    My Other Reviews·Comcast
Steady speeds when connected. Service has been steady(on) for about 2 months straight, for the first few months it would constantly disconnect.

    ***Update

I switched back to Comcast on 7/7/08. I kept getting frequent disconnects and very lousy speeds. Comcast is about 30 dollars more a month but Im getting 4 times+ in speed increase and no disconnects. Windstream would be good for a casual surfer where I live, but if you do more than just surf then you definetly want Comcast.

The only reason I got windstream was it was the only DSL / Phone provider in my area. I got the 6.0 service and was told I could get the 12.0 Svc. Placed an order last week, still haven't heard anything. The techs brag about making 26.00 an hr but don't know how to connect phone lines. After the tech left, I had to open the phone box and do it myself. They provided some cheap modem that I wont use. I used to have AT&T in Florida so I kept my 2Wire modem. Overall experience sucks with windstream. If you have a choice, go with someone else.

    July 17, 2008

Switched to Greenstreak DSL from Windstream. Because I called to switch, they cut off all my services for 1 week, then turned the phone back on with a different number and waited 5 more days to turn the DSL back on. There is something wrong with these people. And the packet loss and lag from windstream is horrible. I use VoIP and the line cuts out so much it's aggrivating! I subscribe to the 3000/384 and is getting actual speeds of 0988/132. Which really sucks. I mean it, if you have a chioce other than Windstream, please take the offer. I wish AT&T would buy out Windstream and fix everything. It would be so much better!

Lets not jump to conclusions here...

...how do you know that it isn't on your end? Go over to the windstream forums and see if someone can help you. When posting for help, make sure you post your SNR/Atten. stats. To do this, type in 192.168.254.254 (you must be directly connected to the modem for this). Username and password are admin/admin by default. Once in, go to DSL stats and see what's going on there. Check your Sync rate as well. Low SNR means either there is electrical interference or that you are too far away from the DSLAM to consistently hold 3+ meg speeds. High atten. means the same thing, but that number can never be changed. It is the reflection to the distance you are from the DSLAM.

Blows Time Warner in my area away for reliability and uptime. I had cable internet for 8 years until Time Warner obtained my area and turned it into a pile of crap.

DSL from Windstream has been a refreshing change from the bungling and problems I had with my previous ISP.

    My Other Reviews·SouthEast Telephone
There is three choices here for service dail-up, cable, and dsl. I had cable and moved, they told Me I would have to have my service turned off and wait a month to get it back. That made me mad, so i called the phone company to see if I could get dsl. Took them about a week to get me setup. The lady at Alltel was really nice to me, seem to know what she was talking about. My speed test seem to always be about the same no matter when I run them. So I can't say anything bad about them.

I tried a different service provider here in Morehead, Well I'm back with With Windstream.

I have the 12mb/768 service, and I'm very happy with it.

Its always up. Tech support is a little lacking, as far as understanding, and hearing them.

If they would move tech support back to the states it would be nice.

I think Windstream is also my Telco, they are the only telco in this rural area of KY. I don't think I have ever had an outage for more than a few seconds in 2+ years and before Wipro, service was the best.

It is almost amusing that they called me to offer 6M for another $5 per month and 10 days later I called the toll free they gave me, could not get to a human. called the regular toll free, got Wipro, the same guy I always speak with apologized and said he would take care of it,,,still only get about 2100 on a good day and I am a geek, I know most of the tricks I think.

    They aren't BAD,but they sure aren't GOOD.

Yea Wipro sucks. If you want this resolved, call the sales line and tell them that you can't get this resolved over at Wipro. Just for the record, what was the name of the guy you talked to? JW, I'm guessing it was Peter Pan (WHY DO THEY TAKE AMERICAN NAMES??)

Thanks for the suggestion about the sales line, I am going to try it this morning because,,,,,both home and office are back down to 3MB down/314 up instead of the 6/384 I am paying.

The "Guy" in Calcutta ( I asked) has taken the name "Daniel". R U serious about Peter Pan?

"really nothing good to say"
"They are slower than other telcos in my area and have horrible customer service"
"If I had another DSL option; I'd take it."

I had to switch from SBC to Windstream when I moved. It cost more than my previous provider and the speeds were slower. (about 1.0mbs vs 2.2mbs with SBC).

A year with Windstream we moved within the city to a newer home. From day one at the new house my DSL wouldn't work. Several telephone calls before I was able to convince them the problem was not my computer, my router, or my modem.

Turns out the phone tech or the builder had the wires backward on the outside of the house.
A tech came to the house and fixed it from the outside in about 10 minutes.

Last month I learned that 3.0mbs was finally available in my neighborhood.
They mailed me a new modem (I'm told it was required). I got the new modem and it wouldn't connect. Took a couple telephone calls to tech line. Finally, I called Billing back and the original work order was never finalized correctly. They told me they'd put the change order back in. A couple days later and still no faster speed. Took a couple of more telephone calls and I still don't have the faster speed.

I can't get the tech line in India to put me through to Level 2. My next step is to call or write the HQ. I've wasted at least 8 hours on the telephone trying to get my issue fixed.

After 8 phone calls to their regular support and sales lines; I finally in frustration e-mailed their CEO and my line was fixed the same day!

Re: I had to e-mail the CEO and other people at HQ

I called about poor dsl speed for 5 years. Last week I called phone repair instead, even the office could hear all the line noise. The first tech said everything was ok. Two days later the phone went dead. The next tech took the time to trace down the line a few poles, then back to my place. There at the first pole he found where a critter had chewed out the back of the phone box. When it rained the box filled with water, all the connections were corroded and muck had filled it in. I mentioned a few times over the years that it seemed rain related, but was ignored. Billing zeroed my bill for next month, small compensation for years of poor service. The bright side is that my dsl is now 'normal', sometimes up and always slower then rated speed. It is working much better though, so my switch to wireless has been delayed.

When I first relocated to the relatively low population area in North GA I soon found out that the only Internet services available were dial up (slow) and Satellite (expensive to set up and dial up speed for upload). After almost two years of trying to get service we finally got a group of about 20 residents in the area to sign intention to get DSL if available. We got this to the right manager in Alltel and they finally got the local equipment upgraded to support DSL! I spotted a local field tech and he had a contract to sign (12 months/free Modem etc with DIY install). I signed up and in a few days got the set up kit from Alltel. I called in and they setup the DSL upgrade for a few days later, so you could say the sign up to success time was about a week but the time from the first attempt to get DSL to success was about two years.
So far the connection has been reliable with speeds of 1100 to 1200 up (1500 advertised) and 200 up (128 advertised). The Modem is a Speedstream 5200 setup for PPPoE with dynamic IP. They say they will give out static IP if requested, I believe there is no extra charge.

    update August 5. 2005

Appears that I was incorrect about no charge for static IP, another poster corrected this and is right. In my area they want an additional $40/month for the Static IP for a total of $79. In spite of their ads the Ultra Tier (3000 download) is not yet available here. They did bump the upload to 384 on 14 July 2005. My area has no real competition for Alltel, they have exclusive phone and cable services. I guess I have to satisfied with what I have, it is reliable but a little overpriced.

    update 17 July, 2006

A couple of months ago my area qualified for the Ultra (3K download) service. I called to do the upgrade and found that there some new options that allowed me to bundle the upgrade and change to the flat rate long distance plan by Alltel. Their LD plan was cheaper than AT&T and the bundle allowed me to get the higher DSL speed at a cheaper price also. Since I have no alternate choice for broadband service (Alltel is also my CATV carrier and does not offer cable internet) it does not make sense to use VOIP. Therefore I took the bundle offer until some other options are available.

On the plus side we almost never loose connectivity or speed. On the down side I still wish they would raise the upload cap from 384K to 1000K or even 512K

    Update 22 May 2008

DSL drops periodically after upgrade from 3 Mbps to 6 Mbps

Have be using Windstream (formerly Alltel) DSL at the 3 Mbps rate since it became available in my area (July 2006). SNR was about 21 and Attn 25. Service was reliable and often ran for weeks, even months without loss or drop out of service. Provisioning was at 3084/384 (I believe) and set for Interleave.

Recently was told that my area was eligible for upgrade to 6 Mbps service for ~$5/month more. requested the upgrade and after a few days and a few calls the service was re-provisioned at 7200/384, set for FAST and speed tests indicated it was working ok. A check of SNR indicated it varied from about 8 to 12 with an average of ~10, Attn was steady at 26.5. All was fine for about 4 days when internet connection was lost. SNR was displayed a -4. Rebooting the modem (SS 4200 f/w 004-D241-A83) corrected the problem. The SNR had dropped to 6 just before the loss of service. Drop outs have continued on a somewhat regular basis (3 to 4 days). Tried using a different SS 4200 and a Netgear DG384 with the same results. There is a whole house splitter at the NID with a dedicated Cat5e run to the Modem.

    Some questions;

    1. Is the current SNR/Attn sufficient to support 6 Mbps service? If not can SNR be improved?

    2. I realize that this problem may be minor compared to others reporting here but is it too much to ask that the 6 Mbps service be a reliable as the 3 Mbps service was?

    3. Since the CSRs in India(?) have not been much help who should be contacted, if anyone?

    4. Should I just pack it in and and ask that my service be reset to 3 Mbps?

The main reason I don't want to have to reboot ever 3-4 days is that I often want make use of remote desktop login when away from home.

PS; have checked connections at NID and in house, all seem secure.

    Update 6 June 2008

    After some investigation and testing by local Windstream tech reps have decided to go back to the 3 meg service. Rather have a solid reliable connection at 3 meg than an unreliable one at 6 meg. See the thread I started on this here;
»DSL drops periodically after upgrde from 3 Mbps to 6 Mbps

"Went from Great to Very Bad"
"Look Elsewhere"

I began with Windstream when it was Alltel, probably five years ago. They had the most competent Technical Support, when they were Alltel, that I've ever used. When the company changed and went to Windstream, they adopted overseas support. Windstream now has the worst Technical Support I've ever used.

Not only that, but several Indians have told me that Windstream considers me to be getting the 6 Mb/s I'm paying for, as long as my bandwidth is equal to 60% of that subscription rate. That's criminal and fraudulent.

I was told today, June 6, 2008, that Windstream is going to raise all DSL rates by $15 per month, beginning July, 2008. I, for one, will NOT PAY THAT. It's bad enough that I'm paying what I am for the current subscription, but with the deteriorating bandwidth I've experienced, the fraud, and the horrid tech support, I will never pay them more than now.

Windstream is, by all standards, the worst Internet Service Provider (ISP) I've used since 1997, the year I first began using internet. Alltel was the best ISP I ever used; Windstream is the worst!

Sorry, you're not happy w/ WS. I belive we are all kind of fed-up with Wipro. But, Windstream does have tech support here in the U.S. I can't reply in regards to your local store. $24 a month isn't bad for "fast DSL" though!! You should check out the Windstream forums, & you could get some helpful info, & get a number for tech support here in the U.S.
