This may be biased, as I was an employee for 3+years, but here goes. Service: -Least intrusive ILEC ISP in the country. No throttling, no Deep Packet Inspection. -Bandwidth caps are not heavily enforced. -Those on older, non VDSL2, ports are stuck with 1Mbps upload, so be careful with multiple people using P2P as it could bring your home network to a crawl. -Only Major ISP in the country to offer IMAP email boxes. Phone support: - If you actually know what you're talking about, you'll be disappointed. - If you have no clue whatsoever about technology and want a truck roll immediately, you'll be disappointed. - If you have an hour or so, and don't mind getting your hands a bit dirty, then you shouldn't have an issue. The revamped support model (basic/complex) means you may need to talk to Manila at first, but if you actually have a nasty issue, you'll be well taken care of by the onshore guys in Edmonton and Montreal. Field techs: - TWU Members (TELUS employees) - Show them where the phone box/demarc is, and you'll be good to go.If your issue is severe, the rushman you will get knows EVERYTHING... - Contractors: Some are good, some are bad. Don't expect ANYTHING above and beyond though, as they get paid by the job. member for 15 years, 1008 visits, last login: 11.7 years ago lodged 13.5 years ago
I have been a long time Shaw user. Speed and Price obviously where my biggest concerns. Optik's tv came online... and having just been given a great option to change for the cheaper.. why not. Somehow there was a $10-10-10 deal that came in the mail, and we jumped on it. So for the next year we pay $30 a month for tv internet and phone. Price was right... but how bout the speed. Well for the last month that I've been testing. I'm pulling down at consistent rates of 1.72 Mbytes per second. Top speed I could ever get out of Shaw was 1.2 and that was when the "speedboost" hit. then it dropped to around .9 . Always one thing to remember. This is not the "Telus High Speed"... this is " Telus Optik High Speed" ... it goes with the TV service. I still believe the regular High Speed to be far slower than Shaw's. Optik has really kicked telus into the next-gen. Standard hardware supplied is a D-Link Wireless G router. Nothing out of the norm, but there is a USB port on the router for a Hard-Drive share over the net-work. Nice option... not really required as I have network shares already, but for a newbie looking for more options it's nice. Order and install were great. The tech came on time, called ahead of time just to make sure, and was only in the house for about an hour and a half testing and setting up the systems. I'll repost after a few months .. just to make sure nothing else has changed in the review. All good so far. member for 13.5 years, driveby review (so far) updated 13.5 years ago
The only problem I ever had with Telus is that the tier 1 support call centre is in the Philippines and those people can sometimes get an address wrong, delaying your install until local techs get it sorted out. When it works right some lines are already enabled and waiting for you to activate access and those not already activated can be hooked up within 2-3 days at the most. Unlike Shaw, Telus doesn't bother you about bandwidth or cut you off to try to force you to a more expensive plan. They almost never notice if you go over the soft limit of 100 gigs/month and if you go over ten gigs in one day a local tech calls to check if you were infected with a trojan. Even though advertised speeds are lower than cable you don't get the routine harassment or arbitrary disconnections of a customer-hostile cable outfit like Shaw, meaning that in the end you can download and upload far more on a reliable connection that never stops for less than a fire or lightning strike. Copyright complaints are passed on anonymously and there is no such thing as three strikes. Due to many bogus complaints all of them are just passed on without assumptions of whether or not the activity is unauthorized or not. member for 19 years, 32 visits, last login: 12.9 years ago updated 13.5 years ago
I have 6meg service and has been very reliable. I find TELUS ADSL is good for gaming and VOIP services. May 2010 - Back with telus due to lack of consistent speed with shaw and if the power went out in town I would lose my inet even though I had power still. Price was a factor too. I'm paying 10$ month for 6 months with NO CONTRACT YAAAAAAA!!!! member for 14.6 years, 283 visits, last login: 327 days ago updated 13.8 years ago
I like it. Hasnt really gone wrong for me personally. I feel bad for those that do, and those are real problems. member for 14.5 years, 53 visits, last login: 13.4 years ago lodged 13.8 years ago
I have been with them since the early B.C Tel DSL days. I stayed with them till the end of 2007. By this point in time Shaw was a better value and more speed. So I switched over. Mid 2009: My available speed options went up to 600KB Down!. With Bundle pricing in affect plus a nice LnR offer I decided to switched back. Update March 2010, I got IPTV Mediaroom Upgrade. As a result, 25 after tax for 19000KB(19.2MBIT with IPTV's off) Down /120KB Up service with NO hard download cap(With in reason) or Torrent throttle is great. Shaw can not match. It is true like everyone else complains about, those outsourced front line tech support know nothing and are useless. Get forwarded too level TWO support when it is a major issue if you can. For the few times you may have to call. Level 1 and Front line are now all in the Philippines. member for 14.6 years, 100 visits, last login: 10.3 years ago updated 13.9 years ago
Options Considered: Bell, Shaw & Telus. Package Ordered: Telus High Speed Turbo Speeds: Telus speeds are 6094 Kbps down & 870 Kbps up compared to my previous Bell speeds of 2590 kbps down & 581 kbps up. Monthly Price: 6 months at $33.00 and then $48.00 per month thereafter. Order & Install Process: Compared company packages by phone, placed final order & picked up modem in person. Equipment: Siemens SE567 Experiences: All good so far from the ordering, getting what was promised & excellent tech support. Extremely happy that we are no longer dependent on Bell however the rumour mill has it that Bell & Telus may become one (Belus) company : ( member for 19.3 years, 2932 visits, last login: 33 days ago updated 14.1 years ago
TELUS has a great network, one of the best in the world from what I've heard. Downtime is very minimal and the speeds I get are very consistent. The people that work for TELUS and are on this forum are always very helpful; without them I might not value TELUS so highly. TELUS' loyalty and retention department is also great for getting deals on all their services when you have a problem. New service installations ALWAYS give me headaches. Something always gets messed up. But when everything's done I can't complain. The images posted are those from my older connections (3 mbps and 6 mbps) on a DMT2 port and the new one (15 mbps) ADSL2+ port. I have two clearances to my house. One is a dry DSL connection for my high speed turbo. The other is a unusable (by PC) DSL connection that provides a connection for my TTV's and phone service. I'm soon going to drop my long distance services with TELUS as VoIP provides me with better call quality, more features, and a more wallet friendly calling rate. I have used Telus High Speed since they introduced it at 1.5Mbps. Every time they introduce new upgrades which I qualify I had to repeatedly call their support because its never done right. For example I had moved up to their 2.5Mbps package and was stuck at 1.5Mbps speed for like a week. Finally escalated to higher tier support which identified and solved the issue in less than a few mins. I think their tier 1 support may use a bit more training. 3.0Mbps was then introduced which again did qualify but was not getting new speed. Service tech was dispatched this time and it was fixed. Again multiple calls to escalate. I then moved to a new area. Was told it would take a day to upgrade my 3.0 line to Turbo but it never happened. This time thanks to a support member on the forums I had my Turbo next day. However, my landline would not be able to make any calls...picked up to a busy signal. I call Telus and they ended up fixing it next day; something was "loose" at the CO. Ok now everything is blazing fast and I'm a happy camper. I just may have terrible luck with Telus but once everything works properly I have no problems with the service. It may have been down 2 days in the last 3 years. member for 14.9 years, 174 visits, last login: 12.6 years ago updated 14.3 years ago
I've had Telus for 7 years I pay ($92.00 per month for phone, long distance, call features, and Internet) and overall, I'm quite happy.I'm looking forward to the 15Mbps when it's available.I just wish that there was a way to toggle the upload speed from available download bandwidth, that would be an awesome feature,(maybe it'll be allowed one of these months! The service has been down for maybe 2 days since I've had the service (that I'm aware of anyway)My only concern is that lately,(within the past 6 or 8 months) the download/upload is consistently at 50% of max and regularly at 30% or 40%; it does come back to within 95% usually within a few hours, but not consistently. The price for the Internet portion is 29.95 for a 6Meg down /512 up service, The equipment is a 2-wire device with built in wireless, 4 hardwired ports, The modem/router arrived in about 5 days and the service was there when I connected everything. The only other real option is Shaw Cable, but we don't subscribe to cable TV so just an Internet connection thru Shaw would be $40.00 to $50.00. so not realistic. As I've mentioned, I am quite pleased with the service overall; and look forward to an upgrade and 15Mbps soon. member for 15.4 years, 2 visits, last login: 14.3 years ago updated 14.3 years ago |
