Completely overpriced for the service they deliver. Marketing will tell you that switching to one of their bundles (3MB line with phone STARTS at 59.99 USD!) will save you money. Don't believe a word they say as you will be paying 4 times the amount for International calls (yes, this is the "discount").
Bottom line? If you can get another service provider, do so and don't look back!

| International LD isn't free I take it you didn't realize that "Unlimited Long Distance" means domestic long distance only? Otherwise, $60/month for 3/768 DSL, Long Distance, and all calling features is a good deal. Are you having problems with your internet also, or is the rant just about the International long distance? | |

| Re: International LD isn't free quote: I take it you didn't realize that "Unlimited Long Distance" means domestic long distance only?...
Hi Icon, It is not that this was a mystery as I also have an international calling plan which is expected to have charges. The issue was that marketing presented a different "description" of what the bundle was supposed to cost.
Before the change to the Internet/phone bundle I had separate DSL and local land line service from Windstream with long distance provided by Sprint. This was costing (minus the Sprint LD service) ~$94/month without any long distance phone charges.
When cold called by marketing, I was pitched a bundle of internet and phone (local & Long distance services) for ~$60/month with unlimited LD in the US. This is a great deal I said to myself as I had the potential of seeing a large discount on what I have been paying for several years now.
Note: I fully expected that international calls would be an additional charge as well as the taxes for those calls plus the usual international cell phone connection fees (when appropriate).
When I got my bill this month, I was surprised to see that my actual bill had increased marginally rather than seeing the substantial savings I was anticipating due to the inclusion of fees and service charges that the marketeer had intimated were included in the $59.95 bundle price.
quote: ...Are you having problems with your internet also...?
The internet service has been solid without too many interruptions and I have always been satisfied with the physical service itself; where I have had issues overall is with the excessive cost of that service as compared to other areas in the Windstream network.
quote: ...or is the rant just about the International long distance?
There is no rant to what I wrote other than the fact that the service has always been overpriced for the speed available. The problem this review cycle is that I feel I was mislead by the marketing department. Whether this was due to lack of proper training for the marketeers or on purpose by omission is irrelevant as it still leads to a dissatisfied, long-term customer.

When you mention four times the amount for international calls I compared the rates for Windstream against TimeWarner cable (for the NC area) and found them to be very competitive. You can make this same analysis with the rate plans listed below, both of which can be found from the respective companies websites.
We do not require that you use Windstream for International calls. If there is anything we can do to assist you please let us know.

quote: ...When you mention four times the amount for international calls I compared the rates for Windstream against TimeWarner cable (for the NC area) and found them to be very competitive.
TW is not available here. The service I had for LD was Sprint which charges only 8 cents/minute (landline - landline) to the country I call frequently. Windstream charges 17 cents/minute for the same service; calls to cell phones are 26 cents/minute where Sprint charges only 17.
As I call both LL and Cell phones in that country, the charges (on average) are almost 4 times what I was paying with Sprint. As I telecommute, this is excessive and will lead to my not using Winstream for international calling as I can call using my Sprint Cell account for less when needed...
This is not very competitive...

UPDATE 11/04/09-- Seems like a lot of packet loss has plagued my connection now, going on two weeks. Promise after promise of getting in touch with me, fixing the issue within 48 hours, and actually doing something about the issue; don't get me wrong, I get the advertised speed, but I use voip, and play online games that require a low latency connection. I haven't had ANY problems for two years now, and all of a sudden this crops up. I'm sorely disappointed due to the lack of communication among tech support and level 1 support, so two stars come off here.
I will admit that the tech on this site is very helpful, but he's one out of a many tech support people over at Windstream that could actually get things semi-right.
Two stars come off for value of money, in regards to the reliability of the connection. Same for services.
I wish I had an alternative.
UPDATE 08/20/09-- Still going strong. Switched to a 4200 Speedstream modem. Still running the WRT54G wireless router, but changed the firmware to Tomato 1.25. The connection works, get about 80% of my advertised speed. No complaints thus far. Just wish they would run the fiber to the switch already!
Had Windstream for quite a while now. Subscribed to their broadband when it was first available (because we were tired of dial up and using two lines for gaming, and nothing else was available), which was around 2000-2001. We are running 3072/384 speed profile on a speedstream 5200 modem and a linksys WRT54G (custom firmware- dd-wrt)(cost with phone bundle is around $60 a month), but wish they would upgrade our area to fiber so we can get 6 megs. Install was good, but the order wasn't so great. I remember we canceled at one time, and then we resubscribed for 3 meg, but was put on 1.5 meg.
We paid for 3.0 meg while on a 1.5 meg profile, so I called in. Didn't get it fixed the first time due to the person telling me it would take 3 business days. Called in again (sales line) because I was tired of talking to Wipro. Got the issue fixed within minutes! Another issue I have is them telling us that they would fiber feed our switch, but it hasn't happened yet. Have been told several stories, and all of them are false. I plan to call soon on the status of the upgrade.
Overall, great service though. It's been a REALLY long time since the last outage (I'm thinking 6+ months).
Normally, I don't give any service 5 stars because nothing is perfect, and we haven't had another choice of ISP other than Windstream. I gave Pre-sales 2 out of 5 stars because they told me that we had 6 meg available a while back, but the techs have tested the lines and told us that the switch we are on is not fiber fed. Install co-ordination gets 3 out of 5 stars because of the issue with being put on a 1.5 meg speed profile, when we were paying for 3.0 megs. Tech support has 4 out of 5 stars due to the fact that Wipro isn't not employed by Windstream anymore, and the local techs have been very helpful in getting problems fixed.

I have had issues with dsl for a long time. The company has just done an upgrade on the dslam going from AT&T stinger to Adtran. I got a call trying to sell me 3meg service. I told the young lady I was too far from the company equipment. She said well they have just upgraded and this new service was available to me. Hey, I didn't know if they had made real updates to their technology or not. So I bit. The service worked great for about a week. Then I started losing connection plus slow to no through-put. I had called support and I know it is hard to know what is going on in every situation. Some CSRs better than others. They sent out a tech and he lowered my line speed from 3mb to 1.5. Worked for about a day. But my bill didn't go down. Now I am back to trying to get my service back to something I can live with, I came across dslreports and thought I might see what others are experiencing. Doesn't look good for the home team. However I am willing to do what I can to get better service. Don't have anything against Windstream, just want what they say they can provide and the service for the money. Wish me Luck, I don.t want to go back to dialup.

After 7 days of download speeds of 180 kbps to 220 kbps and multiple calls to tech support, I was first told that I needed a new modem which I got but the problem persisted. Then they suggested I had a bad router, which I replaced with no improvement. After 4 days they finally admitted there was a problem that affected about 420 customers but could only tell me that their engineers were working on it. After I posted on DSL reports I finally got a definitive answer about what the problem was but no estimated time for it to be fixed.
"At this time, we have a capacity issue on the DSLAM you are connected to. Network Ops is moving this case to our engineers to work up a site upgrade plan. We will keep you updated on its progress."

As a technical specialist working with a local Health Department, and working on a massive infrastructure upgrade project, I am working diligently to find ways of getting around WS's shortcomings and limitations. You want a nice managed network? Cut off arm and leg, and give to WS. You want it to work? Cut off other arm and leg, and give to WS. Want it to work this century? Hmmm, grow a new arm and leg first, then they will talk.
All jokes aside, I feel forced into purchasing services from WS, when I quite honestly do not want to...

I live well within range for 1.5M, and always had reliable service with GTE and Alltel, but when WS moved it it turned to crap.
They casually told me that they installed the wrong type of line from the pole to my house, openly admitted that the line from the CO to my pole was in horrible condition, and yet they do nothing to remedy any problems.
I will compliment almost every tech who has been to my house in the past 4 years; they almost always know what they're doing, and usually know what the problem is and/or how to fix it, even though with this company, it won't actually Get fixed. One or two I've dealt with, however, probably shouldn't be Near electricity, let alone data networks.
Two things to remember when considering Windstream:
There is a complex algorithm involved in determining the Actual speed you receive, involving how much you're willing to pay, how much work they're willing to do, where you live, and outsourced tech support.
The problem is on your end.
5-23-09
Some storms hit, completely destroyed my connection. Windstream responds by telling me I'm too far out for the 512K I've had for 2-3 years. The tech says "This line has run its course and can't handle your connection anymore." (WTF?!) He fixes it by dropping my speed to 128K (yes, twice as fast as dialup) without dropping my billing as well. I had to call billing myself and explain that apparently I was still paying for the 1.5M I had 3 years ago. He was nice and dropped me to $10 a month for the 128. Techs are coming back, will update sometime.

Now once,I will admit, it was actually on my end, my router messed up on me. But that was a first on a long list of "It's on your end" Because used to, I had no router, because I had no xbox360.

The only other option I had to consider for broadband was my the local cable franchise which went from charter to Newwave. And after previous experience with them, that's not happening again. That was the most unreliable internet connection I have ever had in my life. Anyways moving on...
The speed package I ordered from Windstream was (Download Max. Speed of 3.0 Mbps, Upload Max Speed of 384 Kbps.) I have done speed test since I have gotten the service. I may come close to the upload speed they mention. But as far as download speed goes it hits 1.5 to 2 mbps down when it feels spunky. But I have yet to hit 3 even when downloading from amazon.com.
The order process was a pain in the butt. I had to plead with them to get greenstreak, Before it was advertised. Kept having to repeat myself "Dsl is all I want, my cell phone is my primary phone" finally got the green streak service(A customer shouldn't have to repeat themselves more than once when they know what they want). I wanted 6mb down, but was only close enough to the co from what they said to get 3mb down.. and I don't even reach close to the speed I ordered. The inside wiring in my house is cat5. And I live well within the city. But the main line from the co must do some crazy stuff before it reaches my house....
I did a 12 month contract so I could get a deal.
They supplied a 4200 modem. And USB cable and a Ethernet cable.
The worse experience for me was having to deal with tech support. I don't even remember the guys name, but it would have been nice if he could at least speak english better. He didn't seem to even attempt to give a dang that, Windstream wasn't meeting its end of the deal. You know, I give them money, they give me timely activation of my internet service. So that was a headache to deal with and explain. He kept trying to tell me the problem was in my house. *Sighs* (It turns out it wasn't my problem after all, was on their end)
I would gladly pay 50.00 a month for a stable 8mbs d and 5mbs up.
Over all windstream is okay, but if I had better options I would drop em like a bad habit. I'm willing to pay more, but I cannot even upgrade because the options are not there for me to do so.
*Update* 7-26-08
Well its July, and I have started to keep track of the times my Internet connection drops for no apparent reason, that I can tell of anyways. Here is my list:
May 30th Internet went out around 5pm June 3rd Went out around 5pm June 4th went out around 7 ish June 13th Went out at 8:03-:04 Pm temporarily. June 14th Went out at 4:53Pm temporarily. Came back on. During Halo3 match. June 14th Went out again at 4:59 PM temporarily. Came back on. June 15th Went out at 10:55 PM June 27th Went out at 4:55 PM for some reason, came back on a minute later. June 27th Went out at 5:06 Pm came back on about a minute later. June 28th Went out at 6:32 Pm came back on about a minute later. (Was Raining) July 7th Went out at 9:30 PM came back on about a minute later. (Had rained earlier) July 16th Went out at 8:20PM came back on about a minute later (Sunny day) July 18th Internet was out at 5:11AM (Modem acting like it was working, but wasn't) Time that it came back on is ___6:28AM________________(Modem lights showed activity) July 18th Went out at 5:20 PM came back on a few minutes later. (Sunny Day) July 18th Went out at 8:10 PM Came back on a few minutes later. (Sunny) July 19th 5:21 AM went out. (Dry Weather) July 19th Went out at 4:18PM (Dry hot weather) July 25th Went out at 6:00 AM till ? was back on 12pm (checked on lunch break)(Modem showing service but connection was not working)
I decided to see if it was a consistent time, and weather.. when it went out. *can't really say I see a pattern yet*
Update 9-27-08
It seems I have been having more outages than usual.. especially when I start do do heavy downloading. *was trying to watch videos on demand from amazon* and noticed, repeatedly my connection started dropping. (Not sure what caused this)
Was also downloading Microsoft's student edition of Microsoft office 2007 today.. and again, my connection dropped about half way through that download. It was a 59.95 download and you could only download it once. I would be extremely pissed at Windstream(Not sure who else I should be mad at), but I have a download manager and was able to resume it. *Thank god*
Anyways, the only thing I can do, is hope they fix the problem, whatever it may be. I don't know if there getting more customers than there infrastructure can handle or what.
It's putting me in a pretty bad mood.
11-22-08 Here lately, connection seems to stabilized, it has stopped dropping as much as it was(Like every day in the evening). So that makes me a bit happier. Could have something to do with the fact I have seen a few Windstream Trucks in my area recently.
Still only getting 2.3Mbs(A little better than a few months ago) and 364Kbs up though...
12-15-08 For the past month my service has been stable, no drop offs. Except once. So I moved the score up a tad.
12-26-08 As good a time as any to happen. My contract ended today, bill is up to 44.48 for Green Streak service. (although I only have the modem connected and no phone hooked up) And my connection also started to drop today. Which added injury to insult.
I really don't feel like I am getting that good of a deal at 2.5/2.6 Megs down...
2-3-09 Connection has been doing extremely well, I am happy to say, for over the last month roughly. Maybe do to the "bad economic times" people that share the connection.. have been dropping off? Anyways I'm happy none the less.
2-24-09 For the last 2 days my connection has been horrible. Re-connecting/Disconnecting. Not sure what's going on, I am a patient guy.. Have not contacted them yet. I figure I will get the usual run around about restarting my modem, my computer. etc. etc.
2-25-09 Well connection still acting screwy, turns out there was a problem in my local area. But it also turns out it may have been my modem as well (some combination from hell). (Had it for 1 year). Anyways called customer support described the behavior of the modem lights after asking if there were any problems in the area, They said yes. .. CS said the way your modem is acting is not normal, and told me they would replace it. So I have a new modem. (Had to re-agree to new terms of service)
Had to install some sort of software...
It was definitely no plug and play matter and be back up and running in seconds. It took probably 15-20 minutes.. waiting on the modem.
Anyways, everything seems to be working fine at the moment.
CS is back in the US! It's been so long since I had a pleasant experience with Windstream Customer service.. I was so thankful.
5-21-09 Connection has been pretty reliable since my last update. No real connectivity issues. But starting yesterday and this morning, connection has been dropping at random times.
Checked out my connection doesn't seem to be anything on my end.
I think it should be noted that Windstream has some new adds out talking about how reliable there service is and doesn't drop. They must be talking about there business class internet service, because this surly is not the case with residential service.
6-21-09
I just want to say that I had a great day of playing Horde in Gears of War 2 on xboxlive, never had a problem as I defeated endless enemies with my comrades, not a hiccup in sight because Windstream is just super reliable /end sarcasm
I would DROP Windstream like a bad habit if I had another option of broadband that was better. Unfortunately I switched from horrible cable ISP that had the consistency of Swiss cheese to Windstream, which is somewhat better.. but there not beating the cable service provider in my area by much.
I really want to brag about Windstream, but I can't.. well unless it's about customer service. That is the only thing that has gotten better. But that took a long time. IF it takes them this long to fix there network and upgrade.. I'll be dead by the time that rolls around, or eighty years old and not care about gaming. One or the other.

| Re: New Windstream service Well there my only option besides the cable co, of course I am sticking with them. As far as the speed bumping goes, I know they will probably only do it where theres a good ROI or competition(Cable co is offering 10 mb down where I live, still staying with Windstream even though max speed is 3 mb, its more stable). Was really surprised they were doing a roll out of fiber in Lexington Kentucky.

| Windstream Service I had ALLTEL for many years until it was replaced by WINDSTREAM.
I pay $69.95/mth which includes local/long distance, DSL, insurance, the whole nine yards. Their service has been impeccable, DSL tech advice has never let me down, and when my husband also got a computer, Windstream furnished the necessary equipment so we could both be on line at the same time.
In addition, I have my DISH bundled in on the same bill (@ 49.99/mth less $5.00/mth discount for doing so. (I hate DISH and will get rid of it as soon as the 2 year contract is complete!!!)
Effective July 1, my McAfee protection will also join my bundle @ $2.99 month which is much less expensive then buying it outright.
Windstream has never failed to answer any question I had, and did so immediately.

Their tech support might as well have came straight out of some back water high school! Their supervisor Sidney ID N9931637 has as much of an idea on what is going on as the man on the moon! What a joke this company is! I've called them over 6 times in the last 10 days and all they keep telling me is that their is an outage in my area?? Every time I've called they tell me it will be fixed in 24 hours! Still not up and running!! What a joke!!
