We had always used Frontier for our DSL and phone services, until the advent of 4mb Comcast Cable internet! After which, we canceled our Frontier account and that was the first day of freedom!!!! (freedom from contracts, and freedom from outages)

We now have HSI (16mb @ $29.99), CDV (Unltd. @ $14.99), and Cable (Premier @ $42)
Installation and service calls have been a breeze, with friendly technicians and prompt arrivals.
We currently have DCX & DCH HDDVR's, along with an Arris TM602G to handle our internet and phone.

"Great package price. Very fast internet. Great OnDeman Choices and Lots of HD. Phone works as advertised."
"Customer Service not as good as WOW."
"Comcast has great features for the price."

My Other Reviews·WOW Internet and C..
After being with WOW for about 8 years, I switched to Comcast. I am getting more services....faster internet, more HD, and a lot more On Demand.....for less money. The phone quality is as good or better than WOWs as well. WOWs customer service is top notch but I'm not willing to pay more ($400-$500 per year) for less when I rarely if ever use Tech. Support, anyway. My parents live a mile away from me and have had Comcast for about 6 years. They have never had an issue (at least that they can remember).

My Other Reviews·Verizon Online DSL
price goes up every time ya turn around. The faster they get the worse the congestion on the net. 3:30pm forget it a tin can and string would be faster. I switched to Verizon 7.1 its slower rated than comcrap however its rock solid no matter what time of day. As for the TV service its over priced over compressed and tiles frequently

By far the worst picture. The internet is unstable with speeds and pings. They were ok 7 or so years ago however they arnt anymore.

My Other Reviews·Windstream
I recently moved to a new rental 1.8 miles from my old location and AT&T DSL is not available there like it was at my old location.
So I had to go with comcast.
Had 3 options: Comcast, VerizonWireless PC Card, Wildblue Satellite

So, I ordered comcast. Had to pay 100.00 up front for installation.
and I am paying 55.00 for internet and 55.00 for digital voice which is a total ripoff!

I got the 8Mbps / 768Kbps Package but my average speeds are 22Mbps down / 2.5 Mbps up. That I cannot complain. I like speed.

I ordered the svcs, a tech came out the next day. all installed within 30 minutes. Great Installation.

They provided a ARRIS modem that uses DHCP technology. It has phone built in and the device has a battery backup if power fails.

I like the svc.
I hate the price.
___________________________________________________________________
Recently, I had svc issues. Had 60% packet loss causing the internet and phone to go down.
The upload dBm was 57. This is to be below 50.
It took 5 dispatch technicians to fix this problem over a weeks time.
Each technician knew they had to replace the old lines in the building that have been here since the 1980's but didn't want to do it.
Finally I told the last tech to just run the lines, I will connect all splitters, etc.

Bottom line, Comcast techs are lazy.
A CUSTOMER had to fix the issue.

____________________________________________________________________
Called to upgrade modem to DOCSIS 3.0
They wouldn't let me do it cause my speed package is 8.0Mbps.
Here is the result on my end:
[IMG]»results.speedtest.comcast.net/re···G]

Do you think I need the 3.0 modem?

I would have gone with DSL, but the speeds were just not good enough for a 5+ computer home.

I had this deal for 44.99 previously, but negotiated with a different cable tv package for 29.99 a month. I get up to 19MBitps and oddly highest upload as shown on dslr was ~10 MBitps

I used their Motorola cable modem (rented) for 4 years or so before it started dropping connections and refusing to receive/send for hours at a time.

Purchased a CM100 linksys and they set it up for me over the phone. Very simple and the connection is improved.

Update (11/4/09):
Speeds are still 8Mbps download and 2Mbps upload.
Still paying $65/month.
The connection remains very reliable, except when your modem and router die ;^).
Latency remains good.

Update (4/29/09):
Speeds are still 8Mbps download and 2Mbps upload.
Now paying $65/month (up $2 a month).
The connection remains very reliable. Although there have been a couple of outages that lasted less than a day in the last six months.
Latency remains good.
Billing issue: I changed credit cards (I have automatic billing set up), and by notifying Comcast of the change I got a late charge on my account. Talking with them (repeatedly) didn't satisfactorily resolve for me. So in addition to the new higher billing rate I have a late charge. Nice.

Update (2/19/09):
Speeds are still 8Mbps download and 2Mbps upload.
Now paying $65/month (up $2 a month).
The connection remains very reliable. Although there have been a couple of outages that lasted less than a day in the last six months.
Latency remains good.

Update (6//23/08):
Speeds are now:
8Mbps download and 2Mbps upload. (Up from 8M / 768K)
Still paying $63/month.
The connection remains very reliable.
Latency is good here too.

Update (12/6/07):
Nothing new to report, the connection remains very reliable, and the price has not changed.

Update (5/15/07):
Comcast has instituted a new speed bursting technology on all accounts. Although I'm sure it's probably working I don't see a personal impact to my internet usage.

Still no price changes, and the connection remains very reliable.

Update (11/14/06):
Nothing new to report, I've not had any problems whatsoever since the last update.

=)

Update:
Comcast has added an IGN subscription perk to the 8/768 package.

I haven't noticed any service interruptions as yet, it's been remarkably trouble free.

Update:
Comcast has updated their bandwidth limits.

Again.

I'm now getting 8Mbps down and 768Kbps up. Fortunately they seem to have the traffic shaping changed to the point where it's a non-issue. The Java based speed tests usually don't show the full bandwidth, but multiple concurrent downloads do show the full 8Mbps is available.

Update:
Comcast has updated their bandwidth limits. The good news is that I'm now getting 6Mbps down and 768Kbps up, the bad new is that they turned off traffic shaping so that 6Mbps is a maximum and I'm averaging about 5Mbps.

Update:
Comcast now allows the use of customer equipment with the Home Networking package, so I have switched to using my own modem and firewall (and save $5/month as a result). This time the billing was done correctly the first time.

So now I'm getting 4Mbps/384Kbps for $63/month, I still do not have cable TV service (which would save me $10/month on the connection).

The connection continues to be good. I have not had any significant slowdowns or downtime in the last year.

Original Review:

Background:

I had AT&T’s Ultralink service (3Mbps down and 384Kbps up for $80/month) and Comcast notified me that they are discontinuing that service so I would have to switch to something else. The service that Comcast automatically switch me to was the Pro service 4Mbps down and 384Kbps up for $95

I had heard that Comcast was offering a “Home Networking” service with speeds of 4Mbps down and 384Kbps up for $67, with the catch being you have to 1) Use their modem/wired/wireless/router and 2) you have to pay to have them install it.

The price breakdown is $52 for the service, $10 because I don’t have Comcast cable TV, and $5 modem rental.

I would have to buy the modem from Comcast for $200, if I wanted to own my own modem and avoid the $5/month rental charge.

Installation charges $200 1-2 computers +$50 per additional computer up to a total of 5 computers.

The modem/router device that Comcat provides has built in wireless and will provide (DHCP) IP addresses for up to 5 devices. You can put another router behind their device (double NATing) to attach more devices if you want, but Comcast does not support that.

The Phone Call

I called Comcast on Wednesday and they took my information and arranged for my installation on Friday. They would come out between noon and 4pm. They wanted to know how many computers they were going to set up, I told them one. They then wanted to know how many computers were going to connect to the internet, I told them three. I was told that the installation charge would be $250. Why? They would be setting up 3 computers. Would setting up two computers be less? Yes. Then just set up two please. Okay $200 installation charge then. (They won’t charge less just for one.)

The Installation

The installer shows up at exactly 4pm. (Well at least he got there during the specified time.)

He sets the modem/wired/wireless router. The wireless portion isn’t working. He doesn’t have a spare. He drives back to the warehouse to get a spare and sets this new one up. It works and it is now 5:30. Setting up my computers is not really needed since they are all going to connect via wires that are already in place, and the computers are already setup for DHCP so there isn’t really anything for him to do. Worth $200? Nope.

So with things up and running we test the speeds: 1000 to 2200 Kbps download. Uh, problem! I was getting faster speeds with the Ultralink service, and it was consistent.

The installer says that “Yep, that looks like a problem, but I can’t help you with that” (The signal levels are excellent, just like they were when I had Ultralink.)

“Go ahead and talk to tech support if things don’t speed up on their own.” Well I guess when it’s 6pm on Friday you are no longer part of “tech support”.

The Bill

I got my first bill for the home networking: $517

$450 installation and $67 service.

I call them up and complain. They agree that $250 was a mistake and they will refund it.

Well what they ended up doing instead is crediting my account $250, instead of crediting my credit card $250. Rather shady if you ask me.

The Speeds

I have found a way to get the 4Mbps download: Do my own traffic shaping. The technical details are not too important the important thing to know is I had to do something special on my end that Comcast would not help me with to get the full speeds that I’m paying for. (Some people have no problems getting the correct speeds, if you are one of those people hurray for you.)

Overall

Now that I’m getting the correct speeds, and I’m getting charged less each month than I was with Ultralink I’m fairly happy. Getting here was a pain.

Denver,Denver,CO
Contract price not specified.
"Down 90% of the time, billing blamed my router for a T3 network outage"
"horrible customer service, upwards of 45% packet loss, service drops every 3 hours"

Upon signing up with this group the first time I received a Motorola modem with custom firmware installed on it preventing me from checking the logs and signal area. It also limited to one MAC address behind it which the modem itself was designed to handle up to 255. I cancelled my account the first time but re-opened it when I was able to obtain a modem that did not have this restriction.

With the new modem I realized that the issue with service was not related to the MAC limiting but with the upstream T3 timing out. When the technician came out fully aware of the logs I was showing him stating it was the upstream router ( see link ) they tried to bill me for having a "bad router" in the apartment.

Upon escalating the issue I was told another technician would come out during the week which would force me to take another day off from work and lose 8 more hours of work. Customer service is non existent, I was told to cancel my service if I did not like the fact that I couldn't open a network trouble ticket. So I did and I will never go back to this horrible company.

It is far and between when they get users who know what they are talking about and I understand that. But when the issue is OBVIOUSLY an upstream switch that is going down, and the user has the logs to prove it... Treat that person with a little dignity and respect.

My advise is to stay away from this company.

@comcast.net

what are you talking about?

-ok dude what the hell are you talking about here?

"logs and signal area. It also limited to one MAC address behind it which the modem itself was designed to handle up to 255."

The modem has 1 ethernet port- it is not a device designed for networking. It is designed for modulating signals- RF and Digital signals.
A mac address is a unique address of a networking device- be it modem, router, or nic. So you are suggesting that you would have 255 networking devices behind 1 modem!!?? How about this? Put a NAT router behind the modem, and that router will only need to have 1 cmac id I assure you, because if it had more than 1 than it would not work right, and you can connect multiple computers to the internet on the same network.

also-
"With the new modem I realized that the issue with service was not related to the MAC limiting but with the upstream T3 timing out."

T3 error in the event log in the modem is common, no, expected on a daily basis to some degree. It is not in any way indicative of an issue on its own. T4 errors could be an issue....but that does not even necessarily mean anything either. You are looking for problems anywhere you can find them apparently because you will ALWAYS get those errors to some degree no matter how consistent or fast the connection.

-and this last comment...

"It is far and between when they get users who know what they are talking about and I understand that."

You dont know what you are talking about. You're not going to admit that, not even to yourself. Because in your world everyone besides yourself is apparently wrong about everything and you are the only one who knows what is going on, or so I gather from your comments. But I think the truth is that you don't know the difference between your modem and router.

I got an offer a little before the end of august, 44.99 for dvr and hbo for a year with contract for tv portion of service, which I refuse to do a contract. I have 6 months if I don't agree to contract. High speed internet 8Mb for a year no contract with that. Otherwise I like that they have a local number to be contacted at instead of them irritating 800 numbers. They don't seem to have on demand yet. Must be an older system. Doesn't offer Boomerang channel YET, I lived out here about 5 years ago and they didn't have it. And they still don't now that I moved back! Seem to be decent people at this comcast office. Otherwise no major complaints or problems.
