Became a Charter HSI only customer in June or July of 2011 and started on the 15Mbps/3Mbps plan @ $29.99/month for 12 months. I bought my own modem which was a Motorola SB6120 (now using a SB6121) to avoid Charters then $5 modem rental fee. After the year promo had ended I think the price went to $45.99/month. Sometime in late 2012 early 2013 I was offered a chance to upgrade to Charter's 30Mbps/4Mbps plan @ $54.99/month which I am currently still on and speeds are always consistent with what was advertised. I suspect that the consistency is due to living in a small town connected to a node which has little to no congestion.

Install was quick, tech (local contractor) showed up on time and didn't have to do a whole lot inside besides reroute some of the existing wiring that was installed prior to us living in this house.

We've had I'd say about 8 outages since I've had the service and most of them were weather/power outage related. The first time I ever had to have a tech come out was towards the middle of Feb. 2014 due to squirrels damaging my drop line causing moisture to build up in it.

August 6th, 2014 - Service is still excellent. Still waiting for Charter Spectrum to be available. I have a feeling it will happen soon.

August 7th, 2014 - Spectrum Internet has gone live! Getting around 60 Mbps/4 Mbps and PowerBoost/Traffic Shaping is no longer active.

September 4th, 2014 - Added Spectrum Voice (Home Phone) for $29.99 and the lady put me on a new promo. I'm getting both Charter Spectrum Internet 60/4 and Spectrum Voice for $59.98/12 months. My POTS bill with Clear Rate Communications (CLEC in Frontier Territory) was around $60/month. I can get two services for the price of one now. Even after the promotion ends in 12 months it goes to $69.98/month which is still a good deal in my opinion.

Install is set for September 12th between 8AM-10AM. I guess that's the earliest they could get a technician to install the service, they must have a heavy workload right now. Seems like a long time, but I can wait.

September 12th, 2014 - Contractor arrived to install Spectrum voice. He arrived right around 8 AM and was finished in about an hour. He installed the phone on a separate coaxial line and mounted an Arris TM822A D3 Telephony Modem onto one of the beams in my basement. The coax for the Internet and telephone run into a Atronix 2-Way Vertical Splitter and then out to the house box and so on. I opted to not get the battery backup right now as I have a cell phone. I know that E-911 location services don't work as well with cell phones, but I don't really care much about that right now. I can always add it in the future or buy my own UPS and do it myself.

Call clarity is just as good, if not slightly better than I had with my old POTS line. So no complaints there.

All in all it was a positive experience and I'm saving quite a bit of money now by bundling my Internet and phone together.

Update: 03/30/15 - Internet and phone service are still performing great. Only a few brief outages, which was most likely due to maintenance rather than technical difficulties. Recently there has been a routing issue in my area with calling multiple popular 1-800 numbers. It is being looked into and should hopefully be resolved shortly. Will update again when I find out that the routing issue is fixed.

Update: 04/02/15 - Joseph from Charter called me back last night to report that the routing issue should be fixed. If it wasn't then they wanted me to call them back. No need to as the numbers I was having trouble with are all working now. Very pleased with this customer service experience.

Update: 05/06/15 - Going to try and get a 16x4 Cisco or Arris modem from local office soon. If not then I'll get an 8x4 modem.

Update: 05/12/15 - Had a relatively short phone and Internet outage today. One of the fittings connecting to the tap (I believe) had gotten water in it after the heavy rain we had yesterday. I think he said something about it being installed vertically when it should have been horizontal, or maybe it was the other way around. I wasn't home when the technician did the repair work, so I'm not exactly sure what was done. My mother was and she doesn't remember what he actually said. She said he was only here for about half hour or less. Either way everything is working again. I noticed the downstream power on my cable modem is reading a bit higher than it was before, but the upstream power is about 4-5 dBmV lower than it was. My upstream power was around 48-49 dBmV before, now its 43-44 dBmV.

Update: 09/13/2015 - I signed up for the FCC SamKnows program and received my Whitebox on August 26th. So far its reporting very consistent speeds on both the download and upload side. I've only seen a few times where speeds have dropped below advertised. The download is staying in the 58-65Mbps range and the upload has never dropped below 4Mbps. I've been very pleased with the results I'm seeing and I hope that continues to be the case.

Update: 02/11/16 - With more and more municipal, private, and utility run networks being constructed around the nation, the value I see in my current service is dwindling. With the impending merger of Charter, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks; this has caused me to become much more concerned about the future of our Internet access provided by those companies. I suspect that there will a round of additional rate hikes on Internet service and even more so on the cable TV side, as the costs for traditional programming grow higher and higher.

Update: 08/09/17 - After an outage at Midnight, upstream channel bonding has been enabled and I now have two upstream channels.

Update: 01/04/18 - Replaced Spectrum's Arris TM822A with my own Netgear CM600. Showing 16 Downstream Bonded Channels and 4 Upstream Bonded Channels.

Update: 03/02/18 - Upgraded to a SPP package (Internet Plus/Spectrum Voice) over Live Chat and now have 100/10 Internet. May consider upgrading to Ultra 300/20 sometime this year.

Charter - Apple TV vs Verizon

I am on day 3 of charter service. The reason that I moved off of Verizon to Charter was when I tried hooking up my apple TV to verizon DSL I was seeing 6 hour download times. After doing a little research I found that for $5 more a month I can try Charter. It came with a 12 month commitment, which is sub optimal but I figured give it a shot because as of now Apple TV is useless.

So the review - internet is faster, can download / stream content from anywhere instantly. I am amazed at how fast the download speed is. I hope the service stays as consistent over the course of 12 months. For now, moving from Verizon appears to be a good move.

Re: Charter - Apple TV vs Verizon

12 month commitment? Charter did away with contracts and commitments years ago.. Maybe they still offer them to people who want to lock in a lower rate, most likely bundled. They do have a 30 or 60 day money back guarentee though.

Charter is the only cable provider in my town and Frontier offers DSL with a maximum speed of 6mbps download and around 1Mbps upload. A few of my neighbors had Frontier and could only pull about 3Mbps download even during off peak hours. So for me Charter was a no brainer as Frontier would never meet my needs. Welcome to Charter and I hope your experience is just as good as mine has been for the past 2+ years

Lower Upstream Power Is Better

Lower upstream power is better. Maximum upstream power level is generally 53. Higher than that and the modems I've had generally have connection problems. They work for a while, lose connection, reset, connect for a while and repeat.

Think of it like a cell phone that has a strong signal from a cell. This generally uses less battery because the phone can use lower power to transmit back to the cell. Conversely, a phone with a poor signal can experience reduced battery life because it has to use significantly more power to reach the cell.

Re: Lower Upstream Power Is Better

I started having issues early last year when my upstream power was at 51-52 dBmV. Saw considerable packet loss and modem was rebooting often. Turns out my drop had been damaged by squirrels and was both egressing and ingressing.

Your cell phone analogy is a good example.

Update January 2018 (after 6 years of service):

It's interesting to look back to my initial review from 6 years ago, where I was happy to get 15 Mbps download/4 upload. Today I get about 110 Mbps download - yet still suck at a disappointing 5 Mbps on the upload. Most other Spectrum areas are getting 200-1000 download and 10-40 upload.

In the past 6 years service has been rock-solid, I could probably count the number of brief outages on one hand.

----------------------------------

Original review:

After having AT&T DSL service for over 10 years, I now need speeds greater than 5 Mbps for streaming Netflix and other HD content to my Roku box, I looked to AT&T U-verse and Charter. U-verse wanted a $149 installation fee, plus equipment fee for a service that is slower and more expensive than Charter. So I decided on Charter's 12 Mbps (now 15 Mbps) Internet Express service for a promo price of $20/month, increasing to $35/month after 4 months. The service is about 3x faster than DSL for less cost.

It was about a week from the order date before they could install. However shortly after arriving the tech determined there was a problem with the cable from the box across the street to my house, so he had to schedule a different line person to run a new line to the house before installation could proceed. I asked to re-schedule for exactly 1 week later.

About 3 days before they were supposed to come out for the 2nd time to install, I called to notify them that the line to my house still hadn't replaced. I was then re-scheduled for a week later. A few days after calling I noticed that they replaced the line to my house. The night before my installation, and again that morning I received a call from the automated system notifying me that the tech will be there between 8-10am. By 10am the installer still hadn't shown up, so I called. I was informed that I was rescheduled for the next week because the line to my house wasn't installed - when in fact it was. Apparently there was a mix-up between the local installers and the national scheduling dept.

About 3 weeks after ordering I finally had service installed. Speeds were around 15 Mbps, and there was little packet loss (I run PingPlotter on my PC 24/7). After about 3 weeks of service, and shortly after watching a few HD movies, I noticed my speeds dropped and became inconsistent, and my packet loss was high. I contacted Charter via Twitter, and CS was very helpful and suggested that a tech come out. A few days later the tech came out, but by that time the problems I was having seemed to have been fixed on their own. The tech still checked the line and levels and everything was within spec. However, he replaced the Ubee DOCSIS 2 modem with a Cisco DOCSIS 3 modem. Since the tech visit over a month ago, I've had no speed or packet loss issues.

I was happy a few weeks ago to get a free increase by 3 Mbps on the download (I'm getting about 18.7 Mbps according to the Charter speed test), and an increase of 2 Mbps on the upload.

My concerns are that I am probably exceeding the 100 GB cap, but have no way of measuring what I use. I know my price will increase after the first year, but I don't know exactly how much it will increase - I don't want to be gouged with a price that is more than double the amount I'm paying now. However if I need to move to the 30 Mbps plan for $10 more per month to get the 250 GB cap, I'm OK with that - mostly because I feel $30 for 30 Mbps is a good deal - not that I think unmeasurable caps are good business.

A few weeks after I got service they were offering a better deal to new customers ordering through the website than I had signed-up for. I contacted several different departments, and finally got the retentions dept. to honor the newer, better deal.

SW Ohio has just completed TWC to Charter/Spectrum conversion.

Buffer bloat is much better than it had been under TWC, grade "C". Speed offered is 100 up, 10 down, for $64.99. I had to call to make the change from TimeWarner "Standard Internet" to "Spectrum Internet", and so far, I'm glad I did. What had been $60 for 15/1 became $65 for 100/10. My modem (SB6141) is warning "RCS Partial Service" and giving me 5 channels down, vs. the previous 8. Some speedtests have been in the 22 range, but most in the 116 range, with 12 up -- I'll see if this continues before calling.

Update -- two days after initial conversion, I powered down modem for a time, and when it came back up, I had my 8 bonding channels down and 4 up back again. DSLReports gives line quality A+. Happy!

December 2017 update -- baseline speed of Greater Cincinnati Spectrum has gone to 200mbps. I'm testing as high as 225 (and some tests of 175 or lower). It's a little inconsistent, but maybe that's a startup issue -- just noticed the upgrade in the last day or so.

I ordered the Double Play (Cable with Showtime included and 100Mbps internet with a wireless router) with JapanTV premium channel added . My home was never wired for cable TV when I ordered service. The installer was very courteous and professional; he put everything exactly where I wanted the wiring and equipment to go.

Cable box is a Motorola DCX3200
Modem is an Arris TM1602
Wireless Router is a Sagemcom Fast 5260

Overall I am very satisfied with what I've ordered.

Originally ordered 60/4 with tv/phone in a legacy Charter area pre-merger. Order and install was straight forward and easy. Apartment had been running charter before we moved in so the tech didn't have to do much other than find the right port and make sure signals were good, took 30 minutes from greeting to online.

A few months after the merger I saw in the forums that the "Ultra" tier was starting to be quietly pushed out. Contacted CS and after a few phone calls back and forth was able to cut the TV and phone service and bump up the speed. As we were not using the tv package and the phone at all. Once the activation fee was paid (Placed on the next billing cycle) our monthly costs are now about the same with 300/7 speeds. All the neighbors seem to be on the standard tier so we get the excess capacity when doing speed tests (Around 350 on none peak times, and around 250 on peak)

Haven't had any outages that I haven't caused by fiddling around with the Router and Modem (both provided by Charter). Latency is good for cable, typically around 9ms. Though their peering seems to be all over the place. Titanfall 2 has a 19ms ping and Overwatch has typically 45 - 55 ms ping.

Router: Sagemcom 5260
Modem: Arris TM1602A

Update 11/17:

Moved to Austin area, with legacy TWC spectrum at apartment complex. Been pretty stable so far.

I believe that was in TWC Maxx areas. My area was legacy Charter who haven't done any upstream bonding. So no 20 up for us for now.
