I have the symmetric 10 up/down. For this package, they do have a 20 gig-a-month transfer limit (counting both up and down), but, though I honestly think I probably have violated it every month since I've had the service (6 months), they have yet to send me a nasty-gram. Real troopers! My down regularly tests at 9.0 to 9.5, and up varies from a "miserly" 12.5 mbps (yes, FASTER than download), to over 30 mbps. I pay $140/month for the 10 mbps package, an upgraded television package, and local/long distance telephone, and I've yet to have ANY service disruptions due to Surewest. It just works, and the majik pr0n box goes strong! The ONLY reason I marked Surewest down on anything, that being "Pre Sales Information", was because I bought a brand new home and transferred my Comcast service to the new house without having ever been informed Surewest was available. I found out by going and talking to an installer working on a house down the street about a month after I moved in. I asked if he knew when fiber might be available in my area, and he said the development was built with fiber already installed. O, Whoa Was Me! lol Update 11/30/07 Had my first problems with service. I've never, ever, had a problem with tech support/service/outages in all my time with them (a year so far.) They are head and shoulders above any other ISP I've ever dealt with. 10 mbit symmetrical, what could possibly make for a better wet dream? I use my connection to host web pages, bittorrent (distroing linux distros), and raisin hell on teh internets! I've had DSL from Surewest.net (originally known as RCSIS.com) for 2 years now and I couldn't be more pleased. While they do have a monopoly in the area and speed caps, the cost of their DSL service (384/128) was only about 5 dollars more than a second phone line and a dial up connection. As others have stated, I too suffer from broadband envy due to the fact that I use my connection primarily for gaming, although I have never had a problem finding a fast and stable game server to play on. I have given thought to changing to ATT Broadband, but after seeing the problems that a couple of neighbors down the street have had, I'll be staying put. The speed gain just doesn't seem worth it. In the two years that I've had their service, there has only been one service outage, and that only lasted for 2 hours after I discovered it. After a quick phone call to customer service to find out what was wrong, they discovered that they had an equipment failure in the area and had a crew on top of it. I've made other calls to customer service in the past, none of them problem related, mostly just for information, and have encountered excellent support/knowledge on their end. While they could be a little better in the speed department, if you live in the Antelope area, Surewest is not a bad choice. 4-23-03 Surewest has introduced it's "Up to 1mb" service now. Since ordering, the slowest that I've connected is at 800 down and 150 up. According to the sales staff, I should never be below 384/128, which is now their minimum. That used to be the max that I could receive. I've even seen it above 1mb a couple of times. Looks like Surewest has finally come around and uncapped their DSL service. Oh, they also dropped the price to $45 3/26/05 What a difference 2 years make. Every couple of days, speeds are dropping below 300 down and 80 up. 4 different support tickets when speeds were around 130 downstream have resulted in nothing. Now they're offering 3 mb/sec service and was just informed that I'm too far out to receive it -15500 feet (max is 15000.) Funny thing is when I first signed up for DSL that distance was much shorter. In fact, my in-laws that live right down the street (less than 250 feet away) have already received the 3 mbs service. Was told by surewest were in the same wire center, so I'm curious where the extra footage comes from (same street.) Highly disappointed in Surewest - overpriced for lousy speeds. Time to give Comcast a try. 4/1/2005 I'm definitely giving surewest a bump up in their tech services category. The Lady that informed me that I didn't qualify for the 3mb service arranged for a technician to come out to my house and check my lines to resolve my current speed issues. (My hats off to Leslie, none of my previous calls got this far.) The technician found a couple problems in my line and fixed/replaced the cable up to the house. Now I have the new modem for the 3 mb service sitting on my desk waiting for activation (should happen on the 6th.) Once I get activated and test the connection, I'll update again, but Surewest is once again rising up in my opinion 9/25/2207 Hmmm... Guess I should have updated this a long time ago. One year to the day after upgrading to their 3mb service, (had to wait for their contract to expire,) I dumped Surewest for Comcast and have never looked back. Surewest's speeds would never get above 600kbs, usually less than 300kbs, and the final kick in the teeth was when a tech informed me that I never should have been sold the 1mb upgrade do to line length. Still to this day haven't figured out where the extra length came from, around 8000 ft seems to be the original number I was quoted when I first signed up for DSL. I first ordered the service in April in response to an ad for free installation and equipment. Customer service explained that there was a delay due to the fact that there was a backlog due to some backordered equipment for the CO but they thought that they could install in 3 weeks. That 3 weeks stretched into about 6 but I didn't have much choice but to wait because Covad and Flashcom had the same problem since they had to use Roseville Telephone equipment. They called me to arrange an install date for 5 days later when the time came and the tech actually showed up 30 minutes early ! He had me up and running in 30 minutes and I have not had a problem or an outage since,which is over 4 months now. I ordered 384/128 service and I am consistently in the 360/120 range. Installation and equipment was totally free but I had to install an ethernet card myself. (Took 15 minutes) I did sign a one year contract to get the $39 a month price and ISP service is an additional $10 a month. IP is dynamic. Modem provided is a Fujitsu Orckit. I am totally satisfied and would recommend RCS Internet to anyone in the Roseville Telephone service area. I haven't been to the review page in awhile and I thought maybe it was time to update this review. I have had SureWest DSL for 21 months now and my problems have been minimal. I have had like 2-3 outages max for maybe a couple of hours and when I call customer support they are always very polite and helpful. Sure I would like to have better speed than 384/128 for $49 but the next level is $96 for 784/256. Since they are a subsidiary of Roseville Telephone they ain't going anywhere and I will not find myself with no service one day without notice like happened to my friends with Excite@Home. I average 365/120 speed with good pings and no packet loss. Since this network is pretty new there is no problem with patched together equipment form 30-40 years ago failing at weak points. If you want high speed around here they are the way to go. Time to update this review again. SureWest recently offered me a chance to upgrade my speed to 1MB and offered to drop the price $5 a month. Whats not to like? I have had the service about 2 months now and connect at a constant 1006/160 with no down time. We have 3 computers in the house and now everyone can surf at the same time. Not bad for $44.95 a month. I should also mention the customer service is great. I had a problem with my router when I networked the 3 pc's and tech support talked me through the fix in 10 minutes. They also answer the phone when you call,even on weekends. Update. Surewest has dropped my price to $39.95 a month probably because Comcast is now competing with them here. They offered to drop it for another 1 year commitment. Comcast is offering 1500/256 for about the same price. Time to update again. Got 10MB fiber optic installed from Surewest on 6/07. I could not justify the 50Mbps/50Mbps service, so I went with the 20/20 service. Previously, I had Comcast's 8Mbps/768Kbps service... night & day difference. I now have a static IP. I scheduled my install a month in advance. There was one glitch with install. Somehow I was scheduled for install according to the computers, but the dispatchers never scheduled me with anyone. I was given a 4-hour window. An hour and a half after that window passed, I called to see what the deal was. A fire was lit and I had two installers, who really didn't know what needed to be done, were sent and arrived less than 30 minutes later. They were knowledgeable and able to adapt. The main installer mentioned that this was the easiest install he'd ever done, as I had set everything up for him beforehand. Most of the time with install involved waiting for provisioning. Physical labor took less than 30 minutes (do to my prior work). I use my own, home-built router/firewall. For provisioning, I handed the installer the MAC address of the WAN interface on my router/firewall, which I had printed out earlier. I've lived in Elk Grove for 4 years now. My first years with Comcast HSI were very disappointing. Even after placing RG-11 cable between my cable tap and demarc I still had internet downtime at cetain parts of the day due to improper signaling. I've called tech-support and scheduled many appointments, aboll of them go unresolved. Surewest makes their product available and I was instantly relieved from service interruptions. I've done my research before-hand concerning how they wire their triple-play services so the installation was very simple. I've never looked back since. In the few years I've had with the service, I can only recall 2 times I've called them for connection troubles. Both of them were for DNS lookups where I had to enter them into my router. But since I knew were DNS adresses go, I had no troubles taking in the information. Customer service, to me, has been very helpful. But I can imagine having to deal with them for a longer duration could be very frustrating. This can be said about ANY ISP. The service just runs and runs fast. I haven't had any concerns about the caps they enforce on these services. The most data I've ever received would only be from those bulk compilations you would download from iTunes or some other music services. Maybe I'll get into more if I subscribed to some IPTV service in HD. Overall, the service is the best I've ever received from an ISP. Where to start, I moved to my new house, I wanted Surewest because i have a lot of customers with them, I found out they now where offering 50meg fiber service, so i placed the order, i setup the install date to be 5 days from order, 2 days past and i get a knock on the door, both cable tech and install tech were at my door 4 days early which was great, the only thing that sucked was i was not expecting them so i was in my boxers, lol. took them like an hour to get everything up and running, they did a great job, and where very kind, and i asked them how many customers had the 50 and to my surprise i am the 6th, lol, i needed it to support my business. They said they could not hook up a router to there fiber modem so i had to give them a mac to one of my machines, so later on i had to call tech support to change the mac to my linksys rvs4000, the first 2 people i got on the phone, acted like they where straight off the short bus, i mean totally retarded, took them almost 15 min to pull up my account info so i just hung up and decided to call in later that evening, finaly i get someone that knows what there doing, so got the mac changed and i have not looked back since!!!!!!!! now i asked about the aup cap on the bandwidth and everyone i talked to said there was no cap on 50, not sure about any other speeds, that was the reason the price was so high. we will soon find out though, i think my servers will surpass the 400gb limit in about 2 weeks. member for 16.8 years, driveby review (so far) lodged 16.8 years ago
As per moving back in with the parentals, I was joyous to learn that the residence was "fiber" connected. I took a look at the fiber modem, and fiber lines coming into the residence, and was quite pleased. However, after looking through the paperwork, I first couldn't understand why we were only being given 3mbps/768kbps. After speaking with my parents who purchased the service, they assured me that we did in fact have fiber internet, despite my thoughts of otherwise. Just recently, SureWest, claimed to be doing some "upgrades" to the fiber system. This set off my first red flag, as I pondered why they would have to do upgrades to a system that was laid out not too long ago. About two months after receiving this notice, two SureWest technicians paid a visit to us. They started their whole sales pitch on upgrading us to "fiber," which set off another red flag. The next question, which i presented to them, was weren't we already on fiber. Their answer, came to shock us a bit, and irritate us even more so. They said that there was fiber running to the house, but this was only a conversion of existing copper coming in. As per such, the houses were prewired for fiber, but the land was not fiber networked. Our appointment is scheduled for June 1st, 2007 for the fiber installation. Other than that, it has been quite stable and reliable. Ok, so I've been running their 20Mbs up/down for 3 years and not one time has the service gone down. I had Frontier DSL shortly after I moved in, but Surewest was made availabe 2 mos later and I switched over to the 20 Mbs plan. Install was simple - they hooked the fiber line to an outside box which they connected to my cat5e outside which terminates to an OnQ box where I simply attached outside run line to my Cisco Pix and gave the install guy the mac address of the pix and I was up. I did have to give them 4 more mac addresses from machines that were behind the firewall - weird but the guy said they reserve ips by mac address, even if the mac address of the machine is not directly connected to the ip. When I replaced the pix with a ASA5505, I simply cloned the mac of the old pix and stuck it on the ASA unit and it worked fine without having to tell them about the new mac address of the device. Speed is always great and the pricing is pretty good considering my package includes 20/20, 5 static ips and unlimited telephone service throughout the USA for $150.. I have not talked to them once since the install 3 years ago - that's how good this line has been. If I ever move, I am going to make sure they service the area cause the Frontier DSL and the SBC DSL lines I had in the past don't even compare. I don't know about their supposed caps - I run an Exchange server and one website and have never heard anything about bandwith usage, but then again I don't really transfer huge files outside of a couple MSDN ISO downloads a month (this is where the speed helps - downloads from MS fly). member for 24.6 years, 155 visits, last login: 14 years ago lodged 16.9 years ago |
