I recently upgraded from Telus Enhanced to Telus Extreme ADSL.
When I 1st called to make the change not only could they not find my information but the CSR was clearly unskilled with computers and dealing with customers. I ended up requesting another CSR which yielded a hang-up.
After calling back, I got a new CSR who was very helpful. He set me up with the new service, which ended up being cheaper than my current one. 24 hrs later it was up.
Unfortunately, the connection went from 5mbps down down to 500kbps. After renewing my IP the connection speed was back up again. 10 Mins later it was slow as molasses once again.
So I found myself on hold again with Telus then again dealing with a highly unskilled CSR. Frustrated with all of his rudimentary Windows 98 type fixes I received a Ticket number and decided to monitor it for the next 24 hours to see if it would improve. It did not.
I called again. This time they agreed that it could be an issue on their end and scheduled a tech for the next day. They said he would call at 8:00am. By 11am I was on the phone again. The CSR managed to find out that the tech would arrive within 2-3 hours. 15mins later he was here.
He ran his tests, called a tech at the CO and concluded that I needed a Modem upgrade. He installed a Thompson Speedtouch modem and instantly all was good.
The bottom line: If you plan on going with their 6.0 service, make sure you request a Thompson Modem. Also, their phone support was horrible. You have to pressure them to get anything done. Once you do get a good CSR mind you who agrees to send someone the on-site tech arrived quickly and was very knowledgeable.
I am happy with the connection which to me is all that matters. Unfortunately, I had to fight tooth and nail to get it that way!

generally good service, although the tech center usually is not a help, most of the time I ended fixing problems myself, including hooking up all of my phones myself from the pole box as they would not do for me in under 90 days

I have used TELUS' ADSL service for 14 years at two locations. Overall, I am satisfied with the service. Due to constant re-bundling and repricing of services, I have checked with the carrier every 6 months or so to see if my then current plan is still the most cost effective. Quite often it has not been and I have then switched to another DSL offering with the same carrier.

What other options did you consider for broadband
I had no choice for where our business is located
I have to say that I am tired of the lvl 1 crap you have to go through to get any service tech out to fix any problems and if I had the option to switch to anyone I would in a hot minute.

1 edit | Either it's ignorance or lack of punctuation. I don't think your complaint has any relevance to how Telus does business. If you have been with Telus for over 6 months, you will be charged $45 to $50 like everyone else if you are using their Extreme service.
The people being charged $35 are on the 6 month promotion before the $50 charge comes into effect. Telus doesn't owe you a refund at all if you have been using their services for over 6 months and just got off the promotion. Get use to it, this goes for anyone that uses their services. -- GA-X38-DQ6 / Q9450 @ 3.52 / 4GB Mushkin Black PC2-6400 / 9800 GX2 / Ubuntu 8.04 LTS AMD64

Thats not entirely accurate, I recently signed up and its 30.95 for the first 12 months and 35.95 after that (that includes the 5 dollar long distance subscriber discount).. 45 Bucks is a bit steep, but this shady practice is used everywhere.. they don't notify clients that they've lowered prices, hoping the clueless don't call them on it. Most won't make it retroactive.. well unless you threaten to leave.

| Re: Either it's ignorance or lack of punctuation. I'm probably paying $45 because I am running "Dry DSL". I don't have a land-line with Telus. 1 edit | Re: Either it's ignorance or lack of punctuation. Hey Xtort, if you renew/sign a contract, you get the current price, I believe.
If your month-to-month, no such luck
(edit: there is no dry DSL fee anymore, and has not been for as long as Extreme's been around, I think)

| Telus Pricing Don't be hard on anyone who does not understand Telus pricing. They post an introductory price and then put the ongoing price in small print. The base price of $50 per month is either not posted or very hard to find. My daughter went back to school and I signed her up for the lite service. It was so slow, less than .3 Mbps that she seldom used it. She was on a 3 year contract. In her 2nd year, she found a student price for Extreme. I called and asked if there was a contract and what happens to the old contract etc. I was told that she could go back to her old contract when she was no longer a student. She finished last spring and in September the rate went to the "normal" rate. This was not the rate available on a contract when she signed up but $50.00 per month since she didn't have a contract. There would be a surcharge to go back to lite on the original contract.
To top it off, when the student rate ended, Telus charged a cancellation fee of $212.00 including taxes. In October, they agreed this was an error and would reverse the charge. It is now December. From other posts and other forums, Telus keeps the customers money for 6 to 8 months. The charge was not reversed in October and there is not reason why. One agent told me to file a credit card dispute with the credit card company.
This companies bate and switch pricing is illegal and my goal is to expose this company for what they are.

I have been a telus adsl customer for 9 years. Started with 1.5 service, and had only a few issues when first installed. I switched to 3 meg service 3 years ago, and had no issues. Getting 6.0 was different experience though. They use a tool they call "Loop Qualification" that based on estimates disqualified my line from 6.0 meg service despite a technician measuring the maximum attainable was over 9 megs using the legacy port that was connected at the other end.
After my tech went to bat for me, he convinced them to change my port to a ADSL 2+ port, and then measured the attainable speed again. My line is capable of 16.9 Megs down, and 1200 up. Armed with this data, my tech was able to get the disqualification over ridden, and now I have super fast ADSL, and have had absolutely no issues with it. Fast and consistent, and blows away my neighbours I originally paid for 1.5 when it was first installed in 1999.

I'm running 2 load balanced 3mbps links, one of which I'm upgrading to 6mbps when the promotional price ends. Also getting TTV HD, which took a while for the tech visit to be scheduled.

The below review was before I moved. This is a while later and problems keep piling with no end in sight. I have finally decided to simply switch to SHAW. Latest download speed got as low as 700Kbits/s. Absolutely horrible.
___________________________________________________________________________
The service we have is Telus high speed enhanced. On speed.net it averages at 2800kbs down and 350kbs upload.
The install proccess was very quick, but only because we already had connection through them. Delivery of wired/wireless router was about a week late though. The router is a 2wire576. It seems to work just fine, but using the DMZ zone is not recommended as the router will try to change IP address every few days. At which point one has to physically turn off the router for about a minute and then restart it. It can be annoying at times because You never know when it will happen until Your connection simply stops working. The router's software is average. To my preference it isn't as feature filled as it could be, but it is simple enough for an average internet user.
Overall it isn't bad. But limiting actual speeds for download/upload is bad in my view. It is still better than the regular high speed internet. The added extra virus, anti-spam and firewall features are good. The added software for repairing wired/wireless conection works great. It also allows wireless conection to be used without the windows wireless service.

My Other Reviews · Shaw |
I was a long time loyal Telus customer. I had dialup through Telus and was an early adopter of adsl when it became available in my area. I chose adsl because in theory it would be faster than cable ('no shared connection")
I would have days to weeks of no connection. The issues were never properly resolved and the support staff (in call centres somewhere far far away) were less knowledgeable than I was, and would suggest that I needed a new motherboard...VERY frustrating and never able to help.
I changed to Shaw cable ultra highspeed and have been very happy with service, connection and speed.

I recently found that they have been over charging me. They will work at helping you but if they do or not its a roll of the dice. They have great e-fix programs that come with their package. The system is stable unless they are working on the lines. The new web mail upgrade is a joke, the links don't display, the mail pages don't display correctly if they do at all, and all they say is that they will look into it. mean while the classic web mail is still to be removed on Oct.1/08 The company is so big that to talk to them is a waste of time, they don't hear the concerns of the other departments and help each other.
I don't see it getting better but I don't see a better provider
Its been two weeks waiting for the Extreme package which is the one i have been paying for for the past year, if that makes any sense
