.... Yes, this is a rip from my own forum entry, probably should have posted it here to begin with....

In July, Windstream told me that IPv6 is available across the whole footprint.

Ordered the service in August.

There is an ugly story that includes a power pole that was rotten. Owned by Windstream. Fixed 4 months later by a sub contractor. Then Windstream cancelled my order without informing me.
So, I had to reorder once the cancellation was discovered. Yep, end of January.

Finally installed in February. in fact, this past Friday.

Spent Saturday trying to listen for IPv6 broadcasts over the fiber... And nothing. Spent the rest of Saturday teaching CSRs about IPv6.

Finally was transferred to a CSR that deals with disconnections. She listened to my story. Then made a few phone calls. Reported to me that it is available. Just need to use a Windstream Modem (Yes, all CSRs seem to refer to the device that provides a connection between the ONT and an internal network as an analog Modulator/Demodulator).

So, early on Monday morning (Today) I made a visit to my local retail store and picked up a Windstream Modem. Plugged it in. A fresh from the box Nokia. And it connected very quickly to the TR069 channel. And even has a little MQTT for good measure. Pretty impressive.

And yet, the Mode is stuck on IPv4. It looks like in the HTML code is a hidden selector for IPv6. So, this router probably supports IPv6 just fine.

Monday was spent on the phone asking "Where is the IPv6?" (Anybody remember "Where's the BEEF") Yes, more training.
Then I got routed to another CSR in the disconnection department. She reported IPv6 was available and running. Just need to have it activated by a Level 2 person. So, another long wait on the phone for a Level 2 tech.

This guy was very frank.... "We dont have IPv6...anywhere. But, IPv4 can connect directly to IPv6 and it's never a problem".
I appreciated the first part of his comment greatly. It stopped me from chasing the impossible. The second part has me bothered.

After this call I cancelled. Total time on Windstream Friday -- Monday.

Overall the disconnection CSRs seemed to push and pull a few more buttons to get answers.
Meanwhile the rank and file CSRs were very interested in transferring me to Repair, Billing, TV, Phone and internet.
---I think I heard chickens in the background of some of the CSRs.
And Windstream.... If you are hearing this... Please, for the LOVE OF GOD, ensure your potential customers and CSRs know that IPv6 is not supported.

I'm looking forward when I can work over fiber. Yes, my current work has a requirement for IPv6.

And as a final PostScript:
As I returned the equipment today, the retail clerk was politely aghast at the service I've received. She couldn't believe it. I'm very confident that her skill at calming down the customer were in full play. And I fully expect that there will be no lessons learned. Well, my lesson of expecting Windstream to have accurate information about their own product will be remembered.

I had Windstream fiber at my previous address. And it was fantastic. I never had any connection issues or outages.

However after moving 5 blocks across town. I was stuck with slow unreliable DSL. My connection would drop out daily. I would have to power cycle my modem every day sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. And on top of that it was unusable for many tasks.

Edited do to my most recent experience with them.

What are you doing that you want faster speed? You probably don't even notice the difference between 500/500 and 1GiB.

Re: 1 gig

I run a bunch of servers for CCTV footage and Nas servers. The added cost of electric to run the servers is getting pricy. If i could have a higher upload i could move a lot of my storage to the cloud. And save on electric. So that is why i wish they offered faster plans here. I am stuck in a town that doesn't allow you to shop around for electric. So my electric bill is around $500-$800 a month.

A lot people will say to just move someplace else. But thats not an easy solution for everyone. And yes my use case is a bit different than the average user.

Re: 1 gig

Do you have a business plan? That is what it sounds like you need.

Why are you running all of those servers and cameras? Are they all wired? Trying to do it all via wireless will be the problem.

You probably don't need faster service, you probably need better hardware. Is your service giving you the same upload and download? If not, that's your issue - not the speed.

Re: 1 gig

I have symmetrical 1Gb. And my network is all 10Gbe. Other than a few 2.5Gb Wifi 6E AP's. It's not the equipment it's the use case. I want to be able to upload my camera footage. Every 2 hours. Which slows down the upload for other tasks on the network.

Ill be upgrading to 2Gb. Whenever Windstream decides to bring it to my town. The only other option in town in comcast 6Gb. But that is $299 a month. And that probably isn't symmetrical. And comcast probably has a data cap.

I might not need faster. But i will gladly pay for it. Just so i don't have these slow downs every so often. Also when i want to download something i want it now. I don't want to wait 5mins to download from my cloud.

Windstream won't disconnect your account

Hello. We apologize for any any inconvenience that this may be causing and I am certain your account is disconnected if you requested it to be disconnected. It is possible that your Windstream email may still be active.
Are you still pulling web pages that are not cached?
I would be more than happy to check into this for you if you would post your account number to the direct forums.

Thank you

Had comcrap at my place in the far burbs. I`m on the edge of their territory, speeds were weird.. sometimes (late nite) would get good speeds (100mb-ish), but during daylight hours, particularly just after dinnertime, speeds were 30-40mb. Upload was crap at 5-7mb

Then I see trucks pullin fiber along the poles on the road. No names on trucks tho. Month later, I see a fiber connection box on my pole, and did a little happy dance. Tried calling Windstream, was told theres only 7mbit DSL. pfft. Did some searching, then came upon Kinetic. I guess its their new brand of service, to get away from the dsl branding.

Install was quick and painless, I helped the installer run my drop from the pole, as I had quite a few trees to go thru and I needed to go back to work asap. Was up and running 15min after the drop was done. Installer was convinced I had to use the Windstream wifi router, didnt believe the ethernet from the ONT would work on any router. (i aint payin that monthly rental crap). This has got to be the smallest ONT Ive ever seen. Its the size of a deck of cards, made by AdTran

So far, speeds have been great, latency is sub 8ms, no complaints. Would highly recommend this service to anyone in their area!

Update 3 (May 2021): Minor update. I was finally able to have the landline service removed from the account, which saves us almost $50 a month on charges, taxes, and fees. My new monthly cost is about $85 (I haven't received a new bill with the lower amount on it yet). WS has been active in my neighborhood in recent weeks. I've seen a contractor crew burying fiber conduit in the older parts of the neighborhood, and the Kinetic yard signs are going up all over the place. I've also seen more Kinetic trucks and vans driving around. Service is still rock solid and well worth every penny we pay for it. I just wish they would turn in IPv6 for residential customers...

Update 2 (December 2020): So it's been almost four years since the install (wow), and this has been the absolute most rock-solid internet I have seen. The only outage I have experienced was the big national DNS issue that happened a year ago or so. I do not really count that as a "ding" against WS because, well, sometimes mistakes get made, and it isn't something that was specific to my area. But other than that I have consistently gotten 90%+ of advertised line speed both up and down using just the web based version of speedtest.net. If I put some effort into picking the right server and using speedtest-cli (to minimize interference from potential browser issues), I can usually get around 950+ both up and down. Ping times to WS's own local speedtest.net servers are around 4ms, and go up to around 20ms to 40ms for both severs located in Atlanta and NOVA (which I believe to be two of their peering locations for the East coast). These severs were both the internal WS ones as well as a few other universities and large providers (AT&T). Both my wife and I have been WFH for months now, which included having the kids home for a few weeks at the beginning. There were no problems with both of us connected to our employers' VPN servers while the kids were doing simultaneous "Zoom calls" and streaming movies all at the same time.

We were mildly concerned with what might happen during the Chapter 11 filing, but it appears that has resolved and WS is on a more stable footing (at least for the time being). The price has pretty much stayed the same, ~$120 a month "out the door", and we still have the completely useless landline. (I actually do not even know the phone number for it.) I recall that one time a few years back it increased somewhat, and I called in to ask what they could do about it. I basically just asked if there was any way they could get me back closer to the original $120 deal, and the CS rep wound up offering me a ~$10 a month credit. What was nice about this is that I did not threaten to switch providers at all. I told her, quite frankly, that the service was great and we were going to stick with WS even if she couldn't offer me anything. In the end, though, she did give us the recurring credit, and we are more than happy to pay the monthly price as the service is definitely worth that amount to us. The only other opportunity we have is Spectrum, whose best current offer is 1G down and ~ 300 (or so) up for the same price. We have no intention of switching, since the service is the same price for asymmetric service. Also, since they already have most of the homes in the neighborhood, I suspect the local nodes are more likely to be oversold and slower. From what I have seen on our local Nextdoor community, they seem to have the usual problems with outages and slowdowns. I have never seen anyone say anything about WS on there.

A quick note about hardware, I have a full Unifi setup from Ubiquiti throughout the house. The ONT runs directly into my Dream Machine Pro (UDM-P), which has no problem pulling an IP address via DHCP. The UDM-P then shares the connection with about 30+ clients (both wired and wireless) with no problems. There is no filtering or firewalling of the connection by WS that I can tell, and I have been able to set up several public-facing servers with no problems (including ssh, http, https, bittorrent, and a few others, both on standard ports and non-standard ports).

The only criticism I can come up with is that there is no IPv6 service at all. I periodically check the WAN interface on my router for any sign of IPv6 traffic, and only see my UDM-P's occasional dhcp6 solicitations with no replies ("tcpdump -i eth8 -vv ip6"). I would appreciate having this, since it would enable my to more easily access more of the internal hosts that I would like to reach without having to worry about figuring out Ubiquiti's strange firewall / port forwarding setup for Unifi. I really wish they would enable IPv6.

So to sum it up, we are beyond happy with WS for our service. Our 1gig symmetrical fiber link has been rock solid since day 1, and we consistently get 95% of our advertised speeds along with excellent latency. The price per month is reasonable, and the service is a great value at that price point. Given all of this, some other provider is going to have to offer a whole lot to get us to switch. And, quite frankly, I just do not see that happening anytime soon.

--

Update: Received the first bill for the first month of service, and unfortunately all of the taxes and fees on the phone line eat up most of the savings I had over my old TWC service. The promotional offer I got requires bundled phone service which tacks on about $31.78 of extra non-negotiable fees, taxes, and surcharges. While I still save $12 a month over TWC for 4 times the speed, it still is not as much as I was expecting to save. I also hope that I am able to either completely drop this phone line after the year is up and *not* pay all these fees, or they make me another retention offer that is close to or matches the current rate. Otherwise, I am not sure I can stay after the promotional offer is up. I also had the CSR remove (or add a credit to offset) the modem rental fee. She was confused when I told her I did not accept the "modem," and everything still works fine. She checked around a bit, and then "took it off the account".

Original Review:

I had been waiting for almost ten years to get gigabit fiber service, and it's finally here. One gigabit fiber for ~$45 / month for the first year, then $118 / month after that. I was told there would likely be a retention offer made after the first year, but that's still not a bad price for what you get, especially when you average the cost out over two years. The introductory offer included a $100 statement credit, half of which covers the install fee. This leaves the other $50 to cover the first month's service. The bundle also includes landline service, which must be included for at least the first year. They included both the "modem rental fee" and some type of ID theft / antivirus protection, which I had to call back and push to get removed. The offer also included an introductory rate for Kinetic IPTV service at a reduced rate, but I was not interested in TV service.

Ordering was straightforward, I had been regularly checking the WS website to see what was available in my area. I knew my neighborhood had fiber service for years, but WS never offered more than 30/5 for the same price TWC charges for 300/50. A few months ago, WS started sending out mailers advertising Gigabit service, so I started checking on a more regular basis. The latest time I checked my address on the website, it offered me the gigabit service at the rate I listed above, so I jumped on it. I actually called in to get the service because I had a few questions first, and the CSR honored the "online only" offer when I called. She told me I had to include the landline for at lest the first year, and it could be dropped after that. She also said the "modem rental fee" had to be included. We scheduled the install, and all was in place. The CSR was very friendly and tried to answer all of my very technical questions as best as she could. This was mid-December.

First week of January came, and our install window was 11am to 3pm. The installer called ahead of time (as requested) and showed up promptly at 11 am. He was a great guy and did a great job. He was able to answer all of my technical questions, and clarify several concerns I had. (He was an employee of the original ILEC that WS bought in my area, and had better knowledge of how things actually worked in my area. The CSR on the phone was not local, so she didn't know how it worked here.) My install got a little hairy, as my house did not have a dedicated ethernet drop from the side of the house (ONT) to the patch panel upstairs. Fortunately, we were able to find a way to run a Cat5e line from the ONT to my patch panel on the second floor of my house, which was quite a long run. (Pro tip: if you ever build a house, or have the drywall open for a renovation, install a 2" conduit run in the wall from your basement / crawlspace up to your attic. It will make your wiring life much easier in the future, especially if you have two or more floors.) My home did not have a fiber drop, so the installer ran a new line from the pedestal up the street to the ONT on the side of my house. A burial crew will come out in a month or so to put it underground.

The ONT equipment installed was an Adtran Total Access 352. This unit is all you need for both internet and POTS service. It goes on the outside of your house, and includes a CyberPower UPS battery backup. You will need an outside GFCI outlet nearby. (Protip: installer said that if you ever lose service, the first thing you should do is check if the GFCI outlet tripped, as this will fix about 40% of the service calls.) There are two lines leaving the box, one is your POTS line to the phone jack in the house, and the other is your Cat5e line that gives you your internet. All you do is jut plug this line into the ethernet port of whatever you use for your internet service, wireless router / AP, desktop, notebook, homebrew linux server, whatever. (Although it should have a gigabit ethernet port if you want all the speed you are paying for.) This is important to note because a lot of the WS people will tell you that you need a "modem" in order to use the service, and will try to push an Arris NVG343 for $9.99 / month on you as the "modem". This is incorrect, as the NVG343 is nothing more than run-of-the-mill wireless router / ap, and is not needed to provide the gigabit ethernet service. I just refused it, and the tech took it back with him when he left. I called in the next day, and the CSR this time said they would remove the modem rental fee once the install tech finished the paperwork showing I refused the "modem". The install tech set up my landline, which I pretty much will never use. Initially, speed tests run on both my Ubuntu server (which acts as my router) and the tech's laptop showed speeds about half of what I expected, including results from WS's own internal speed test site. (speedtest.windstream.net) The tech suspected a provisioning error, and a phone call from him to WS support found that my service was not properly provisioned when it was set up. (The traffic shaper and QoS settings for my service we set too low.) After that was fixed, speed tests using my Ubuntu server started showing 940 down / 940 up, which is about 95% of advertised speed. (This is also the best speeds I've seen from Google Fiber speed tests.) All was set up and ready to go.

So far the service has been great. Ping times to Google's DNS server (8.8.8.8) are between 8ms (off peak) and 47ms (peak). Speed tests during peak hours range wildly between 200 to 600 down, which is to be expected at peak times. Surprisingly though the upload speeds have all been pretty consistently above 600, even during peak times. One thing to keep in mind is that most speed test sites are not optimized for gigabit service, so a lot of times the slow speeds are a result of the speed test server itself and not the connection. Off peak tests to sites that are optimized for gigabit (speedtest.googlefiber.net and dslreports.com/speedtest) consistently show over 90% of advertised speed. (Off peak for me is 3am. Yes, I ran the tests at 3am.)

Overall the install and service have been great. There was some disconnect between what the CSRs will tell you about the service, requirements, and hardware ("modem rental fee"), but I think most of this can be chalked up to the CSR not being familiar with how the local markets are actually set up and work from a technical standpoint. If your market is one that WS bought out, you should try to get in touch with an employee who used to work for the original carrier, as they will know what is really going on. One last thing, I cannot say enough how great our install technician was. He answered all of my questions, went out of his way to do the install the way I wanted it, spent extra time to diagnose some wiring issues I had with the phone jack, and did all of this with a five year old kid constantly asking him questions about what he was doing. He really did a great job.

Windstream fiber question

Do you still using Windstream 1Gbps fiber today? if so, how's it treat you? Any good reliable? Solid connection? My family might be considering to another new place called Lewisville, NC. I've checked over Windstream. It appeared that where 1Gbps fiber deployed there, but can't be sure if it's really available there. But again, is Windstream 1gbps fiber internet really worth having?

Spectrum is 200/10, 400/20, and 1000/35 in residential. Bad upload. I have WS in my area but the lines are bad, so we use Spectrum instead.

Had Windstream fiber for 3 years now. Service has been very reliable with consistent speeds. One exception to reliability is they were doing a network reconfiguration due to changes in local utilities (so not their choice), but service was basically non-existent for 4 days. Other than that outages have been minimal, so no complaints there. I really like that it's a pretty barebones service. Not a bunch of high margin junk added on. Easy to bridge their Actiontec modem/router so I get to use all my own equipment. Fiber all the way to the NID, so speeds are solid and reliable. I've had Comcast, AT&T Fiber in the past in this is my favorite ISP so far.

Good at less than 3kft from DSLAM or with FTTP/Cable, too bad I'm neither. DSLR tech support is awesome! No usage caps.
A decade+ behind the times, overpriced due to no fixed line competition. Stuck with unacceptable 25/1.5.
Beg someone for fiber! Too much for a nearly useless 1.5mb of upload. T-Mobile LTE/5G or Starlink is a much better option!

It's 25/1.5M Bonded ADSL2+, it works and was mostly reliable. It is just slow for streaming multiple devices, and a simple iCloud backup would bring it to its knees and make it cry and plead for mercy. 1.5mb upload is useless for anyone with security cameras, barely works for video conferencing, and you'd better pray no one tried to use bandwidth while you were doing so.

I finally got to say goodbye to Windstream thanks to T-Mobile's Home Internet for $25 a month less. Now I have more upload than I had download with Windstream, and I have 3-4x the download that I had.

I'd still much rather have a fixed fiber line, but unless I'm willing to spend more than a house payment a month for it plus what a car costs to build it out, I'm completely SOL.

Great on-line service from Prince

I wanted to relay the very positive experience I had in dealing with a switch from a previous internet server to Windstream. I made the switch on Sunday, Jan 24 and was having trouble receiving e-mail on Tuesday, Jan 26. Prince was the technician that took my call and although he had to walk me through several iterations to reinstall my modum, he was extremely courteous and helpful. It is so refreshing to find this type of exemplary customer service. He is to be commended.

least yours works

Try converting from a residential to a business and upgrading!! It took a month and every time you called they pass you around and hang up on you. They ran a new line and HOOKED IT UP WRONG. Had us on with someone else! Took calling the area supervisor (which in Concord NC was the only name in the dial by name directory, had to find the local phone # to reach it). To give credit where credit is due, most of the Techs in my area where a holdover from the company (Concord Telephone) Windstream bought (then exploited it) and they are very nice and are willing to help but the backend people always let them down, even they sit on hold for an hour to do something simple. It used to be 8 years ago, when you called for support, you got a local person who would make sure you got taken care of (because they could literally walk to the engineers desk).

Re: least yours works

That's an issue that seems to get worse the larger a company gets. 24-48 hours just to get an updated assignment on a fiber serving terminal. I could of physically moved it in minutes, but I didn't know where it was supposed to be moved so I couldn't do that until the records got officially updated. That's referring to the large ISP that I work for, not Windstream.

Re: least yours works

They came out to do mine on bonded the first time, only to discover the records were wrong and they didn't have enough pairs on their end. Then they come back again, sort it out and discover the pairs in our drop were bad at the pedestal and took 3 weeks to get a new line. They sent the tech out 3 times to finish the bonding before the line was installed...

Re: least yours works

Well the first time I was setup for an install no one even bothered to call me to say "we qualified you but our equipment isn't ready yet." So I know how you feel.

Re: least yours works

Hello and thank you for your post. We apologize you are having issues in the evening hours with your 100meg service.
Are you still having issues? If so, please post to the direct forums and I will be more than happy to look into this for you.

Inconsistent speed, pricey compared to what fiber clients from many providers pay.
It's either this or satellite or Comcast

Was recently auto upgraded from 25/0.7 to 50/1.8 although I never get 50 download.
Upload speed at 1.8 is really poor but at least it seems fairly consistent and it is close to advertised.

I now have a T3200, this is my second one, the first one failed.

The techs are very competent, and the support on the Windstream Dircect forum is top notch.
Every tech who has been out here have been professional, knowledgeable, and helpful.

Wish they would put FTTH out here, we have a lot of homes here in our subdivision, and many more close by.

Move to a new home and when looking for and ISP found that Windstream offered gigabit fiber. I had an horrible experience with Windstream DSL several years ago, but decided to give them another shot. Two months in and I couldn't be happier. Install was done on time at the beginning of the time window and was done quickly and neatly. Speeds are always just shy of the max of possible for TCP over a gigabit ethernet. Only one brief outage after a severe storm that downed trees and took out power and I was pleasantly surprised that I was back online before the power was restored.

That's my experience too!

Been happy until the past few weeks. Now, every evening the connection is horrible. Slow. Laggy.

Thinking of switching providers. Windstream has promised to check my service, but mostly thry make excuses and claim nobody else has called with problems.

Problem is usually between 7pm and midnight.
