The Good: They really know how to apologize. They obviously have experience.
The Bad: I have had DSL with Windstream since 2007, and at first I was quite happy with the service. About a year ago, we got a call from Windstream stating that they were willing to upgrade us from our 6Mbps plan to 12Mbps for only $5 a month more, and ever since it seems to have a severe case of narcolepsy. Most days I'm lucky to get a consistent 3Mbps, and sometimes it's 1Mbps with latency issues. I can't establish a reliable VPN connection to work with this, and streaming any video longer than about 20 seconds is near maddening. I wish that speedtest.net would log all of the times that the test won't even start due to latency errors.
If you decide to call support, a Windstream rep will be more than happy to placate you with apologies. I logged a ticket for slow connection speed, and about a month later I finally got a call back stating that they had located the problem and I should call if it persists. Well, nothing changed and I called them back.
11/18/11 - Speeds have improved but are still not consistent especially in the afternoon/evening time frame. I still stand by my original review until I can get proven reliable service.
12/11/11 - I'm back to getting service at less than 1Mbps on a 12mbps connection!
12/12/11 - Speeds are back to what I had from 11/18/11.
1/29/2012 - Speedtest shows 12Mbps, fairly regularly now, however I continue to be plagued with dropped connections. I tried to VPN into work tonight and after the 4th time that my VPN connection crashed in 20 minutes, I went to another location (which has a 5Mbps Time Warner connection, and I spent the next hour and a half on the VPN connection, with no loss of connection...Imagine that. I just need to convince my spouse that we can lose the bundle and stay with Dish network (no problems there) and ditch the DSL and phone, and go with Roadrunner. I just wish Apple hadn't bungled the OS6 maps so my wife would be finally driven to absolute sanity by repeated attempts at updating the OS with this connection, and beg for us to get a real internet provider. 5Mbps RR account is so much better than the narcoleptic "12 Mbps" DSL that ends up being anywhere from 0.8Mbps to about 7Mbps. I jumped on the one price for life promo, but I'm not really looking forward to paying for crap for the rest of my life.
The Ugly: 2/1/12 - Speedtest.net = 0.88Mbps. Windstream strikes out again.
8/24/2012 2300 »www.speedtest.net/result/2138985546.png
9/27/2012 I'm finally getting 12Mbps pretty regularly as originally promised. No rebates, no refunds, nothing.
10/4/2012 Back to square 1 again, with bursts of speed interrupted by spans of vast black holes in their service. See 0.8Mbps result in the replies below.
1/20/2013 There must have been a perfect storm of federal money being made available and a fire being lit under someone's butt because I finally seem to be getting the 12Mbps that had been promised for years. I just hope it lasts.
1/22/2013 It looks like things are holding up now. For the sake of those who are still suffering with slow speeds, I will update my rating with the same voracity and tenacity that was applied to correcting the speed issues. That said, Windstream should check back in about 6 months, it should be a positive rating by then. (Everyone else... I might get to it by about 2017...shhh!!!)

sgt @windstream.net | isp failure I would like to know what is wrong with Windstream Nation Wide. Why have the lines all become so congested so that no one has any consistent speeds, and are always dropping. My service only works early in the morning. I was told that Windstream oversold in my area, causing bottle necks and serious slows. I have also been told for months that it is being looked into, but I dont think it is since it is still not fixed. What is the deal behind all of this. | Speedtest up or down. Sept 2012 - Right now my speed test results are either right at or around 12Mbps on about 10% of the tests that I run. The other 90% start out looking to be 11-12Mbps, but then stop and never finish, which seems typical of my connection as of late. It's like being on I-88 west out of Chicago with a toll booth every 10 miles. Go...go...stop...wait...go...stop...wait...go...stop...etc... The speed test app on the Ipod consistently shows about 2-3Mbps.

| Distance? Just a guess - you may be at a distance from the Auburn telephone switching office or DSLAM where 12 Mbps is possible, but fringe. The connection will drop frequently when that's the case, and then the modem and/or DSLAM port may reduce the attempted connection speed to try to get a more stable connection. I had this happen with CenturyLink in Omaha and lowering by one tier made all the difference. | |

For over a YEAR windstream has been aware that they oversold in my area. I was under the impression it was just my area as I am in a rural neighborhood. But after looking at the other reviews on here it seems their business model is to go into markets with no competition and sell sell sell until the equipment can't handle the traffic anymore and then ignore their customers complaints since they have no alternative to switch too. And since most people in rural communities are not used to broadband internet, they just assume that's how it works.
I was told they had a scheduled date to fix this issue in august 2012, then December, then January, then they told me June 2013, and the very last time i contacted them they told me they didn't have a fix scheduled anymore and they didn't know when or if it would happen.
Oversold areas and overworked DSLAMS seem to be the common complaint with windstream on this site. Don't go with them unless they are your only option, otherwise you will probably end up switching due to lack of speed during peak hours. I pay for 12 and get between 2-9 during the day and between 0.2 - 0.7 from 6-midnight EVERY NIGHT and pretty much all weekend.

| Sounds about right! Get used to it. This is Windstreams business model, by reading these threads that becomes painfully apparent. They have the same tactic for every single consumer experiencing the same exact issue. They have no plans to fix yours, if they've told you, they're lying. Just get used to that from these guys. They're from Arkansas, and apparently rednecks have no place running a business.
One thing I find peculiar is that in my particular case SOMETIMES they tell me that they do not have the equipment to fix the issue in my area. What the hell is that? Why kind of company doesn't have the equipment to fix their own equipment? That makes absolutely no sense to me.

Windstream has been the most terrible experience that I have EVER had with an ISP PERIOD! We've been having latency issues for the past 6 months or longer. They had no intention of reporting the latency outage, instead I had to repeatedly call tech support, finally they send a tech to my home. He relies on my suggestion that the central location is being over utilized, leaves and formulates his conclusion "It's over utilized".
I repeatedly call about the issue, after 3 months of hounding them religiously they decided to give a timeline for it's resolution, which was to be December 31st of 2012, that day came and went with no resolution. I call back, they give me a date in January, that day also comes and goes without rectifying the situation. I call once again, the techs on the telephone laugh at me as I speak to them, claim the technicians do not have the "equipment" to provide a fix.(UH WHAT?) Delay it until June 30th, obviously just to get me off of their back. I'm also getting the same old excuse that everyone else on this board is getting "We're upgrading to fiber in your area". The alleged upgrade is taking place 15 miles away from my home, which is the only place you will see Windstream vehicles, as I see it 15 miles away my home has nothing to do with my area, where you will never see a Windstream truck.
Everyone at Windstream is aware of the issue, and downright refuses to fix it. The techs laugh at you, mock you and lie to you. After further investigation on these boards it appears that this is the business model that Windstream has set up for it's self, and plans to incorporate throughout their daily dealings because as they see it we, the consumers cannot do anything about it and so far that remains to be the case. However, I have been seriously contemplating contacting a lawyer and taking them to small claims court, or contacting the department of consumer affairs and having them get involved.
I'm a Nursing student in college and have tons of homework to be done online. Some of that homework counts towards our "Clinical time", you do not submit the homework and you are counted absent, once 3 absences have occurred you are then kicked out of the program. So far, Windstream has caused me 2 absences. I'm in my final semester, and would be extremely angry and DEFINITELY contact a lawyer over another absence. When you tell the techs this they laugh, when you call corporate they do nothing but provide empathy and claim they will do something.
This is the most atrocious business I have ever encountered in my years of living. Hands down, Windstream takes the cake. I could provide a better business model with a simple evacuation of my bowels than the collective brain at Windstream. Most times my Internet is under dial up speeds. They guarantee at least half of the speed you pay for, I pay for 3.0 mbps, I get less than 0.24 mbps on a good day. Most days speed testing sites wont even load. "Configuration load failed". F*CK this, F*CK windstream. I'd rather drown in my own vomit than continue their service.

After 3 days of barely working, today it's what it should be.
I've had the runaround with them myself. Been working from "home" for 3 days and monitoring, have to juggle what I do around how well it works on any given day.
Good luck with nursing school, it will be well worth it, my wife is a clinician and "signs off" on patients etc., often from home, or checking records etc while "on call". We need this to work.
If this wasn't a rural area I'd have switched long ago and part of me wishes sit would just stop working altogether and then I'd have to try alternatives.
A couple of hours later;

| Re: Maddening I wish I could have switched along time ago. They were great for a couple of years, and of course like everyone elses story they gradually turd into a pile of garbage and neglect their consumers.
When they sell you the Internet they make you believe you're getting sortve speed guarantee. They claim to guarantee that you get half of the speed you pay for, well.. When you call the corporate office to lodge your complaint exclaiming you're supposed to be getting half according to the sales representatives, they then tell you "Well, our Internet is not regulated, so that's not true".
Okay, so you're falsely advertising on PURPOSE? Then when an issue arises you have no response to rectify the situation. Their business model is disgusting and I hope it winds up biting them in the ass one day. A bankrupt Windstream would appease me, subsequently, a sued Windstream would be even better. I've contemplated getting a lawyer, but I feel it's a waste of time.

Contracted for 6m down, .5 up. Seems to handle that during the day most times. Problem is we're not home when it's good. About 10 days or so ago, beginning around 6PM ish, service has gone to unusable. Up is usually on target, down runs from below dialup to maybe 1m. Not sure if we have other alternatives here as I don't think SBC services this community with DSL. Have complained repeatedly to CS. Reps are always nice BTW. Answer we got last night was "our servers are just overloaded." As a network manger with 3000 customers and 90m to take care of, I just call BS. The problem seems to be local to us and since it's time dependent I imagine it's an overworked DSLAM. We were promised a support person yesterday between 12 and 5 - no one showed or called. Have Dish Network in the house, may have to look at them.

Windstream is a monopoly in my area and can pretty much charge what they want for service apparently.. They are considerably higher rates than other competition for the same service. Over all very satisfied. Only issue was that I ordered the 12mb package or was sold the 12mb package and by the time the order was given to the install tech it was changed to 3mb as the order office had our address listed as not capable of 12mb. The install tech told me 12mb was available so I contacted AaronF a Windstream tech on this site and he was able to resolve the situation. Should have 12mb service today.
As of today 01/2013 speeds and latency are never close to the 12mb service. Latency is unbareable after 5pm everday. Most the times during the day too. If I had another option, I would definitely switch. Hoping the tech team here can shed some light on things for me. At least they are good at responding here.

Windstream as a whole has some serious issues. Taking into account my experience with getting my issue resolved and the others posting on this forum regarding their troubles most of these problems can only be cured by a major upgrade to the system network. Simply stated Windstream is in the ISP business to do one thing and that is to make money and in doing so their network is not capable of handling the traffic that's on it.
I can't speak for every market but it's likely they oversold most of the DSLAMS out there which results in the speed and latency issues many are reporting. It took almost a year to correct my issue (speed issue and packet loss) and they had to install upgrades into the DSLAM and fix the network backbone servers which caused my loss and the local DSLAM was 80% oversold.
Story can be found here »What can you do?
Customer service is pretty much useless so all contact should go to TIER II or higher if you want your issues addressed. Technical knowledge varies on who you talk to as some are knowledgeable but many are not. In closing I would avoid Windstream if you have another choice in your area, but if you live in a rural area you may not have a choice. Currently I'm on the 12MB package at $56.78 per month and less then 1000 feet from the local DSLAM in the western PA market.

| Windstream is simply Terrible I was going to write my own review but I agree with all that Microbell posted. When I started out in 2005 with ALLTEL it was rock solid for years. Currently their max here in northeast GA 6mb service $50 a month. Often it's simply barely usable, except for web surfing and Netflix streaming, almost can't handle Vonage.
This can last days. I started out myself on tech support with a Chicago cable company. This is a little vacation cabin we have, if this was at home in Atlanta we could not tolerate it.
Ive tried the gamut of tech support, they know there is a problem but cannot or will not fix it. Some answers they give are gibberish, and in the end well you are lucky to have internet. They could find nothing wrong in our place, Duh! While it worked flawlessly for years under ALLTEL, all that changed was the company. But they can see it running at dial up speeds for days; other times 6mb for a little while.
I guess Ill have to invest time and effort and vacation days in getting someone else, if thats possible, they actually laughed and said it isn't, well of course they'd say that. Of course reluctant to switch as while not good it meets very basic requirements and we have the alarm system via the phone line. But at this point years of terrible service I may even see what options there are for switching monitored alarm systems to an alternate method etc.,
