Very disappointing service. DSL was installed and ran for 2 (yes two) days (1/6&1/7). It went down and I am still waiting (it's now 1/17) from someone at MSN/Northpoint to call me to schedule an appointment to come to my home. It has been "escalated" twice. Which I believe means that they take down all your information and shred it. When you call tech support, they tell you it's out of their hands. When you call the feedback team, they assure you someone will call. NOT!!! I am very much regretting being tied into a 1 year contract with MSN at this point in time. If my service is ever back up and running, I will possibly change my opinion.

One week after service started download speed is ranging between 230 to 290 Kbps. Regular calls to MSN and Northpoint during installation process were necessary to keep track. Luckily I called to find out that Verizon had been scheduled to put in line the day before. If I had not checked this appointment would have been missed. Otherwise installation went smoothly. The connection was in and equipment (Arescom NetDSL 800) was working 24 days after order but there was a problem with the DSLAM blamed on Verizon. This took another two weeks for Northpoint and Verizon to resolve. No horror stories to report here.

I had MSN installed in early December 2000, it took appx. 21 days from order to install. Everything went fairly smooth, except i didn't recieve my CPE in the mail, so the NP tech had to schedule an alternate install date 3 days later because he had ran out of CPEs (used last one at job before mine that night).
3 days later NP tech shows up on time, with CPE in hand and begins to wire jack etc..., does a neat job of wiring and gets everything hooked up. After trying to connect he tells me that MSN was having problems with the gateway server, and he could not get modem synced up. He makes some calls and tells me that i should wait 2 days, and look for line sync. He further states that there is some sort of problem on my line and that a ticket would have to be opened with Ameritech.
After 2 days, guess what...LINE SYNC, whooohooo! i am able to surf!! The problem i ran into though was that my line would lose sync, and once i pulled the cable from the DSL jack and re-inserted it, i discovered it would sync back up. I call MSN, they open trouble ticket...then i lost my connection ALL TOGETHER for 3 WEEKS!
I placed numerous calls to tech support at MSN, and kept getting escalated and getting no response ( i was VERY polite BTW)! Finally, i get a hold of a higher tiered tech and we have a conference call with a NP tech, he ran some tests, and discovered i had an open loop at the NID (Demarc) point. He had a tech out next day, and my connection is back and not one time have i lost sync!!! COOL!
i get on the AVG. 1000/100 speed from my 1500/128 line....not too shabby, and i am 8000 ft. away from my CO. My pings are high (avg. 100ms) but, the speed is great and i NEVER want 56K dial-up again!!! Broadband is GREAT!
I think once MSN gets on the ball with the installation coordination and tech support, they have a good product, at a good price, along with good speed comparable with Road Runner in my Area!

OK, I've been with MSN/Northpoint since mid December of '00 and since that day, I have NOT been able to download anything. And it appears that no one knows why I can't, either. I've contacted MSN at least 10+ times about my problem and they keep on Escalating my problem (Escalation = waiting four days for technicians to call back...they don't..). I must have been through 7 escalations so far, and no one at MSN is deciding to help me. So I'm just going to give up and cancel my horrible DSL.
The installation (both of them..) took about five hours each. The technician on the phone with his labtop open and me watching over him was very annoying, and I hoped it would all pay off. Of course it didn't. I had to call MSN about this problem, and they still did nothing about it. When I contacted Northpoint, I was able to get another technician to come back out to my house and properly install it. This time, he installed it correctly and everything was supposely working fine. Until I tried to download something, then the problems started, and never went away.
I have an ARESCOM NetDSL 800 modem, which should be dynamic IP. The modem hasn't been giving me that much trouble, however, my WAN light refuses to go on once in a while.
All in all, the time spent with MSN and I were horrible. They have the worst technical support I've ever seen, and the speeds are incredibly horrible. Do yourself a favor and pass up MSN DSL.

Finally got MSN/Northpoint DSL up and running (1-10-01) after I placed the original order (early Dec 2000). Had some problems with installation from local phone company (Ameritech), which was fixed after the Northpoint service tech came out to do the original install. Upon the second installation date, the Northpoint tech came out and this time the local port at the CO was not initialized (apparently I was the first one in my area using that particular CO for DSL). After another 5 days, I was up and running. It seems that Northpoint is handling MSN accounts with kit gloves. They are working very hard to keep their MSN customers very happy. I love the service, but am a little cautious with the current DSL industry and Northpoint financial situation. I was an @Home customer until I had more and more problems with connection speeds (usually around 200-500mb/sec). I am really happy with MSN/Northpoint and would not hesitate reccommending it to anyone who is able to get it....just be patient with the DSL installation process (but that is with any DSL company I suppose). My current speeds are around 900-1300mb/sec with a distance of 13180ft from the CO.
**Northpoint went into backruptcy a year or so after this posting. I no longer have MSN broadband internet./March 2005

Maybe it was the time of year or I'm just lucky, but my experience with MSN DSL was great. I applied online in response to an online ad, after agonizing over a DSL choice (partially due to the wealth of negative info at DSLReports.com). The price was too good to beat ($39.99/month). According to Bazillion I could only get 256 kbps down, and Ameritech (local Bell and DSL provider) had nothing. They were both wrong. In a few days I got an MSN CD in the mail, and was asked to install it. One week after applying I got a UPS box with the DSL modem, sealed for the installer only. Ten days after applying, Ameritech came out and did some outside wire work, in the process knocking our phone out for a short time, without warning. The next day I had a phone message informing me that the phone company had done its job and that it was now Northpoint's turn. I called back the next day, and they set up an appointment for the following day! I took off the afternoon for the 12-4 window. It took him from 12:30 to 3:30, but when he left I had 800 kbps down/144 kbps up (according to DSLReports' tests). Since the computer was not adjacent to a phone line, he ran line from the network box outside, under the siding, and drilled in nearby (in the snow, no less!). After everything was otherwise connected and set up, he spent one hour on the phone while constantly refreshing a Telnet session to the modem. Apparently I was the first MSN/Northpoint customer at my CO (Naperville, IL), and they didn't have something set up - "no box on the shelf." Since then (3 weeks) I have had no outages or other problems. Note: It was a good thing that I had already installed a network card for the DSL connection. It could use USB, but I've heard opinions against that.

Dec. 1: Signed on for MSN/Northpoint in spite of the snide comments about it on this site. My thinking is that after two providers I'd selected went under or were taken under (Red and Phoenix) at least MSN is more likely to survive with Northpoint or another partner to minimize the possibility of service interruptions to me. I'd laugh all the way to the bank so to speak with the 1.5M of speed I qualified for by virtue of my proximity to the telco/switching station at $39.99, a price that no one else was offering at the time. (Verizon offered that speed only for $99/mo.)
9 days later, I got my Arescom 860 modem via Airborne Express and a phone call from Northpoint telling me to expect my outside install by Verizon the next day.
My calls to Verizon to check when the tech would be dispatched (first or latter half of day) so my husband didn't have to take off the whole day from work were rebuffed by rude reps and Verizon supervisors (Ms. Ponzo) who said they didn't have to speak to Northpoint customers.
The following day, a Wednesday, my Verizon installer came prepared to pull a line and wound up connecting extra pairs of wire I had from my current phone configuration. I was surprised to learn that being able to talk and surf at the same time didn't mean voice over DSL, but a dedicated line. Who cared as long as it wasn't going to cost me more. Interestingly, he said there was little DSL installation business for the installers these days with RoadRunner taking over the residential market on Manhattan. I received no follow up call from Northpoint, so I initiated my own and finally the MSN customer service folks arranged an appointment for the following week. Amazing! My inside wiring was to take place 20 days from my signup date. I thought I was going to be able to post a happy record here at DSL Reports.
The Northpoint tech came promptly as promised, but four long hours later he left in frustration citing a problem at the DSLAM that no one was in the home office to fix at 9:30 at night. I cleaned up the plastic wrapping from all the jacks he installed to save my cat from an untimely visit to the vet and hoped Northpoint would fix the problem promptly as he suggested they should. No such luck.
Over the following two weeks, Northpoint, when contacted by MSN in response to my frustrated inquiries, repeatedly blamed Verizon for the problem their own tech had said was Northpoint's to fix. Finally a doggedly determined and helpful MSN customer service service rep named Mary pinned the Northpoint folks down who at last admitted that yes, the DSLAM is their problem to fix. Ah, but with the holidays their techs were three weeks behind schedule. We're going on five weeks since I placed my order and still counting .Will post again when/if the problem is resolved. Meanwhile I research how long I must wait till free of MSN's contractual obligation. On the other hand, from reading all the horror stories, I wonder whether Earthlink could really deliver on its estimate of 15 days to get me up and running or whether they'll would actually provide the 1.5M speed.

I had Bell Atlantic from Oct 99 until Feb 2000 (they continued to bill my credit card until August). They provided a USB Infospeed modem that trashed my commputer off and on(I believe they dropped the product because of quality but didn't bother to inform any of their users). I think driver problems. It was a horrible piece of hardware. It finally failed and I couldn't get Bell Atlantic to fix it. After about 4 hours on the phone one day I signed up for MSN.
What a difference, Rhythms handled everything. Bell Atlantic wouldn't share a line so they installed a new one (thanks to a big cable coming into the house). I had no issues. Rhythms had some configuration problems, at the time MSN was just starting to provide the service (mar 2000). I have had no problems working with either company (Rhythms or MSN). They have corrected aany issue that came up.
I got 6 static IP addresses (one for the gateway, a MSN provide cisco dsl modem) so I can hook everything up. MSN opened up the speed to the max. I usually get 1.5 to 2.2 MB/s down and 760KB/s upload. This is better than most if not all my cable modem friends.
There were a few days that the service was down in April but it has worked consistenly since then. Originally I had to call Rhythms for connection issues and MSN for content ones. Now MSN has taken over all support. They are pretty knowledgeable now and I have great support. I am so glad that I don't have to deal with Bell Atlantic now. I often hear on the news how they have oversold the service in town. People wait forever and get lousy speed to boot. Bell Atlantic support was essentially non-existent.

I signed up for MSN DSL 12/7/00 and I had it installed 12/23.
I must admit that I work for a national retailer that promoted MSN and therefore I had recieved an offer to try it free for six months without any costs and without a contract. Who could resist.
MSN provided a dial up account for me to use while I waited for the DSL and they said that all installation coordination would be done through email. I recieved an email from MSN stating that SBC would install the outside wiring on the 18th. They showed up on the 17th, but since they only needed to work outside it wasn't a big deal. I was called by Northpoint about two days later to set up an appointment for installation at the end of that week. I returned their call and set up an appointment date, letting them know that I have not yet recieved my dsl modem. They stated that it should arrive the day before my installation. The equipment did arrive one day before installation, yet I was at work so I missed it. The only bad thing I experienced was that the technician for the inside wiring ran about four hours late. I contacted him with the phone number the dispatch center gave me, and he stated that he would be over shortly.
He installed the line, but the equiment which I missed had not yet come, so he left and said that northpoint would contact me on how to set it up, or they would reschedual. The equipment arrived shortly after he left and I decided to hook it up myself. I plugged the dsl modem in and it worked. The dsl modem does automatic NAT. I purchased a Linksys router but as of yet it does not work.
I am getting 1200 down and 110 up.
I am 500 feet from my CO.
So far I am pleased and I would recommend MSN.
