I've had service for several years now, everytime they upgrade they promise more DL speed, never UL speed. I signed up for 6mb DL and still am waiting and using 1.5mb. They keep promising but they still haven't made good on anything. They provide a router a Speedstream 4200, no one installs it, they mail it to you with instructions (thankfully I know how to plug it in). Tech support is sketchy, best to call late nights and get someone who knows what is going on, but is not able to do anything about it. day time all you get is promises and the usual 'it's not their fault'. Tonight I was at dial up speeds and tech support wasn't able to do anything. Getting a tech to come out is impossible, I've requested one and they find some excuse around it. Maybe they don't have anyone that actually works in the field on their stuff.

DL & UL 12 hours later have gone from good back to worse, in between dial up and 1mb. It appears that at certain times of the day is when these problems arise. You don't suppose Windstream needs upgrades or something?

10-28-2009 The forum Tech Support is awesome! They were able to get things up and running, no problems. Thanks guys!

11-2011 Back to SSDD...called and asked about 12mb package for $5 and was told that my area it would cost $15/month more! Getting 1/3 DL speeds at best most of the time. Tech Support not being too responsive or committal. If I had any other options would change in a heartbeat.

01-2013 Same thing again....now 12 mb down is .70....if they can't keep up with cutomeers then offer them a refund

Windstream - poor choice

3-9-2013 same problems new chapter
have 12 mb and getting .06
Tier 2 Tech support on forums is no longer helpful, all they do is say the engineers are working on a solution then the upgrades are scheduled but not in near future.

Customer Service is DEPLORABLE, quality is DEPLORABLE. For the price of internet and phone of $90 ($72 for internet) you do not get anything close to what you pay for.

Updated : 9-26-12 It has been almost two years since I started having issues with the dsl Windstream. They refuse or don't know how to fix the problem, continue to sell service on a DSLam their own techs tell me are way overloaded already. They give you an every revolving 6 month time frame as to when it will be fixed that never happens. You either have to get on at 1-5am for your service to work anywhere close to what you pay for, at peak times you might as well just get off the computer and watch tv because your connection slows to a crawl with speeds of .15,.25,.45 out of 3.0. When you call and ask about the upgrades that were suppose to be in place to fix the speed/latency issue they have no idea what you are talking about. If you are stuck with this as your only broadband provider the best thing you can do is file a formal complaint with the BBB and the public service commission in your state. Windstream knows in a lot of rural areas they are the only provider and will treat you like crap once you are a customer, they will lie and tell you that you can stream videos and play games on the connection (which is true) if you get over half the speed you pay for.

7/30/12 Avoid this provider if at all cost, if you live in an area where they have no competition you will not get any upgrades or decent service. They are notorious for overselling their product. The techs will tell you they don't know why they are still selling DSL in your area when the DSLam is @ 98% capacity. You can expect to be lied to and when you complain about it only get 10.00 credit for your troubles. We were told February 2011 when we started getting constant sub .50mbps connection that they would have it fixed by June of 2011 at the latest, we called back in July the ETR was moved to Dec of 2011 and then to Jun 2012 and now Dec 2012. I was told by a tech yesterday don't expect them to spend any money on your DSLam. They have no competition where you are so they have no fear of losing you. DO NOT GET THIS SERVICE IF YOU CAN HELP IT!!

When we first got DSL years ago it was a blessing, able to finally play our online games, Netflix, Youtube and such. We had been seeing consistent speeds of 2.5+ 95% of the time (paying for 3.0). This is not the case now, repeated calls to tech support (we will send a tech out) 3-4 days pass nothing happens, still slow speeds. My upload is beating my download speeds. We call back, tech support has no record of us calling or them telling us they would send someone out.

Rinse and repeat for basically the last 2-3 months, can't stream movies half the time, don't even think about playing an online game that requires quick response time. My 3G phone seems to be faster most of the time than my dsl. If you want to watch a youtube video hit play then pause it and walk away for awhile. 40 dollars of my 80 dollar phone bill is for the dsl, I am not even receiving half the speed I am paying for. When we could get 1.5 it seemed faster than the 3.0 we have now.

It is basically a crap shoot on what kind of internet you will have when you sit down at the computer now. I just go ahead and reset the router, modem and pc before I try to do anything. We use to be able to XBOX it play wow and stream a movie without a problem now you are lucky if you could do any of the one at a time.

It is now the 3rd of Feb and 3 days past my last ETR, my connection is still crap at non peak and peak times. I am just waiting for my "new" ETR since this one came and went.

Dont get your internet here!!!! We had 3mb and it kept dropping day after day time after time again. We called and they said we could go to 12mb for same price so we tried it but it took 2 weeks to get everything even close to working right. First they never switched us from the old PINS in the phone system to run high speed thats why we kept dropping on the 3mb so if you have problems the prob have you on the old out dated CISCO PINS which is what they have to change in their office in your own area. Long story short you do not get what they are charging you for. We had download speed over 12mb the first day then after that it dropped on speed tests to 1.14mb - 3.13mb the very next day. They tell you its great for gaming but no matter if you have 3mb or 12mb the upload is a max between 0.60 - 0.70mb and gaming needs 1.0mb - 1.5mb upload. If you already have their service I think I would ask for more off my bill every month since your never getting what you pay for. We called and all they could say is we have latency issues in that area and that means they do not have enough fiber optics ran here to support the internet the sold to everyone so we just have to wait til they run more and its winter now so I know it will be a while if they even sink the money into getting us what we are paying for. I will be going to cable in the next few days, we already set an appt up during the time we were having so much trouble with Windstream in the first place.

We currently have a 6Mbps connection(7200kbps) and pay $68.87/m after
"taxes and fees" with 24 month contract. I thought AT&T DSL service was
horrible, but they are google fiber compared to this horrible company. We
are now going on a full month of no internet service. It is slower than
dial up an as a result all web pages time out before ever loading. Between
my online store and college online courses I have been forced to spend a
lot of money on tethering to my mobile phone.

We called and asked if we could have a price cut on this months bill since
it's so broken. They were happy to oblige and took $14 off the bill said
the rest of the bill was all telecommunications fees and tax and they
couldn't do anything about it. Apparently they have the worst tax rates on
the planet. Unsatisfied with this outcome we called 3 times and every rep
said the exact same thing. They are the only show in town. It appears they
do this across the country. Obviously a purposeful strategic move on their
part. They are so bad we are actually looking into new properties near a
city with multiple internet options. If you can avoid this company, choose
another option.

In The Same Boat

I live on Hwy 6, 3 miles from Iredell and about 6 from Hico. Ever since the rainstorm that came through right around New Years I started having the evening slow speed issue.

Had this service for nearly 4 years and it has always been fine. Support is useless, and there are no other options as you are aware. I've been putting together piles of speed tests, ping tests, diagnostics in the hope that if I ever get anyone knowledgeable to talk to, I can make the case. Honestly though, they know what the issue is and they are lying about it. Not sure what we can do about it though.

I have windstream DSL.

Sometimes it is OK, and sometimes it is sloooooooow! At night it will
slow down to .41 mbps.

I have no idea why it slows down so much, but this is unacceptable!

Unfortunately I have no other options for DSL. I have really slow speeds at night. They promised they'd call when it was fixed (within 48 hours they promised), but never did. I posted here on Windstream Direct and got a response that it was fixed, but it wasn't fixed at all. Had a similar experience a few months ago with outages. They'd tell me they were sending someone out but didn't do so until days later. I kept calling and they basically kept lying to me and would never call back when they said they would.

INTRO

We've been (unhappily) using Windstream here in GA for a little over a year, as they are currently the only DSL provider out in our area. Unfortunately, the company seems to want to take advantage of this situation and charge premium DSL prices without the resources to even support their speed claims.

CONNECTIVITY

On paper, we're subscribed to the "fastest" connection they offer in the area, which is supposedly 3mbps down/768kbps up. In reality, we're on a congested, unstable network that nominally stays around 0.5mbps/0.3mbps, with pings ranging anywhere between 400ms-800ms. The max I've seen our speeds hit were around 1.5mbps down, which is still 1/2 of the advertised rate. Also, this was at 4am in the morning when most likely less than 25% of their subscribers are even on the network! Upon doing a traceroute, i've come to the conclusion that the latency is coming from hops to Windstreams servers. There is absolutely no reason why we should be receiving such slow & sporadic internet connectivity, as our SNR is around 28, and Atten. around 37.

Being a prior IT director, my educated guess would be that Windstream is overselling the amount of connections their current infrastructure can even handle. Instead of upgrading their technology to accommodate for the increase of subscribers, it seems that they'd much rather spend that money on their marketing budget to increase revenue. What they don't understand is that an internet company is nothing without a stable connection to sell. Yes, there will always be issues in certain vicinities with any carrier, however just take a look at the reviews under Windstream. Enough said.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

I've spoken with Windstream's customer support on numerous occasions in attempts to resolve the sporadic & slow connectivity, however I've given up as their solutions seem to always be "compensation" rather than fixing the problem at hand. I don't want a discounted price for my internet. I subscribed for DSL so that I could USE THE INTERNET. Imagine that. Furthermore, their support team (for residential) is absolute garbage. Their "solution" for everything is to rebuild the connection, and to get you to reboot your modem. Either that, or blaming my hardware for the slow connections. Sorry to burst your bubble Windstream, but the latency jumps from 1ms to 700ms at the first hop to your own servers. Not everyone who subscribes to your services is completely naive to how internet connectivity works. It seems that every time I call Windstream, they have a different excuse as to why the connection is so slow. The last time I called, a rep told me that they were "working in our area" to upgrade their infrastructure. This is after being told a week prior that everything looked fine in our area, and that there should be no reason why the connection should be so sporadic. If you're going to play the BS card, at least get your reps on the same page.

OVERALL

All in all, there really isn't much to say about Windstream other than the fact that they are the epitomy of piss poor service. Although I wish that I could think of something positive to say about the company, there really isn't anything that comes to mind. I'd even go as far as claiming that the company is a fraud for false advertising. Who wouldn't when they are receiving 10% of the advertised internet speeds? I'm not asking for perfect service, just one that WORKS. At this point, I'd even be happy with HALF of the claimed speeds as long as the connection was stable. Overall, it's best that you stay as far away from Windstream as possible. We'll be canceling our service with them soon, as I found out that Sprint offers mobile internet service in our area which may not be the fastest, but at least it won't cut out every 5 minutes due to an overcrowded network. I wouldn't touch Windstream with a 10 foot pole after seeing how worthless their service has been. They don't seem to understand that a contract goes both ways. The customer agrees to pay for a service at a specific rate, while the provider PROVIDES the advertised service. Why is it that when a customer decides to ignore the contract and cancel, they want to charge termination fees and penalize them to the fullest extent, however when they can't deliver the advertised services its considered ok? There's no other way to put it other than complete garbage, both their ethics and services. Maybe I'll be convinced later on that they've changed, however they've got MILLIONS of dollars worth of infrastructure costs and customer rep training that they need to undergo prior to worthy of even being called an ISP. As of now, they are just a SP and a horrible one at that. Stop scamming subscribers and providing a service that would be considered junk even in a third world country.

Windstream is awful

Same problems here (Douglas GA). First started having severe issues in July 2012.

"Fix" date was to be October 2012... then April 2013... now it's July 2013, MAYBE.

Windstream had done nothing but lie and apologize. I've filed complaints with the BBB, FCC, etc. Nothing helps, but I've sure made 'em mad with my complaints. They recently told me to find another provider. I would if I had a choice that was better!

To everyone reading this:

Do not even think of signing up for Windstream. They are the worst company I have ever dealt with in over 30 years of adult life. They are scum who take advantage of customers in rural areas or small towns. They oversubscribe an area, and keep on advertising and adding even more customers... none of whom they can provide reliable service or advertised speeds to.

Update 01-29-13: Well now I have no internet thanks to a change happy tech who changed a setting in the DSLAM that now prevents my modem from authenticating via PPPoA, all I asked in the direct forum was for an update to with the peak time slow speeds would be fixed, instead a tech is dispatched for no reason and another tech makes an unneeded change on the DSLAM that kills my connection, and of course it happened when I'm out of town for 2 weeks so I can't reconfigure my modem and my parents or with out internet.

Just stay away from this 3 ring circus.

Update 01-03-13: Still having peek time congestion (5pm - 12am (or later) 12 Mbps line getting 2.5 to 3Mbps during these times, Multiple downloads from multiple locations at the same time yields to total of 2.5 to 3 Mbps so its not the source, tech support cant help (These forums or Phone) its just out of their hands.

If you have any other choice take it.

Update 06-28-12: Well having peek time congestion issue again, supposedly my DSLAM is fine and they were looking at other equipment but they have now gone silent and I'm still left with a 3Meg line at peek times.

Update 04-07-12: Getting 13.21Mbps Down and .60 Mbps Up on m "12meg" Line »www.speedtest.net/result/1881552031.png no problems.

Update 02-11-11: »www.speedtest.net/result/1153596779.png

Update 01-16-11: Still getting full speed with no issues at all.

Update 07-11-09: Just adding this speedtest,
»www.speedtest.net/result/515275401.png

Current setup is a D-Link DSL-2540B (synced at 14973/766, 20012/800max, SNR 14.9/13.5, Attn 22.5/8.8, Interleaved depth 1/1 Delay 0/0msec) Running PPPoA giving the public IP (via DHCP, "PPP IP extension") to a WRTSL54GS running Tomato 1.25 with QOS off for the speed test, Test was run a Windows 7 x64 Build 7100 with Wired 10/100.

Update 05-23-09: Really nothing to report service is still great. We did have a storm roll though one night and a tree took out phone lines and power for probably about 40 houses, but Windstream had a repair crew out the next day at about 8am working straight till about 8pm working on restringing and splicing cables and service is still great.

Update 08-09-08: We have 12meg ADSL2+ Greenstreak service ($50 a mounth) )now provisioned at 14973kbps Down and 766kbps up and have very very very stable service low pings 20ms - 40ms to the east coast and 80ms - 100ms to the west, with a limited use phone line (Greenstreak) free inbound calling 10c/min outbound to local and long distance with free 800 number outbound. We are currently useing VOIP as our primary phone but thanks to greenstreak I have the Linksys SPA3102 connected to the windstream phoneline providing lifeline service to 911 even when the power is out.

Update 10-31-07: We have 6Meg for about 9 months now and it's Trained at 7.2Meg so i get the 6Megs, good ping about 40-50ms to the east cost west coast is about 100ms minimum.Just wish i could get more upload stuck at 386Kbit.

08-??-05 We ordered 3/386 and been getting it every speed test i do.

Other then that Tech support in Very friendly not the most knowledgeable but they do their best.

And the People before us already had DSL so when we received the Modem (which was before we were even moved in) i plugged it up and it sycnd the first time.

BAD SERVICE

I have been with wind stream for a few years now and have nothing but problems. I never have service when I need it and just found out that all the people in my community are sharing the same Internet line do to not having the updated equipment need to provide my home with the service I pay for. They advertise High Speed but I seem to have dial up. I have been calling in every month for the past 8-10 months and they just keep giving a $10 discount. For those that wish to stay with windstream, ask them about the $29.99 monthly Internet service. I only wish I had other companies to chose from in my area. It is a shame that they are the only providers in my area. Thanks for all the bad service and daily headaches when I need to get something done.

I have been testing my internet connection speed and I am lucky to

get a test result above 1.5 mbps in the last three weeks and I am being

charged for service speeds of up to up to 12.mbps and a 5.00 extra

charge is on my bill to receive the best speed possible ? I called for

support and was told over the phone by a Windstream customer care person

that the are working on a low speed problem in my area and he said that

there is no projected date of completion of repairs at this time. Prior to this happening I was paying 83.40 a month for “3M PRICE FOR LIFE” I was browsing there website and I see the add “UP TO 12M PRICE FOR LIFE $59.00” that’s pretty bad service and as you can see there agreement bellow says it all!! Windstream hasn’t lived up to its advertising. Connections are lost/dropped too often and speeds are more often ¼ of the advertised 3mb speeds. I would expect at least 1.5 mb for the “Up To” 3mb connection im paying for. The speed and reliability has only gotten worse in the last couple years. I’ve verified there are no issues in my homes wiring and the issues are due to Windstreams outdated equipment and lines. Customer service has admitted that there are issues in our area. That would be ok if the issues were resolved at some point but there seems to be no end to the abuse this company is inflicting on its customers.
