I have worked with Telus since before they even offered ADSL. At one time their backbone network was one of the best in the world, and I have no reason to believe that has changed. However the downside of Telus is Customer Support (or lack thereof), and always has been. This does not include field support personnel, whose only downside seems to be too much work and not enough people. Even the CRTC has been unable to get them to clean up their act. Like Microsoft, Telus seems to think that all customers are dummies and have to be protected from themselves. This is evidenced in their install disks, their online support system, and in particular their router offerings. They took a perfectly good router (Siemens SE567), and turned it into a piece of crap by severely restricting access to it.

    Hi

I use to have them their router worked out great but I found that it was difficult to run any services on it and then got really angry once.

    2Wire and Siemens are rubbish

As soon as I found out that Telus was trying to sluff a 567 on me, I flat-right told them that I had my own router. I managed to get a Thompson and it's been solid for over a year.

If you need the best speed and reliability Telus is hands down superior. Speed on my system is always 9000-12000. No matter what time of day. Service has always been great regarding up time. Telus rarely is disconnected. Shaw on the other hand is down 4-5 times a month. Usually only for less than an hour, but it happens often. The system with Shaw slows to a crawl when the kids are on line with the "shared loop" technology.

Reliability and speed, Telus is in my opinion the best offering in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia

Installation went smoothly and on schedule, a WIFI Router and modem is supplied with 4 ports of hard wire available. The wifi "bubble" is good to 100 feet. And the cost is reasonable.

Recommended. 15 Megabit service from Telus.

You're out of touch in reality, no offense

Eh...no. $50/month is too high for a 15 Mbps line. This isn't the stoneage, for the ADSL2+ technology existed a decade ago. Canada happens to be one of the countries that is lagging behind in technology due to the deregulation and monopolization of many industries. Hence, internet is ALWAYS expensive in Canada.

TELUS has plans to lay off hundreds of Canadian workers and subsequently replace them with immigrants from India. They claimed that this is necessary to remain competitive, but most sane people know that this is bogus. (pfft...it's really the stock value that TELUS is worried about - keep investors happy and maximize profits --- customers last).

I'm currently using a T3 line (50 Mbps) and it's costing me $0. :P It's pretty obvious that TELUS and Shaw are rip-off con artists.

Started in 2001 with the 1.5 Mbit service, subsequently upgraded to 3 and now 6. I had some issues with low upload speeds, but after a visiting tech installed a POTS splitter, and an hour-long session with various customer support people, that was corrected. I get 5200 Kbit down and 800 up, using a Thompson modem.

Service has been very dependable, with only one outage of note in the last three years. The soft usage caps have not been an issue. I did appreciate Telus' Usenet server, but that's history now. (I find Easynews quite adequate for my Usenet needs, at US$10/month.)

The voice response system on the help line has smartened up some; it is less annoying than before. The front-line help line people seem inexperienced, or misinformed, but I am always able to reach someone, eventually, who can fix things.

    TELUS? Fast? What?

They don't have to throttle! Their speeds are so low in the first place that they don't have to worry about oversubscribing *too* much.

I'm sure even with the "throttling" you'd probably get at least three times the speed on Shaw.

I've been using TELUS DSL since the BCTel testing days in 1998. For the most part, its network has been rather reliable, but its DHCP and DNS servers have been rather iffy in the past. My nightmare with them happened in 2005 when I moved from one house to another. It took three TELUS on-site technicians to get the service installed in our home simply because they failed to place a filter on the line in the initial install and missed it on the second attempt to get it working.

I had a couple experiences with Telus and neither were good, as follows:

Grande Prairie AB, summer of 2006, I subscribed for internet service at my parent's house. First problem was that their online sign-up service didn't work, even though it all went through. So a few days later I phoned up Telus customer service and place the order by phone. They give me a deadline of a week when the service should be active, all good, right? A week later, still no service. I call Telus to find out what is going on, they tell me all sorts of reasons why and tell me to wait another week. Repeat 3 more times. So, 4 weeks later, the service is finally activated. That's a full month waiting for DSL activation! The Telus customer service reps and techs never told me the truth either. I ended up talking to someone I know personally who works for Telus in GP, he told me they didn't have any available ports in my area and were waiting on the installation of a new remote. Why didn't Telus tell me this the first time instead of telling lies? Or at least they could have been honest and said they didn't know.

That wasn't the end of problems with them either. Some time after that, they bumped their "high speed enhanced" service from a 2.5Mbps download to a 3.0Mbps download speed. I actually had to call them to get the speed increase! Had some other minor billing issues too, which I have been able to solve, unlike the case which follows below.

Edmonton AB, Q4 2008, I have ordered internet service from 3rd-party wholesaler DSL ISP Teksavvy. The expected activation date had come and gone and still no service, I contacted Teksavvy and they submitted a ticket to Telus to look into the issue. Telus dispatched a technician to fix it, the problem happened to be at their end and the tech NEVER ENTERED THE PREMISES. Later that month, my roommate gets the phone bill and there were two $35 "line activation" charges. What then followed was about a dozen calls to Telus to sort out this billing issue and have the unjustified charges refunded or credited. Almost every phone call was the same "we'll look into it and call you back in a few days", and they never called back. Months later, still no refund, my roommate is still out $70 because of this.

By far the most terrible customer service I've ever dealt with. Not only do you have to talk to a stupid robot before you actually get to talk to a real CSR, their CSRs seem to be unable to efficiently resolve billing problems, and aren't kept informed about the situation in their various service areas. On top of that, their billing system is kind of screwy and new installs can take quite a while. Let's not even get started about the cost of their phone service.

Stay away from this ISP unless you really must. And if your absolutely need to get their service, pray to $diety you never have to call their customer service to resolve a billing issue.

I'll give them only one thing: once up, the connection is pretty reliable. Advanced users stay away, Telus blocks several ports you may need/want to host certain services.

I spent a very very long time with another phone company. A 1 year contract turned into 7 and $600 even at that point to get out of it. With Telus, they have been clear about their contracts, features, and phones. I get great reception with them, and I have made a point to renew my service when I could have left. It's honestly been a very nice change with them, and I would suggest if you are already with them, stick with it! Don't try to hop the fence because you can find yourself in a strangehold very easily

Signed a contract for the 3.0 plan a little over 2 years ago. Bumped up the speed within two months for 6.0. Never had a problem at all with the speed or connection. Never had to call into tech support. Extremely happy.

They advertise the rate protections plans as a benefit, however if you are in a contract and want to bump up a level they charge the non-contract price for the upgrade. If the price goes down, yours stay up. Whats the benefit? A negative if you ask me. Price is a little higher than Shaw for a bit lower overall speed. I do prefer the consistent speed of ADSL over the shared speed of Cable.

A few days ago I upgraded to Turbo. They had me hooked up in 4 days from the order. A really nice lineman came over to my house and spent a couple of hours making sure I was completely happy. Initially they had my upload capped at 512, in the end he had it fixed at 1mbps.

As of right now could not be happier. In 7 months when my contract is up I will have to re-evaluate my position.

Just moved into Cityplace in Toronto. I've got 100Mbps fibre down and around 8Mbps up. 1 month free, $34.95 for the first 6 months, then $49.99 per month after that on a 1-year contract. No blocking or throttling. Seems to be unlimited bandwidth. This connection is the ONLY reason I left Teksavvy.
