Alltel has been a nightmare. DSL was supposed to be a Christmas present for December 1999. Some present. I was forced to buy the Cisco 677 router for hundreds of dollars from the only dealer in town. After a month of missing work to be home for the "installation" so I could call them during business hours and be in front of the PC to make any changes, it was finally up and running-at about 15k/second. On rare occasions over the last year I have seen downloads approach 25k. However, speed has fluctuated wildly, and more often than not will be in the range of a 56k modem. Over the last week, my benchmarks at dslreports.com have dropped well below modem speeds. Oh, did I mention that because I got in early (lucky me), I'm paying $65 a month for the ISP service (from Alltel naturally, my only choice at the time) and for the DSL line?
Half a dozen Alltel techs have been to my house and tested various configurations on my fast, new computer, as well as the line. They all leave scratching their heads and muttering. "I don't understand why your connection is so slow ! It shouldn't be like this!" I have tried emailing their online support, and have called multiple support hotlines without success. Sometimes the Internet is unavailable for days at a time. Sometimes it is extremely slow. In either case, I have learned that Alltel is unable or unwilling to fix it so I simply accept my situation. The sad thing is that I was willing to keep forking over $65/month to get 12-15k speeds for most of the last year. Hey it's still faster than dial-up. All my friends in the Houston area pay less and got a free ADSL modem AND enjoy much faster speeds-the beauty of competition. This latest slow down is the last straw. I need the Internet to perform basic functions of my job. Unless Alltel can fix this within 48 hours, I will drop them as soon as I can convince my wife to do so, we will get our DSL line changed to a second phone line and sign up with a $10/month local ISP. My 56k modem is faster than this.

Alltell is the only provider in Sugar Land, TX and they know you cannot go else where. I have spoken with PDQ about their plans of having access out here (thru COVAD) and have been in contact with technicians from COVAD. They stated that Alltel was not willing to let them into this market (big surprise) because of the higher requirements set by COVAD for advertised line speeds. Many reports, (some of which can be found in my online diary) pointed to the fact that there is a bottleneck with my ISP's (Alltel.net) backbone connection. When questioned about this, I was told that there were problems in Florida and Georgia with conjestion, and I might be experinceing the same problems here in Sugar Land. They say they will contact me when this is verified or rebunked.. Chances of me hearing from them without ME calling back.. 10%

UPDATE Feb 9, 2001: The mail server reliability could be better. There are short down times at least one day a week, and on that day, it's spotty uptime. Up one minutes, down the next, up, down, etc. Real yoyo stuff. Afterseveral months, I expected it to get better, but it's not. It never loses mails, but it's a pain in the butt.
Original review:
I'm a Pennsylvania customer. Alltel started offering ADSL service in September. I ordered it October 5 and was online October 10. I specifically waited this long before making any comments. I'm very impressed with the service. My service is 768/160. Yes, 160 upstream. During the day, mid day especially, the service slows down some, but I almost never see downstream below 300 Kbps. My upstream is almost never less than full speed. And in the early evening, it's about 500Kbps, and all night, full speed is no problem.Talking with the service tech during the single outage I experienced, It was down from about midnight to 3 or 4 am for system upgrades, and when
it came back up later, there was a slightly noticable increase in daytime speed. Around here they are having some bandwidth problems, but they are upgrading.
I don't like the fact that the news server drops some posts, but I've registered a complaint, and they claim it's part of the upgrade plan.
Basic summary:
My service is 768K/160K, with excellent throughput. Even though the day is a bit slower at day, it's still possible to get near full speed during the day if the server keeps pushing the bits fast.
The DSL service costs $29,95 a month, and ISP service is $19,95. I the first month free without signing the contract to decide as well.
There is another ISP who offers service for the same price, but they require you either pay via credit card, or if you want to pay in cash, you have to pay 1 year up front. I was already a dialup customer of their for a year when I started to apply to ADSL, and was told that even though I was a customer, they STILL wanted a year up front. Alltel made no such requests.
I received a Cisco 677 router with ALL documentation (including CDROM versions), 3 in-line Microfilters, one wall mount with built-in Microfilter, power adapter, one 9 pin serial to RJ45 router management cable (6 foot), one crossover Ethernet cable (to go from the router directly to a network card, 6 foot), 1 high quality telephone cable (14 foot), set-up guide for the Alltel service, setup disk to program the DSL router (which worked perfectly).
The router costs $99 if you sign a one year contract, or is free with a 2 year contract. You own the router, as opposed to an additional lease cost, and the warranty is carried by Alltel, so you canget a replacement quickly and easily. I asked if they could break up the $99 fee over several months on my phone bill, and they did so with zero fuss. They were very accomodating.
Tech supportis top notch. I had a problem back inthe beginning where the router's NAT wasn't passing requests on port 113 (IDENT service) to my machine. In less than a minute they told me how to add an entry for it. (Now that I've played with the router's OS more, I'm much more familiar with it, but still, they were very helpful).
Some ISPs don't like the idea of having you set up multiple PCs on one connection, and would like to charge you more. Alltel not only doesn't mind, but tells exactly how to do it, and offers a total of 5 email addresses with the basic ISP fee for just such an circumstance.
The IP is dynamic, but only seems to reassign if you get disconnected for some reason, like a reboot or your power goes out. Rarely the line drops for a moment, causing a disconnect and reconnect from their end. I don't mind, you might. Other ISPs may have static IPs if you like.
Over all, I like it. Excellent service. I recommend it. The price is average, totally average. I'd like to see it lower, but since I used to have a second line dedicated to my modem, this is only about ten bucks more a month that having two lines.

I have dual line ISDN because DSL isnt available to my house nor is cable. There is a particular router that I have to go through that does not belong to Alltel but you would think they could put some pressure on them to get the problem fixed. I have only had ISDN for a week now and Im already irritated beyond belief that every nite its the same router thats the problem and how I get the "we cant do anything about it BS from Alltel. I have 3 other friends who have DSL from Altell and they also have the same problem because the go through the same router. One friend has had his DSL for 2 months and has been repeatedly been calling since it was installed. Here is a typical ping plotter log. Target Name: rdu88-251-181.nc.rr.com IP: 24.88.251.181

If you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. I mostly do online gameing and was wondering is there any other service like satelite that has both up and down capabilities? Ive read some of the reviews and see aloy of unsatisfied customers using this service also. Thanks for your time in reading my complaint. CJ

Attempted to order in June/00. Run-Around until November. Installed 2 days before Thanksgiving. Initial speed and setup were fairly straightforward
even though I reveived nothing more than a box with a cisco678 a few filters and a windows setup program. No Microsoft products in use here.
After about 2-3 weeks very slow connections. After a few days I did open an inquiry on their website as to why my ip didn't reverse lookup/resolve to a name. Their reply was hilarious. "The reason you do not resolve/reverse to a name is because you have a dynamic ip." My response to that tid-bit was " I have a dynamic ip on many dialup accounts and they all reverse/resolve to a name, this isn't much different. When is it going to be fixed?"
I expect things to slowly improve in the next couple months. I did finally get my speed back to acceptable levels after many converstaions via e-mail and phone support. They went the typical route by telling me the problem was my setup and my local network etc.etc, ad infinitum. I repeatedly told them the problem was either the dslam or the other side of it and rolling a truck to my premise was useless. After 2_ truck rolls to my premise they finally got the message. They moved another user off an adjacent port on the dslam and my speed problems were fixed. Alltel also had some other problems they were even more reluctant to admit.
At least for now thing's are ok. They could be better. the price is $49.95 + local service ($12) , 2 year contract 1538k down/288k up. They have along way to go.. I wish they would tell you that up front and really listen when you try to help them.

Ordered and installed in two weeks. Signed two year lease and received Cisco 678 router free. No downtime so far after two months. Using dynamic IP and NAT on the Cisco. Received extra micro-filters at no charge. Average around 650K 24/7. Overall, 100% satisfied.

this is what i get from alltel in newark ohio Your download speed : 187033 bps, or 187 kbps. Browsers would show : about a 22.8 k/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 242424 bps, or 242 kbps and they call it adsl? whats up with that? here there answer DSL speeds as listed in the contract are the maximum possible speeds on the particular tier of ADSL that you are using within the local loop, and are not guaranteed. Losses in performance can result from the particular site that you are attempting to download from, amount of users online, quality of connections to the remote site to the backbone and associated equipment, as well as other problems that can occur.

Hi I am with alltel for dsl I was one of the first in area to get it. When I first got it, it was the worst service ive ever seen. Now a few months later it has gotten better my speed tests started out at 350down\127up when im paying for 768\128. Now it at 595down\130up which is alot better.
But right after I got dsl a bunch of my friends went on the waiting list... now about 5 months later they're still on the list. Alltel clames they are out of modems.. I think they can get modems in 5months, don't you?
Now I know your thinking why dont you go with some other isp...because this is the only highspeed isp we got as of right now. Roadrunner should be here soon I might just give that a try ...because other people in my neighborhood with alltel dsl are going alot faster... Alltel claims my phone lines in my part in the neighborhood are older and this is why I go slower... I think they should bump me up to 1.5\128 so i get the speed im paying for (768\128) so I actually go fast...595 down is not bad...but that prob. the best im ever going to get....
If I could pick another isp... I would because I think they can get better then this.
later,
Ace
