$200 per month "HD picture quality is awesome, speed is fast and reliable" "Stuck on old cable guide, speeds can occasionally drop during peak times" "Solid service, rarely causes issues"

I've been a customer with Shaw on and off for just over 4 years now (I moved around a lot for a few years). I currently have the X-Large tripple play bundle. We use all 3 of our services quite extensively.
TV:
Stuck on the old cable guide, but don't wanna upgrade quite yet. We have the Moto DCX boxes so we get the MPEG 4 HD channels which is a bonus, and a 500GB PVR. Will eventually upgrade to the gateway (Fiancée really wants to watch PVR'd shows in the bedroom), but for now it's cost prohibitive. Shaw HD picture quality is far better than Telus + Bell from the caparisons I've done.
Internet:
BB50, 50Mbps down, 3Mbps up. I have the cisco dpc3825, however the wireless is disabled and using a D-Link dir-835 as a WAP. Most of my house is hardwired with CAT5 which is really nice. Speeds tests were all over the place until I found out that the Calgary speedtest.net servers are awful. Using the Edmonton servers I consistently get between 45-50Mbps down and 2.7 - 2.9Mbps up with a ping time averaging 37ms. Shaw Go Wifi has also saved us a combined $40 a month worth of data charges on our Telus mobility bills. Can't complain about the internet at all.
Phone:
Clear voice quality and works as you'd expect it. have never noticed a difference between my Shaw line and Telus lines I've used extensively in the past.
Overall I'm very happy with my services. Telus has some pretty sweet looking deals (especially since my Telus drop is all fibre... very tempting...) however switching right now isn't an option, and not necessary.
Comments:
| | Promo Right now shaw has a promo for a gateway and portal @$298. You can trade in your mpeg4 box for another portal which will cover two tv's for the price above.
If you purchase from best buy, price matching will bring the cost to $260, however the trade in program is not available if not purchased through shaw.

We just have the 'lite' service. It's all we really need.
We've had problems with modems and had to get a new dedicated cable brought in for the computer (we also use Shaw for TV), but the tech service has been pretty impressive.
update: we've had almost continuous problems with the motorola digital cable box since it was installed 5 or 6 weeks ago. after a few attempts to fix things remotely, a third tech in-home visit seems to have fixed things. the tech guy rooted around and found an old splitter in the wall from a previous configuration years back. once the splitter was removed, the signal strength improved immensely. and hopefully, all's well now!

$45 per month "Got the 25meg Extreme...very good speeds." "Had to switch to an outside news supplier." "Very happy."
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection Reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings above consensus)

Motorola equipment. Guy showed up on time. Tested signal strength. Good anti-spam on their mail server. Very very few outages. Bundled my HDTV, Extreme Internet and Shaw phone.
Shaw has bumped up the speed on the Extreme account to 25mbps. I regularly get between 22mbps and 24mbps. Very happy.
I now have outside Newsgroup access.
Had one of distro boxes go bad up the road. It was fixed quickly with 3 trucks and 4 guys working on it.
Then a few months ago a big piece of equipment went bad (TV was totally useless and Net access was slow with millions of dropped packets. That took them a week to fix. I was NOT happy about that.
P2P is now not throttled.
All in all still quite happy with Shaw.
Comments:
| | Really? You are cool with having your usage limits decreased and overage fees of 1-2 dollars for already pathetic limits being implemented?
Sure anti spam on their mail box is nice but really who uses and ISP's mail address....
| | | That is expensive You are paying $45 for 15mbps internet access? That is double of what you should be paying! One call to Telus will fix that. | |
| | | | Re: That is expensive Telus is no better. Shaw isn't charging fairly, but Telus is just as bad. Also the overage fees on Telus are $2/GB for their version of Extreme whereas Shaw is $1/GB. While that is still FAR too high, it is cheaper than Telus. I have also had consistently better speeds (closer or over my plan) with Shaw then I do on my DSL connection | |
| | | 2 edits | Re: That is expensive Telus does not currently enforce overage fees, and they don't plan to as per this interview: »www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1ItlDwebRc#t=1m43s
They can't distinguish between TV and Internet traffic and treat both as the same. Their network can also handle both unlike Shaw, which is at capacity once again. They also offer 25% more bandwidth per month, which ends up being cheaper than Shaw when comparing the same amount of data.

| said by Roofer:You are paying $45 for 15mbps internet access? That is double of what you should be paying! One call to Telus will fix that. No I'm not paying $45/month....that's just the advertized price. I have my HDTV, Internet and phone all bundled.
Extreme come with 100gig/month. I'm a power user but not for media. I don't stream video. The closest I have been to the limit was about 60gig.
Telus.....you're kidding, right?
If I had my choice of providers I would use Bell TV (was ExpressVu) for TV. I was a customer for 15 years and had no trouble at all. Where I live now does not allow sat dishes.
For an ISP I have been very happy with Shaw.
The only business I would give Telus is a land line phone.

Business customer $185 per month "Reliable, low packet loss, fast, no speed throttling." "Yay free Canada/US calling!"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection Reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings above consensus)

I received some assistance from a couple of Shaw reps here in the forums so I thought it appropriate to raise my rating for Tech Support. Thanks
--
Shaw recently released new prices and packages in accordance with promotion of their Shaw Exo network. As a result, my internet speed has doubled, I now have free Canada/US calling, and my monthly fees DROPPED $2/month. I thought this would be an appropriate time to update my review.
--
My employer has had a longer relationship with Shaw's business internet than they have with me. Connection reliability has been excellent. Since 2005 when I started working there, we've had only one outage during business hours, and we were notified about that a week before it happened. The quality of the bandwidth has been excellent - speeds are always as advertised and latency and packet loss is quite acceptable.
We've had Shaw Phone since 2009. I like it for its audio quality noticeably better than Telus and free features. My favourite feature is Caller ID blocking for telemarketers. The only thing that could be improved is that incoming Caller ID Name does not always work. It displays "OT OF AREA", or simply "O", for about 7% of names (yes, I measured) that do display properly on Telus, cell, and VoIP phones.
I've rated Install Co-ordination two stars because both installs we had were rocky. I ordered one phone line and then a few months later ordered three more. During the first installation, the tech wanted to leave before the line would receive calls. I said I would report him if he left me without a phone. He fixed it. The second installation involved a total of five technicians in three visits to do a job that could have easily been done by one tech in one visit.

$47 per month about 2 days "Great Uptime of service." "Multiple Service calls needed to resolve issues." "Good connection, slower speeds during primetime."
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection Reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings match consensus)

September 12, 2011 - With the recent slow response in the call centre for help I have downgraded my tech support rate to lowest possible.
June 29, 2011 - Upgraded to BB50 package. This service has been great for the most part. Consistently over 80% of my QOS even during peak interface traffic times. Glad to see UBB has been dealt with fairly.
Mar 7, 2011 - With the UBB review being done by Shaw I have updated my review to reflect the current no UBB cost hit.
Jan 14, 2011 - I have had this service since the fall of 1998 and it has been great. I have needed a few service calls over the years and both times repeat visits were needed. The new bandwidth transfer costs or UBB have made this product costly.
April 11, 2012 - Well UBB never did come into effect and they have a new method call "bump up". Its better UBB but no UBB would be best. This program is stated to come into effect in September of 2012. The biggest issue I have is reach speeds during prime time and has been noticeable since January 2012. My area has not received the digital network upgrade yet but sells BB50 and BB100 packages. I expect my speeds to be good again after this upgrade... whenever that happens. Social network support has been a nice addition.
Comments:
| | Update on UBB UBB hasn't been dealt with at *all* in the eastern part of Canada. 25 gigabyte caps a month are still the norm while the rest of the world has no caps. | |

Contract price not specified. "Download speeds perform as advertised" "Upload speeds perform as advertised" "Better than the only other option in Winnipeg (MTS)"
| Pre Sales information: Install Co-ordination: Connection Reliability: Tech Support: Services: Value for money: (ratings match consensus)

"Introductory offer" pricing is confusing - it makes you think you're getting a better deal than you are, especially considering the one time installation fee of ~$35.00.
Service provision is good; there are rarely if ever interruptions in the service and when there are a power cycle of the modem usually sews the problem up.
Here in Winnipeg, we have a choice between only two service providers: Shaw and MTS. These companies know that you don't have much of a choice - retention services at both are poor. If you have complaints or consider switching service they won't try to keep your business.
$50.00 a month for 10Mbps is about standard across companies. It is too much to pay for this service but we customers don't have much of a choice. If I have any complaint about the actual service, it is the upload speeds, which for my plan is 512 kbps. Terrible. 10Mbps down 512kbps up? Forget about using your Internet if you're using P2P in the background.
Given that the bar is set pretty low for ISPs in Canada (viz. customer service, competitive rates/plans) Shaw is near the top. If TekSavvy served Manitoba, I would sign up in a heartbeat. Faced with a choice between Shaw or MTS, choose the former.
