Ordered 1.5Mbit/512kbit basic service using QuickCOnnect pkg (do-it-yourself with no on-site installer) -- purchased C$309 3COM modem & C$30 NIC -- get C$159 credit on ADSL charges and C$5 off monthly charge so only C$35. (C$ = US$.67) Process was: 1) Wait on a list 2) Get e-mail to register 3) Call customer service, order service, get ID/Pswd/e-mail; give credit card 4) Purchase ethernet NIC and 3COM ADSL-Ethernet modem 5) Install NIC, modem, put supplied filters on analog devices on the line 6) Wait 5 business days for ADSL 7) See green ADSL indicator on modem after only 4 days! 8) Complete registration online to activate service 9) Connect to DSLReports.com to get tweaks and run tests. Telus.net very poor service in EdmontonI also Ordered 1.5Mbit/512kbit basic service using Quick Connect pkg. However my experience was much different.
I ordered ADSL, I already had dial-up access with Telus. They sent me the Quick Connect Package however never told me they would charge me courier fees to get it to me. I only work next door to them downtown and I could have easily picked everything up, I even offered to.
They said it would be set up in 5 days instead it took 7 days. I called their helpdesk 5 times to resolve various problems. During these calls the Helpdesk Analysts continually tried to convince me:
1) I had no problem 2) The problem must be on my system or within my house telephone wiring 3) My settings must be wrong 4) The sites I am visiting must require numerous "hops" to get to. They will always be slow. 5) They said I should be happy with any connection speed I get and they do not offer 1.5 Mbit but "up to 1.5 Mbit"??
After the 5th call I told them I was having problems even when visiting their own suggested sites. They said they would have someone call me back. I never received a call back however suddenly my ADSL began to work. I never changed anything on my end so who knows what they did.
In my opinion Telus has a problem because they have too many departments and do not have any formal monitoring of their customer service practices. They have a Sales department to sell you the product, a Helpdesk if you have an issue, and if you call enough a Repair Department (611) that will finally come out and repair the problem.
I have kept and documented all my calls and all the things they asked me to do. I really hope we get some more ISPs' out here to provide some competition. I am by no means a computer engineer however I know when I am being mislead and given wrong information. I am so very surprised this site does not provide a more realistic picture of how they operate.

pre=sales had all answers about payment program and box contents; used self-install, only 20 minutes; account activation 1 min manual does not deal with pre-installed IE 5.5 browser; cd wants to install 5.01; line speed slow in heavy hours, 950k otherwise killer value at $US 99 for the 3com modem and $US 22 per month

Vendor is Telus (BC Canada) Details covered in the panels. Good value and solid help. No snags. Slow speeds in evening hours. Tried cable and this is much better and cheaper. 2 Static IP's supplied. Self-install ran fine from manual. Waiting list was 2-years plus, though. member for 23.4 years, 16 visits, last login: 18.8 years ago lodged 23.4 years ago

MOG'S PLACE HAS TELUS ADSLI think it is 2 dynamic IP adresses that we have and not 2 static Ip's... although I will check about getting a static IP# instead cause I heard they are much faster and $59.99 with the home connect (which I have) versus $34.99 which is what I am paying now.

I ordered Telus' HomeConnect ADSL service and picked up the package at a Telus store in Calgary. The connection was promised in 5 days but actually took 7 days. No service call was required I just plugged everything in myself. The main problem came when I logged on to register my computers and get an IP address allocated. I was never told that the password to that site was a telus password not my password, and several of the phone support people didn't know either. I have two computers (one Win95 one Win98) a 3Com hub and the 3Com ADSL modem (supplied by Telus). I previously had two lines with a 56k dialup modem. I am getting consistent downloads at 1500Kbps and uploads at 500Kbps. Telus provide 4 microfilters for the analogue devices on the line. I used a single filter at the incoming connection box making all of my old line one inside the house a filtered line and connecting a straight through connection to my old line two which I use for the ADSL line. As I have at least 8 devices on the analogue line including a security system, two satellite TV receivers as well as three phones, answering machine and a couple of other modems this was the easy way to do it and everything works perfectly. I can recommend the Telus QuickConnect ADSL as a quick and easy way to get connected at a reasonable price. member for 23.5 years, 3 visits, last login: 23.5 years ago lodged 23.5 years ago

I think he is reffering to telus.net quickconnect that is the package where he purchased the DSL modem for 300$ and gets a discount because he is not leasing equipment . and requires him to do the setup. http://www.telus.net and click on high speed services for the info

I switched from cable to Telus ADSL earlier this year, and have been very happy with it so far. The speed is consistently good, and I'm having none of the problems I had been having with cable (eg., mail server outages, slow news server). Only once did I need to call Tech Support after install, and that turned out to be a hardware problem with their modem -- which they replaced. The 90 days from order to on is misleading... when I finally got fed up with my cable company's service, I called Telus and found out that my exchange was not ready for DSL yet, but was going to be soon. I put myself on the waiting list. Several weeks later, they notified me that they were now ready to go in my neighbourhood. I could have had in install within two weeks of that time, except I needed a Saturday installation (not being able to take time off work to have it done on a weekday), and the first available Saturday was several more weeks away. About half the 90-day period noted above was waiting for DSL to become available in my exchange, the other half was waiting for the first available Saturday. member for 23.5 years, 3 visits, last login: 22.2 years ago lodged 23.5 years ago

Got DSL this DSL link over 2 years ago. It's been fairly stable, although there have been 1 or 2 problems that are more than likely related to impedance that they have not been able to track down properly. I'm on the old Netspeed 202 equipment so I get the 2.5 down by 1.0 Mbps service with 5 NAT addresses on the 10.x.x.x series. Installation was great, the Telus guy was knowledgeable, although their tech people have no idea how to fix a problem that I've already diagnosed and know to be an issue. It would be nice if they could provide me with external IPs and have the delegated to my DNS server on my other DSL line for reverse DNSing. Oh well, can't have it all.. Overall quite nice, too bad they don't use much of the Netspeed 202/Cisco 675 equip anymore since the speeds are better. -Tux88 member for 23.5 years, 23 visits, last login: 22.1 years ago lodged 23.5 years ago

Security on ISP'sMost ISp's do not allow reverse DNS'ing and giving out the information you are asking for. it sounds like you need a diffrent package. one that allows servers and a network. check thier high speed packages at http://www.telus.netalso if you you are that technically advanced to trouble shoot your own connections then why do you need thier technical support? are you running a firewall. that breaks your connection and messes up most 'net admins'

My name is Ron McOuat from the Greater Vancouver BC area. I got the only service available when it first came out (Jan 1999) which is now called the Professional service (up to 4MBits). Several friends at the time were telling me the competition (cable) was delivering service worse than 57.6K dialup during the busy evening hours and their TV ads knocking the phone line as technically unfeasable galled me. I get 3Mbits download at 4500 feet from the CO. The installer upgraded the line termination, installed and tested without a hitch. The first day the DNS/DHCP server went down for an hour and I have had one more outage of DNS/DHCP servers since for an hour possibly. The modem is a 27020 Mainstreet from Newbridge, a dynamic IP which hasn't changed in months is provided. member for 24.4 years, 3 visits, last login: 22.7 years ago lodged 23.5 years ago

a satisfied telus customerI'm very glad to hear that you like the service we offer. I work for Telus as a support (phone) tech, and, frankly, most of the customers calling in with problems usually find that they have a prob with thier ethernet cards. Rodgers seems to have dropped the ball in Vancouver.

Re: a satisfied telus customerjust as an aside, we are now providing those horrible 3com home connect modems...must have gotten a good deal on 'em. Don't get me wrong, they work, but um, give me back my Mainsteets....or a cisco! LOL

My name is Myles and I live in Calgary Alberta, I've been a Telus subscriber for a few years now but just ordered the $40/month 1.5Mb/512K RADSL earlier this year. I had to wait 6 months for my hook-up due to the popularity, but the installation went smooth even though I use Linux. I've been very happy with their service and the speed is excellent with the 3com modem. Tech support wasn't needed in my case, so the fact that they don't "officially" support linux was moot - however chances are that sooner or later you will speak to someone there who will admit to using Linux regularily. Telus Net ADSL a Good Deal !I am in Edmonton, Alberta, which is Telus-country....
I agree that the closer you are to the closest Central Office, the better. xDSL is very dependent on this, and unlike Cable Access(where you can be up to 30 miles away or more), the 12,000 - 18,000 ft limit imposed on xDSL customers is likely to remain for some time.
It is only when the cheap monopolistic phone companies (i.e. Bell & Telus) invest in creating more local-loops that are xDSL ready, that we will see increasing areas open-up.
One other point is that just because you live approximately at the xDSL limit, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will qualify for the service. This is because the actual copper-phone line is physical line, and as such is required to wind its way around streets, etc. It does not travel in a straight-line directly to your little house.
Therefore, the best way to determine if you qualify and what your speeds will be is to call the phone company and ask them to perform a latency / resistance test on your particular line. They will provide you a figure in Ohms, and the lower the number the better... I believe the limit for xDSL is around 1120 Ohms. This will give you a more accurate figure than just estimating the feet from your Central Office. My reading from Telus was above-average at 710 Ohms.
I'm installing a 3Com HomeConnect modem myself - and the service will be hooked up next week. For those of you who live in Alberta, Telus has a really good deal going for doing the installation yourself - also, the install is not rocket science:
* You have to go to London Drugs to buy the 3Com modem package ($299 less $100 on next phone bill = $199 total) * The $50 install fee (special, as regular is $110, by the way) is waived (obviously). * Cost per month is $34.95 instead of $39.95. * The first month is free when you buy this package - a $39.95 value. Not available when you rent the modem. * When telus does the install, they physically alter the telephone jack, so if you move, you need to pay yet another $50 to have them do it again. The package uses filters that you take with you and are re-usable. * The only other cost is to buy a Base 10T PCI Ethernet Card (around $10) from Future Shop, etc.
All in all by saving the install fee, getting the 1st month free, and saving $60 a year on the monthly charge - the modem will almost pay for itself after the first year. Also, I understand the 3Com Modem is a new model, and can be used on many different areas, in case you're moving out of Albera altogether.
Anyway, Good Luck & Take it Ease Peeps...

Recently switched from "Videon" cable modem to "telus.net" ADSL. Videon mail service unreliable, cannot connect at least 50% of the time. telus.net is ROCK solid, I regularly achieve 200Kbps download speeds from any site anywhere in the world, my plan allows for up to 2.5 Mbps download speeds (which no one ever seems to get). Excellent remote access and terrific National (Canada) coverage for dial-up access which is INCLUDED in the plan. My plan includes Domain Hosting. ====================================== Rick K. ADSL! This beats Rogers@Home hands down!!!In western Canada, the commercials Rogers/Shaw have been pumping on a daily basis, extoll the virtues of cable over the competition, ie., telephone connections. They never directly compare their cable hook up to ADSL. In my mind that's kind of sleazy. I had cable and it was only marginally better than dial-up during peak periods and twice the price! Now I have ADSL, own my own modem, and pay 5 bucks a month less for a service that is fast, consistent and not grossly misrepresented. If there are ports open in your area, this is definitely the way to go. Well done TELUS!!!
