Just got hooked up for DSL service with MSN/Northpoint.....So far so
good, Placed initial order 2 weeks ago and service was hooked up
yesterday, in fact the telephone co was here a day earlier than they
scheduled and the Northpoint tech's arrived exactly on time for their
appointment, in fact they even arrived before my DSL modem/welcome
package arrived via Fed-Ex from MSN....
Tech's took about two hours to set up everything but after they
left the system was down for about 3 hrs...Since then it has been up
without interruption, initial speed using your speed test's ranged from
237/103 to 687/108 but after doing "tweak" tests and following
recommendations speed has since increased to 1031/110....As I said, so
far so good...I'm just waiting for the nightmares to start !!!!!

Hi,
I've just become a suscriber to Highspeed DSL service from MSN/Northpoint. They have a special $39/month service if you suscribe for a year, and you get the DSL modem free. I placed my order online on the MSN site on Nov 1st 2000, I got a call from the Northpoint tech support the week after, and they scheduled the installation for Nov 22nd, between 8AM-12PM. The technician who did the installation call me that day, telling me that he was going to be at my home around 11:00AM; he arrived at 11:15 and started the installation. He changed my phone jack, he went to the outside phone box to do some checking, then he ran some tests on the line. After that, he powered up the DSL router: it's an Arescom NetDSL 1000 ADSL router; he then installed the DSL manager software on my PC. He did not need to install a network card on my PC, since I already have one; he connected the ethernet cable from the DSL router to my NIC directly. The first time he tried to configure the router, it wasn't detec
ted. He called his tech support, and in about 10 minutes the router was detected and configured. My PC was configured to obtain an IP address automatically via DHCP. As the final step he opened the MSN
sign-off page, entered some information in there and I signed an agreement notice. The whole process took about 1 hour, and it was painless. After that I did the speed test from DSL reports, and it said that I had 256kps up/108 kbps down. Then I ran the tweak tests, and it said I needed to change some parameters on the windows registry, I did that, run the speed test again and I got 1307kbps down/110kbps up. Right now I usually get transfer speeds of 150-180KB/s !!
I think the service is great. Let's see on the long term.
