Feb 4, 2009 Shaw has finally fixed the issue and from what I could tell was quite widespread. Happy it's now fixed. Would still recommend Shaw Internet
Jan 30, 2009 Terrible speeds after 6:00pm weekdays and all day on the weekends. Weekend speeds slower that 500 kb/s dnload. Just brutal.
** Nov 1, 2008 Abismal speeds on Shaw extreme. Getting between 2000-3000 kb/s dl. Took 4 weeks to fix. Did get credit for the period
** Aug 15 - Problems with DL speeds in the evenings from 4:00 - 10:00 where getting speeds around 500 K. Very slow.
*** Switched from Telus three years ago and was concerend about the possible speed but over te last few years, aside from replacing the Teryon modem at no cost, I am quite happy with the service.
*** Moved to a new house and have switched to Shaw. No choice as Telus has no service in my new area.... Totally bizarre that Telus would allow new homes to be built without infrastructure. Oh well, their loss as I can live with shaw.
*** Update: All is still well, however, my upstream speed has dropped a "tade". Nothing to worry about though. Experienced one outage Jan 30 but was only for an hour. ***
I initially ordered the residential service (1500/512) DSL three years ago from Telus and have been quite happy with it. The speed is great and I can depend on a relativly low latency on the network. Since I use this in my home office to VPN to the corportate network I have come to rely on this service. So far so good!
The only problems I encountered was the May-Aug 2002 time frame where there was a number of problems renewing DHCP. Fortunatly I was able to hard code the IP into my PC until the DHCP problem was fiixed to maintain connectivity. The other problem encountered was with the DNS last week of Oct 2002. The DNS appeared to be incredibly slow and was unable to resolve names for the morning. Fortunatly, I run my own DNS which uses the Telus DNS as forwarding DNS. I removed those entries and Violla everything was fine. I am not sure how long the DNS problem actually was.
Considering I have been in IT for the last 14 years I have excellent technical skills and am able to circumvent some of the problems. However, I would caution anyone who may have problems to be persistent with Technical Support. If you do that, at least you will make them understand your position and maybe take some additional action to fix your problem
Overall, I am quite happy with Telus and will continue to recommend them to my Family, Friends, and co-workers.

Reviewing my time with Shaw over the last year, my area had become congested and it took Shaw close to a year to get around to finally addressing it. Tech service can be inconsistent at times, but generally the people working there seem nice enough.
I tried to get some credit for the time where my internet speeds would drop down to 2-3 Mbit per second, but no go. I would probably think about switching to another provider when I move in a few months, depending on the promotional deals at the time.

10down 1up advertised. On a good night can achieve rated speeds or close to. On an average night I'll see 4-4.5Mb down and 200kb up and terrible latency, ping times to any server whether close by or on either coast average 300+ms, not great for shooters...
Random drop outs in evenings, and extremely slow to non-existent customer support. The one time (once!!!!) I did actually get a human to answer a telephone in my own city, I was told that they did not handle any tech or business details and I was promptly transferred to a call center in Calgary Alberta....I live in Kenora Ontario.
If I had other options for the same speeds and price I would take them, but unfortunately they don't exist.

I have had service for about 2 ½ yrs now. From order to install was about 2 weeks because of Christmas. $42.95 month including $5 modem rental. I have since purchased the modem from them for $29.95 therefore I now only pay $37.95 Not exactly sure what speeds I ordered - dynamic IP that has only charged 4 times in the last 2.5 yrs. Because I have Digital Cable I get a 2nd IP for free. Connected with a Non Docsis Terayon Terajet. Area is not yet have the infrastructure to handle docsis. Install was very smooth. Modem would not synch turned out they had me provisioned to the wrong Node. 2min call and all was good. Tech never touched the PC nic already installed and I did not want there software. Initial speed test were around 3000 kbps dl and 400 kbps UL. Few tweaks and got my dl up to about 3500 kbps. Mail for the first year was intermittent would sometimes take 2-3 days to get mail.
About 6 months in was when I started having problems. CATV and HSI would drop about 50-60 times a day. Serious RF issues. Numerous calls to Shaw and 4 techs later they stated they had no idea what the problem was. Turns out because of the unusual warm weather we were having the signal was dropping to low. Early morning and from about 9PM on everything was fine. The issue took about 2 months to get resolved. Everything ran great again for about a year then I started having problems again. At least 2 times a week for the last year my services will drop again both CATV and HSI. Countless calls to advise them of the issue but still nothing has been done. So that is where I stand now. Service is good when it works but always seem to go down when you want to use it. Oh well we'll see what happens this summer. Warm weather should be coming anytime soon. If I have the same problems I did 2 yrs ago I will problem drop all services and go with Bell Express Vu. I have already called and can get 3 receivers and HSI installed for $250 and $102.95 month. I pay $110.85 now for my Total Home Bundle including rental of 2 dig boxes.
UPDATE 7-16-05
Speeds lately really suck. 1200/210. less than ½ what I use to get. Called Shaw to have them check my rf. They say all looks good The rep tried to blame my router until I advised that even if I direct connect I get the same. Area still has not been upgrade to handle Docsis and probably wont be for a another couple of years so therefore the new Extreme service is not available. Service reliability has been okay. A few outages lasting a couple hrs for the last 6 months. not to bad..
UPDATE 01/18/06
Got my modem swapped and all is good. Service is stable. As before a couple of minor service interruptions here and there.
I have also since signed up with Bell Sympatico High Speed. Connection is great. Not one minute of downtime. DL is the same but up load is 250kbps faster. I use the Sympatico for my XBox and my wife uses Shaw. Not currently paying for Sympatico as took them a few days shy of 2 months to activate so I got a bunch of credit. I figure once I start paying for Sympatico I will drop Shaw. Sympatico is a few bucks more $44.95 compared to $37.95 but the extra upload is worth it.
UPDATE 8/15/06
I have recently moved as of July 1st from east end to west end. Speeds here suck for some reason possible node saturation I guess but I can't see that being the case, but not much I can do. All new wiring in the house even a new drop from the pole had a tech out to check the RF and all is good. Got word today that new xTreme was available. Called them up after work and setup an appt for Friday to swap the modem. The best part about it is it means they finally upgrade the network to Docsis which means Digital Voice and VOD are on the way.
BYE BYE BELL
My above comment about Sympatico UL being faster and me dropping Shaw once I started to pay for Bell obviously is not the case. Bell dropped my UP in half about 3 months into the contract and never bothered to do anything about it. The whole company is a bunch of well you know. Anyways we'll have to see how things go with the new xTreme
UPDATE 1/16/09
Well it has been almost 2.5 years now since my last update. Based on me not updating you can take that as everything is doing great. My DL is 10000+ with an UL in the high 800's. I only recently started having problems. In NOV I was getting extremely slow speeds. Called up Shaw and the issue was resolved within 24hrs. Turns out that they were doing some maintenance on there end. Up until the 1st week of Jan everything was great. Now during peak times 6PM-12AM my speeds are very slow. Ping times in 1500+. Called Shaw and they couldn't see anything on there end and suggested that my SB 5101 could be the problem.
Other than my recent problems everything has been great as I mentioned about. I got there Digital Voice installed in Feb 08 and have never had a problem it. Not once has it gone out. The only issue was at the time of install. The install tech was not too familiar with Voice installs and did not know how to configure my junction box or what ever it is called to get all jacks in my house working so it ended up that the MTA was installed in my downstairs bathroom/laundry room and I only have the one line direct from the MTA. Oh well what ever it works and maybe someday I will have them come back out and fix it up properly for me. VOD followed shortly after the availability of Digital Voice. I only have one work for Shaw OnDemand service "Sucks." There programming is very limited and over priced. I would rather go to Block Buster and rent the movie pay the same price and get to keep if for a week +.

I looked into Telus but it isn't available in my area. I currently subscribe to the Xtreme package.. Still haven't seen Xtreme speeds though. Order and install was fantastic. Motorola Surfboard modem for both my internet and my telephone. I just hate when it's really crappy weather and my connection goes to poop.

I am on Nitro Speed which is up to 25Mbps down but only 1 Mbps up. I would like a faster upload speed.
Used to work for Shaw, and all it takes if you have speed issues is a phone call...if you need a service call...it will get fixed.
As for people who say they get extremely slow speeds with their torrents... Get a life... Torrents will not download anywhere near maximum speeds..remember, you are downloading it off of other PC's..so you are limited to their UPLOAD.. (ie...mine is 1Mbps not 10)
Want to see how fast you can download? try a newsgroup or two.. I get a consistent 22Mbps +.

I live in Victoria, BC and I currently have the high speed package. I just can't set up my QoS properly because the speed fluctuation causes my otherwise perfect system to crumble and the downloads overtake my online gaming. A lot of the time the support is decent enough, but I have definitely had a few techs that hate their lives and project it onto everyone else.

I got this price because as an offer at university one day. Been with them ever since. It has been over 6 years and no major problems, just got a modem upgrade today. I almost reach the max dl (just over 4500kbps) and get a decent upload (around 500kbps). P.S. This is an update to the review.

Paying 64.95 per month (after $5 purchased modem discount) and service includes Basic Digital TV and Hi-Speed Internet. Haven't had any problems at all. Both times (once for me, and once for my father) the installer showed up on time as promised. Haven't had much need for tech support, but when I do it's always a pleasant experience with minimum (if any) hold times and the problems have always been resolved the first time and while I am on the line - no need for waiting, escalation, or call-backs. Upload and download speeds are always as promised for my level of service - never a problem with congestion in my area.

The only complaint I have is that they are not the cheapest, but they are the fastest. If I still lived in Calgary I could never leave them, but in a small town now and the lack of fibre optics is way to obvious sometimes. They didn't feel that the investment would pay off to put in the lines in the rural areas that they serve or should I say partly serve.
