm too far from the CO for any decent DSL. Covad wouldn't try and
Northpoint would only try for 144K -- not really worth it.)
I returned from vacation to find a post card advertising COMCAST as ready in my area (near Annapolis MD). I phoned to check
and signed up in just a couple of minutes. UPS delivered the self-install kit in
about 5 days. (A splitter, cables, modem, USB interface and CDs.)
Phoned in the MAC address, Plugged
it in, and ran through the install (IE 5.5 included) without notable problems.

I had one nuisance where pop-ups from the old "Dial-Up Networking" kept
appearing. I didn't know offhand where to kill them, so I called tech support:
Tier 1 answered in about 3 rings(!). Tier 1 didn't know the answer and didn't
waste any of my time, but immediately passed me on to Tier 2. After 3 or 4
minutes a nice lady picked up and immediately guided me to the spot to fix
it and I was off and running. (good on 'ya, @Home)

DSL Reports speed tests show 799K dn/118K up without tweaking, and the tools
don't indicate that any tweaking is called for. Cost is $19.95
special for 3 months (plus $7 modem rental), then it jumps to $32.95. Since I'll
be able to drop my 2nd phone line, the cost is not too bad.
I'll probably be looking to buy a modem and dodge the $7 rental.

    So far, so good.
We'll see what happens as more subscribers get on board.

I called and was able to arrange installation of a cable modem easily at a convenient time. They came on time and installed the modem. However, I do not have an Internet connection. After several calls and no progress, I was referred to "second-level support". This turned out to be a series of menus to go through, at the end of which I was simply cut off. So I tried email support. Got a quick answer, but they said that email support is not yet available for my area (which not so long ago changed cable providers). They gave me another telephone number to call. That number does not even answer. So I have a useless cable modem, and my wall and ceiling disfigured by the cable they put up. In addition, they block all support information on the Web unless you are successfully connecting from an @home connection.

The only issues that I have are. 1. Mail is some times slow. 2. I got my modem on a saturday and I had to wait until Monday to get it setup and get my machine name. 3. It's a bit to expensive.

I am basically happy with Comcast@home, however it could be better. I wish they would raise the cap on the upload to at least 1000mbs instead of the current 128k. Otherwise is up probably 96% of the time and mostly trouble-free. I can usually tell when it is time for them to increase their capacity, because the service will be slow for up to two weeks at a time.

    I have service.
Three hours after the "within ten minutes" scurry home, the Tech. arrived. Very pleasant fellow, not an employee of Comcast. And within a few short hours after that, I was up and running.
    Kind of.
In the process of installing the extra nic card, my video card was blown out.
So we installed on another computer.
And tested. On the machine still hooked up to the dsl line and the other computer on the cable modem, the tech and I would enter a site simultaneously. Five out of six times the dsl-machine beat the cable modem.
    Interesting start.

Because my mommy always wanted me to say something nice about everyone, here goes. Comcast must be dedicated to the enviornment. It apparently doesn't like to waste paper. To this end, it did not provide me with a single piece of paper extolling, or even describing its services, how to access mail, how to set up mail boxes. Nothing. Not even a piece of paper with the my account/email password.

In summary: I only hope there is a special place in the afterlife for the officers and directors of monopolies, and especially those officers and directors who use voice mail and sophisticated telephone systems as a shield against customer complaints or even inquiries, and who use those same systems as a sword to pierce the desires of their customers for service.

    +++++++++++++++++++

Now a month later. Still no Comcast. I called the President of the Company. Was assured that the tech would be here shortly, wthin ten minutes.
I took a taxi home. The Tech. called and said the would be here shortly.
Now two hours later. No tech. No service.
I am going to sit around, having left work for the fourth time.
I don't expect service. There is a reason that monopolies are not favored in our legal system.
I would sooner accept the word of a used car salesman, wearing a polyester suit, extolling the virtues of a wrecked car with no tires and no engine, than accept the word of anyone from Comcast.
(Parenthetically, they just called -- apparently they cannot find the tech.)
I guess I will call my lawyer.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am an unhappy Verizon DSL customer. This is because the mail server, when it works, works slowly and the service is often no better than dial-up.

For these reasons I decided to subscribe to Comcast's Cable Modem service despite the horror stories of my friends (including one friend who continues to get billed for service unavailable in his building, and for which he must pay lest his cable TV be disconnected).

To this date, I have not received service.

Its sales people often do not speak English fluently. They are unknowledgable about the nature of the service, its cost, or its features.

Appointments are made, and broken, without the courtesy of a phone call or an attempt to reschedule. It will lie to you ("our man was there, you weren't" was repeated despite the fact that I did not leave the house during the entire 5 hour period> It will be confused ("your street does not exist"). It will be indignant ("You don't live on Xyz Street, you live onAbc Street".

I must, however, say something nice. It has found an effective way to deal with customer complaints. First, each clerk must read the entire file before discussing any matter with you. And this reading must be done several times while you wait. But most ingeniously, it has apparently hired supervisors who are incapable of either hearing or speaking, and thus are unable to speak with you under any circumstances. Apparently they may stand behind the poor phone clerk, perhaps communicating by smoke signals.

I haven't had any problems with Comcast (yet). I signed up in Jan. 2001 and it's already the middle of March and I haven't used their "technical support" once. Although, these days people are throwing around the term "technical support" like it actually means what it says. I was previously with Innercite DSL and although it was cheaper, they were never reliable. Their "Technical Support" was more of a counselor than anything else. Anyways, I pay a little more but it's worth it because it's fast(in my area, at least) and reliable. Speed is 2500 down and 100 up. Install was quick and easy. No contract so I can cancel anytime.

I had DSL for about 2 months, then speakeasy "accidentally" cancelled my order, so I had to re-order, 2 days later, they told me I cant get it(was 13k ft. told me I was 15,8000 ft 2 months later), I'm too far away, bunch of bullshit, I had it, it was working, altho those tech support were good, and a slaes rep. (HI SHERLENE! She got a sekzy voice :P) so I called and order comcast cable...said I had to get cable TV, so I did, no big deal, wanted it anyway. 3 day after the cable TV installation, a guy came, installed in like 30min,in and out, w00t! gave me a "DOXport 111" sorta modem. I am getting like 300+KB/sec down and about 360kbps/sec for upload, pretty nice, lets hope it stays that way, or even get better. One thing I dont like is the DHCP, I thought I HAD to use DHCP, so my networking didnt quite work out, until I tried to enter the ips, DNS, gateway, etc manually, which I like! The price WAS $38.90 I think, but the guy who installed it said they was gonna make me pay a ne wrate, $45.70($50 if include extra ip) or soemthing, also, I had to get an extra ip for the networking, and it costs alot, stupid money whores ;/ speakeasy gives ips for $3 anyway, cable is ok, but I'd like it better if comcast allowed me to custom the DNS of my ips, or gib me full auth. >:P Well, thats about it, it's a good experience after all. And a big EFF YOU SEEE KAY to speakeasy for being such a whores, except Sherlene! and a KISS MY EFF YOU SEE KAY EI EN GEE Ass to BA or whoever the hell my CO was. DIE DIE DIE! People in my area: DONT GET COMCAST, OR I WILL OWN YOU WITH MY 14.4 THAT STILL WORKS! >;/ Cause I want the line to myself!

their service is really pathetic. it has no reliablity and it also has no speed to it. on a good night, i can get 10-15KB/sec downloads (128kbps) and i'm supposed to have 1.5Mbps down. this is a really sad ISP and i HIGHLY recommend against using comcast@home... and basically @home in general.

My DSL provider, Telocity wasted 2 months of my time "working" on installing my DSL. I cancelled that service (see my review here at dslreports.com) and switched to Comcast @home.

I had the cable modem and Quick Start self install kit in 3 days from my call. The Quick Start kit included the modem, a cable splitter, some easy instructions, and the cabling. Was real simple. I am running Linux, so they gave me all the info I needed, (static IP, host name, etc). I just don't like the fact you are "forced" into installing their software.

Plugged it in, no link light. Called tech support, they were helpful. They explained a tech would have to come out to the house. Said they were backed up, and could get someone out within 4 days. (that's backed up?? I wish Telocity was that "backed up") I was expecting another month long delay.

Four days later, tech comes out and does something to the junction box on the street. Before he even steps off the ladder to knock on my door, I have link light. Checked my speed, 900MB baby! For both a binary and a text based test.

Only disappointment- they won't let me run a web server, and they seemed confused when I mentioned the word "Linux". Minor stuff here.

OVERALL: very pleased so far. Speed has been great (I must be the only one in my neighborhood with cable!) Annoyed that I had to figure out on my own the email server settings. (If you install their browser, it's automatically configured.) Also seems like I can't get to a news server without their browser installed. Otherwise, I am very pleased.

    2/10/01 10:53pm update****
    - tweaked the system..heres my results

    Time (US east) Test Results..
    2001-02-10 14:49:06 Speed test 2280/242 kbps

I do not care about the upload really. for what I do online the download is my main concern.

Now, first I must say that I am a DSL sales rep for a Richmond, VA CLEC. So I know a little bit about DSL and Cable modem access. But what I cannot quite figure out is how to tweak it to make it faster.

Okay, onto my review. I ordered Comcast @ Home and was very pleased with the free installation and first month of service free as well. I got the date and time of install I wanted and it only took 14days because I was not moving until that time. The technician came out and was GREAT. He was ontime, which I cannot say the same for the ones I work with, and it only took him 20 minutes to get me up and running.

What I am not happy about is the speed. I have tested it several times and on average I am only getting 368down and about 80up. Now, I know that cable modems are shared bandwidth and yada yada yada, but not all day everyday. I have tried tweak testing but I am not sure what I am doing wrong cause nothing seems to work.

I called Comcast and was told, no speed guarntee. DUH!! I know this, I was only calling to see if they knew of anything I could do to go a little faster.

Well, my overall experience has been great. I have had comcast for three months now with no outages or downtime. I do however still want to work on this speed issue. If anyone out there can help..please let me know.
