UPDATE (BIG BOLD PRINT): Went into ACD.Net's office the other day to cancel my service, i had already vacated my old house and moved into the new one. Come to find out, i HAVE to pay for another months of service, because as i quote them "It was in your contract that you have to give a 30 days notice of disconnection", which is utter bullshit. I have read the contract i signed 2 years ago, and it does not ever state anywhere that i owe them 30 days notice of disconnection.

STAY AWAY FROM ACD.NET!! STAY FAR AWAY!!!!! please read the rest of my review for the saga that was my customer experience of acd.net:

After ordering a T1 line from a local company (Control Room Technologies) on april 26th, and waiting 3 months without service, 4 attempts to locate my location, 4 lost orders, and then hearing that Ameritech had to rewire the entire city practicaly to deliver my T1, i canceled that order. After dealing with them, anything could be better.

Order was placed on July 3rd, one day before the 4th. So i gave them over the weekend to get the order in place. I called them July 7th to check on the order, and i was transfered to a mailbox for the DSL Order Coordinator. I left a message and did not recieve a call back until 4 days later. My Firm Order Confirmation date (FOC) was July 17th. I bought my modem on the 15th, after the line was installed by SBC. Brought it home and hooked it up, and got no activity. One call to tech support, 15 minutes later i was on the web.

Speed wise, i have my gripes, but this is not ACD's fault, this is my apartment complex's problem. Their in-building wiring was installed in 1947, and is not a multi-stranded coper wire. It is Single Stand 18gua wire. I have had techs come out and check my connection, and at the DMARC for my building, they get full speed, however my speeds are about 487Kbps down and 226Kbps up. My service level is 960K/256k.

The great thing about ACD is they have worked with me on my speed. My order was for 768K SDSL, and after i ordered they changed their offerings to make my line 960K SDSL. They also now offer ADSL, with upstreams of 256K. As i realized my speed was never going to amount to 960K Both ways, they allowed me to change my line speed to thier lowest speed offering, 960K/256K ADSL. Get that from the Larger guys!

Overall, my contract is up. I contiune my ACD service for as long as i remain in my apartment, because other providers cannot deliver to me.

My only gripe with them is that i use my connection for mostly online gaming. Game servers that are even 5 hops away in chicago are 50ms pings. The best ping i can get anywhere is 50ms. my first hop is always 20ms away, second hop is 20ms, third hop is 20ms. All of the backbone providers that they use are always 40ms pings to the routers themselves. This is unaceptable for gamers, as seeing that 40ms is all it takes to make the difference in your game. all these problems i have are due to their internal network routing, and it is nothing i can see being fixed without major expense from them. However, ACD is a **MAJOR** step from cable in the lansing area.

If you want a RELIABLE connection with great web browsing speed that will rival cable modems, look no further than ACD. I seriousy recommend you give them a call and see what they can do for you. Their sales staff is wonderful, and has put up with me for a year.

Another thing to not recently about acd.net (as of 9/12/03) is they are experiencing packet loss in a major way. They have an ability for users to monitor the network from your conenction, so you can tell they only have 1 connection the the internet themselves. They have peering arangments with 4 others, but packets wil not route through them unless you go to the website they host directly. So theier MAIN internet conncetion is a lonley DS-3, which is almost COMMPLEY maxed out, even on off peak times, you can expect to see this kind of packet loss:

    Ping statistics for 129.250.223.145:
    Packets: Sent = 119, Received = 107, Lost = 12 (10% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 45ms, Maximum = 58ms, Average = 48ms

    Tracing route to d3-0-0-7.a02.chcgil01.us.ra.verio.net [129.250.223.145]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    1 17 ms 16 ms 19 ms router.lnngmiso.acd.net [207.179.92.1]
    2 19 ms 18 ms 21 ms vlan20.lnngmimn.acd.net [207.179.70.200]

    23.145]

    Trace complete.

Now, this is entirely unacceptable for an ISP. Also, they have a way to monitor CPU load and such on thier routers. If you look, you will knotice that thier routers are almost completely maxed out. 79% cpu load off peak, 98% on peak. They have about the worst setup i have seen for an ISP. thier network is run at 79% utilization almost constantly?! does that sound like an what an ISP should be doing.

Not to mention its 50ms to hit chicago. On SBC or comcast, your longest trip to chicago is 20ms. And everybody gets better speed with those ISP;s. A friend from work is now getting 3000/1024 from comcast, without any charge. Thats 2 T's Down and 1 Frac-T up.

SBC to dallas round trip - 40ms 0% loss for $26.95 (1500/256 DSL)
Comcast to Dallas round trip - 67ms 0% loss for $40.95 (3000/256 Cable)
    ACD to Dallas round trip - 89ms 1.03% loss $25 for $44.95 (960/256 DSL)

News server performance is about the slowest i have ever seen from an ISP. It took me about 2 minutes to recieve a responce from the server.

Also, ACD was infected with the blaster worm. I was running my firewall specificaly tracking attempts to port 135 from ACD.net's IP's to send a letter to abuse department. When Lo and behold, DHCP17.ACD.NET had attempted to connect to me about 5 times one day. They not only use windows servers for their operations (LMAO, what good isp would use anything but UNIX or LINUX, come on guys) but they forgort to update their machines, and were infected with the blaster worm, the worm that almost shut down thier network due to ping flooding. I brought this to their attention, and i never recieved a reponse. Typical ACD.net crap.

Who would you choose in lansing? My money is not in ACD anymore, and alot of their customers are begining to realize that.

Also to everybody here who reads this. I posted to DSL reports a bad review before. I did this in reply's to this review, which you will see. ACD sent me an annonymous letter saying that i should not expect any favors, whatever that meant. Its been ever since then that my internet conection has droped in speed. i used to get at least 600kbps down and 256 up, now im no longer any good for more than 440 down/ 256 up.

I recomend that you try all of your options before going with ACD.net. Their network, grudging technical support reps, and prices should say enough.

**edit: In response to the "warning: issued above, I would like to add that I have only logged into this site once before but I've visited quite often.**

ACD.net now ranks lower, in my opinion, than Comcast. I never thought that could be achieved by any broadband supplier but I am painfully aware that I was incorrect. The tech installing the line never labeled it in the telco interface.

ACD is perfectly willing to advertise SDSL @ speeds of 2mbps up and down but cannot confirm them until the line is dropped and you're a customer. At this point, unless you live next door to the substation, you will be very disappointed. I subscribed for the 2mbps/2mbps @$99/month. I have 960/284 @ a reduced $59/mo. I'm stuck with them as I had cancelled cable and am still under contract with ACD. Sure, some people would fight that but I, unlike some, *honor* my word.

SBC advertises 1-6mbps guaranteed. Now, how is this possible if ACD can't even get me the 2mbps I bought? 16k feet is the tech limit for 2mbps and 9k feet the limit for 8mbps -- I live 11.5k feet from the substation and i can't even get 1mbps! Now, either ACD is technically inept or SBC is doing something to their lines ( how can they offer their packages at those speed and ISPs, such as ACD using SBC's lines, not be able to achieve those speeds? ) and ACD may be unwilling to confront them.

At the end of my contract, I am dropping this place faster than a hot potato and going with SBC.

Well where do i start. I heard good stuff about acd from a friend of mine who heard from a friend of his about the service. He neglected to tell me about his battle over the summer with their service being down all the time apparently due to a transition or upgrade of some kind. Well after signing up and having some issues i wasnt surprised because i had troubles setting up with at&t also. after things finally got up and going things seemed to be doing alright....for a little while at least. then the connection goes out for an entire weekend. they tell us that there is nothing wrong even though nothing changed on our end and theres no line light. well it mysteriously came back that following sunday. sometimes it will just go out for a while at a time but most of the time its a few seconds. just long enough to kill whatever downloads you have going. its funny especially when you have other friends with acd on your buddy list watching everyone signoff and then back on at the same time. on my frequent calls with the service department( by the way you get to know the support menu real quick) you relize you know about as much of what is going on as they do. hell maybe you should go in and help them fix the problems. i guess what i wanted to achieve by making this report is what it says in my bottom line. if you need the upload speed then you have no choice. otherwise do not get stuck in the contract (ya this modem costs $300 my @55. its got one pcb and prob cost $20 to make) otherwise just go with at&t. ya theyve got their issues too but they are less frequent and the downloads are faster. (i had att for a year before acd btw)

ps. disconnected twice while typing this.

    and

THEY LOVE TO BLAME MSU FOR DOWNTIME. GETS THEM OUT OF ANYTHING!

I am an MSU faculty. ACD has this great program where MSU faculty, staff and students can DSL for 59 bucks for 2.2mb service.

When I got the stuff I set it up and plugged in the modem. Called Tech-support to get it turned up to full speed. The technician on the phone was helpful (I waited on hold for about 3 minutes), and set the connection up for MSU. Got an IP address and was told it runs at 1.9mb down and 1.7mb up.

These guys are a local company with thier own network. They rule. Taking on the phone monopoly. Support has been great. Many friends of mine use them for DSL and have been telling me to ditch AT&T/Comcast, or whoever they are now.

i live in north lansing, just south of dewitt and i have 560k-down, 160k-up and it rocks! i had at&t for cable (which is now canceled) it was down quite often, there were periods where it would be down for weeks (no joke!) straight. the first time i was going to cancel my at&t cable they gave me a month free and my connection improved greatly but i only took the month free to give acd.net time to get the dsl loop installed

the manager of the acd telco installed my line personally and was very friendly and knowledgeable. i use acd.net for all of my services (domain hosting, email, .etc) and i love it, especially with the anti-spam filters, anti-virus protection and the great technical support. i have had no problems with my line at all and i have been with them for several months now.

i had used acd.net in the past for dial-up and isdn service and was very happy, i had problems with earthlink changing the terms of my service with out notifying me and they ended up billing my credit card almost $1000 for one month of isdn service of which i got $500 back, i was furious! the accounting people i dealt with at acd were very friendly and to be honest i haven't spoken to one since i signed my contact! no problems here at all.

I have found ACD.net to be well beyond my expectations. The service order and installation were completed in about a week even though the local telco had problems on their end. I committed to a two-year contract in order to avoid the purchase cost of the DSL modem. Even though their technical support staff was not been able to answer all of my initial questions they did commit to finding out the answers. On more than one occasion I have had the pleasure of dealing with the Owner who went out of his way make to make sure I was a satisfied customer. My DSL connection only provides me with a dynamic address but I can't even remember when it last changed (I know it has been well over 5 months). Also I have been very happy with the stability of the connections. Of the few times that there has been a service outage I received advance notice of such. The only exception to this is when an unexpected equipment failure had occurred -- not bad at all. On top of everything else they are a locally owned, locally based company. If I feel the need, I can drive to their offices and talk face to face with an actual human being. I highly recommend their services.

I ordered DSL from ACD.net about a month ago. I sent in the contract, eight days later they had the line installed. I went to thier office and picked up a modem, and had it running that evening.

When I first ordered the line I got 512/512k up/down for $59.95. About two weeks later, I got an email that said they were going to also provide 768k and 960k on the same modem. They said they would also provide SDSL at these same speeds for only $20 bucks more. I called them up, and the technician said he wanted to upgrade the modem. The lights on the modem started blinking, and the DSL modem reset. 10 minutes later I was going at 768k. I was amazed that the average support dude on the phone could do all this in about a 5 minute phone call

I had Ameritech before, and they sucked. Your upload speed with them is 128k if you are lucky. Quakeing is much better with the the faster upload speed. These are the only guys that have equal upload and download speeds available that I have found.

Local company. The tech people know what they are talking about which is always refreshing.

Friend of mine has their service, and had thier line go down once. I haven't had any problems with the line going down (that I know of).

Hi there I ordered acd.net in E Lansing Mi on the 17 of May
on the 24th, I got an email that stated my line was installed
and that I could call to arrange the pick up of my modem for my self
install. On Friday the 25th I went and picked up the modem and when I
got home and hooked it all up,,,, nothing, =(

After I called tech support and spoke with a great
service rep, and explained my situation, she ask me, Did you use the
cable from you old msn modem or did you use the one that came with our
modem?, well, I used the one that was allready there and as it turns out
that was my problem, I had a non cross over cable, and their's uses a
crossover cable. Boom, plugged it in and there we were online, then she
tweaked my port and set up my email and webspace. I couldn't of even
expected such service after the northpoint msn thingy.

(Screw At&t! and their promise of cable service to the capitol city
of Michigan, I was told by them for 18 months "Next month sir")
I'll probaly be renewing this service long before cable really gets here anyway.
Any one want to buy a msn dsl modem Real cheap?
    512 up and 512 down for $59.00 a month.
Online gaming is awesome now baby! =)
Acd.net is more than I expected at this point, will be back to report how it goes.

    Update 5/10/01
    -----
My DSL line is back up. It sounds like the problem was initially a bad jumper in the CO, which would have been fixed on Tuesday. However, the phone company then mistakenly hooked me up to Northpoint's equipment rather than ACD's equipment. The ACD tech had to figure out the problem for the phone company. Hats off to him for accurately trouble-shooting the problem and being able to communicate it to the phone company.

    Updated 5/6/01

Did some investigating on Saturday to verify the problem was not "inside" my house. Plugged the DSL modem directly into the telephone access panel outside my house. No line light, so it appears to be beyond my home unless the modem itself is bad. Service is still not up, but I didn't expect it to be resolved over the weekend.

    Updated 5/4/01

When I arrived home from work today, I noticed I was experiencing my first DSL outage. The line light on my DSL modem was not illuminated. Tried power cycling the unit and checked the outside connection prior to giving ACD a call. When I called them, they confirmed it was down and opened a trouble ticket. I will update this review to provide a summary of my experience as they work to bring the line back up.

    -----

After the Northpoint fiasco I lost my Telocity connection. Since Telocity didn't have any arrangements with other DSL circuit providers in my area, there were unable to migrate me.

Fortunately ACD.net, a local DSL provider, was able to step in quickly and provide me with a new connection. It was just 13 days from the order to being online. Although it's $10 more per month than my Telocity connection was, I am getting higher bandwidth from ACD's 512 connection than I was from Telocity's reported 768 connection.

It's also nice to be supporting a local company.
