I live in Monroe, my phone number is (845)782 and Frontier told me I'm not eligible for DSL. Big disappointment, considering their Web site leads you to believe you're eligible DSL!

    My Other Reviews·State Telephone
Overall I am happy with Frontier Lightning Links. When they go down they are down for like 12-20 hours at a time. Singe Dynamic I/P which has stayed up as much as 10-15 days at a time. I am using Windows Internet Sharing and it is working great on my small network.

Yes Road runner may be a tad faster, but the cable company here is so arrogant that when it comes to customer support there is none! Thats one big reason that I got DSL! Another reason it's $7 cheaper. So far I am satisfied with Frontier.

It's now been 2 weeks and I am even more satisfied! I am getting D/L speeds of more than 2.5 MB/Sec (in short bursts) I never got that with RR.

Update: I got upgraded to 3 MB/sec for no charge. I am really enjoying my speeds! I can get it up to a steady 3.7 MB/sec. on downloads.

I've had great experiences with Frontier. However in Western Wisconsin there are a few issues. First of all the only modem you can use is the Nortel Networks modem the rent to you. The modem is not configurable, so you can't set it up as a router for multiple computers. Also there is no option to setup the service and home equipment yourself. The contract to have a technician from CompUSA come to your house and install the filters and modem (which I ended up doing most of anyway). The fact that you can't use other DSL modems bothers me the most. I work for an ISP in MN that provides DSL through QWest and I think their equipment is far superior. Using Cisco 675 modems those of us who know what we're doing can configure various features such as routing. And the price of renting the modem through Frontier is over $8/month.

Other than those two things I have had no complaints. I guess we could all use lower prices though.

I have been getting good speed for my area - usually about 650 d/l and 105 u/l. So far I am very happy with the service over all.

The service is new in northwest Iowa and I was pleased when Frontier called me to tell me they now offered DSL. I had previously asked to be notified when available. I ordered the service and was given a date and time for install and both the Comp USA and Frontier techs were right on time. We set up the DSL modem, hooked it to my SMC Barricade, made the changes to the router(fixed IP, Gateway and DNS servers) then rebooted the router and everything was working great on my home network. Originally I read that Frontier used a dynamic IP with a special login screen. I was extremely please to find out I got a fixed IP address and no special login screens. Been running for 5 days with no problems and have seen speeds range from 600-800K down and 400-500 up which surprised me as I was told it would be 1 meg down and 128K up. So far I can say I am extremey pleased with the installation and the functionality. I have not had a need to call tech support yet.

The original speed ordered was 1 Mb down but during light traffic times I'm able to average 2.3 Mb and have seen up to a steady 5 Mb on very, very large downloads. During high traffic times I'm able to average between 1.3-1.5 Mb at 15,300 ft from my CO. I recommend self-install option if you know what you're doing. As I write this, I've been logged on 1110 hrs only because Frontier performed network maintenance, otherwise it would have easily been double that time. Only once in the past year have I been affected by a network problem and that lasted for about six hours. My dynamic IP address has changed only a handful of times in the last five months. I'm more than pleased with their service.

$250 for install. No self install option available when I ordered. After the 20+% taxes and tarrifs on the luxury item of telephone service (don't forget the 3% Spanish American war tax too) the install bill was over $300.

No choice of ISP. I could have free ISP from QWEST but the only service you can uese with Frontier LightningLink (their name for DSL) is Frontiernet (theirs) or AOL.

    DSL is $39.95
    ISP is $14.95
    after taxes total is $57.69/month

Reliability was poor at first but has gotten much better. I rate them as good now.

They used to only give you 1 mail box. They recently increased it to two I think.

Customer service is fair. When there is an outage an 800 number usually has the correct status. It is comforting to know that they are aware of the problem at least. If/when you have to speak with a rep don't expect too much.

Not responsive at all to requests for increased ISP alliances.

Uses Dynamic IB but my address usually remains the same for weeks at a time.
Download generally about 700K Upload generally 128K
Install price included a Cisco single port router

When I tried to order they insisted that is wasn't available in my area. Month after month I checked and they gave me the same story. One day the guy across the street from me tells me he has DSL from them. I call and again they tell me I can't have service in my area. When I confront them about my neighbor they put me on hold for 5 minutes then finally come back with "Oh yes, I guess you can have service". I would have ordered MONTHS earlier if they had had a clue.

"Love it!"

Ordering was painless. Sales people were good. Took frontier one and 1/2 weeks to come do the engineering survey to see if I'd qualify, instead of the three weeks they initially said it would. But then I couldn't get the modem, as they were back-ordered and had to wait anyway. The self install I did was a piece of cake. If you have any computer ability and can follow directions, it's a no brainer. It would be nice if they'd mail you the equipment instead of making you go to CompUSA to pick it up, and the pick-up hours are very limited compared to the stores hours.

frontier won't guarantee any certain speed, but after a registry tweak, I'm getting about 720 down, 85 up. Not too bad. But I'm hoping I can improve it further.
