I picked up the self install kit at Charters local office in Septermber of 2001. I had a couple of wiring problems, one was the cable drop from the pole to the house, the other was old cable in my house. Got that taken care of and haven't had any problems since. Tech support both on the phone and at the Charter Forum here at DSLR has been great the couple of times I've needed it. Only a couple outages since I've had the service. Overall I am happy with the service. It works well for my family & my budget.

As of 08-12-09 I am still happy with the service. I'm supposed to get 5000/512 and never test slower than 11000/470.

    Typo?

Either you typoed or you get really great speeds for your plan.

"I'm supposed to get 5000/512 and never test slower than 13000/470."

I assume you meant 1300, and if you test at that often then your getting a lot slower then your plan.

    My Other Reviews·AT&T Midwest
I placed my order on a Sunday online. I scheduled the appointment for between 8am and 10am, and the second time for 10am to 12pm on tuesday. The tech showed up at 9:55am to hook it up. I had the area all ready setup for the cable modem. He hooked me up and called to have the modem provisioned. I tested the internet before he left and we ran into a snag. I was being redirected to charter's self install page. He didn't know anything about it. I tried entering my account number to go through it as I have never seen it before either. I kept on getting an error about my account number. I called tech support and didn't have to wait on hold for more than 30 seconds when I reached someone. He said that I shouldn't be receiving that page at all. He did something on there end and reset my modem. I was now able to get on. I ran a speedtest and I received 10221kbps on download and 980kbps on upload. I have had charter in the past(back before 2005) and they have always been good in my area here. I am glad that they do have a faster speed over AT&T here.

Update 1-25-09: Still going strong, off my contract price of $28, so it's now $65. I can be on anytime of the day and get my 10meg/1meg. No major outages(5min+), other then when the fiber was cut.

Update 8-10-09: Upgraded to the 16mbps package(now 20mbps) couple months back and I get the advertised speeds 24/7. They added a new cap policy and I have gone past it for a couple of months now and not heard anything on it. I have had a signal problem on and off. Working with the Charter rep's in the direct forum gets that problem resolved quick. Anyone in the U.P. that can get charter, I recommend it

    My Other Reviews·Vonage
    ·DSL EXTREME
2 years ago, I dropped Charter because of constant issues with speed and terrible tech & customer support (at least terrible phone support, the guys that came out to my house were very helpful and knowledgeable). I went with DSL but the speeds capped out at 1.5 Mbps... with a Tivo constantly being fed downloads from Netflix, 2 computers, and a VoIP line, I needed a bit more so I thought I'd give Charter a try.

A week into it, the experience has been great. I picked up a self-install kit, installed the new modem, and was up in running quickly (though I did have to call tech support to have the modem provisioned).

The speed has consistently exceeded the advertised 5M down/.5M up speeds.... perhaps Charter provisioned the modem at a higher speed to account for overhead?

    My Other Reviews·Verizon Online DSL
    ·Teliax VOIP
I have never had cable internet before because in this area, it was always slow and high latency. Well, apparently they have upgraded service in a lot of areas here. In some neighborhoods their speeds are pitiful, but most now are EXCELLENT. When I called to set it up I was on the phone for less than 15 minutes with someone who was NOT from India. Three days later the tech turned on the system and delivered my modem. I already had cable service so that was not needed. For a while I had my cable modem hooked to my router and I was only getting 1 megabit instead of the 10 I had paid for. I was frustrated until i connected the modem directly to the computer. I had to authorize it with my account and then it started running full speed. Speed varies some during peak hours, but I can still routinely get 4 megabits, which is still faster than my 3mb dsl line I had. Latency is extremely low 20ms to DSLR servers in NY, many times. If you are in a neighborhood where the copper is good, definitely choose Charter over Verizon. And even if the copper isn't good, the way better customer service may be worth it anyway.

    Update 09-01-08:

Figured out why I am still only getting 4 megabits. They had accidentally set me up on their 5 megabit service instead of the 10. I called them on a Sunday no less and in 15 minutes I am getting 9+mb/900k+ on the DSLR speed tests. Everything should be all nice-nice now, so I am just waiting for my first bill to see if they got it all right, which in the past when I just had cable service, is normally not a problem.

    Update 08-05-09

Just had to upgrade to Charter's 20/2 tier as I was running up against the 100GB cap on my 10/1 connection. Took just 15 minutes on the phone and the upgrade was complete. Now I have 250GB a month to play with. While I do agree caps are evil, 250GB at least is quite reasonable even for a VERY heavy user like me. 100GB would have been enough for me if I didn't watch so much HD video (Do I really have to put a disclaimer in that it is legal HD content? I can't believe the world has come to this.) The last couple of weeks the service has been a tad slow occasionally, but that seems to have gone away.

I must say, despite being bankrupt and having one of the worst customer service reputation in the marketplace, Charter, in this areat at least, couldn't make this geek happier (other than lowering the price of course. Currently I pay $90 a month for analog cable TV and 20/2 internet. That is a promo rate for the upgrade in internet service, will go up to $100 in a few months. Still the best deal we have around here.)

The following was reviewed in the Temple City Area
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------
Charter is reliable. They've been down 3 times in the last 3 years and only once mixed up our tier package. If you live in or around the Temple City, CA area the investment is well worth the consistency. Charter's customer service could be better but overall were happy.

*Update* Charter increased speeds to 2Mbit down and 128Kbit up. THANK YOU! (235KB/s)(16KB/s)

**Second Update_4-1-04** Charter increased speeds to 3Mbit down and 256Kbits up for 10$ more. (375KB/s)(32KB/s)

***Third Update_3-29-05*** Charter still going strong. Good job!

****Fourth Update_6-15-06**** Charter has been reliable with up-time and speed consistency. No problems to speak of. I am happy with the service.

*****Fifth Update_1-25-07***** Still no down time, speeds consistent, overall great service. Charter increased speeds to 5Nbit down and 512Kbit up for free! Thanks.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------

The following was reviewed in the Rancho Cucamonga area.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------
*Update*_12-12-07* I moved out to Rancho Cucamonga and signed up for the 3Mbit/256Kbit and basic cable package @ 44$ per month for 12 months. Installation was a breeze and both the internet and cable services work as advertised. Internet speeds have been consistent and service hasn't been down yet. Would like to see a lower tier option since the plan I'm on is temporary, but word has it you can keep 'renewing' the latest promo. We will see.

**Second Update** 06-27-08 As promised if you call and threaten to cancel the service they will sell you on the newest promo which is always cheaper. I'm paying $44 for 5Mbit/512Kbit service bundled with basic cable service on a 1 year contract. Speeds are fine, and the service doesn't go down. Thank you Charter.

***Third Update*** 01-08-09 Internet and Cable haven't been out and speeds have been great 99.9% of the time. We are still on our 1 year contract. Thank you Charter.

****Fourth Update**** 07-29-09 Since Charter was unwilling to renew our "promotion" our bill went from 43.00 to 83.00 dollars per month for lowest tier internet and lowest tier cable tv. I canceled the service (Way too high!). Good bye Charter.

Why aren't people looking to ban together and making the needed changes for their area?
We are only stuck with that which we are willing to accept.
I'm in Ventura and looking for other's interested in Doing something about this poor service.
Charter has the ball for the moment so let's make sure they get and stay on top of things.

I added a 2nd CM mainly for our PS3, both being 10/1.5 packs and from that day on (3 weeks now) the speeds on both CM's have dropped a great deal. Going less then a half a meg to 10.7megs and at times the Upload is so bad that I can not even test it.

The guys they send out as of today (Many now) only scratch their heads and say sorry we cannot help. Today I actually had one Tech(?) admit it looked like a headend issue, again (Sorry can't help). But they sure can help take your hard earned money!

    Update:
This Charter is really something that is in need of some Good management here in Ventura. Now when I call for support I get hung up on (6 times) so far.
So I called Corp and asked what was going on and get a reply asking how I got this number!!!? Geesh. Anyways, they told me my logs were deleted !!! so we had to start all over!. I also had a few canceled appointments from them for unknown reasons.
For some odd reason I got a call Sat evening (10pm) from back east, wanting to tell me they were working on the problem and it should be fixed by Sunday..
    Sunday? really? LOL

Charter offers a service here like in other cities, so why is it hard for them to supply said service? Keeping in mind that here in Ventura there was already a service in place and working (until charter bought it)....

    I feel ya

Wow you aren't the only one. I got the 20/2mb charter HSI too and I am getting same speeds as you are. Their network cannot support the amount of users and they will not upgrade their damn equipment. Overloaded nodes = slow speeds. Speeds are perfect late at night like at 1-5 AM. That tells you it's THEIR equipment not being able to keep up.

And how dumb do they have to really be to say that they will offer docsis 3.0 60MBPS when they cannot even support 20MBPS docsis 2.0? I doubt we'll see even 30mbps if you sign up for the 60mbps speed.

I gave up trying to call charter even tho they have very nice rep/tech's...there is nothing they can do. My signal levels are perfect according to my modems logs and I verified this with a charter tech on the phone. I even tried 3 different cable modems and I get the same damn results. I just stopped bothering to think about it and am happy with getting the speeds I get which is generally between 10MBPS after work till 1AM and close to 20MBPS between 1-5 AM.

We are all just waiting for a miracle....

Yes the techs have been nice, the problem is with their network. I would suggest you give the BBB & Corp a call if you are still having troubles. That is the only way I made any headway at all to be honest, when I contacted the BBB then things started to really happen.

We have to take a stand, if we don't they will do as they please.
