I have aliant high speed, they took over mtt mpowered. I have download speeds of 170 kb/s and according to techniciens that is too fast for my line. I get low latency and that bs about dsl getting bad over a distance is not true. I ping to new york with under 30 ms. The installation was easy because a technicien had to do it.. im too far from the co. It is ppoe but i have a router and i have it on all the time with 0 connection issues.

First off, I'm going to get the good points out of the way. They do provide DSL to rural areas Eastlink will not consider, their set up staff are somewhat competent, and the connection, if it does go down, is typically not down long.
Not a long list is it?
Now then, the bad side (Grab a coffee, this'll be a bit)
1: Their tech support are dense as posts, most of them don't even know your router needs to be programmed, or that they password locked it so you can't mess with the settings.Below is an actual account of a conversation I had.
Me: I need to access my router, can you please tell me the password?
Employee: What are you talking about sir?
Me: You password locked the router, I want to try correcting a setting so that I can send files again
Employee: The problem is on your end, not ours
Me: ... the problem happened when I joined Mpowered, It worked before, it works when I use dial up, its on your end, or the router. I've tried your PPOE solution, which you said would fix it, I had to reformat 3 times to get it off my system completely, then I had to talk to your manager so I could get switched back to NAT so I could use the internet I am paying for. I've memorized my way through network neighborhood through your help desk. You've tried, I want my turn
Employee: Sir, I don't know what you mean by access the router
Me: Dial into it, you know, Telnet 10.0.0.1
Employee: Sorry sir, I'm not sure what your..
Me: Can I please talk to a senior tech support...........
Absolute genius's. They're even more incompetent when it comes to solving your problems, it took them six months to realize that overwriting windows 95 drivers with windows 98 ones was a bad idea (I was young and foolish, sue me ^^). The wait is atrocious, and sometimes I think that they refuse to answer a call five minutes after answering a first. As for the claim that its '40 times faster then dialup' well, only if '40' means 3, and you insert a 'rarely' in front if it. Now, they are planning to switch everyone to PPOE by June if I am not mistaken, which will completely screw me over since my system does not like it. They also gave me a defunct USB - Ethernet convertor that doesn't seem to work either (not that it made things any worse) In short, if Eastlink is available to you, get it, as for those of us poor saps in rural parts of Nova Scotia, I feel sorry for all of us.And finally, as I said, outgoing connections do NOT work, you can not DCC files on Mpowered.

well what can I say.... MTT was a rock solid connection and still is in my books since I moved to cape breton back in jan/02 and ordered Mpowered with my new phone I ordered it and was supposed to get 2 months for the price of 1 but 1 day after getting modem and everything running they offered a 6 months at 22.95... I call and said hey what about me... and with no problem switched me to the much better promo.. way to go... but then late sept I loose service for 2 days call tch and they dont what's going on.. say there is a problem but they are working on it... then poof back up but went from 400+kb/s down to 100.... call again and all of a sudden.. we have capped you ppl were abusing the system so we capped everyone.... NOW THAT REALLY SUCKS!!!!!... all in all I would admit even with the cap they are solid and reliable but damnit why pay 40 per for a service that limits when the local cable does'nt.... been really thinking of switching... but in the mean time lets just hope these guy dont follow their brother's and sisters (sympatico) in the rest of the country(ont and other parts) and go PPPoe and add d/l & u/l caps like in ont for example of 5gb up and down unless you go to their higher priced 3mb service then 2x faster and 10gb up/down bit at 70 per month!!!... and since being outside the sydney are...seaside cable is starting to look nicer.. WAKE UP MTT... by the way I am less than 1km from the Co and used to get min speed tests of 2300+ now best I can hit is around 1100 on a cisco 678

Bumper from Nova Scotia
Seems to me there is alot of bashing going on and recently I to would have joined in . However having just purchased a new computer I find that most of my trouble may have been the "old 133" .I now have a 1.8 with 512megs and a new nic and speeds that are (IMHO) are top notch .I have been "mpowered" from the very first and still use their older "Paradyne" modem.
2002-11-11 08:18:51 EST: 5874 / 738 Your download speed : 5874848 bps, or 5874 kbps. A 717.1 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 738461 bps, or 738 kbps. Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
Service and reliability for me has been top notch ..... I think i'll stay Mpowered .....

I'm with MTT/Sympatico/Mpower/Aliant/whatever they want to name themselves now and i'm VERY ticked.
When I started with Mpower I signed up for a 8 megabit connection. It was 50 bucks a month. I was all happy with this speed and price per month. It was faster then most people were getting on DSL or Cable anywhere and I never found any real limits. It was about the same price as others were paying.
For about the last year or so, my Paradyne modem was acting up and would drop 2 or 3 times a day, most of the time while in a game. Tech support was useless as usual (never found any techsupport anywhre that has been useful and didn't suggest stuff I have already tried), they even sent a guy out to check my lines and everything was fine on my end. I decided that I would live with this as it was great speeds.
Then about 3 weeks ago the Paradyne modem started dropping like 15 to 20 times in one day. I got them to check to see what the problem was this time and as usual it wasn't my end. So knowing that a few local friends of mine were on newer modems that weren't dropping on them I decided to get a new one from mpower/alliant. This is where I now get pissed...
The send me a new Comtrend DSL modem and its new and nice and all. I was told that I would only notice a "slight" drop in speed.
I'm a power user and I noticed a HUGE drop in speed right away. Before I could upload and download at 100k/sec at the same time and still be able to surf webpages. Now i'm lucky to break 50k/sec TOTAL. If i'm uploading at 30k/sec the max I can download is at 20k/sec. When I try to surf while at my max speed it takes pages for ever to load up.
I called the Tech support and I told them my problem and they said that I'm now capped at 1.5megabits. He said that I should be getting more then 50k/sec but that he doubts I would ever see the speeds that I was getting before.
So my speed has been reduced to 1/8 or so of what it was and yet they still expect me to pay 50 bucks a month. I told the tech just what I thought of that.
When I signed up, I signed up for 8 megabit. When I got the new comtrend modem I never signed anything new, so I'm still signed up for the 8 megabit connection.
If they put my speed back up, i'll stick with them, if they drop the price i'm paying to equil the speed drop so that I am only paying like 10 or 15 bucks taxes in then i'll stick with them, if not I'm goin cable by the end of November.
Bottom line: MTT/Sympatico/Mpower/Aliant/whatever SUCKS. I already know 3 people that have switched over to cable modem because its now faster and cheaper then DSL in my area. I know at least 3 other people, not including me, that will be switching over to cable very soon.
**************** Just a quick update:
I went to »www.chi.speakeasy.net and did a speed test. My results were
1166 kbps for download and 398 kbps for upload
Also forgot to mention that I have had Mpower since about a year after it came out.

I've been on MPowered since fall of 2000. Back then during the speed tests from New York I'd get around 2.8 to 2.9 mb/s down 1 mb/s up. Everything was great, it was up all the time, always fast, never had a problem with them really.
Since then, in the past 2 weeks or so, its all gone down the shitter. In an effort to extend their subscription radius they've dropped the speed for ALL of thier customers, so others who previously couldn't get MPowered now can. In other words, a money grab.
Now my speed in the tests (from Boston, NYC, and others) is down to 800k/s down and 100 or so up. Make sense to you? Yet they claim to have 'INCREASED' speeds and enhanced service for their customers as a whole.
Thats a crock of bull****. Speeds have decreased, email storage has decreased, there's been more outages in the past 2 weeks than I've seen in the past 2 years, ping times which used to be sub- 120 ms to almost anywhere on the planet (can you say 110 ping to Germany?) are now in the 300's to 400's. Hell, even internet servers based in Texas which used to be 40 or 50 are now 120. I can't find a server for anything, website or game, that I ping below 100 to.
I am seriously dissappointed in them. I would really like to start a petetion going around through the customers to tell them to jack the speeds up to their previous rates (before they were uncapped. I lived within 100 feet of the subscription limit and would still get 600 k/s downloads from California servers).
And jericho, yes DSL can reach that speed easily IF it is left to reach that speed. Before MPowered used to be RADSL (Rate Adaptive Digital Subscriber Line), it was uncapped meaning it could run to the max of the line or the max of the modem, whichever it hit first. For me it was the line stopping at 2900 k/s, but the modem could reach speeds of 7168 k/s, or 7MB/s or so. Considering I lived within 100 feet of the limit and got 2.9, I'd say living closer you could EASILY break 5MB.
...But that was before, when it was a good service.
Anyone else notice how it went to crap when they switched to Aliant Telecom from MTT?

What can I say [they are great] The price $39.00 is not the price most people pay it is from $23.00 to 34.00 depending on your bundle My speed today was: »www.chi.speakeasy.net/ 2002-06-17 09:36:33 EST: 2395 / 635 Your download speed : 2395292 bps, or 2395 kbps. I am on the Cisco 678 I find that if I call 811 for tech help the IQ of the tech is about 10 points higher. Only problem I had was Eudora support . It took 3 calls to get it configured.

I have had mpowered since the middle of October of 2000 and have only had 2 problems. The first was when they changed the network card at the CO and knocked out myself and 3 other users. Called tech support and they tried the basics, resetting the modem, unplug and plug the cables back in and still no signal to the modem. Escalated to Senior tech and told to call back in the morning,(I noticed this at 3 in the morning due to my job) to find out what would be going on. Didn't even have time to call the next day when a tech was on the doorstep wanting to fix the problem.
The second was in getting emails for another person that used to have an email address that I had set up for my wife. Called Tech support and they found who it was and never got another email.
Over all, I would recommend mpowered to anyone if they can get it.
Update May 19,2002
Coming up on 18 months of service and haven't had any problems since writing the original review except downloading from cable users with the routes going to Montreal and back before making a connection. Speeds are still staying at around the 300K/sec even with 2 systems on and downloading at the same time.
