My DSL provider, Telocity wasted 2 months of my time "working" on installing my DSL. I cancelled that service (see my review here at dslreports.com) and switched to Comcast @home.
I had the cable modem and Quick Start self install kit in 3 days from my call. The Quick Start kit included the modem, a cable splitter, some easy instructions, and the cabling. Was real simple. I am running Linux, so they gave me all the info I needed, (static IP, host name, etc). I just don't like the fact you are "forced" into installing their software.
Plugged it in, no link light. Called tech support, they were helpful. They explained a tech would have to come out to the house. Said they were backed up, and could get someone out within 4 days. (that's backed up?? I wish Telocity was that "backed up") I was expecting another month long delay.
Four days later, tech comes out and does something to the junction box on the street. Before he even steps off the ladder to knock on my door, I have link light. Checked my speed, 900MB baby! For both a binary and a text based test.
Only disappointment- they won't let me run a web server, and they seemed confused when I mentioned the word "Linux". Minor stuff here.
OVERALL: very pleased so far. Speed has been great (I must be the only one in my neighborhood with cable!) Annoyed that I had to figure out on my own the email server settings. (If you install their browser, it's automatically configured.) Also seems like I can't get to a news server without their browser installed. Otherwise, I am very pleased.

2/10/01 10:53pm update**** - tweaked the system..heres my results
Time (US east) Test Results.. 2001-02-10 14:49:06 Speed test 2280/242 kbps
I do not care about the upload really. for what I do online the download is my main concern.
Now, first I must say that I am a DSL sales rep for a Richmond, VA CLEC. So I know a little bit about DSL and Cable modem access. But what I cannot quite figure out is how to tweak it to make it faster.
Okay, onto my review. I ordered Comcast @ Home and was very pleased with the free installation and first month of service free as well. I got the date and time of install I wanted and it only took 14days because I was not moving until that time. The technician came out and was GREAT. He was ontime, which I cannot say the same for the ones I work with, and it only took him 20 minutes to get me up and running.
What I am not happy about is the speed. I have tested it several times and on average I am only getting 368down and about 80up. Now, I know that cable modems are shared bandwidth and yada yada yada, but not all day everyday. I have tried tweak testing but I am not sure what I am doing wrong cause nothing seems to work.
I called Comcast and was told, no speed guarntee. DUH!! I know this, I was only calling to see if they knew of anything I could do to go a little faster.
Well, my overall experience has been great. I have had comcast for three months now with no outages or downtime. I do however still want to work on this speed issue. If anyone out there can help..please let me know.

The tech agent was prompt in arriving to install, and installation was 7 days from ordering... could have been 2, but I was unavaliable. Although the tech had "never installed on a Windows 2000 machine" he had it running in 5 minutes with no problem. He also advised AGAINST the @home software becuase it actually SLOWS the connection. He also reccommended sites for speed tweaks.
Phone support was good as well, the first tech didn't know much, but offered to transfer me to a "Level 2 Tech" who was extremely knowledeable and helped me right away.
Mail services, however, are sub-par and frequently down.

Note, I am now placing my review under Comcast, instead of MediaOne, as my adrea has been sole by MediaOne (AT&T) to Comcast.
Well, I would have to say that MediaOne (now being transferred to Comcast in this area) has improved for me in the last few months. The speed is almost always 1500 down, and upstream is always near the 300 advertised. I think this may be due to me having a DOCSIS modem (unlike neighbors), which utilizes separate equiptment to access the internet, so I avoid the nightly bottlenecks. The biggest problems MediaOne (Comcast) has right now are routing problems, and continued mail server problems. This area has had alot of misconfigured routers lately, leaving many sites inaccessible. Hopefully, this trend will not continue. The mail server is also down quite frequently, with no explanation. Also, tech support STILL does not support the multiple program (which has been publically available for almost a year now!). I have changedmy ratings accordingly.

I sent an email to get service on a Monday. The same day I got a call back at work and made an appointment for install on Wedsnesday. Installers came and made sure the cable connection in my office had a good signal. I told them I could do the rest. I have not had any problems except that their tech support people did not know jack about my problems. I even had to tell the support person how to use their Remedy Ticket system. ( I use the same system at work).

I have Comcast@Home cable modem access in Philadelphia and it beats the pants off the 5 separate DSL connections I've had. All of my DSL connections (Voicenet, Phoenix, Telocity, Verizon-God forbid, MagaPath) were supposed to be 1.5 down and between 90k and 392k up. Surprisingly I got 1.5 all the time with lousy Verizon, however with the others I never managed more than 1.1M--distance issues not applicable. Setup time took from 3 weeks to 4 months to get connected. Anyhow, I called Comcast and got cable in 3 days, connected to the Internet, and I average download speeds of 2-3Mbps any time of the day. The 128k upload speed is a joke, but I've ordered a 768k x 408k DSL line as well for $49 / month, which, with my connection teaming software gives me a combined bandwidth of 3+Mbps down and 536kbps up for $90/month. How can you beat that? Let me refer you!

I got the @HOME service installed 2 weeks ago. For the first week, I could not connect at all. After 3 visits by the service techs, I could connect....occasionally. I have called 3 more times, had 2 more visits by the techs, and I still do not have a reliable connection. I spend most of my time connecting through my ISDN (which I was hoping to get rid of). So much for a broadband connection.

WOW. Comcast@Home has an incredible service. At my lowest (not counting the outage - that was Comcast's fault, not Excites), I was getting 900 Kbps. Now I've changed my RWIN settings (thanks to *this* site) and it blazes along at 1.2 Mbps minimum. I normally run at 2-5 Mbps though.
The installation gets major points off for his jerking around. He lost one of the screws to my computer case, and didn't secure the NIC with a screw. He also lost one of the female screws that hold my monitor in - it's only got the one on the other side now. Don't ask me how he did that. You just can't lose parts to a computer that doesn't belong to you.
E-Mail is a bit quirky, but I'm happy with mailandnews.com and yahoo. News is a no-show, I'm still waiting for that. I guess Usenet isn't a big concern in my area.UPDATE: News is working fine now. Apparently they validate by IP address, not login/pw
All in all, though, this service just blows my mind.

When i signed for @Home up in 97, the service was great. Fast speeds, quick downloads. I have watched the service progressively get worse within the last year and a half. From giving me the wrong address for the mail server to long "unexplained" outages, their customer service now consists of "... the following areas (..insert your state/city and state/city for every one you know..) may experience slow to no connection, our techs are aware of the problems and are working to solve them.." Then if you can wait the 30-60 minutes on hold you might get to talk to a human, who then "doesn't have the software to check the problem you are describing" and has to send you to a second tier tech. 13 times in the last 6 weeks the email servers have been down, unavailable or extremely slow.
I am currently looking for another ISP. Unfortunately, i am too far away from the CO for DSL.

I ordered my Cable Moden on December 12, it was installed on December 22nd as promised. Installation took only 40 minutes and was up and running before he left. Only complaint was he did not tweak my Windows98 settings for max speed. After using the tweaks found on this site, Wow ! blazing speeds. It does slow down during high use times of day sometimes, and mail server was inturrupted one day last week. but overall I think it is a great vallue for the money. It was available in my area for nearly a year before I got it, I can kick myself for waiting so long. I don't remember the speeds they were advertising but I ran a speed test from the California site a few minutes ago, results: 5206kbps download and 1011kbps upload. I am very satisfied.
