UPDATED REVIEW: Now w/ Turbo 15Mbps / 1Mbps profile using a SpeedTouch modem.

It took a while to get this up and working properly. Originally I was put on the same port I was using for 6 - loop length was a bit on the high side and it ended up with about 9Mbps down and 600 or so up. A call to support had a truck rolled the next day, they installed a new POTS splitter (free of charge) and moved me to a RDAC (remote terminal) - unfortunately the RDAC card failed at the same time they switched me over, so it took a day or so to get a new card installed and things up and running.

    The Good:

    * Speed is decent/stable and pings are relatively low

    The Bad:

    * Call centers are inconsistent. I got lucky and got skilled knowledgeable techs the past couple times, but I've had calls where I've had script readers who I doubt could program a microwave clock if their life depended on it.

The worst company I've ever dealed with.

the rep on the phone will lure you into contracts then you will get surprises on your bill (hidden charges)

for billing errors, if they admit (they will deny it first until you bullet proof it)
then they will still refuse to give you credit back except for the current month, the excuse they use is: you have 30 days to review your bill and should tell us right away...

the quality of their Internet service: Sucks.

On a 3mbps connection, with 2 landlines, and 2 mobility accounts. Infrastructure is not upgraded in my area to give me more than 3mbps. Have had it now for about 6-7yrs. Using an older Linksys ADSLME3 modem with WRT54GL running tomato. Rock solid combination, as I run torrents, up to 7 systems, some wired and some wireless, wireless bridged to my xBox, and 2 wireless print servers.

Worst part of Telus is their support - if you are fortunate enough to get someone who is knowledgeable and in Canada, all is good. Look out if you go overseas for support to someone reading off of a flow chart and for whom English is a new skill.

Best part of Telus are the support staff that know their jobs and are more than willing to do what it takes to help you. I've had some tricky issues fixed immediately, while other issues, need repetitious calls to get the right person.

Never call past 1700h MST as I always seem to go to the Philippines.

Once you know the pitfalls, its pretty good, working within those parameters.

    My Other Reviews·Shaw
I have not fully explored Shaw in my area as they really haven't impressed me in the past with service and reliability. I have never been approached with their service. No real deals coming from the competition. Telus nearly lost me with the poor trouble shooting of the tier one. The Techs sent to the house fixed the problem immediately. A filter was required and software needed to be set on the mainframe because some tier one guy left it set at 2.5 when I have bought 3.0, very annoying. The Dlink 300g router totally failed eventually but it died a slow death which not one Tier one support tech could figure out. I did get some billing credit but is was no where near the amount of hours I spent self trouble shooting my home. I was very angry with Telus for over two months as I could not get my service to an adequate level and poor trouble shooting on Telus's part simply prolonged the issue.
I am getting around 2750/610 for a posted 3000/640 most of the time. I am currently using the new 2wire gateway with a new adsl2+ POTS filter. The combination is good and I recommend this configuration for this type of service. 2 IPs and 10 hours of dial up and 5 email addresses. Security is very good although annoying.
    02/06/08
I just upgraded to Extreme today. It has some bugs in the software upgrade. The upload is really messed up.
The original order was lost this morning and the CO was not correctly wired for this new service. It was dealt with very quickly (4 hours) but as I have stated the software on mainframe appears to be in correct.
    current test

    02/08/08
The upload was fixed through software tweaking, its actually pretty good at 800kbs near the end of the test. The download is around 5020kbs, I'd like a bit higher.
No perks for upgrade to extreme from enhanced because I have the 2wire gateway already.
Ping is still buggered at 70ms. It actually got worse.

    08/22/08

The 2wire gateway was replaced several months ago due to an intermittent problem with the internal modem. The billing was messed up for several months and a refund for the replacement gateway exchanged took several phone calls, with many promises to correct the issue being unfulfilled for several months.
A new surge suppressor was installed on the phone line on the new gateway about one week after a new gateway was put into operation. Lightning is a problem in the summer as we receive a number of thunderstorms in the summer. Power failures and surges are common.

    07/08/09
Upgrade to Turbo today. One day turn around. 28 bucks for the first three months, 38.0 there after. I'll updte my review once I have a stable new connection.

    14/08/09

I called Telus about speeds yesterday and he confirmed my speeds are low. It is suspected to be the gateway which is misfunctioning. The truck will come next week for an in house troubleshoot.

    31/08/09
I was given a new Siemens router to replace my 2Wire Gateway. It seems like a good modem, but the wireless has been a pretty poor system. I want a stand alone modem and a after market wireless router. Lousy equipment is not a help its a nuisance. I have had one failed Dlink 300G and 2 poor performance 2 Wire Gateways. Now I have been given a Siemens that has a poor wireless capability. I hate this crap; because it just limits the service you have paid to access.

    Update

My contract is up and I am exploring Shaw and Telus. It looks like Shaw is a better finacial decision, but whehther it is a better technical service is still debateable. The two services have improved in their reliability, however; I am not sure if they can consistently provide reliable service at their posted rates. Telus has had very little downtime for me in the last 6 months. The speed does appear to be fluctuating more than normal and that is rather annoying.

    Ping time re: Canadian isp's

With the exception of a few small cable internet companies in and around Quebec Canada must have the highest ping times of any country that provides internet in the entire world including the third world. So bad it even makes satellite internet look fast.

    My Other Reviews·Shaw
I ordered the high speed 3meg package with phone and high def tv. installer did come when promised but did not listen to the instructions that my wife gave her to put the modem in my computer room/closet instead she just placed it on the floor in our bedroom which was not acceptable since we have a young baby and one more on the way. also she only hooked up one phone jack so i had to run some cable to the computer room for a new phone jack and also hook up the other jacks in our apartment. she also did not wire the cat 5 cables to standard which was really frustrating so i had to rewire those too. the modem they supplied was the 2 wire modem/router/wireless access point which has been a really good modem so far. other than the installation problems the service as been excellent.

Good points are very rare network outage, and very consistent speed. I've found that some of the techs that work for Telus and visit the forums to be very helpful and have gone as far as offering their cellphone numbers to contact them directly to fix problems that have arose for me. They've put in service calls on my behalf when they got back into work the next day. That is top notch in my books that they offer help like that while NOT getting paid for it!

Bad points are the CSRs from overseas. I've been driven nuts a few times on the phone trying to talk to some of them. I've had some that were very friendly but seemed to be relying on their "script books" too much to be helpful, to downright rude...and not helpful. Billing has been another sticking point with me. I've found on multiple occasions where I've been paying too much for internet and have had to call in and to get the prices adjusted. It seems kind of dirty in a way that I keep getting billed the same prices from 5 years earlier! I've had one CSR tell me that it's not their job to inform customers about being over billed.

Overall I feel I've gotten good value for my money from Telus over the years. The good definitely outweighs the bad and I will stay with Telus for the foreseeable future.

Original ADSL service was received a long time ago. (2000?) (Used to be on dial-up with Uniserve before.) As I recall there were no problems at the time. It took quite a while between signing up and actually getting service. This was not so bad since ADSL was just being deployed in the area. Price was around $45.00 per month for 1500 down and 512 up. A D-Link modem was supplied with no firewall or router features. Download speeds were around 165 kb/s.

First ADSL problem was frequent disconnects after having the service for about a year. A technician came out and tried to troubleshoot, but was unsuccessful. I did some troubleshooting on my own after he left and was able to repair a poor connection at the wall jack.

Service outages have been very infrequent and always short.

Two years ago, I signed up for a better phone service deal which was bundled with a better price for ADSL. The price of the ADSL service was reduced to $32.00 per month. I also received a 2-Wire modem/router.

On August 29, 2008 while checking my internet account service I noticed that my internet service had a cap listed at 5 GB/month. I checked and found out I could get 3000/640 for $25.95 per month with a 60 GB per month cap. I called Telus and signed up for that. The actual deal is 3000/640 for $32.00 per month. The $25.95 per month is only for new high speed subscribers. Also that comes with a 1 year contract with a penalty for ending it early.

A week later, I finally got the service upgraded to 3000/640. The original order was lost somehow. I suspect I asked too many questions and confused the customer service agent.

This time I called and asked for the upgrade and got a confirmation on price. It sounded like I might get the $25.95 per month deal, but I didn't query further. The service was then upgraded the same day.

    November 27, 2008:
Lately I have noticed an increase in latency during the evening. Pings increase about 200 ms and there are periodic larger latency increases.
    May 6, 2009
Evening slowdowns are common between 6pm and 10pm.
    August 12,2009
There was a service brownout that lasted over 2 days that is fixed now.

    TELUS taking advantage of suckers

The fact that TELUS is already using ADSL2+ technology, but refuses to offer higher speeds (10+ Mbps) at a low price is totally embarassing to the country - some third world countries provide better ADSL service! Yeesh! In addition, there is a rumour that the modems were deliberately configured to prevent anyone from getting access to higher speeds. IMO, this is illegal.

On the other hand, TELUS knows Canadians are complete suckers for spending so much money on things with low value, so screw you.

In today's standard, people should only be paying $15/month for 6 Mbps line. TELUS is screwing the people by a difference of $20. Multiply that amount by millions and that equates to a lot of $$$ stolen by TELUS. Criminals. This is why internet must be nationalized. Free market doesn't work in the long term.

    Peter20000000008

    @telus.net

Telus as overpriced as any other in Canada

As the above poster noted, Canadians are overcharged for their highspeed internet services, and, unlike many other countries, most Canadians have a cap on the amount they can download. Canada also has slower speeds than many other countries as well. CBC did a story on this, you can read it here »www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008···and.html
I'm not sure if this is still the case but South Korea and many other Asian countries had the lowest highspeed internet prices and I think most, if not all, did not have download caps. Ultimately it's just all about money. Canada has maybe 1 or 2 service providers in a given area, and smaller providers, if any, are basically only resellers as they rely on access to lines of the bigger providers. Basically, internet service is monopolized and thus providers charge whatever they want, under whatever conditions they want (ie. download and speed limits, lack of customer service, etc). Not that the public actually cares. This is a country of people that quitely still paid the higher exchange rate price even when the Canadian dollar was on par with, or higher than, the US dollar, and, when asked if it bothered them, said "no, what can you do?"

that sounds exactly like my first hook up with Telus as far as dates, prices, and speeds. I joined around 2000 as well and now I'm sure of the year because of what you posted (also was just rolled out in my town, same $45/month for 1500down/512up but I had the 3Com HomeConnect and was coming from AT&T dialup. Hell I still have the original booklet that the installer brought over!

"Very reliable, free hardware, very good support sometimes"
"Occasional DHCP IPs dropped, slower than advertised, slower than competition"
"It's fairly cheap and reliable, so I'm not quite driven to switch yet"

I've had Telus DSL for years and although I don't get speeds as high as friends who use Shaw I don't ever have the connection go down. I do have to re-request DHCP addresses once in a while but that could simply be the Modem/Router they gave me.

Most companies have issues providing decent support but I have had one tech who came out from Telus who was very helpful and knowledgable: he traced the issue (so he says) to the neighborhood box and got things sorted out. I haven't had any techs fall asleep on my couch, which is nice (Comcast I'm looking at you).
