their service was not, is not, and seems like it NEVER will be worth the cost. They treat new customers nice, till you sign the contract, then the become crap and do some of the most abusive, outrageous things I have ever seen a business do. If you join ACD.net you are going to be sorry, real fast!

Flames?? Try Truth

I posted a close to "flame" review because i can honestly say i have had experience with ACD.net as a company since it's inception as a CLEC and the start of its DSL service into the market.

When ACD Started offering DSL, they were IT! They had the best service, decent prices, and you could actually call them and talk to them.

about 2 years into their offering DSL, my friend bought into a 2 year contract with them to get a free modem. At that time, i could literally get exactly what he paid for. they pings were 40-50 on game servers, which blew away my ATTBi cable, the upload was great, which helped make it worth it and the DNS resolves were quick. All in all great service.

My friend however pulled out of his 2 year contract 1 year and 3 months into it. He said that he was fed up with downtimes, and nobody there to do anything about them at late hours of the night.

I bought into ACD about 5 months after he left them, due to it was all i could get :P they do have wonderful technology that allows for VERY far reaches from the CO. Up to 30,000 ft actually.

The problem is this. when i first got them, i pinged 60's to game servers and go a consistent 716kbps down.

Now i get about 100 pings to servers and about 400kbps down.

Their network IS oversold. I can vouch that they run almost 80% utilization of their router 24/7. The friggin first hop away is almost always 45ms-70ms!!!!!!!!

I would stay away from ACD.Net, just my friendly advice. They are WAY oversold, and not willing to do anything about it. unfortunately, for a small company like this, if they are turning a profit NOT delivering what the say to their customers, why would they loose money to deliver the goods..

My contact is up. Im moving. and i will not move my ACD with me. Byebye guys. thanks for the broken promises and slow speeds.

i look FORWARD to the comcast guy coming Friday.

Re: Flames?? Try Truth

Dear joel07022002,

Well I am coming around to your view and do not want to have you upset as I did NOT say you were flaming or anything, however, I will say a calmly written evaluation will go much longer to inform others, now on to ACD:
It appears you are correct on the report you have filed, as the most they do to check complaints is to check DSLAMs and thats it. I have had one of their techs sitting right where I am now (at the computer) with multiple speed tests running, and he could NOT even come close to the "rated" speeds I am PAYING FOR! I have in the last few months been logging all speed data, as well as putting several other speed tests on this to have evidence that I am NOT getting what I am paying for --- so, in essence, I think given the DSL competition is better in the area, and this ISP is not providing what it says it can, I suspect customers are bailing, and I might be the next unless they can get these speeds to what they say they are!

The "NEW" ACD.net

I know this is an old review, but as an avid broadband lover here in Jackson I keep a closeful eye to the status of all of our providers. ACD.net as shown in this review did have some growing problems, and due to these reviews everytime when I shopped to get the best deals on service I always strayed far from them. They have this utility on their website (if you access it with IE on Windows, I'm on OS X so I have to work around to get to it) and it lets you trace route addresses from it, ping websites, or ping their backbone connections. A few months ago I did some heavy checks on this and they were always 35-40ms to their backbones which was/is terrible, but lately they've beefed up their advertising campaign so I decided to check again and their network looks beautiful (how geeky of me ) their routers aren't constantly running at full capacity, their pings to their backbones and outside sites are great, they have less hops to almost any site then I do from my SBC Yahoo! connection and their prices are great! I can't wait for ACD.net to introduce ADSL2+ in Jackson & Michigan Center. I just wanted to update this so that those who are considering them don't stray like I did.

Installation was delayed the because of work that AT&T had yet to perform, and I wasn't informed until the morning ACD's tech was supposed to be onsite, (after I had taken the morning off of work.

A week later the tech finally made it out, performed installation, helped with some of the crappy phone wiring in my house, but after visiting the CO, informed me that the loop-length was significantly larger than originally estimated, and I'd only be able to get 3Mbps instead of 8-12 that I was originally provided.

Needed to contact tech support again that evening, they hadn't finished completing setup on their end.

Decided I was going to cancel, but kept service for a week while signing up for Comcast. After canceling ACD.net, was charged $150 ETF. After calling and explaining why I was canceling (low speed due to poor loop length estimate, mostly), billing support tried to justify it by saying they still have to support the line that AT&T installed. They only offered to reduce the fee.

Even after I agreed to this, they attempted to charge my credit card the full ETF and price of the modem.

Internet on Ann Arbor is always the worst

When I lived in N. Maple Rd, Ann Arbor in 2000, the fastest I can get is IDSL 144kbps line. Few years later, I moved to Ypsilanti where I could get 1.5M/128k by SBCGlobal. Now, my cousin still lives there, and he say the situation doesn't change much. Only Comcast cable can provide higher bandwidth. All xDSL are inferior than cable due to long range.

Had residential DSL service from AT&T for over two years and was ready to
switch to a local MI company for better customer service when I had a
problem. Decided to switch to ACD.net for my DSL service.

Big mistake. Signed up for service in late November 2012. Never received
service through ACD.net. Called tech support numerous times trying to get
any kind of help. They were helpful on the phone, but simply never
followed up with actual service support. Never received a call back from
tech support despite continual promises to make progress toward hooking up
my service.

Tech comments went like this "Wow, this CO [branch office] is a real mess,
can't figure out where your card or port is", or "OK...I'm not sure what
the answer is on that, I will call you back" followed by no calls.

However, when I finally gave up in early February and told them I was
canceling, the billing department gave me my first call back from ACD.net,
accusing me of breaking my contract and demanding February's payment even
though the due date wasn't even close yet. Once they heard that I had
received no service yet, they became less aggressive and gave the
Accounting Department my case. The Accounting Department blamed me for the
lack of service for the first two months and kindly decided to keep the
first two months of payments that I had made as long as I returned their
modem.

Switched back to AT&T and was back online before the end of the day. I
don't really like my AT&T service that much; but ACD.net made them look
rather attractive and reliable. The customer service reps at AT&T might be
in some other country, but at least they are courteous and will follow up.

**UPDATE**

Returned to ACD.net after getting sick of AT&T and their new caps and overages. Getting ~19MB down and 1.1MB up. AT&T was only 6MB down on a good day. ACD.net is a better value, has a small town feel to the company, and everyone I have interacted with there seems nice. Only reason I left them for AT&T in the first place was a tech issue that could not be resolved and was preventing me from accessing remote files at school. Just wish they would become the next sonic.net for Michigan!

--------------------------------

Sick of Comcast's crap and increasing prices with decreasing quality I ordered ACD.net's newest deal for MSU students. They offer a 10Mb connection directly to MSU with MSU as the ISP. It is just like being on campus. The deal was 19.95 for 6 months then 39.95 for the remainder of the contract. Speeds are close to advertised. I get well over 10Mb when d/l from sites like Microsoft and I get some that are way slower, it all depends on the traffic out on the web. To get the great speeds I had to rewire my home phone lines with CAT 5 but it was worth it. The install was fast. I ordered online and received my equipment in 2 days. Plugged it in and got a status light. Don't know if it is because the previous owners of my house had DSL or not (I just bought this house 2 years ago) but they may have. Had to contact ACD after installing because speeds were really slow. They checked and said they had to dial me up. They did and away I went. After rewiring the house the speeds increased even more. Other than the one call to tech support no other problems. That call went well and the tech was polite and friendly. Occassional outages that last between 5 minutes and 30 minutes but don't happen often. Difficult to tell if outages are related to MSU or ACD. ACD will also send out emails notifying users of service outages due to service or equipment upgrades.

Don't like that I have to have auto credit card payment as I like to pay with various sources (ie: checking, savings, credit card) depending on my circumstances that month. Also don't like having to sign contracts. Cable modem did not require a contract.

All in all a very good company and a good service to get.

Ok where to start. I moved into lansing about a year ago and started searching for a good isp. Comcast was my first choice but after they lied to me about there service and charged far to much for what i was getting i cancelled there service. A friend told me about acd.net so i figured i would give them a try. I orderd the 1 year 20m dsl with phone service. within a few weeks it was installed and running great. There up time is very good and there email alerts to outages upgrades are awsome. I get around 17meg connection out of a 20 meg possible and that is great. There phone service on the other hand i dont like as well. I can here the weird computer sounds thru my handset and i also drop calls to a direct dial tone. There caller id system dose give me the phone number but for some reason dosent give me a name for who is calling.

My only complaint is that this isp is horrible with upgrades. After about a year of almost perfect service i ask for an upgrade. This process was started in june of 2010 and it is the end of october now and still i do not have what i wanted. There seems to be a ton of confusion in there customer support department. When they speak with you they seem a bit confused and dont always know whats going on with your account. The actual people there are very nice i just think there inner comunication needs work.

bottom line.... acd has great up time free wifi for anyone that is downtown plus a backup dial up account. I would go with them in a heartbeat altho make sure you order what you want the first time so you dont need to go thru the hassle with there customer support the way it is.

"I've had ACD's 'up to 20Mbs' for 2.5months now running side by side with AT&T's 6Mbs which I've had for many years. I was noticing AT&T slowing down to 2.5-3Mbs every night during peak usage and wanted to find something a little better for 3 users that can burn a lot of bandwidth watching streaming media in the evening.

I've been quite pleased with ACD thus far. My modem stays synced up around 16Mbs down and 1.1Mbs up all the time. If they do maintenance it seems to be during the wee hours of the morning which doesn't effect me with my current schedule. I really wanted to 'try them out first' and they signed me up for month to month at their contract price. They didn't mention there being an option for self install otherwise I would have done that as I had already run a drop from the bell box into the network room on the new line.

The modem is a Zhone 6211 I3 with the default IP 192.168.1.1 which has a web browser configuration. Out of the box it functions as only a modem but does have NAT/DHCP capabilities if you enable them.(download the manual for setup info)

Really the only complaint I have about ACD's network is around 25ms higher latency than AT&T but their bandwidth more than makes up it especially during prime time. I really don't see a hit in throughput during peak in the evening like I do on AT&T. Off peak I can download a file at 1.6MBs and the same during peak, where AT&T would really struggle at some points at night.

So far it's looking pretty good for me and I'm quite pleased to be helping out a local business. I'll make a point of updating from time to time.

5.15.10 In the last month or so they have updated whatever was slow in their network and ping times are on par with AT&T or better. I haven't had any real issues with ACD and no down time that i've noticed. Things are looking better!

5.27.10 Connection rocked for a week or so but now it's as bad or worse than before.

Stay away from ACD !! I read this forum before subscribing ACD and the reviews are true. I thought that was old reviews and ACD has changed. IT IS NOT !

This company has a lot of problem and not professional. The reasons are:

(1) They build the system on a junk/cheap network interface. I got 3 Zhone modems and all bad and I replaced it with D-Link. Their system can't sustain 24-hours high data transfer rate for my research from MSU to home, almost everyday I call ACD to reset my connection to restore the speed. It means that the problem is not my modem. They have swap their modem twice and they acknowledge that they have bad interface.

(2) They often stop & go by blocking data flow. I have constant data backup for my research from MSU and my data is huge, 10GB per day and sometimes can reach 30 GB. With 6 mbps contract, I only got 4.8 - 5.2 mbps (600-700 KBytes/sec), it means 1 GB for 20-30 minutes. I don't use sharing network and this connection is strictly secured from 1 server at MSU to home (using SSH). I can see ACD blocking/throttling my transfer because I tested the server is not blocking/slowing when I accessed from other server. At the end, when I terminated my contract, I got only 0.8 Mbps (90 Kbytes/sec) ! This time was my angry time with ACD.

(3) Bad Courtesy. No grace period to clean my email accounts. I did not specified date to terminate but please give a week notice! Finally, after 6 months with them I terminated the contract and because bad service complaints they let me go without penalty. Actually, get rid this bandwidth hog !

(4) My employer is also using ACD and it is a nightmare ! Web service (server) they provided is a junk (no PHP/MySQL). Only for a moron using their service (our IT guy is not really IT, more like data management person). And also is robbing my employer (on invoice $150/month for dedicated server but actually it is not dedicated and web space limitted to 2GB !!). I have told them to quit ACD ! and now is in process transferring to a new server and new look for our web.

(5) Right now, my neighbor is very kind to let me use their Wi-Fi on Comcast, and I get 1.2 MBytes/sec (>10Mbps!) download speed. Next week, I will be on AT&T again ($35/month vs $70+ for Comcast), it is a slow speed deal, only 1.5 Mbps, it means for 24 hrs I will get 11 GB, and it is ok. If I really need data now, I can tap my neighbor or just transfer it while I'm on campus.

Stay away from ACD.net !

ps. Fortunately, I was on customer account web at the time they erased my secondary emails account, right before closing main account I sent FVCK YOU to all ACD support team on my longest complaint (120 threads that subscribed by all). Maybe next mission is to put bumper sticker on my car "FVCK ACD !"

Value for money:

I live in the Jackson service area. After 5 years of Ameritech -> SBC -> AT&T disservice, and when the AT&T/NSA information rape became public, I searched for an alternate provider. ACD's DSL prices are simply comparable, & a little worse if phone bundling is not taken into account. Though they advertise a reduced price for some initial months, their accounting needs a nudge to get it set up correctly.

I ordered ACD 5/512&750 DSL & phone bundle 15 days prior to moving to a new home. After 10 days ACD notified me that AT&T had installed and VERIFIED a working DSL/POTS line at the new address. When inspecting the premises I found that AT&T had terminated the line in an existing splice block (NOT a Network Interface) at the roof line, TWENTY feet from the ground. I complained to ACD only to be told that AT&T wasn't required to install an NI (in a pig's eye!). I told them if they didn't get an NI the contract would be terminated for breach. They promised to "interface" with AT&T and find their story. No one contacted me for several days, and no rework had been done, and no service had yet been provided, however, ACD charged my credit card. What's more, they charged me the full price, not the marketed price. To their accounting department's credit , they did return the payment and suspend account charges until the NI issue was resolved. And indeed, if not for their accounting department (who seems to be the only entity at ACD realizing that they need to provide services in order to make money) the NI issue may never have been noticed within the company.

Fearing the loss of revenue, they got AT&T to place an NI. Unfortunately, the AT&T tech (out of stupidity or spite) placed the NI where the splice box had been -- TWENTY feet off the ground, and the interface was left without a ground wire connection. I contacted ACD and the tech told me that there is no requirement for AT&T to place an NI, let alone where to place it (the pig's other eye!). I told him that AT&T's own policies and the National Electrical Code state in no uncertain terms where NI's are to be placed, and that they must be grounded. The ACD tech seemed ignorant and lazy beyond belief, and tried the old he's doing me a favor listening to me routine, and he told me they have no control over AT&T even if they are ACD's regulated contractor. At this point (which was going on 25 days since ordering the service) I asked to speak with his supervisor. He asked me to hang on, then he returned to the line and told me he would "go out of [his] way" and make a complaint to AT&T and the MPSC even though he wasn't "obligated", and he said, "I PROMISE I'll get back with you today!" I never heard from him again.

I was sorely tempted to dump ACD right then and go back to AT&T (there's not much choice here), but I knew that AT&T can provide similar frustration. Lucky for me, in forwarding all communications to ACD's accounting, at least some movement was happening there. In the meantime, I filed an MPSC compaint. Usually the MPSC is the useless whore of the utility industries, but they did do a pit bull routine on ACD, and stated that no one in all of the MPSC's years and offices had EVER seen an NI placed by the roof line TWENTY feet from the ground. ACD sent a technician out to check the NI position and give an opinion. He conceded that it "present[ed] a hazard" because it had been placed only inches from the power supply drop line splices, but he said nothing concerning its location otherwise. The MPSC contacted AT&T business office reps who said that they could easily move the NI down and ground it, ACD simply had to call and ask (see where this is centering around ACD's competence, expertise, and management).

Finally, after 34 days, the AT&T business offices ordered the same AT&T tech who put the NI TWENTY feet up and another tech (both highly paid cable repair technicians) AND their supervisor (a highly paid manager) to move it down and ground it. They were angry for having to redo the work, did not apologize, and would not look me in the eyes. When they left the "supervisor" stated, "Your all set", and they left immediately.

You might wonder if that is the end. Ha HA! You might think that an AT&T "supervisor" would be wise enough to follow the Cardinal Rule of Installation and Repair for telco technicians -- CHECK FOR DIAL TONE AT THE NETWORK INTERFACE. Ha HA!

The "supervisor", who had helped by doing the wiring in the box... hooked up the wrong drop wire pair. They left without checking DSL or dial tone. Having done this work before, I located the service on the other drop wire pair, but hell, even being SO CLOSE, I wasn't going to let ACD off the hook. I made another complaint and the next day the previous ACD tech came out and switched the regulated drop wire pair. All this in only 35 days and less than a mile from the Central Office.

And you think THAT is the end? Ha HA HAAA! ACD provided a Zhone (formerly Paradyne) wireless gateway router (6218-I2-xxx). This is a quality product with good performance but the documentation for this product is minimalistic. If you follow the instructions and let the product do an automatic "Quick Setup" on ACD's line, you will connect to the internet, but it will set itself up in Bridge mode and disable NAT and Firewall functionality. If you're into home networking, you know that this setup is impossible for LAN functioning (file & print sharing and LAN SSH), as even if you can connect up to four machines to the internet, the addresses are all exterior and dynamic making it impossible to communicate with other machines in the (now non-existent) local network. ACD "Tech Support" reps had "no clue" (THEIR words) whatsoever about how to utilize the product for LAN functions. They actually told people to forget about using the LAN functions or to use the product solely as a modem and buy another SOHO router to run behind it! A huge waste of resources!

Ha HA Ha HAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Zhone tech support is helpful if you can get through to them. Unfortunately, Zhone's business model is that ACD is their customer, and you, the end user, are NOT their customer. To try and help though, Zhone reps wrote emails and made calls to ACD , both tech support and the Owner of ACD. They received no replies whatsoever. ACD's support site (and don't even get me started on their Phone service's indefinitely beta web site!) apparently hasn't been updated since Ameritech was the local Bell (before SBC bought them and later bought AT&T) -- 5 years at least. You will not find ANY, AT ALL, current and relevant information. You WILL get a laugh where they say the "Techs" get asked by people all the time about the best equipment to use (the pig's bum!!). You will not find ANY information concerning the technical details for setting up DSL provisions in a modem or gateway (and it is not for the average customer to figure out these things). Interestingly enough, I was able to use my former 2Wire gateway router (provided by AT&T - sheesh!) to discover the correct DSL settings for ACD (at least in Jackson):

1) Update the firmware from the Zhone support site

2) Delete any WAN setup the product has set up

3) Set up a new WAN connection with VP/VCI 0-35, UBR w/o PCR, QoS,

MAC Encapsulation Routing (MER), LLC-Snap Bridging, obtain all addressing

(unless you bought a static address), enable NAT & Firewall & IGMP & WAN,

Service Name pppoe_0_35_1

4) Save & Reboot the Zhone

You can then configure your NAT, Firewall, & LAN functions.

To summarize, while the DSL & phone services themselves are fairly stable, the DSL service is not the fastest that it could be for the money. The majority of ACD service personnel are ignorant of their products and services. Even though I loath AT&T, you can get bundled 7+ DSL for $10 less per month than ACD. ACD doesn't commit itself to improving functions; and it's interesting to note that while they sell DSL claimed at 10 and 20, they only bundle phone service with 3 & 5. ACD's management and tech support, for the most part, are ignorant, rude, and atrocious -- and that's being generous. I had hoped to start a long term relationship with a company that wasn't AT&T, but the owner doesn't seem to be interested in this, and ACD's manner and performance reveal this. One more note on the age of their web site information... One might get the impression that ACD is still the broadband provider for Michigan State University. They LOST that contract some time ago, and the reason(s) seem fairly obvious. If ACD doesn't turn around and start to kiss my Customer's bum, I'll be switching at the end of term.

I signed up with ACD.net in summer of 2005 for the MSU DSL plan, offering 10mbps. After signing up, they had SBC come out and install the telephone line almost immediately. However, after that install, they fell off the face of the planet and I could not reach anyone. I stopped by their office and learned that they had mailed me the modem and self-setup kit. I received it the following day and installed everything, but things still did not work. I called ACD.net back and they sent out a tech on a Saturday (!) - I was starting to be impressed. He told me, we'd get 9mbps and we were good to go. Life was good.

During the entire summer we had horrible connectivity issues and ACD.net. We could not play any games because after approx. 15 minutes of usage the connection would drop and have to reconnect. I called many many times and they always told me it was fixed, but it never was. Fortunately, I got Rusty Allswede's (their DSL guru) email address and telephone number. I called him and he seemed to fix my reliability issues.

It was too good to last. Now, about every 2-3 weeks, i have to call/email Rusty to get him to fix my connection after it reverts into this 15 minutes of usage/goes down pattern. Of course, I can't call him at night or on weekends (which is ALWAYS when it goes down). Frankly, I'm just fed up at this point. On Christmas Eve, I could not use my internet connection. I'm trying to run server applications through my connection and I just can't take it anymore.

I really really WANT to see ACD.net do well and I really really WANT to support a small local company. I've been patient and understanding, but I need to get business done and I just can't do it with ACD.net. They could solve so many of their problems by just having a tech (or an MSU intern) work during the nights and make sure their servers stay up.

Follow-up

I'd like to follow up to my prior post regarding ACD.net

Their services has improved remarkably in the last few months. I haven't had any reliability issues in several months now and I have a pretty solid and fast 24/7 connection.

I'm sure their tech support is still a mess, but at least they keep things running now.
