April 2012, updated May 2013:
After dealing unsatisfactorily with AT&T ADSL and 6mbps for a year, we chose a Comcast 1 year deal costing $40/month (over Knology and AT&T) that included 12mbps internet and analog TV service. After one year I negotiated a 25mbps connection with the analog TV and no contract for $60/month. That includes a one-time fee of $3.95 for service "insurance" which was to guarantee reasonable charges for a truck roll, etc. Recently I received an email stating that my bandwidth has been raised to 50/10mbps download/upload. Using
Speedtest.net established a 30mpbs/10mbps connection which can slow to 23/7 during the busiest
hours. It's quite adequate to support simultaneous connects to two or three NetFlix streams, two MMORPG games, and Thunderbird email and web surfing in addition to WiFi support for three handhelds.
Overall, Comcast provides acceptable service only if one wants to be self-sufficient. We get adequate bandwidth with a DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem but not the 50mbps bandwidth claimed in a Comcast information email recently sent.
I always try to buy my own modem and router. My modem is currently a Motorola SB5120 DOCSIS 2.0. and my router is an ASUS RT-N56U, running the latest version 3 firmware. When I first installed the modem, I flashed the firmware with the latest Motorola factory version and got 50mbps download with a speed test but soon afterward a Comcast firmware flash throttled my rate to about 12-15mbps. That said, I'm curious why I can only get about 30mbps download when Comcast claims to have upped my limit to 50mbps. My Comcast internet service is labelled Blast Plus on my account.
Cable installer was tight-lipped, not very friendly. Service for set-top boxes was not consistent. One set-top box failed and had to be replaced which is unusual since all our equipment is protected by UPS.
Dealing with customer service starts with a digitized voice recognition robot menu for routine queries but which is occasionally inadequate. Inadequacies are routed to polite, well disciplined but technically lacking persons constrained to a strict company policy.
When examining router logs, found that many unsolicited foreign IPs were being rejected. Rejected IPs would normally be addressed by a firewall. For those customers who are not computer savvy, these firewalls may be missing which poses a significant danger of malware (computer virus) infection. When our bandwidth was throttled down by my router mis-configuration, we experienced what appeared to be a "denial of service attack" accompanied by a series of unsolicited connection requests from foreign IPs.
Unfortunately among the dropped (unsolicited) connection attempts, is a periodic repeat repeat from Comcast's Mount Laurel, New Jersey "Network Abuse and Policy Observance". The Comcast checks are a significant percentage of the unwanted WAN (www) drops. If this is standard operating procedure, I'm sure it impacts Comcast's internet bandwidth.
I recently upgraded my router firmware and changed the traffic QOS. Since then we get WAN drops far less frequently so the drops may have been the firmware or may have been my configuration. I'm just paranoid about break-ins from hackers.
I intend to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem soon to help protect against Denial-of-Service attacks and malware intrusions due to perceived weaknesses in the DOCSIS 2.0 specification. I got a good deal on a Cisco DPC3010 but the usual Comcast policy is that they will only provision certain modems even though the DPC3010 is nearly identical to two Cisco modems that they already provision. Go figure.
Recently Comcast has decided to start encrypting the digital TV channels that are "free" and proposes to charge for the digital converters after two years. Supposedly this was all OK'd by the FCC. Not sure where this is going but I did get a letter in the USPS mail from a corporate officer which implied that I was getting "extra digital channels" which were going away June 5th along with a list of channels in different digital tiers. I called the number in the letter and the customer rep could not shed any light on the matter and seemed totally ignorant of the FCC role in regulating TV service.
Now Senator John McCain (R-AZ) is introducing a bill that would force ISPs to unbundle their offerings. This move seems to be to counter a threat by the ISPs to digitize and encrypt all channels, even the local ones and bundle them into more expensive services. ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CSPAN and the like are supposed to be free and are if you have an antenna. The Aereo www service is reputed to have caused this move by the ISPs. Looks as though we need to support this bill.
Comments:
 | | Re Comcast I think you might get 50 with a docsis 3 modem. I have 50/10 and get rates above that often like 75-95. | |

I do not know what people have against comcast. There service is 99.9% reliable. Its gone out 2 times in the last 14 months. Once after a fire and again after a thunderstorm. Its kind of expensive but if combined with a low cost voip provider it can be a little less than you POTS and DSL combined. As demonstrated Below.
I have the blast package (16 Megs Down and 2 Megs Up) which is $72.86 after taxes and Voipo which is roughly $13.75 a month . Combine the two and it comes to $86.61. With Verizon there fastest connection is 1Meg, not fast enough to provide a steady voip connection. So you have to use there POTS which cost big $$$. Anyway 1MB DSL is $19.99 and the POTS with unlimited minutes and three features is $54.99. Plus a unlisted number which verizon charges $1.25 a month for. I'm not sure about the taxes but i remember when my family had verison there was at least $10 in taxes and fees. For example there was a 911 Fee, Line Recovery Fee, State taxes, etc. So the unoffical amount is about $86.23 give or take.
So lets see a very reliable 16meg connection and Unlimited Phone Service with over 20 great features for $86.61 a month or POTS, a unlisted number, and a 1Meg dsl line for Roughly 86.23. That is a 40 cent difference, A lot less than most people think.
Here is a good experience that stuck with me. The other night there were new maps available for gears 2. About 80MB, my friend and i started downloading at the same time. By the time he was at 20% i had already download the maps. And by the time he finished downloading them (about 15 mins later) i had already played all three.
The only bad thing is having to reset my modem every few days to stay at peak performance.
Overall Comcast Broadband is a much better deal than it leads onto be. The only bad thing is the 250 Gig Cap. But its still a little smaller data allowance than verision dsl. Do the math and you will see a 1meg connection running 24/7 at 100Kbps (Top speed based on my buddys connection) for 31 days only 259 gigs, compared to 250 gigs via comcast.
Anyone moving to Santa Maria needs to get comcast and a voip provider. It makes for a much better internet experience. Maybe if verizon looses more and more people they might think about bringing FIOS here in 09. The day that happens verizon will be welcome in my home again. No questions asked.
Update 2/1/2009
After 4 months of lies i finally got my blast speeds. I get about 2 megabytes a second when i download and that's faster than anything i thought was possible worth my current hardware. Ive come a long way from 180kbps DSL. And like i said before with blast and voip its the same price as POTS and DSL, ultimately making this the better deal for value.
Update 4/14/2009
My Blast Price Went Up $2.00 while around the country Blast Prices Are Being Lowered 10-15 Dollars. So since i am now receiving blast and Ultra prices i must lower the value for money from a 5 to A 2
Update 11/26/2009
Had to downgrade as part of my financial budget cuts but really don't notice a solid differnce in speed, with powerboost kicking in every so often no real noticeable speed decreases to be had. My view of comcast has really improved in the last 6 months, im very grateful they are around. I hope to upgrade to 50 tier some day
Update 3/9/2010
Finally updated to Docsis 3.0. Had a little trouble at first. Called to get me Modem Provisioned and was told they couldn't contact my "block" and that it would be activated very soon and she would call me back. A hour goes by and nothing so i call back to see what happened. Then was told they did not know what i was talking about. So after a few minutes of talking he told me he had activated my modem, so then i proceeded to upgrade my service the the 50 meg package which cost $115 month. Did a few real world downloads with megaupload and got a sustained download speed of roughly 6,500 kilobytes a sec... Blisteringly fast (considering only 5 years ago i was downloading stuff at 5 kilobytes)
Update 3/10/2010
Called comcast today and downgraded to there 22/5 package. Decided that 50 megs was to much for me at this point and time. So now i pay 78 dollars a month for 22/5, or soon to be 30/7!!! Downloads are currently max out at 3,000 kilobytes a second which is perfect for me.
Update 1/29/2013
Just upgraded to a package named Blast Plus. It includes Blast tier internet service, digital economy cable and HBO for only 69.99 a month. The internet side of things is smooth as ever. But as a video provider Comcast is terrible. I never understood the hate people have for Comcast but now i know. After my order Comcast charged me an $38.00 etf fee even though i just upgraded my service. They also did not send me a required cable box which i had to take time to arrange them to send me one. After my box came i found out i was not on the right cable tier. I had to talk to ten, yes ten "tech" reps before i got savey enough to walk the rep through it. (They were sending the "activation" signal to a ghost box on my account.
After that i contacted billing and arranged to have my etf fee waived, partial monthly service fee waived and get a $20 credit for having to spend over 3 hours getting my cable to work.
Because of Comcast blunders i lowed their pre sales information, Install co-ordination, and Tech support from 4 to 1.
After all this is still think Comcast is an incredible value. Find me another isp provider that offers 30 megs (really 24 megs without the powerboost bs) internet, a tv package with actual channels and HBO for $70 a month.

Edit: 5-13-2013
It's been awhile since this review was initially written. I'm still with Comcast. I switched to business class in mid 2010 and went back to residential in mid 2013.
Rockin now using Blast! 50/10. Still always-on, reliable, and fast!!
-------------------- I've used Comcast High-speed internet for about four and a half months. Before broadband I was on a slow dialup for about five years, so this was a very welcome change.
As for Comcast's service, it's awesome! I get close to advertised speeds (~2995/244) and am quite satisfied with their connection reliability. Reliability was not something I had on dial-up. Even during a big ice & snow storm in early January, my connection remained fast and alive. (The only time my connection goes down is when I use a P2P application such as Overnet that overloads my D-Link 614+ router).
The order process was quite impressive as it only took Comcast three days from the time I called them to hook up the service at my house. I called them on a Thursday and Sunday they arrived. The Install process took a couple of hours because I did not have a cable outlet where I wanted the service installed, so they installed one for me.
I ordered the "professional installation" package because it was part of an offer that i was taking advantage of, and it was free. The Comcast tech gave me a Terayon cable modem and configured my Windows XP system to work with the service.
The good thing was that he stuck around to make sure the service worked before he left.
I got a dynamic IP, but it feels "virtually" static to me! It has only changed once since I ordered the service and that was soon after I ordered it.
Overall I am very pleased with Comcast's HSI service and recommend that anyone who can should order it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------
(updated on 1-18-2005)
I've had Comcast HSI for a bit over 1 year now (signed up on Dec 27, 2003), and I could never go back to dial-up.
I still have a rock-solid connection with Comcast and it has not gone out once since I signed up for the service over a year ago. If it did go out for any period of time, I sure didn't notice
My "Bad point" in my initial review of Comcast service was the fact that the upload was "only 256k", but Comcast even nullified that. In about 8 days from now, my Comcast connection will go from 3000/256 to 4000/384. That's a good increase in upload speed.
I also have an option to pay a bit more a month and sign up for the awesome 6000/768 package once it becomes available. That should definitely satisfy my "need for speed" both in terms of downstream and upstream.
Overall, I'm still very satisfied with Comcast and happily pay $56 a month for it! I would still recommend this service to anyone who can get it.
Still with Comcast and still pay ~$56 a month for it. Rock solid connection.

Latest Review at the bottom.
6/15/2004 Original Review:
After having various dial up services since 1992 (remember Prodigy at 2400 bps?) I decided to try Comcast HSI. Dial up was OK, but I had seen what broadband was like at work. In February 2004 I saw the Best Buy offer for Comcast HSI at $19.99 for 3 months ($42.95 after), Motorola SB5100 (free with rebate), Comcast self install kit (free with rebate), and a $75 Best Buy Gift card. The gift card was good for a router and a few bucks more. This looked like a good deal so I took the plunge.
Self install was a snap (sort of). I already had Comcast Cable TV service so there was no need for a technician to come out. I spent about an hour cabling up and running the self install software. I ran the connection software and it wouldn't connect. I tried and tried. I finally called Comcast to register the modem MAC address. Best Buy supposedly registered the modem with Comcast when I bought it, but Comcast had no record of it. After a few calls to get the right MAC address installed and their database updated (twice!) everything worked fine. The Indian lady was very hard to understand tho. It was about 6 hours from opening the box to being on line.
The service is 3Mb down, 256Kb up. The DSLreports benchmark shows 3.1 Mb down, 240Kb up. This has been consistent for the 4 months I've had Comcast HSI. It is sometimes a bit pokey (down to 2Mb ), but I've also seen 4.7Mb at times. I've only been down 3 times in 4 months and one of those times was during a storm where I lost power for 6 hours. The other 2 times were 10 to 45 minutes long. My area is a new installation for Comcast HSI so my mileage may be different than yours.
Tech support is terrible if you don't have a configuration question. I tried the on line chat help to ask about a port 123 (network time) network routing problem. It had been working then it stopped after a month. The chat guy was nasty and clueless. I called the 800 number and the first person I talked to was pleasant, but clueless. Neither knew what I was talking about and assumed I was stupid. I got to the next support level and finally talked to a knowledgeable person. It shouldn't take 3 hours to find someone who understands your question.
Overall I'm quite satisfied. As long as my service remains reliable and I don't have to call tech support I'll be very happy. I have other broadband choices (Millennium Cable and Verizon DSL), but Comcast seems to be the best available. I'm still thinking about the price difference from ATT Worldnet dial up ($16.95/mo) and Comcast, but I think I'm hooked on broadband.
4/15/2005 Update:
After 1 year with Comcast I'm truly hooked on broadband. My service suffered during the October 2004 through January 2005 speed upgrade. There were speed and modem sync problems during that time. Since they announced the upgrade complete in January 2005 I have had nothing but good, reliable service. I now have 4000/384 service with the upgrade. Speed tests consistently show 3700/350 or better.
They have had several bad DNS outages in April 2005, but I put an alternate DNS address in the router and never noticed the problem.
I haven't had to call tech support in a while (thank goodness), but I assume it's as abysmal as ever. I would go with someone else with comparable service and good tech support, but they don't exist.
11/15/2005 Update:
I'm still very satisfied with my Comcast HSI service. The Summer speed upgrades went well. I have been consistently getting 6Mbit/s down and 350Kbits up since August.
I had to call customer service (sigh) in July when a thunderstorm knocked the cable out. I called and found out it was a big outage. Two days later I called again (service rep was surprised I was still out) and got a truck roll 2 days later. The technician was very accommodating and spent about an hour troubleshooting. He determined the problem was in the distribution system. He put in a work order, but he couldn't confirm a completion date. Sigh. Not his fault, that's just the way it works. Late the next day my Internet connection came up.
I was without Internet service for 5 days. I can't blame them for the thunderstorm, but anything past a day or two (especially when it's in their distribution system) seems grossly inefficient to me. This outage also affected my neighbors so I would have expected a bit more alacrity in their response.
Besides this act of God, the service has been reasonably solid with only 3 outages in the last 6 months that lasted about an hour each. I don't think this is too bad.
Although I can't complain about the Internet connection, the price is still a bit high. I'll consider going to Verizon FIOS if the price is right.
4/15/2007 Update:
I still can't complain. My ratings remain the same. Service since my last update has been pretty solid. Download speed is very close to the advertised 6 Mb/s and I'm seeing 640Kb/s upload with the upgrade a few months ago. Power Boost works fine. There were a couple of short down times, but I guess they have to do maintenance sometime They didn't bother me in any event.
I haven't needed to call them for anything recently, but my previous opinions about tech support remain. I'm still biased and they haven't done anything to change that. (Not necessarily their fault, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth.)
Verizon finally put a connection box in front of my house, so I'm definitely FIOS ready at the curb. Verizon prices are commensurate with Comcast prices so I'm not ready to explore new ground by changing (yet). It's good to know I have a viable alternative to Comcast if they get unreliable or more expensive than Verizon. Comcast is making waves about ditching analog cable. If they try to charge me for the digital TV box(es) that may be my clue to go FIOS. I'm hanging tough for now.
5/25/2008 Update:
My opinion remains unchanged. The network has been reliable except for when Mother Nature causes problems. These outages were taken care of quickly. I made 1 service call during the last rating period. I asked for a line tech and got an installer. When he got here he told me I should have asked for a line tech...sigh. I fixed the problem myself (corroded connector). The installer magnanimously said he wouldn't charge me.
I'm still quite satisfied although tech support still needs a lot of work (but you already knew that!)
3/27/2009 Update:
I'm still quite pleased with the Comcast service and reliability. My service was upgraded to 12Mbit/1Mbit in December with no price increase (still $42.95). This upgrade is working very well. I am still using my original SB5100 modem (I'm glad I didn't rent it!).
The 250GB cap doesn't affect me yet so there's no reason to complain. I am concerned that if I use more streaming video that this could be a problem in the future. I was lucky to not need to call tech support in the past year so I avoided that frustration.
I received a Christmas gift of an HD TV. This has got me thinking again. Comcast HD choices are severely limited in my area despite advertising to the contrary. So far it's OK, but my choice of TV providers could affect my choice of ISP.
10/28/2009 Update:
Comcast has been very reliable since the last update. Because I haven't needed to call customer support I'm still quite happy.
12/13/2010 Update:
The service has been very reliable since the last update with contracted download speeds (12 Mbit/sec) being available most of the time. In fact I've seen 25 Mbit/sec on some large downloads lasting 10 or 15 minutes. This is beyond Power Boost.
Another year has gone by where I didn't call their (still presumably) abysmal customer service. I've had no problems that required a call. They've trained me not to call...sigh. This has been to their detriment. I've been contemplating upgrading my TV service for the past year or so. I've been afraid to change something (billing and service) that is working. A decent web page that shows ALL the options would be nice though.
5/20/2011 Update:
I'm still quite satisfied with my Comcast Internet. I've had no need to call them for service recently although I've noted in just the past few days that my modem power levels are becoming marginal...sigh. I hope I don't have to try to explain this to whatever droid I get on the phone.
Alas and Hallelujah! Their website FINALLY had an entry for ordering an HDTV box without the $40 installation fee, the $30/hr charge, and the miscellaneous cat sitting fee (or whatever). They've trained me not to call so I didn't. I get the local stations' HDTV signals from the raw cable (that's what I usually watch) so I haven't missed much. Comcast missed the 2.5 years of the $10 HD fee because of their abysmal customer service and a web page that is only relevant to new subscribers.
I took the plunge and I'm anxiously awaiting my HD self install kit. I'm less anxiously awaiting my next bill which I assume will not be correct or at least not what I expected...sigh.
I've looked at FIOS (the fiber is in front of my house), but I still haven't seen a reason to switch. The prices are about the same and Comcast has been reliable. It's good to know that I have another choice should Comcast decide I don't matter any more. I've had Comcast (and its predecessor) for 19 years so inertia also figures in to any decision to change.
As a side note I'm still using my original SB5100 modem I got free (after rebate from Best Buy) in 2004. I've certainly got my money's worth out of this puppy While my current 12 Mbit/2 Mbit service doesn't require anything better I suspect I'll need to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3 modem sometime soon. Maybe I'll put a new modem on my Christmas list?
7/19/2011 Update:
I am still satisfied overall with Comcast (TV and Internet) although my experience with my new HD set top box (STB) shows customer service is still lacking. I received my new HD STB by mail on May 23. Plug it in and it works after a few hoops to jump through. Nope, DOA. It didn't work because it wasn't in their database. It took a week to figure this out. Eight calls over two weeks couldn't resolve the problem. The installer arrived on June 4, but was clueless about my problem. Luckily she had an HD STB. This one worked. I waited for my bill.
The June bill wasn't too far off given that I finally got a $25 credit for my trouble. They charged me for HD between May 20 and June 4 with 1 day credit for May 27. I'm guessing my 1 day credit was someones attempt to fix the billing problem, but didn't do it right. I had told them not to charge me for service not provided. OK, I would be arguing about $5 or so. Being afraid of the can of worms I might be opening I just paid the bill. I then anxiously awaited the July bill.
The July bill charged me for 2 STBs. I've never had more than one working at a time. I called, gave a one sentence description of my problem, and the lady agreed with me. She immediately credited my bill for the overcharge. I just about fell out of my chair! I now await the August bill...sigh.
I won't upgrade my opinion of Comcast's customer service based only on this one ray of light. Getting HD service to work was a nightmare of phone calls with no one really knowing what to do.
5/13/2013 Update:
Service is still good and reliable. The price went up $5 (Internet) since the last review. TV went up even more...sigh. I had my coax severed by Verizon Fios contractors in Nov 2011. I asked them if they cut my cable. "Oh no senor, we no cut cable." Crap! I called Comcast.
A total outage didn't impress them so I got someone 2 days later. They gave me the impression this was expedited from the run-of-mill outage. The technician saw the coax was buried about 6 inches below ground and was 20 years old. He told me that he'd schedule my cable for replacement in the spring (2012). HA! It never happened as I thought! Everything still works and I've had a speed increase or two. I'm up to 20mbit/s on the performance tier.
Overall I'm still satisfied with the company and the service it provides. Customer support probably still sucks, but I've been lucky not to need any recently.

 | | Horrible Don't use comcast! I have had Comcast for about 2 years, I am an IT professional for a chain of hospitals, so my internet connection is critical for my work. Not long ago My connection dropped, and when I called "customer service" I was put in contact with a rep who was less than helpful. I insisted that nothing had changed inside the house, but she insisted that I must take 4 hours out of my life to wait for a service tech that wouldn't be available for two days! Two days was a long time for me not to have internet access. I investigated the option of moving to business class service, but in my anger I told them I would just wait for there service tech. Once off the phone,I started looking for alternatives. I subscribed to a 4G (wimax) service to use as a backup while sitting in a dunken donuts using their wifi. when I got home, I found my internet service up and running. Shortly after,I got a call from Comcast alerting me to the fact that there was some unscheduled work being done in my area and that was the source of my problem. Several days later my wireless 4G modemarrived in the mail and it sat in the box for about a week as I planned how I was going to configure my firewall for the redundant routes. Suddenly my internet goes out again, I call for support and again it will take two days, I elect to go with the business class service and get transferred to the appropriate team, only problem is the price that they were quoting me was not the price I wanted to get. By this time my 4G modem was up and running. Running very well, so I just canceled my service. Several days later I get a call from a Comcast representative, looking to try to keep me as a customer. At first she was really nice, but as soon as I said, "I am unsalvageable as a customer." She became short and read her closing statement from a script and before I could finish saying, "Thanks anyway." she hung up on me.
I would not recommend Comcast to anyone. This company does not seem to care about anyone other than people who are not prospective customers. | |

After seven years the service is still a good connection. Comcast also provides lots of free software and emails but I am staying with the Fios for webserver service for the time being.
Lastly I played with their personal web site but found it very slow serving the pages. It also only provides 25 Meg of space. It feels like a DSL server.
It is a good deal if you already have cableTV and don't need to run mail servers or web servers which are forbidden in the Comcast user service agreement and want a semi fixed IP..
Monthly caps have currently been suspended.
Speed has increased to a fairly reliable 20000/4000 kbps. IP has changed only three times over the term as long as you provide the same MAC address.

Until recently my experience with Comcast has been exceptionally great. Even now the products (cable, internet and phone) have performed above expectations. In ten years we have had less than five outages and only one of those lasted for more than an hour. We have three people using the internet at peak times for gaming, streaming and browsing and there hasn't been any noticeable lag. Unfortunately, the cost has crept up over the years. I used to have basic cable stations. The move to digital changed the lineups and somehow I've ended up with more stations that I need or want to pay for. I'll be calling this month to see if I can get it back down.

 | | Com castaway patron beware! The worst service ever, two months into service two outages, when called no one answers phone for 30 to 40 minutes, once you get an operator, they will put you on hold forever, I that is if you are lucky if your connection with them is not dropped or there you go once again, good luck with that. If a tech needs to come out, which is what happened in my case, the earliest appointment was two days out, so I was without phone and Internet services and guess what, it had to happen when my son was in the middle of his high school exams. When I told them, either they fix this service or discontinue my contract, I was told there will be early contract termination charges, would you call this highway holdup or what? No managers or supervisors are available at any given time you call, it's some awry answering service that will place you on hold forever before your call will be finally dropped, good luck with whoever uses this service, are we still in the third underdeveloped world or what? Is there no end to this atrocity. | |
