Modesto,Stanislaus,CA
$47 per month (12 month contract)
about 2 days
AT&T
"Rural Locations where there are no DSL /Cable Digital Lines available & Mobility (I can take it with me to my Moms house)"
"Contract Rollover & Penalties/ Traffic Shaping / Blackouts /Speed"
"If You live way out in the country where Cable /DSL is not available only then would C-W be advisable."

    !! Consider this a RANT !!

I have the Clear-wire Premium Pkg(1.5MB) I bought it at a local PC repair shop here in Northern Cal (DATA COMPUTERS MODESTO CA.) & from Day-1 I had trouble. You see it's supposed to be plug & play, well as soon as I got it home it failed to pick up a signal,so I called the PC repair shop & told them of it & straight away they told Me they did not support the product & that I would need to call Clear-wire, so after a day of trial & error with the Clear-wire rep he had Me take the modem back to the shop 20 miles away & he had the salesmen try & connect with it & it was at that point that the modem itself was deemed bad. Then all of a sudden outta the blue one of the worker's at the shop speaks up & says "oh wait a minute that might be one of the bad ones" like they had a bunch of em but had failed to separate them properly .I swear I hate incompetence!

But regardless there's a Whole lotta Traffic-Shaping going on over at Clear-wire so if You P2P & Your considering Clear-wire as an ISP I'd say DON'T Do It ! For instance let Me tell You of my bout with Clear-wire this week:

After days of frustration & waisted time doing Research,Scans,Cleanups & Post in various forums I finally realized that Clear-wire had put a cap(56kbps) on My Bandwidth & if Clear-wire did try to notify Me of the Cap,then I'd retort with"They didn't try hard enough" & once I got Clear-wire on the phone they talked to Me like I was a criminal & made Me feel as if they were able to remotely view all My families surfing habits,sh*t they even told Me how far I lived from the freeway(very invasive) indeed. So after the Clear-wire Rep read Me the Riot-Act about P2P Bandwidth-Hogging & told of how a girl 13 years old has been ordered by the court to pay Sony a million dollars or some God-awfull amount once she turns 18 due to her violating copyright infringement laws, then & only then did he finally remove the Bandwidth-Cap. Now I'd like to think that an ISP (who I buy a service from) would be the last entity I'd need to be concerned with in regards to monitoring My families E-consumption & after this here last bout with Clear-wire it left Me wondering if in fact they might be overstepping their Boundaries in doing so.I mean to sell something & then monitor what it's used for, seems illegal to Me?

After being with Clear-wire for over 3 years (due to Contract Rollovers) I feel I've had plenty of time to gain a clear perspective of what they offer & it is without any hesitation I have to say "I completely hate Clear-wire" & as a Free American who's Dad & Uncle both fought in Vietnam & who's Grand-PA was in The Big One WW II, I feel comfortable in exerting My rite to say that it's My opinion that Clear-wire Sucks on Big Wet Donkey Balls until The Fullest Level of Orgasmic Achievement is obtained by the Damn Donkey. "I hate You Clear-wire "

Kailua,Honolulu,HI
Contract price not specified.
"Fast setup, and wide availability of sellers."
"Bandwidth throttling making Clear premium (1.5mb/s down, 256kb/s up) and Clear value (756kb/s down, 256kb/s up) the same speed."
"Find a different ISP."

I started off with Clear Value (765kb/s download, 256kb/s upload). However, download speeds were always inconsistent: jumping from 30KB/s to 15KB/s, and going up to 100KB/s, and plummeting back down to 30KB/s, and then leveling off at around 70KB/s. It was difficult to watch online tv, and downloading movies was nearly impossible. The actual speed never reached what was advertised. I then decided that since the next plan was only seven dollars more, and claimed 1.5mb/s down and 256kb/s up, my problems might be solved. Well, I upgraded, and experienced the same problems. My download speeds were always inconsistent, going from 180KB/s to 120KB/s, and then leveling off around 70KB/s. It took the same amount of time to download a 600MB file (a linux distro) with the Clear Premium plan as it did with the Clear Value plan. The upgrade was wasted money. I found out that Clearwire throttles your download speed in order to keep it in an "acceptable" range, so that you don't use up all of the network resources. However, those network resources that we customers are using are resources that we paid good money for. Within the limits of the law, we should be allowed to use them as we see fit. As an analogy, if someone were to give you the choice between purchasing a 10lb burger for $10 and a 5lb burger for $5, with the condition that for each of them you could eat no more than 2lbs because the rest of those burgers you paid for were also sold to other 20 other customers, it would be wrong on the seller's part because (1) there is no difference between the more expensive purchase and the cheaper one and (2) the seller does not have enough of the product to supply to the customers. This is what is going on with Clearwire and Comcast. If I knew about this earlier, I would have gone with another ISP. But because I didn't, I am stuck with this plan for two more years. The plan will end November 2009. If I cancel, I will have to pay them $200 for early cancellation.

If you value your money, and want to get what you pay for, do not purchase a plan from Clearwire.

I used to be a Comcast customer, but moved and decided to try ClearWire out and see how they did. Now, I am not an internet "power user" in the sense that I don't download tons of music/movies or anything of that nature.

I am, however, am an avid on-line gamer and need to have fast, reliable service to play my games!

First off, there is my DSL Reports speed test:

    »/im/40706074/5150.png

Locations: Shoreline, WA (North of Seattle, WA)
    ISP: ClearWire
Modem Signal: 4 to 5 of 5 bars
    Router: VoIP Linksys WRTP54G (Vonage)
    Home Systems:

Desktop 1: Windows Vista Ultimate - Wired to Router
Desktop 2: WindowsXP Home Premium - Wireless 802.11g
Laptop 1: Windows Vista Ultimate - Wireless 802.11g
    Laptop 2: MacOSX - Wireless 802.11g

I bought my ClearWire from a Mall kiosk and was able to take the modem home that day after filling out all the account details. They ran a promotion where I got a discount for the first 4 months (paying $19.99 for 4 months then up to regular price of $44.99/mo + taxes) and get a $75 e-card to spend on-line.

The Customer Service Rep was nice and answered all my questions, but definitely not a tech savvy person, but that's alright. Once I got my modem home, I was able to get it set up and find a place where I was able to get 5 bars almost all the time (sometimes drops to 4 bars) and launch my browser. At first, it had me "activate" on their system through a web site, but after that, it was all ready to go.

Total Setup time from opening the box: ~10 minutes

Now, at first, I was a little disappointed with the speed. It seemed to be pretty spotty with websites and slow off and on, but it was late, so I went to bed. The next morning, I launched my FireFox and was instantly on the net and speeds were blazing.

I decided to play around and do my normal stuff on the net and was very happy with the overall performance of the service.

    Site/Game Performance Reviews:

    Youtube.com - No issues playing/streaming videos.

World Of Warcraft - We have 3 systems that play this game at the same time (we have a gaming family) and when 1 of us or all 3 of us are on the game at the same time, we have no issues and the game runs perfectly.

Final Fantasy XI - Same results as WoW, however, there is only one of us that play.

P2P - I don't P2P much, but WoW uses P2P services to distribute patches that can be in the 200-300MB range. I have not noticed ANY throttling issues with P2P in this capacity. I have used P2P to download CD/DVD Images (600mb to 4GB) using P2P and on all honesty, it is very hard to gauge how well it does unless you have a ton of seeders. So far, everything I have tried to download via P2P has been successful and quite fast.

iTunes - I buy tons of music on iTunes and downloads have always been very fast and responsive.

Various FPS games (First Person Shooters) - Overall low latency and fast ping responses. Once in a while, a hiccup, but hard to say if it is the game/server or ClearWire since it happens once in a while on Comcast also.

Now, the one and only issue that I run into periodically:

This issue is one that MAY be an issue with my system here, but I never had this issue when I was on Comcast, so I am still trying to determine where the issue actually lies.

Once in a while, I go to a page that I have always gone too (myspace.com, google.com, Microsoft.com and the like) and get an error that the server cannot be found and the page fails to render. When this happens, I can go to other sites, but for at least an hour, I can not get to the site that decides to fail on me at all. Of course, support was less than stellar in this regard so I quit bothering them with my issue, although, they credited me a month's service for my troubles.

After some research and wringing my brain for forgotten gems, I dropped to the command prompt and typed:

    ipconfig /flushdns

Low and behold, sites render. Kind of an annoyance, but it fixes it and I have not had the time to look deeper since I am working so many hours. I'll dig deeper and see what I find.

All in all, I have to say that I have been very pleased with the service since it works and I have not had any issues with outages or overall speed. For what I do on the net, it has been great! I even take it over to a friends house (who only has dial-up) so we can play games on the net.

Is Clearwire perfect? No, but who is? Yeah, there are complaints about them on here and other sites, but tell me an ISP that has been in business that has absolutely 100% NO complaints EVER. Didn't think so. =D

I have suggested this service to several friends who have been looking for a cheaper alternative to Comcast/DSL and so far, no complaints from them at all!

canceling 2 yr contract after 6 months...

I was excited to try Clearwire. Within a week the trouble began. First the signal quality doesn't support VOIP. Their technicians were not very helpful, and would not address the real technical issues. So, I dropped VOIP, and decided to just use the internet service.

When it works, it's fine, but for about half the day, speeds drop to useless levels. The techs at Clearwire don't seem to have any real idea about data communications, and generally try to blame the user and user's equipment.

So, I'm willing to eat my contract fee to get out.

When it works, Clearwire is fantastic. When it doesn't, Clearwire pretends a virus is on your computer making it slow. That is their excuse. (Obviously we have all computers scanned and are 100% clean).

Speeds fell to around 56k speed and Clearwire could care less. We have 4 or 5 bars (on the Clearwire modem) indicating a strong connection and have tried the modem on multiple computers in dozens of different locations. What worked it the past is not working now.

We have no choice but to cancel and go back to Comcast - though we hate their stupid billing policies. Do not get stuck in a contract (luckily we are out of our first year) with Clearwire. DSL or a Cable connection is always a better option.

    Best of luck!

    Beware of clear wire.

I used clear wire and it was always hit and miss. Every time I really needed it to work it would fail me. When I signed up they told me my neighborhood was in there coverage area, but I almost never get a signal. Once they lied to me about this and I had signed up for their service they would not do anything to fix the bad connection. The customer service is horrible. They over charged me and lied to me about it on the phone. They have tricky contracts that suck you into continued service agreements after your initial plan expires. They will automatically re-sign you year after year unless you jump through unrealistic hopes to get out of the contract. In frustration about this, I asked clearwire if they would keep unwilling resigning me every year even if I died, and they actually said they will. They said they will charge a dead person for the service indefinitely until the executer of this dead persons estate calls in to cancel, and even then they will charge this dead person an early termination fee.

Does that sound like a company that you want to do business with?
With practices like this, and an all around horrible product, I am quite certain that clearwire will be out of business in the next 2-3 years. Unless of course they can keep charging all of there clients who have died waiting for a hopeless connection.

I signed up for this in service in Seattle and was then recruited to sell it. I was told by company representatives that they supported and did not regulate the following, which in fact they clearly do not support or clearly do regulate:

    - p2p (regulated by "bandwidth shaping" software, which means your connection is throttled down to zero in short order).
    - streaming (same) Forget internet radio, etc.
    - newsgroups are not supported at all. When I spoke to "support" and asked where in my EULA it stated they did not support newsgroups they said they did not have to mention that in their contract because they had never supported it! Huh??? Look here: »www.clearwire.com/company/legal/aup.htm Clearlydishonest.

-their service, as is, is hit or miss. I often can't get a better than dial-up connection. What is the point of having broadband if you can't get the speed or even do p2p? 60% OF ALL INTERNET TRAFFIC IS P2P!

Support is polite but scripted and my escalation requests resulted in promised call backs that never happened.

Clearwire is not interested in supporting long term relationships with it's clients. My tenure at Clearwire was brief but my service contract is for 2 years with a $180 early termination fee. I'm a sucker. I'm not getting what I paid for. The owner (I've learned) is a locally imfamous billionaire who has a history of building out the bare infrastructures of techno behemoths and then selling high while suckering and screwing customers and investors in the process. Google the company.

Look elsewhere for broadband. To call this service such is a misnomer.

    I hate clearwire too

what a piece of junk!! Then they won't let you out of the contract even if as they say "if you are not getting a good internet connection and speed" not only that watch they will just renew your contract if you don't respond to the email they send about renewing. I can't wait to get out of this contract and in the note on my clearwire account it states CUSTOMER IS NOT INTERESTED IN RENEWING CONTRACT they tell me even with that I still have to make sure I see the email they send and respond letting them know I want to cancel - THEY SUCK!!!
ARUG!!! It takes all I have just to post this - its so slow!!

    Clearwire - Terrible Service

So i signed up for it exactly a year ago, brought i home and hooked it up, and enjoyed dialup speed connections for about a week, so i called them and told them how shitty it was, all they could say is, well try out our premium clear wire.
So i thought that sounded like a good idea, so i upgraded my account, they also extended the contract day out for a full year, from when i upgrade my plan.
So now im here payin 48 dollars a month (40 for the shitty internet, 5 for the crap modem, and 2 for taxes)

Luckily, you can Freeze your service with them for 6 months, costing $20 just to pause it, then they automatically start charging you after that 6 months.

Terrible for anything other than sending emails and IMs

These guys provide a poor service and then do all they can screw customers into a contract. They're trying to get all they can from suckers who sign up for it; that'd be fine if they described how the service works.

The law requires Clearwire allow you out of the contract within 7 days. Clearwire won't tell you that in their terms, but they will tell you on the phone. And then they'll chuckle a little about how they don't advertise that there is a grace period.

Overall it was a very poor experience.

I cancelled my debit card so they couldn't charge me (I recommend doing this before trying to cancel). Now they'll send it to collections and I still won't pay them. Prediction: clearwire goes under or gets bought by the end of 2007.

When I first got clearwire is was the cats meow. The last 9 months it was going downhill fast. We had it for our company and the same thing happened there. I delt with tech support for a month and a half. there waisting my time trying to solve the problem. The only way we solved the problem was going with a differnt carrier. Now life is great with the new carrier. Same service as clearwire but reliable and netadmin minimum. I would not recomend this service to anyone. They have problems and want to charege you an arm and a leg to cancel the service. Bottom line any provider but clearewire. And I am a network administrator.

I used to sell this service in Seattle. They advertise 2 speeds. There is no way they can consistently deliver what they sell as far as bandwidth goes. When you pay for the faster service you get less pipe than the slower service most of the time. So why do they charge more for what they know they can't deliver? They couldn't explain that to me and I couldn't be dishonest for them. I quit.

Class action sounds inevitable as they don't come close to the 1.5 mgb down they promise and charge more for. There are so many other things wrong with this service....

    Clearwire sucks

all these comments are right ya know. Clearwire is very poor, they block all ports, and disallows torrenting. among other things, the contracts are to long and the cost to much just for the speed, the uploadings is HORRIBLE. and the DL speed leaves much to be desired. once my contract is up im getting the heck rid of it. Poor Speeds

For the most part, my service has been decent in the Anchorage, Alaska area. I had problems a few months ago, I believed they were throttling my connection, I had tried calling their tech support, and they had me do speed tests at toast.net, what a joke. She then deduced that I probably had spyware or a virus that was limiting my bandwith, which was not the case, she then preceeded to open a ticket that they would pass on to diffrent people in the tech support department. Despite what I read here, I did recieve a call back, however my service did not improve for a couple days. My connection has not been throttled since that incident, but I am unhappy with their upload speeds, and I am also unhappy they do not provide a news server. I live in Anchorage, Alaska.

    77kbps

I'm paying extra for no 750 kpbs limit, and I regularly get 120-140 kbs - ISDN speed. Today I'm averaging 77kbps, slower than ISDN. Clearwire advertizes speeds comparable to broadband and they deliver speeds inferior to ISDN via a phone line. When I get time this evening I'm going to file a complaint with our state AG's office (WA) claiming consumer fraud and violation of the state's consumer protection act.

recommend them to an enemy even at this point! This account was given
to me for a year by a friend to help me be able to show and sell my art
on the Internet because I am disabled and the service works so lousy in
trying to upload print files because they are throttling bandwidth on
everyone. This is not how they represent their service to be!!!!

    clearwire

Clearwire is not for those users that use p2p applications. The ports for those are managed. It is geared toward the internet user that uses the internet for browsing, email, and small downloads. Not for those who do chat while downloading off bit torrent, and playing a game at the same time.

    Re: clearwire

I am in Seattle, and at 11.45 PM last night I was nearly getting 2 MB , but wait till 6PM tomorrow it goes back down to 300 KB at times for like 20 minutes. I have called them 4 times and every time it is the same step they make me do, unplug this, reboot this, Like some pre-recorded message. I have never talked to anyone that seems to be somewhat familiar with any technology, or have any real diagnosing skills. They like to tell me that I am only ½ mile from the tower so they don’t know why it doesn’t work,.
Also watch out they like to pull out extra money from your credit card. In my case, on 2 different occasions, they pulled out an extra $350, and it took me 2+ weeks every time and many phone calls to get it back.
The people in tech support, or even in their finance or retention department are unable to do anything out of the norm, like discount me a month for my troubles or so. At Comcast ( I can’t hardly believe I am talking favorable about Comcast now ) that was never a problem. They say only if it totally doesn’t work can they do this, and as I have 300KB they is nothing they can do. Let me see I pay for 1.5 and get 1/5 of the service and they still expect me to pay full price. In what industry do you only get 1/5 of what you pay for and then tell you that this is normal? I hope other industries don’t get a hold of this idea . Can you imagine going to Safeway and I buying 5 apples , but actually only get 1 , and they tell that is normal , you don’t always get exactly what you pay for , only if we would have given you 0 apples do we give money back.
Clearwire makes any previous communications company who was worst in customer service look really good by now.

    Clearwire - Jacksonville

Clearwire is the shittiest crappy piece of Internet I have ever seen. They said I should get 5 bars in my area and I am stuck on a slow, crappy 1-2 bar internet. I would not recommend Clearwire for anyone. The shittest internet. In 1 month I'm getting Comcast, which is real, reliable internet.

Clearwire's customer service isn't bad. They try to help in most situations and have English speakers, but their service sucks.

    Clearwire- Just Say No!!!

I am a customer service representative, working in a call center environment. Believe me when I say that I know customer service. Clearwire wouldn't know good customer service if it jumped up and bit them in the A$$.

My original premise for getting Clearwire's service was to use at work to watch MLB.tv on the evening shift. No such luck. It wouldn't even connect at my desk. It would connect with 5 bars at home.

I gave it a chance for a month. At first, the service worked great. Then I started receiving intermittent connection speeds, and lag times of 3 minutes to 5 hours. When I called Clearwire's tech support, they advised me that there was nothing wrong with their equipment. They advised that the problem was with my brand new LinkSys wireless router. The very same router that I had connected to a cable modem and receiving flawless service. I told them they were out of their F@#&ing mind.

A few days later, I called Clearwire and spoke to their retention department. I explained that I wanted to cancel service. I explained that their service wasn't what I would recommend to even my worst enemy. The young man I spoke with explained that the problem with my service was not with their equipment. But with the fact that I didn't research their service before signing a contract with Clearwire. Now, after 8 years working in customer service, never have I attempted to retain a customer's business by insulting them. That just gave me all the more reason to let anyone know NOT to sign up with Clearwire.

I only have one positive thing to say about Clearwire. They provided me with a prepaid UPS label to send back the modem. Which is great, considering if I was going to have to pay to send back their equipment, it was going to take a trip through a wood chipper first.

I'll mirror the other posts I've read. I wouldn't recommend this service to my own worst enemy. I just wish they would stop sending me emails to complete surveys. I'll be glad to tell one of their outside companies that Clearwire sucks. Just give me a link, and I'll do the survey once or twice a day.

Lagging my ass off in JVille!

Totally agreed with all these posts. We're in Jacksonville, FL, and after about 2 hours of doing a ballet around 2 to 3 different rooms, spinning the modem every which way but loose, sticking it in every opening in the room just shy of my buttcrack, even trying to open the windows for a better signal, we get on average 2 bars, sometimes it might even boost up to 4 for a minute or 2. The connection thus far seem alright, but I'm sure with enough downloads and actual online geekness it'll probably bare the burden, (this being spoken by a certified Network Administration and Engineer). Ironically, my roommate has called tech-support a few times, and this time, at about 11pm the agent actually tried suggesting we point the modem east, and then suggested south. I looked out the window quickly to find out what side of the sky the sun had set on, but alas, it was pitch black, and I was left thinking, wtf is the guy smoking!? Then he suggested we be as high as possible (of course, I'm pretty sure HE was referring to the modem) I was half tempted to make hardcore inhaling sounds over the phone and say, "yay, at least when one is wasted, your service doesn't seem near as shitty, but even more buttass hilarious". Ooh, just checked, and we have 4 bars... *looks at watch* just you wait though, in about 5-10 minutes, I can almost assure you it'll be about 1 and a half. Even funnier, the tech-support had mentioned you need at least 2 bars lit to be able to get online. Now, I may be a few notches shy of a rocket-scientist and all that, but is it me, or does it seem silly then to even have that first bar on the modem if you need at least the second one. I mean, what else can you do with just one bar, besides using it as a really new-age funky nightlight??

Anywho, we totally agree, and really wish clearwire would get their cards in order, especially since it's obvious they're not shuffling a full deck. Q

Btw, I forgot to mention, that at least this tech-support didn't suggest we only lived 1/2 a mile from a tower, but instead had big and brass enough cahunas to suggest we had a tower really nearby in all 4 directions... really? We do? Gee, you'd think if that were the case we wouldn't be the broken-down FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily) dragging butt at about 5.25mph down the Information SuperHighway creeping along in the breakdown lane, hoping and praying that by some strange streak of luck, we might just actually be blown into the fast lane!

Clearview needs to just give us all a refund

I signed up for clearwire and it worked out great during the trial period. Then my internet turns off about 10x a day where I have to get up and restart my Linksys router. The tech support are sooo ignorant. They told me that the reason my connection is slow is because I have two laptops using my internet and each gets half the speed. That is why when you go to Panera, everyones speed is barely speed. I mean seriously what a dumbshit. I love it how they have Clearwire people everywhere trying to sell you the shit but no one is available if you have an issue. I agree with everyone on the basis that the contracts should be void is service is not deliverable as promised. I call tech support and they are telling me that my internet is working great but I am not connected. I am going to see if I can find some flaw in their user agreement which would be to our advantage. I specifically asked if I could watch streamlining videos and they said yes. God, we have to be able to do something about these suckers.

Re: Clearview needs to just give us all a refund

Iam posting from anchorage, alaska. i signed a 2 year contract with them (stupid me). the first few months were great, no problems. now, it's just stupid slow. i like to play WoW after work however each time i connect i get a ping of 700-1200. sometimes i simply cannot connected because i drop out, i have contacted clearwire tech "support" many, many times. i have trouble shooted my system to no avail. i have used other pc's connected to my clearwire modem and still horrible service.

when i check my speed on speedtest.net it's typically around 600kb/100kb connected with a ping of around 400. IM PAYING FOR A 1.5MB/256KB CONNECTION. last time i called clearwire i clearly stated that iam not getting what im paying for, i asked to cancel the contract and they pretty much laughed at me. why should i have to pay 180 bucks? im holding up to my part of the deal and they are throwing me table scraps. If you are reading this, thinking about getting clearwire do yourself a favor. atleast get dialup. and if you must try clearwire DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT!!

    I hate clearwire

    @aol.com

    Clearwire sucks!

I hate cleanwire. Ever since my husband and I got the service it has been noting but trouble! The most we ever get are two bars and even then, dial up is way better. If there is a cloud in the sky, good luck trying to do anything on line! I have a new baby, so with family out of town I try to send videos and picture to keep them updated on the baby. Evey time I try I get kicked off line because I always lose internet connection! On top of all of that, customer service SUCKS! My husband and I only keep bill money in the bank so when clearwire charged us 4 time for one month, we had NSF's. They refunded our money, but they did not pay for our NSF's witch was there fault! We were also told when we singed up for service that we would get a free month after having the service for 3 months, and what do you know, they still charged us for that month. When we called them about it, they had no idea what we were talking about!
PLEASE don't waste your money! You are better off with dial up or cable.

    Worst ISP Nightmare

Horrible outages, horrible speeds (not even CLOSE to broadband), horrible customer service, and on top of it all, it costs nearly two HUNDRED dollars to break the contract. You get NOTHING out of this but a headache, guaranteed! Try it, I dare you!!
