This is the worst company I've ever dealt with. For two years (I had to sign a two year contract) I suffered through a dsl connection riddled with problems, and had to deal with shoddy customer service that took up more time and resolved nothing. Finally, I tried to cancel my internet service and even that was a horror story. They charged me for two months after I canceled, and after spending over an hour on the phone with them, nothing was resolved, and they simply said my account had something 'pending' on it. I asked them to reimburse the funds they had extracted from my account AFTER MY SERVICE WAS CANCELLED and then they put my on hold, to listen to an answering machine that said it 'sincerely appreciated my patience' for another 21 minutes. I searched reviews of the company, and apparently it's not just me but they deal with every customer in this terrible fashion. I finally noticed they were suing Google Voice, it's clear they can't make money by actually providing services, but how can they just take money from credit cards, bank accounts, and sue people in order to stay in business? What a horrific swindle.

What other options did you consider for broadband:
Out here in the far sticks of NW Arizona we have one [1] choice - Frontier.
What good or bad experiences most struck you?:
The service is mediocre, the techs know less than I do, and the dependability is ... not
Further:
A couple years ago I got a phone call from their customer service in Joplin,MO. Basically the gist was that "since I had been a customer so very long [20 years], I was eligible for a new "bundle". Combined DSL and phone service for a new lower price."
Long story short - the bundle was not what it was claimed to be - and the charges ended up being MORE than they were before. I called to get an explanation and was told that the "bundle" didn't exist and that I must have been dealing with a "rogue" telemarketer. Further, since I had changed my service options, if I changed back, my rates would now be different - higher, of course.
It was interesting as I had gotten a call back number to make the actual changes of service and that number was for - wait for it - Frontier Communications, in Rochester, NY.
Frontier has pulled this before in other areas, and in New York were sued by the state for misleading practices, which resulted in a 7 million buck fine. - really makes me happy to see my telco, and ISP is so honest. [Mods: I'm not making this up ...documentation on request, . or Google: New York + Frontiernet +"Eliot Spitzer" +"false advertising"
I've been called twice more - about once a year with the same kind of fraudulent offer. The poor caller gets some hard questions, and then a somewhat explicit" NO!, thank you". This year, in the midst of my anger at the solicitation, I asked the caller where he was - he replied: Joplin, MO.The same center as the original call. Asked if it were a Frontier operated call center, he answered that it was.
Would that we had another option out here, I'd be gone in a flat second.

I have never met a company more stupid. They must only be allowed to hire people that were too dumb to get another job and that have a low IQ. Sadly, they must be worse than Comcast, and that is saying a lot. I have never had more trouble.
First, when getting the Internet hooked up, they said I needed to schedule an appointment. Then they sent me an email saying this was no longer needed. Then, the service didn't work and they signed me up for an appointment in the morning. When no one showed up and I called several times, they called me dumb for thinking that it was in the morning. Then, after calling several times because the guy never showed up, they said he might now. What type of horrible service would allow for someone to possible not show up? Do they really hire people this incompetent?
Next, I received a bill for $92.99 for services that were supposed to be combined with Direct TV in a bundle, but they didn't tell me it would be automatically billed to my credit card, which I have no idea how they have this information. Then, the person on the other line though it was no big deal that I had these issues, as though they were normal, and she had an attitude with me because I was upset that no one informed me that I received two bills, not just one, and they decided to merge several bills together without telling me in advance.
Every single per I have encountered from this company is a complete moron and must not be educated past high school. They have trouble just changing call lines. I have never had such poor service and am definitely disappointed in such performance. I would not be surprised if they go under because they are too stupid to know any better.
Worst service ever.

Frontier just installed new copper over the winter - in doing so they're offering DSL in my area now. First and foremost when I called I was told they could offer me a 3mb down / 1mb up service. I was a little miffed they were charging a install fee but whatever real broadband in this area so I was excited. Well shortly after and before the install I saw online it showed potentially 7mb service for my address / phone number. So I called back to double check - that person was ABSOLUTELY USELESS! I gave her my confirmation number and my internet account number (both given to me during the first call) and she couldn't tell me ANYTHING. She didn't see the order in the system, she couldn't confirm what service was available - it was nothing short of pathetic.
So now I'm getting that bad gut feeling. The tech comes out on time - he was nice - but no offense an old school phone guy - he knew VERY little about data networks. He tells me they can only offer 1mb service - ok chalk up yet another disappointment to the experience. We get everything setup in about 30 minutes and I'm off. From the day the service was installed - to the time I'm writing this review (literally 6 days) the DSL modem has disconnected and reconnected over 100 times!!! When the connection is up its not bad almost a full mbit down - Xbox Live plays great - 3 green bars in COD BlackOps - but too bad the connection won't stay up for more than 5 minutes at a time!
I've called tech support every single day since its been installed, same old BS every call (power off the modem, are you using wireless, blah blah blah) they sent me a new modem - but that didn't change anything the problem persists. Finally today I demanded a tech come out. He's scheduled to be here in two days. I'll update my post then but as of now STAY CLEAR OF FRONTIER! I can't wait when they try billing me for a service that doesn't work.
With 14 years of IT and network experience I'm certain the issue is the signal margin on the line - coming in at a whopping 6dB. I'm hoping they'll just use a 2nd pair in hopes to raise the margin - but we'll see if its not too much trouble for them to punch down another set of wires
FWIW pings are in the 60ms range, Jitter is low (normally less than 5ms) however peak bandwidth is lacking and of course reliability is NON EXISTENT.
UPDATE: Took 4 calls and finally demanded a tech come out. Tech basically said the new copper they JUST installed is too small gauge to provide proper voltage / signal for my distance from the CO (4 miles). Basically there is nothing they can do for me. As a last ditch effort I tried a Netgear DSL modem - read many reviews about it being able to hold the line better with services having low signal margin. Did not work - DSL keeps disconnecting up to 100 times a day. On the phone now canceling. What a waste of time and money. Frontier you lost potential sales because you wanted to save a few bucks throwing the cheapest cable you could in the ground.

$40/mo for 1.5 mbps / 384 kbps service. Ridiculous. Pings jump from 40 ms during non-peak hours to 600-800 ms during peak hours. Speeds similarly go from 1.3 mbps / 320 kbps to 0.5 mbps / 200 kbps. Tech support is utterly worthless. I'm still using Epix/Jack Flash DSL equipment so I'm not sure of equipment quality with Frontier, but complete crap wouldn't surprise me. Frontier refuses to upgrade archaic infrastructure.
Unless you have no other options (like me) avoid Frontier at all costs.

Let me start off in a nutshell. Frontier sucks! There is no other way to say it! We pay for a 1MB a second connection speed. At the first month of service, connection was great. No problems. Then the unthinkable happend. BOOM, Connection drops, slow speeds, and no way to fix it. I have an Xbox with Xbox Live. I am an avid gamer, who enjoys games every night.(at least I did when Verizon still ran the company) Now when I attempt to play a game, my BlackOps says I get yellow to red connection. My HaloReach says in a red box(WARNING) on my network status. I did a speed test that the same frontier representitive did while remote accessing my computer. When he did it, it showed only a .30 % connection DL speed. When I did the same test on my own, my ping was 890MS, my DL speed was .1, and my Upload speed was .4. Our network now desides that whenever it wants to, it disconects our laptops for a split second, and then it comes back on. This happens frequently, so downloads are impossible! This connection is FAR from the 1MB promised by the contract. We are considering ending our contract tonight, and ridding of frontier forever.
BOTTOM LINE! DONT GET FRONTIER. FOR ANYTHING! IT IS USELESS, AND THEY WILL FEED YOU EXCUSES ABOUT WHY IT IS HAVING PROBLEMS.( ITS YOUR COMPUTER NOT OUR EQUIPMENT, WE CANT PROMISE ANY SPEEDS, WERE WORKING ON IT, THERE IS STORMS IN THE AREA, and they have told me this one before and I quote, "When Verizon had the old lines, and we bought the company, the equipment that we got from them was very slow and outdated.")

We had Epix internet services until Frontier bought them out a few years ago. The speeds basically stayed the same while rates went up. Last October our old modem stopped working (it was nearly 8 years old). A Frontier tech came and gave us a new Siemens. First off, it's a junk modem to begin with. You can't bridge it to your existing router, so you're stuck having to deal with another router on your network. Port 80 on it is open by default on the Siemens modem, which is extremely insecure considering anyone scanning on Frontier's IP Range can get in to your network if they know the default username/password for the modem...which isn't hard to guess (I think it's admin/admin or something similar).
I already have a Linksys router set up, and you can't really use the port forwarding option on it since it's connected to the Siemens. However, a trick I found is to -Log into the Siemens gateway -Set the DMZ to your router's IP. -That way your router is facing the internet just like a typical setup.
On the reliability end I have to give them an A+ though. It's never gone out since Frontier took over, even during snow and ice storms. Only when our modem broke it went out, not their fault (or maybe they just wanted us to get the new modem). I use OpenDNS so I can't account for their DNS reliability.
A few years ago when I didn't really know what DNS was, our router reset after a storm and I needed the DNS addresses again. I called their tech support and simply asked what those numbers were. They were completely clueless and I was on the phone for over an hour and a half, transferred to three different departments until someone from Frontier was able to tell me their DNS numbers. Most of the techs over-the-phone are clueless, some denied the fact I needed DNS and instead had me use Command Prompt to attempt to bring the connection up (it was not ipconfig anything).
I realized their AUP states a 5GB monthly cap. We're paying $44.95/month for DSL alone. Comcast is in this area, provides speeds 12x faster for $3 less, and has a 250GB cap. I don't know who Frontier thinks they are but they're pretty much running themselves into the ground.
Their Twitter support is nice to have, but unfortunately unless Frontier- 1) Changes to an all fiber infrastructure, and 2) Lowers rates, there's no future hope for this company. Since they're frequently the only provider in some areas, they think they can get away with their pathetic infrastructure. I don't know how they're going to support the newly divested Verizon FiOS markets.
----- 4/01/10
Speeds are still the same. Pings are minimally 60ms, 40ms to the first hop. Frontier is still a poor service with little to no chance of being improved. --- 4/19/11
Switched to Comcast last October and have not had any issues. Frontier AFAIK is still a joke in terms of speed.

They continue to sell services without any real investments to link into the little fiber in the area. They need to cap some areas as Verizon did that can't handle anymore higher bandwidth or get into the area to start fixing the problems. Dialing for dollars is not helping western N.C. grow Spoke to local district manager yesterday and today the speed seem to have improved.
Comments:
 | | Slow your roll! Hold on now you said cap! So what just happened was exactly what they want! Because Frontier would rather insist on Cap's and overages. When its not the heavy users that caused this problem. The problem was caused by overselling their network past 10:1, or even 5:1.
I do honestly think that Frontier will be running scared when LTE becomes more prevalent and affordable when users shift to a "usable" LTE service. | |
| | | | Re: Slow your roll! I understand many think LTE is Verizons end game to come back into these areas with LTE but what happens until then. My cap comment is for Frontier to stop trying to sell 3mb service to everyone one who picks up a phone. Verizon had a two tier program which seemed to work better than sign everyone up and hope they don't sign on at the same time. I feel they are way past the 10:1 ratio now. I'm against capping heavy users as they are not the problem here. Frontiers dialing for dollars has created this problem | |
| | | | | Re: Slow your roll! The District Manger called and told me the fix would take a couple weeks(more bandwidth down for western N.C.) but would try to solve some of the problem ASAP. I want to be fair so lets see if the walk follows the talk. I hope. | |
| | | | | | Re: Slow your roll! This is a canned response from frontier. Im in rochester NY and they downgraded our service from 7 mbps to (barely) 3 mbps... real world more like 1.5 mbps for the same money we were paying for the fabled 10 mbps!
Make no mistake. They are overselling, they are a fraud, and you will not see any reasonable speed increases. | |

I had no choices. I live outside a small town, so basic (local only) phone service would be useless. It was either that or the whole deal with all the bells and whistles (Verizon Freedom Essentials with all options) for $60 (59.56) --no in-between. With that, I could have their top tier DSL for $20.00. There was supposed to be free installation. They charged me $130.00 for it. When I called, they said that charge wasn't there. My bank account disagrees.
Like everyone else, I've had dial-up speeds. I started a Speed Wave at »www.speedtest.net/wave/b97be2ea71b82009 and am hoping you all will participate. It's called "WNC Frontier" by Corin. I'm thinking this is a good way to document the situation. I'm in the process of filing a complaint at ww.ncdoj.gov. and I hope all of you are doing the same.

Worst ISP I have ever had. Speeds are slower than a dial-up connection a lot of the time in Jasper/Fairmount Ga. area. Understaffed and undertrained technicians. Tech support on-line or via land line is pitiful at best. If there is a problem it takes weeks if not months to be resolved. Avoid them if at all possible. Unfortunately I am in an area that is deemed to be an "Independent Area" by the FCC so no other provider can get in this area.
