This is to let people know that that their advertised speed vs. their
actual speed is so disappointing. I pay 54.95 a month for their
advertised 768/128, and realize that the speed is not guaranteed, but my
download speed is locked on 60K. I gave up another ISP which had much
better download speed for only 49.95 a month. I am very disappointed,
their help desk is useless, and am only keeping them for one year
because I need a static address. I would only like to let the customer
beware, ATT, provides a very poor service, lousy support, and I wouldn't
recommend them to anybody.

We started a web based business in Spring of 2002. Our
original ADSL was through AT&T in April of 2002. We had down time in May,
twice in June, 8 days in July, 10 days in August.

I was familiar with DSL.net from my previous employer.

We called, got immediate response from our sales rep.
Signed up for DSL service.

Got e-mail notification of installation with a phone
call for follow up and have been as happy as can be
ever since.

Great, reliable service. In the past year, we had one
"burp" in service for about a hour on one day. I
contacted C/S and we were up within 60 seconds.

I recieved a postcard in the mail from AT&T offering DSL service to AT&T customers.

I called on June 27 and signed up. On July 1, I recieved my self-installation kit. (They emailed me that morning stating I would get it that day via UPS.) On July 2, I recieved email that I was activated. I installed the Speedstream ASDL modem and then started the software installation. The first time after it asked me to reboot, it wouldn't recognize the installation cd in the drive. However, the second time it went perfectly. Connection made and off I went on the web!

I tested the speeds and i get ranges of 672/343 - 612/303. It was advertised as 768/384, but as a long time dial-up user, I didn't care. So far, there haven't been any hiccups in the service yet.

I signed up for dsl 2 years ago with earthlink, but was told (after two attempts to get it) that my line is not dsl capable. (my CO is 4250 feet away) I am thrilled that I finally got broadband.

June 16 2003

I no longer have DSL. AT&T sent me a Fed-Ex stating that on June 16, it will no longer provide dsl to my area. They sent me a check as well to compensate for any inconvenience.

Verizon doesnt provide DSL either, so I am back to dial up

The install was very smooth. Covad, a contractor with AT&T, sent a Tech
that identified a short and repaired it. Then he left the DSL Modem up
and running that was also checked with his own notebook.

As I did not have a LAN Card in my tower computer [Clone], I bought one
from Best Buy as well as a Wireless Router and Wireless card for my
notebook, an HP Omnibook 900. The LAN Card, Wireless Router and Wireless
card are from Linksys.

Initially the tower PC worked well with the modem. When I added the
wireless router there was no access; I had to call Linksys support and
they walked me to solve the problem.

Now both my PC and my notebook are working very well.

Unfortunately, in a month we are moving to a different part of the city
and will have to switch to Adelphi as AT&T has no fast access service
there.

Bye, Enrique

Placed my order with AT&T on 4/22/03 and by the next day the placed the order to provision my line with SBC who set a due date of 4/30/03. Line provisioning was complete on 4/29/03 one day early. Ordered 1500/384 service and speed is as expected. No pesky PPPoE or MTU reductions necessary unlike my SBC DSL. Overall so far I'm pretty impressed with AT&T.

I chose At&t because they were offering 768/384 DSL for $40 a month for a year. Waited two and a half weeks after ordering, and when I called At&t for a status update, they said my line was already activated. But they hadn't even mailed the DSL modem yet! Numerous phone calls later, they discovered that mistake and mailed the modem. Installation was painless. They included 6 microfilters and 1 NIC, even though I didn't need one. The DSL modem has an Ethernet connection, and seems pretty rugged.

Overall, very satisfied with the connection. The connection is via dynamic IP, but it hasn't changed at all in 3 months. I was pleasantly surprised, since I wouldn't have to install PPPoE client software onto my computer. The upload speed is great, but I would like a faster download than the 650kbps I'm getting from the speed test. Their network seems a little flaky sometimes; twice in the last 3 months my connection was down for no more than 24 hours each. Wait time for technical support averaged 15 minutes.

Mail and News servers are excellent, especially the high completion and retention rates their news servers have.

For $40 a month, this was a great deal. I would have chosen cable, but Optimum Online is not avaliable in my area, and Roadrunner is too expensive for non-cable subscribers.

I struggled with Covad for three months, DSL. My line and low noise
figures. Like other reviews I've read on Covad, install was easy, but
speed reliability was very poor. Finally fed up after many hours on the
phone with support I called AT&T broadband. A tech. was at my location
for install and it was up and running in LESS than 24 hours. Speed is
consistent and above what they claim. 1784 Kbs down 256 Kbs up and less
expensive than Covad.

Desperately Seeking DSL
02.11.2003 07:51pm EST

i'm trying desperately to contact someone about determining the availability of dsl in my area.

when i'd originally signed up with at+t local service, i had also called the dsl service line (actually, my local service account was established by someone IN your dsl accounts department) to determine availability for my address.

i was assured at+t dsl was available in my area.

months later, upon calling at+t dsl customer service, i had every interest in ordering dsl service for my at+t local service phone line.

unfortunately the operator could not sign me up over the phone, but did sign me up for at+t worldnet, which i could then use to visit the www.att.com/orderdsl/ webpage to order the dsl self-install kit.

again, at that time i was assured dsl service was available in my area.

however, today, upon signing up with at+t worldnet and visiting the webpage and entering my phone number, the form returned a page that claimed that at+t dsl was, in fact, not yet available in my area.

i called at+t dsl customer service and followed a series of voice prompts until i got a human being on the line.

and then i was told, repeatedly, that the previously mentioned webpage was the last answer in finding out about dsl availability.

i refuse to believe that some script on your website is absolutely the only way to determine dsl availability, especially since i've been told numerous times during other service calls that i should have no problem obtaining a dsl line for my current at+t local service line.

please do not make me have to cancel my at+t local service, give up on at+t dsl, and have to sign up with verizon. i sincerely would rather my money go towards a company that has proven itself time and time again to be more cooperative and providing better service, but given this situation i may have no choice.

help!

p.s. if you, in fact, cannot offer at+t dsl for my area (for the number - 212.674.---- at --- east -th st, new york ny 10009) could you PLEASE provide me with information as to which dsl providers will service my at+t local service line? the only answer i've gotten as of yet from other providers is that i have to be a verizon local customer. again, i refuse to believe that's my only option.

thank you.

One More Time
02.12.2003 03:56am EST

i've already written to you late yesterday about my woes regarding trying to get at+t dsl on my at+t local service phone line at --- east -th st, ny ny 10009 for the number 212.674.----

just to restate in brief what i'd said before, your operators all claimed that i should have no problem getting at+t dsl in my area... but according to www.att.com/orderdsl that's not the case.

or is it?

view this

»/coinfo/clli/NYCMNY13/

and tell me why the Center of Operations NYCMNY13 cannot serve my block, or my apartment, which is a mere 9 short city blocks south? and, in fact, at the very bottom of that webpage, it lists (212)674- as a series of phone numbers that it serves.

other isp's have stated that this would be the CO they would use for my apartment, but i was unable to connect since they seem to only serve verizon customers.

so what's the REAL story which i'm not being told? having trouble obtaining an agreement to use the CO in question?

do i REALLY have to give up hope of going all-AT&T for my wireless, local, long distance, and internet?

an inquiring mind wants to know. because if what i think i'm being told is true, then i'll have to take my money elsewhere... you know, my hundred-something dollars a month. (not to mention i'd be REALLY pleased to never give verizon another red cent so long as i live.)

thanks.

Other ISP's?
02.12.2003 04:04am EST

hi there.

i've had a bit of a nightmare attempting to get dsl access to my apartment. reason being, i have at+t local service for my phone line : (212)-674-xxxx at --- east -th st, apt --, ny ny 10009

could you service this number, without me having to switch to verizon? (i really, really would like to NOT give them any more of my money, if i can help it.) [i take evil monopolies very personally.]

i've attempted to get dsl for the past 3 months to no avail. even at+t is now claiming they don't service my area.

... even though CO NYCMNY13 has been cited by other isp's as the one they'd use. (that is, IF i was a verizon customer.) is this CO giving preferential treatment to certain companies and barring others from using it? (as a side note, any information at all regarding NYCMNY13 would be GREATLY appreciated.)

thanks.

According to your email you are trying to see if AT&T DSL is available in your area. The Website says no but the AT&T operators say that DSL is available in your area.

If you want to sign up for AT&T DSL and the website is not responding correctly please call Billing at 1-800-400-1447 option 2. They can see if the DSL service is available and set-up the account for you.

I am shocked none of these other ISP's gave you the real reason you cannot get DSL with a 3rd party phone company.

At any rate, DSL is available at your location, but you will not be able to get DSL unless you have a phone line with the incumbent carrier.

Hi,
I understand and share your frustration. But the FCC ruled in Verizon's favor, that to get DSL, (unless you have your own network), that you must have a Verizon phone line.

We have received your e-mail regarding DSL provided through AT&T. Please be advised that we are not able to provide you with DSL if you are an AT&T customer. The reason being we have a contract with Verizon in your area to provide service using their lines and do not have one, with AT&T. We have no access to their lines at the Central Office.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

If there is anything further that we can assist you with, please feel free to reply to this e-mail or contact our Customer Care Department at 1-888-64-Covad.

hi this is calvin from BEAN.net support, apparently according to our upstream we can service your apartment from that same CO. we WILL need to submit the order to provisioning to see if we can get you DSL without your having to switch phone companies.

I apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing. We are currently experiencing difficulty with the AT&T DSL Website. Please try back again within 5-7 business days. If you continue to get the same response please contact our AT&T Customer Service at 1-800-400-1447.

beth@britsys.com

Hello,

Unfortunately, we cannot service your location either because you don't have Verizon dial tone service.

This is because the vendors we work with in your area, Covad and Worldcom, must have a contract with the dial tone phone provider that serves your lines, in order to provide DSL on said lines. Big companies like Covad and Worldcom are only going to have contracts with big companies like Verizon. This is not specific to your particular CO.

--

skitch@guild.net
02.12.2003 12:22pm EST

Yes, we can provide SDSL service to your location without a verizon phone number, however the only service that we can provide in your location is Business SDSL. Pricing starts at $119/month. Please see »ww2.guild.net/dsl.php for more information.

--

mpedersen@westband.net
02.12.2003 12:52pm EST

The problem is, by not having Verizon as a local phone carrier, verizon cannot use a line that is allocated to a CLEC, AT&T or otherwise. This is an FCC Ruling (that verizon is very happy to follow)

The other problem is, I provide Covad Service through AT&T, and because of monopoly laws, AT&T cannot provide DSL to their own customers (even if provisioned through an independent ISP).

So the short answer is no, I cannot provide ADSL service to you if you use AT&T as a local phone carrier. I might be able to qualify you for some of our SDSL products, problem is they are significantly more expensive. I would reccomend contacting your Representative in congress about changing some of these outdated monopoly laws so that I might be able to accept an order from you.
arkady@acedsl.com 02.12.2003 01:21pm EST
You really must have Verizon in order to get any DSL on your existing phone line. Reason being, Verizon is the only company that is legally obligated to share the line. Once the line is surrendered to AT&T or MCI, Verizon no longer has control over it and cannot provide DSL on it.

It is AT&T's fault that they are too cheap to install DSLAM's at the Second Avenue CO (NYCMNY13) to provide DSL to their own customers.

Game Over
02.12.2003 03:04pm EST

yeah, so... a couple of phone calls to at+t confirms it. i have to be a verizon phone customer to obtain dsl access in my area. here goes a whole lot of cancellation and sign-up phone calls...
