I would like to review the service that I am receiving from DSL.Net. I
currently have 16 locations throughout the US with DSL.NET and will be
adding 3 more this spring. In most of our locations we have had very
reliable service for over a year. The few outages we have had
were related to facilities issues with backbone providers. (AT&T loosing a
DS3 and the train crash in Baltimore that spilled acid that ate through
some fiber optic cable) In both instances they were very responsive and
kept me informed as to the status of the network. They are very efficient
at the installation process consistently coming in under 30 days to
complete the install. I believe that the fastest was about 19 or 20 days,
with the longest being around 32 days I believe. They have been very
supportive in helping us with router configurations and troubleshooting
internal network problems. What issues we have had with DSL.NET have
been common issues with in the industry. For example we were trying to
get service in Weston Florida and the LEC had the incorrect CO for the
location so DSL.NET thought they could provide service to the location
when in fact they could not. The LEC has since updated their recordes and
DSL.NET will be able to provide service to us after all. I have dealt with
several ISP's and DSL.NET has out performed them all, they are not perfect
and we have not had 100% uptimes, but they are very responsive and are
constantly trying to improve their service. I believe that most of the issues
that they have are inherent to the technology an the industry as a whole, the
way they have responded to any issue that has arisen is what has impressed me the most.

I would like to review my DSL service provider, DSL.net . I have been a
subscriber for over a year and I have had nothing but uptime and good
service. I was amazed that , from first phone call to pinging out from
my new DSL line took less that 30 days. The service was down for 1 hour
in the last year, and that was scheduled downtime due to Ameritech (my
telco). I have had to call customer service twice, once for DNS entries
and once because I ripped the end off my wire and needed to know the
color pattern to crimp a new end on. For the DNS entries, they had my
records in and propagating while I was on the phone. For the wire
crimping, they offered to have a tech out the same day to do it (but I
opted to do it myself). As far as throughput, I get what I pay for
(768/768), and I could get more at a very reasonable rate if need be.I
would like to submit this review, along with any other material you
require, to let folks know that this is a company that makes business a
    pleasure.

Soquel,Santa Cruz,CA
$179 per month (12 month contract)

"got out of the contract"
"nobody home - no support, no billing dep't"
"avoid this ISP like the plague"
Pre Sales information:

Value for money:

DSL.Net is doomed. I signed up for 384K SDSL business class service @ $179/mo. They were reasonably quick to deploy despite a very unclear install schedule. The rest was downhill. Tried to reach technical support - tried over 8 hours (1 hr x 8 tries) and even used the "network DOWN" selection. Nobody home. Emailed support 10 times - no response at all. Tried to reach billing department - can only email (no phone) and no response at all to emailing every several days. Tried all the above for 3 weeks. Though my speed was 384K/384K I never saw anything above 300K in repeated tests.

I was fortunate enough to cancel my contract in 30 days on their "Quality of Service" clause. Whew!

If you are in Soquel or Capitola CA there will be new PacBell "terminal" available 12/31/2001 and you will be able to get fast ADSL from a good ISP like sonic.net . I am in Soquel at 21,000 feet and will soon be only 100 feet.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------

    update 4 Feb 2002

DSL.net is really a mess. After canceling my contract on 25 Oct 2001 I had to call them on 24 Jan 2002 (3 month later!) to get the paperwork processed. They did this but somehow (anybodys' guess) issued a new connect for Prodigy. This meant I couldn't move to another ISP and despite many phone calls (at least DSL.net answers the phone now) they claimed the line was free and clear. Fortunately with the help on sonic.net (damn these guys are good) I was able to get a manager from SBC on the phone, and undo the hold on the line.

DSL.net is completely without any redeeming value at all. Sonic.net is to be highly praised for going the extra mile to help resolve my problem. Thank you SBC too for helping sort this mess out.

Chicago,Cook,IL
Business customer
$405 per month (12 month contract)

CLEC party: DSL.Net
"Excellent Reliability, Excellent Value, Excellent Pre & Post Sales Support"
"None"
"Highly Recommended"
Pre Sales information:

Value for money:

As a network professional who is always being asked for internet connection recommendations by my clients, I used to recommend companies that were local to the Chicago area. As is many times the situation, the company that I recommended most was bought out be a national telecommunications company who substantially lowered the standards of that company and raised their prices at the same time. So I began to search for another ISP.

After several months of looking and checking with people who had installed DSL.NET, I decided to recommend them to a client. My fears were immediately dispelled when DSL.NET had the circuit installed and working at the client's location in less than 20 days. The installation cost was $499.00. the router was $499.00 and the monthly cost for a 1.544 meg SDSL circuit (FULL T-1 SPEED) is less than $500.00 per month.

Since then, I have used DSL.NET at other client sites and am extremely satisfied with their customer service attitude. They send all configuration information in writing - BEFORE the circuit is turned up. Their installers show up ON TIME, with routers that work THE FIRST TIME and when they leave the circuit has been tested and certified to be properly working.

Recently, I had a circuit that was tagged by Ameritech and reported back to DSL.NET to be on a particular set of binding posts. When the installer arrived, the building cable person who was supposed to have placed a jumper between the binding post and the riser cable had not done so because he "could not find the binding post". It turns out that Ameritech had mis-reported the binding post to DSL.NET and it was off by more than 600 pair. The DSL.NET installer was able to automatically generate a tracing tone (without having to wait for a test desk to answer the phone), and in less than 4 minutes the correct cable and pair had been located and the circuit was up and running.

I HIGHLY recommend DSL.NET as one of the few remaining companies in Illinois that actually come through with what they promise.

"Don't even think about it"

Value for money:

I was solicited by DSL.net because my then ISP at the time Zyan Communications filed for bankruptcy and DSL.net was aquiring the assets. They offered a transition for customers over to them if you didn't want disruption of service. They made it easy for you -directing you to their web site and put in your personal info along with credit card. Well first bad sign, there was three days of disruption followed by several contacts with tech support to get me re-connected. I also had learned the hard way that I had to repeatedly disconnect the modem for a minute or so and reconnect because my service kept dropping off. (never had that issue with Zyan).

My service was affected by the Sept. 11th attacks as probably most were, but though the incident was clearly beyond their control, I waited like everyone else to come back online. Businesses were of course the priority. However, it took me two weeks to finally get through to them (after extremely long hold times - some were -no joke - up to 3 hours). When I finally got a live pulse, I was asked why a I didn't report this sooner with them? They did finally issue me a credit for the downtime, but service continued to be hit or miss.

One wek later, I called them to request a cancellation of service. I was told to simply fax over a written request of my intent. I did. A week goes by and I call to follow up with them (even though they have all of your contact info to begin with) and find out no record was found. I had to re-fax again. Another week goes by and I call back again to follow up. My request was finally executed and I asked for a final bill to pay out the balance. I was told that their billing system was automated and they could not manually generate a total. I should just pay the next bill in full and would be credited later. We'll I paid my balance off!

Two months pass and I get two more billing invoices. I called them and was told their billing system was down and to call back later...I call back later and was informed of a one year contract by a rude customer rep. The invoices were "cancellation" fees. I tried to dispute the charges (even come to some negotiation) but again was rudely told "tough" and to "Have a nice day".

We'll as customer I don't appreciate the "service" provided and was not told of any binding contract when we were transitioned over. With all the contacts I have made with DSL.net they coulds have AT LEAST notified the customer of such penalizations. You think they could have just said, "You know Mr. X, you may terminate your service with us but you will be charged a cancellation fee". Not one customer service rep! And when trying to dispute the charges I was told "sorry" by their RUDE customer service.

(Guess my attorney will have to tell them to "Have a Nice Day").

Our company has been with DSL.net for over a year.
We renewed our contract for another year in May.
DSL.net have been great at providing the service we need. We have had 1
instance where are service was quite slow and our email was off and on. This
was due to the tragedy in NY. Other than that our service has always been
consistent and customer service, when needed, has been great.

"So far so good."

Was trying to get SDSL from Ardent (CAIS) Communications for about a month. After initial conversations with a great sales rep, the compnay has since disappeared. Broadband.com the referred me to DSL.Net. After talking to them for about 30 mins, we decided that they provided the most features at the cheapest rate. We didn't qualify for Qwest (8059ft from CO, go figure), and everyone else charged $650 for setup (DSL.Net - 499.00 with 200.00 mail-in rebate). Monthly charges seem to be about the same as everyone else. The ability to get as many IPs as we require at no charge was huge.

Verizon partitioning went without a hitch. Scheduled delivery and setup of router the same day that verizon came out. Very fast turn-around time. They also provided all the IPs and network information at time of scheduling.

2001.12.06 - Installation took place on schedule. Slight hitch with PVCs (DSL.net and Covad) being mismatched. Called after hours emergency tech support pager service on 12.05. Message stated call back in 30 mins. Left message at 9:45pm and 10:30pm. Response occured at 4:00 am. Sales Rep (Edgar -great job) called for follow up later to ask how things went with installation. Seemed genuinely concerned about my problems (they were fixed at this point) and told me that they are looking to improve service, especially hold times (I personally had no problems with hold time). Also gave me his hours and direct number if I had any other problems I could contact him directly.

2001.12.14 - Been up just over a week. No problems. Connectivity is what it should be.

Will keep DSL Reports up-to-date on what happens.

    Started the Process: 11/15/2001
    Features: 384, 25 IPs
    Price: $189/mo + $499 setup - $200 cash Rebate
    Submitted Paperwork: 11/16/2001
Committed Delivery Date: 11/30/01 (from Verizon)
Committed Router Delivery Date: 12/5/01 (from DSL.Net)

    DSL.net

    Review: Near horror story.

Did not meet quoted installation date.

We ordered 1.5m SDSL line - received 1.0m. No explanation. We had to submit
a change order for the 1.5m provisioned speed.

Sales representative never returns phone calls / faxes or emails when
    requested. Always different excuse.

Tech misconfigured our router and relayed the incorrect information for our
    network config.

Be prepared to be on hold with tech support for a minimum of an hour any
    time you call!

    We would NOT recommend DSL.net!

MAy 26, 2001: Just got migrated to DSL.net's network last night. Luckily it was a weekend night so little interuption to our business.

We are a Zyan refugee. Luckily Covad bought Zyan's assets at the bankruptcy firesale. DSL.net was the chosen one to take over Zyan's retail dsl lines.

Talked to a salesman (Jerry) about what they would offer us. Got a better package than we had at Zyan. We had 384 sdsl (not in reality), 20mb website, now 384 sdsl 40mb website...

Transfer from Zyan was seemless. DSL.net took control of Zyan's servers so no immediate need to change any IP numbers or move our webpage.

And, even more important, they actually have tech support with quick respones by email and phone.

    I'll keep posting updates...
    -----
    10-27-01:
Hmmm...had to email DSL.net weeks ago because they hadn't fulfilled portions of the signed contract. After receiving no response, I contacted our SALES rep and finally got words of action. After a two week wait had to contact them again because webhosting still wasn't turned on. They finally did that and switched domain from Zyan's old server to DSL.net equipment, but they forgot to put in record for email--that took a few hours to fix...

I had to terminate my ADSL service (384/384 kbps at
$165/mo.) with DSL.net after 4 months of service. When
my service went down before the September 11 disaster, I
made several fruitless attempts to reach their tech
support via the telephone. Then I sent an email message
to their tech. support without any response. It is after
the company's VP of Sales received my second email
advising him that I plan to terminate the service when I
received a call from a tech support personnel.

At that time, my line had been down for three weeks. The
person told me that they were affected by September 11
tragedy and they had to reprovision my PVC. I told them
    to fordet it.

My rating for the company on a five point scale is as
